I've played the crap out of fallout, fallout 2, tactics, bg 1 & 2 with full expansions, both icewind dales, and planescape torment. Are there any other rpgs similar to these out there. Preferably that focus on story and character improvement. I'm not a big diablo fan so please no dungeon siege, sacred or the like. Also no mmorpgs

Arcanum comes to mind, if you haven't played it already.

Arcanum, for sure. Made by some of the guys that made Fallout, so it's guarantee you'll like it.
Temple of Elemental Evil is another one.
Sadly, you've gone through every game that is anything like what you listed in the OP. Kind of sucks, doesn't it, that more games weren't made in this awesome style?

Very much. ANd I forgot to mention I've played arcanum so that one's out. Here's to hoping nox and Sanitarium are good and that I can find them. Just not a big fan of real time combat systems like oblivion so that doesn't do it for me. I have the kotors for the 360 and truly feel that that's about as closes to a 3d bg as we're gonna get.

Neverwinter Nights, which I'm sure you've played, but it's not listed. If you haven't GoGamer is having a sale on the Diamond package that includes all the expansions and what not.
Unfortunetly other than that, my mind is drawing a blank. ~_~

Ah, my speciality!
Lionheart: Legacy of the Cursader (Bad reviews, but I enjoyed it. Last game Black Isle Studios released)
Return to Krondor (Not as good as Betrayal at Krondor)
Robin Hood: Legend of Sherwood
Temple of Elemental Evil
Wizardry 8 (Not ISO 3rd person view, but still a great game)
Nox is more like Diablo, so if you were looking that way I'd recommend Titan Quest, Darkstone, Divine Divinity, Dungeon Seige (reread the OP...heh), and/or Revenant.
And for more of a military type BG, Jagged Alliance 2.
I'll see if I can remember any more.

I second Neverwinter Nights.
You may also like Throne of Darkness. I loved it. You have samurais, and it's somewhat like Diablo, with a bunch of Baldur's Gate crammed into it. Pretty fun. I bet you'd like it, given the list of games you've played.

I found Neverwinter Nights to be boring as hell. Played it for a half hour and uninstalled. I'll never understand why it gets so much praise. Comparing it to BG or Fallout is an insult.

Give Neverwinter Nights another try. The first time i installed it, had the same problem. I tried it again a year later and fought it to be very fun once you get past the opening tutorial section.

Nah, not Neverwinter. The single-player game is a stain on the fur coats of Black Isle classics and Baldur's Gate.
Arcanum is the best one like that from recent years. But I see you've played it.
I know it's not at all the same style but since you said focus on story and character I can't help but bring up Bloodlines. If not for all the bugs, it would be guaranteed a classic RPG. It's real time but most of the quests have multiple solutions (it's by Troika, guys who made Fallout and Arcanum), and frankly the story is very well told. Awesome, atmospheric RPG. Probably the last great PC RPG we'll see for a long time, unless Dragon Age turns up good.

I can't BELIEVE someone's suggesting Nox. That's an insult. Like someone mentioned it's more of a Diablo wannabe. Don't even try it, nothing like the games you've mentioned Sweeetja713.

Same here.
NWN is the only Bioware game I think is horrible.

So right now I'm leaning towards lionheart and temple of elemental evil. I tried neverwinter nights but couldn't get into it but I might give it another shot after lionheart and temple. Thanks for the heads up against nox.
As far as bloodlines I heard it was buggy as all get out even when fully patched. Can someone confirm or deny this?

No less buggy than something like Arcanum or Fallout 2.

Nobody's mentioned Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor.

The original campaign for Neverwinter Nights is terrible (and most editions come with extra modules), but it does follow the same format as Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment, et al.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is another great choice. It does follow some type of D&D ruleset, and the storyline is top-notch. The sequel: less so.
And a game in the running for the longest name and has been played by exactly two people in the world, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. It's a very underrated game with an excellent storyline, the best haunted house of any game, and some of the worst optimization I've ever seen. (Well, not the worst.) It's actually the first game to use Half-life 2's Source engine, but don't let that fool you - this is an exceptional RPG.

What you need to do is download the last official patch, then download the latest unofficial patch. Some dedicated guy out there has been continually releasing these unofficial patches that continue fix bugs and glitches, and now it's much easier to play.
Even still though, the load times are kinda long and frequent, which may interrupt your immersion sometimes. It's definitely a flawed game from a technical standpoint, but it's so rewarding as an RPG game I forgave the few little problems in it. NWN might have been cleaner, but at the end of the day I love Bloodlines a lot more than NWN. It's just so rich and atmospheric, with a very deep RPG system and multiple solutions to most quests (you will certainly have to figh every now and then, though) and plus it's an RPG that doesn't take place in a fantasy setting. And the writing, just as smart and funny as anything you'd see in the Fallout games, with impressive voice-acting to boot.
I'm gonna have to play this game through again now.
