With the recent announcement of Tekken 5: DR going online, their fighting game cousin, Soul Calibur is now confirmed for ONLINE play as well! According to 1UP.COM’s latest information, Soul Calibur IV for the Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 will feature online play as well as other network features! This should be a good indication that Tekken 6 will be online for home consoles as well! Click below for the full report!
From 1UP.COM:
Despite online multiplayer’s growth, the fighting genre has notoriously resisted embracing the feature. The Mortal Kombat series was an early pioneer, but the old dismissal that online networking isn’t fast enough for the split-second timing seems to be failing — or companies have come to terms with it. Either way, the latest issue of EGM spills the beans: Soulcalibur IV will have online networking when it arrives on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2008.
“What’s changed this time around is that the next-gen platforms have network infrastructure already in place,” says Soulcalibur IV Director Katsutoshi Sasaki. “We’ve heard from fans that they really want the game to be online, so we figured that, with the current environment, we really couldn’t make SC4 without online play.”
Score one for gamers. But, with the introduction of create-a-character in Soul Calibur III and its assured revamping in Soulcalibur IV, will these customizations go to waste? “We definitely want to allow users to fight with their customized characters during online play. But we’re unsure whether or not you’ll be able to trade characters with friends.”
Don’t forget to check out the latest issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly and their 14 page feature on Soul Calibur IV at newstands NOW!

Since T5DR got announced online, it opened up the flood gates of online fighters... VF5, SC IV, and Tekken 6 are on their way!
:)
I, for one, welcome online unblockable Mitsu 2K,B's. :booty:

I thought you were always opposed to online fighting games, B:L. You always spoke of the problems online fighting would have back in the day when everyone would ask why this game or that game didnt have online.

Its not like I wasn't gonna buy the game on day 1 anyway, but its gonna be a lot harder to wait knowing its gonna be online too.

For instance:
DOA online play sucks. It works because the game sucks, and that hides the fact that the online play sucks.
We'll have to wait until Tekken 5 online comes out to figure how well it plays. My guess is that the mainstream will be happy with it for a while, but the hardcore will be disappointed, and that disappointment will eventually make it's way to the mainstream and they'll be disappointed.
Mitsu's VC is the worst example, because that's one of the most abusive exploitations of VC. Instant easy frame advantage on block for Mitsu's main game (the 50:50 mixup), and on hit it's guaranteed HALF-LIFE DAMAGE. From a mid that can catch stepping characters. Leave that out of the game, please.

I don't hold any high hopes that Namco will do T5 Online and SCIV online well. I hope that the commitment required to put out their netcode won't detract from development time necessary for the core game system and tweaking.
I'm just theorizing for fun. If Mitsurugi lands a frame advantage move on hit or block, and given that his 2K,B is fast as all hell, it'll make that move nigh-unblockable. Unless in their process of "tweaking" for netplay, they slow that move down. Which would affect offline play in a negative way.
It'll be fun until the abusive elements are found. Then everyone in a public game will be using it. I just hope Namco can keep their online and offline tweaks separate.

From SDTEKKEN.COM ! (http://sdtekken.com)
Here are some more details from the latest issue of EGM:
* Soul Calibur IV will run 60 frames per second(this was revealed previously).
* The amount of detail in the game will be amazing! “The leather straps on Ivy’s thighs make real-time indentations into her skin as she fights.”
* The development team is putting so much detail into the game that they are actually rendering Taki’s nipples under her leotard.
* New characters will be kept under wraps and revealed closer towards the release date.
* “Guard Impact” is back.
* Stage design is still very early in development. Make sure to take note of these screens as the game progresses.
* The stages will be far more interactive and play a bigger role in battle. They use Zasalamel’s clock tower stage as an example.
* The development team is hoping to reduce the rate of ring out victories by making stages much larger than before.
* The game will be based on the Soul Calibur III engine and will be reworked from the ground up for balance reasons.
* Patching the game is possible if any issues come up with gameplay, but “we don’t intend to make a game that needs to be patched at a later date.”
* The health gauge is going to be changed. There will be a way to beat your opponent that doesn’t involve the health gauge or ring outs.
* No tag-team play.
* In regards to Soul Calibur on the PSP: “We’re happy to hear that players would like to see Soul Calibur on the PSP, so we’ll keep that in mind.”
* The “Create A Soul” mode is getting major improvements, such as being able to change your characters voice and certain customizations that will have an effect on gameplay.
* Online custom character trading is a possibility, as well as bringing your custom character to a friend’s house.

This is shocking to me.
it's not that shocking that a company wants to sell their game. lets face it, competitive balance issues are a drop in the ocean compared to moving copies in the U.S. to them.
the PS3 version won't be so bad, since PSN uses a better, almost lag free server set up (yes, I know it's never totally lag free.) the 360 version will be a mess.

I can definitely say everyone in the fighter thread will be at their top game, so don't get too cocky...yes we are good... are we cocky... yes.
on that note I was once the top SC player in my area for a while alongside a few other players I knew in a small fighter community I hung around with. and yes, that entitles me to be a bit more cocky. either that or I like to write the word cocky.

But hey, Soul Calibur III still burns. Rushing out what appears to be a quick cash-in is a surefire way to damage a good series' reputation. Let's hope they don't do the same with SCIV, but with a 2008 release date, it seems hopeful. I haven't heard anything about an arcade release though...
And PS3's server set up is that much better? Huh...I wouldn't believe it, especially after how amazingly bad the PS2 set up was.

I assume they'll use the same servers used for Resistance, MK2, and many of the PS2 games (MK: Deception, MGS, Socom.) Basically, a 40 player game in resistance runs very smoothly and input lag is nearly non-existent in MK. It's not perfect, but it beats XBL's connection by far.
Lag spikes in 3rd strike = game stops completely for a second. so freaking annoying :bomb:
I think the reason is that XBL runs peer-to-peer connections (the players host), where PSN uses infrastructure or dedicated connections (the server hosts it.) I could be completely off with my terminology...

I'm pretty sure that's not entirely true. There are some games that use P2P (I believe Halo 2 did that invisibly, behind the scenes), but most games go through dedicated Live servers, exceptions being stuff from EA and presumably FF XI. In short: I think it depends on the game. I fully admit I'm no networking ninja, though.
"In its current configuration, most Xbox Live content is routed through Microsoft's Xbox Live servers. For the Xbox Live launch in 2002, Microsoft installed massive arrays of servers in four locations in the United States, Japan and the United Kingdom. The network costs alone were estimated at $500 million [ref]. The servers are physically secure, with multiple levels of security. The entire system is controlled from Xbox Live headquarters in Redmond, Washington. Microsoft is so security conscious that they don't give out specific information about types or exact numbers of servers used.
There are a few exceptions, however. Initially Electronic Arts did not produce Live Enabled games for Xbox because Microsoft wouldn't allow them to use their own servers. Eventually, Microsoft relented and EA has begun producing Live Enabled games in their popular sports line, as well as games like "Burnout 3." However, the rollout for "Burnout 3" was plagued with severe problems, including server timeouts, Xbox crashes and poor performance."

hmmm, unfortunately that article doesn't really answer it. they would have servers there regardless of what type. I do want to know the exact explanation, but I slept through the one networking class I've ever taken :)
the fighting games I've played on Live have all been peer hosted for sure, because they're all very hit or miss.
Awesome news! Now if only they would port Cave shmups over to 360 or PS3...

well, MS wins in terms of community online stuff with organizing and all that stuff a no brainer between games, but lag is suck up butt, while sony has a decent online community thing but better setup of their network. I'll definitely get this game on PS3 instead of 360... plus it wont have that annoying Dpad on PS3.

Yeah, I've got to say, as glad as I am that I'll be able to find competition for these games 24/7, I'm not entirely sold on the idea that even the best set-up will be able to handle half of Akira's movelist or any Tekken just-frames. Still, online fighters seem to be in their infancy, so I'm kind of bending over backwards to give them the benefit of the doubt.
Now I'm curious about the network differences, too. I've absolutely no experience with the PSN, so I can't say, but I haven't had lag over Live in forever. I haven't touched any Live fighting games, though, and obviously that's anecdotal anyway. Have any of you Fighter Thread guys compared the same game online across platforms or anything?

Interesting...
In any case, for Namco to put such a flagship fighter online, it should work fine.
Online fighters have come a long way since the early days.

Seriously folks, in my short time playing PSN, namely Restistance, MKII and a few others, it has been unplayable. I'm not talking bad, horrible or even nearly unplayable, I talking UNPLAYABLE.
PS3 owners just have this ability to treat horse shit like gold.

I've never, ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever hit an ounce of lag in Resistance, even in the midst of 40 player fire fights.
Sames goes for Motorstorm and Calling All Cars.
And CoD3. (actually, a couple games had the random stuttering, but less than 10% of games)
With MKII I get 3 games out of 5 that don't have stuttering.
If it was unplayable, there wouldn't be hundreds of players on Resistance every day. (last I checked)

I'm sorry. I may be a newbie at these forums, but I take that as wrong and offensive. "Unplayable" is not suited. I have not experienced any latency when playing online, neither have any of my friends. So unless you're lying, you may have an "unplayable" connection.
