I REALLY want to play this! The demo was awesome w/ friends. Never got old. Will try to get for cheap or my birthday in a couple of weeks.

The only thing I don't like about the game: The lighting system sucks compared to other titles like Half-Life 2. With a calibrated TV, the default "TV" mode is too washed out and lacks contrast. Switching to Computer as the in-game display mode brings back the black level but creates too much black crush. There is also no test card type image to calibrate the black levels. On top of that the flashlight is terrible. It's either an unrealistic perfect circle of light (instead of a radial gradient pattern like a real flashlight) or has very little effect on brightening your surroundings.

Maybe I have to mix and match the display mode and brightness but it's tough when there are no gamma level test images, not even the most basic "adjust until the darkest bar is barely visible" kind of stuff. Having the brightness set correctly makes this game 100x creepier but if it's too dark you have trouble seeing much at all.

EDIT: I'd also kill for an iron sights view with slight zoom for distance shots and something nicer than those 90s style crosshairs. I keep swatting at thin air because I'm so accustomed to left trigger being for a zoomed-in view.

The ONLY thing that could make this game better is an iron sights view. I finished up three of the four campaigns tonight and it was a complete blast with co-workers. I also racked up like 12 or 13 achievements.. fun times.

Is there any story at all? It seems to me to be just Counter-Strike with zombies. I love a great zombie game, but I like a story. Does it talk about how the characters back stories? Do you get to see how the infection started? Is there any conspiracy? Is there any depth?

To anyone who has this, is it worth picking up if I can only play online during the summer and vacations? The internet here is atrocious. It takes 45 minutes to download a three minute video, so naturally, online gaming is out of the question, but I DL'd the demo and I love it.

Like you said, it's Counter-Strike with zombies. That's not a knock against it. The game is just about you surviving, just like Counter-Strike was about completing whatever objective the map had.

That's the easiest finale, too.

Just hop on top of the roof when you come up the stairs.. it gives you a better vantage point.

It was awesome, though, me and three other people last night.. the helicopter touched down, two got jumped by the hunter and one got punched by the tank. I yelled "LEEEEERRRRROOOOOYYYYY!!!!!" and jumped off the roof, on the ground, ran towards the helicopter (shoving zombies out of the way all the way there) and made it on the helicopter with like 10% of health left. It was pretty epic.

I've put a few hours into this the last couple of nights, and I'm really having a blast (even though I've been playing single-player). I'm a little disappointed at how linear the routes are, but I definitely think I'll get my money's worth out of this. I had hoped you'd have to play through each movie a few times to really see everything. Still, they're the perfect length to just pick up and plow through. I'm taking Friday off, so I'll be available to play anytime during the day.

They said the demo would only be active until the game was released, then its servers would be shifted towards hosting retail matches. If you already had it, singleplayer would still work even after release.

I misread the comments earlier. I thought the ENTIRE game took 2 hours to beat, not just the movies. Since there's 4 movies, that's about 8 or so hours. Not bad considering I'll probably play through them a few times.

I think COD is better in a different way... but L4D is better in another way.

COD is much more competitive in the fact that the majority of the people try to rank up and pad stats.

L4D is just a good time, having fun either killing humans or killing the infected. Stats aren't really a factor at all.

its luck.. hopefully a survivor tries running ahead and triggers you to spawn as the tank.. it takes roughly 2-3 hits to knock someone down.

Yes there is an off-line multiplayer but just for 2 players.

The link you gave is the same game I already own with some added maps that were free to PC gamers. It was packaged together and is being sold on the marketplace in a huge money grab.

At this point and time, yes I try every new game before I buy it. There's no need not to try it since practically every game has a demo. I can understand why some games don't have demos, but the issue here is that there was a demo and it was taken down.

You keep the demo around so more potential customers can be exposed to a new game. Were you really wondering why every single other company doesn't take their demos down?

I've never been a fan of zombie survival games, but I am very intrigued by the co-op aspects of this game. I'd love a chance to try the game for a few minutes and see what I think. If only there was a system in place where people can try a small section of a game and see what they like. . .

You might be able to download it via the "Refer to a friend" option from somebody who has the demo downloaded unless they completely removed the demo from the servers and not just removed it's listing.

The Versus mode was the funnest thing I have done in a very very long time. The ammount of classic moments packed into 1 section of versus mode is insane. Wish I could always be a zombie, but being a human is ok i guess.

If you've got an explosive, it's worth wasting it on her. Still, have your big gun handy 'cause it won't kill her instantly.

If you have a shotgun, you can drop her with a single shot to the head IF you're lucky (and I've got the 30G to prove it).

If you have neither, just be cool, sit back and let someone else get her attention.

Just a versus mode on 10 sections from the first two "movie" campaigns from the single player. It's pretty damn fun playing as the Infected.

I wish they let you use the whole campaign to play versus on...hopefully that'll be an update later on that hopefully won't cost any money considering the content is already on the disc..

The graphics would be improved tenfold if they had collision detection. I know they left it out so one asshole couldn't stand in a doorway and set his buddies up like lambs to the slaughter, but when you cross into the same spot as someone else the majority of your viewpoint is filled with glitchy character models. Like those old games where you could zoom in on a character's face and turn the camera to go inside their head and see what looked like a big sack with two eggs poking through. I think you could do that in various Eidos games that used the same game engine elements, but you had to really try to, not like here where it's just always happening when you get bunched up.

I can deal with the graphics looking dated, what I don't like is them looking embarassing from a technical standpoint.

I personally think the lack of collision detection between the characters was a brilliant gameplay move on Valve's part. Not only is it a perfect way to prevent griefing, but in a game where characters are required to stay close, it prevents them from constantly getting hung up on each other, which is frustrating as all hell in any game. The worst parts of HL2 had to be the squad combat scenes in tight spaces.

I think one of the easiest ways to kill the Witch is just to toss a molotov on her head (gets you an achievement, btw) and blast her face with the shotgun/machine gun (also gets you an achievement).

Call me a cheap ass gamer, but I wait for a price drop. If Valve releases DLC on a regular basis, as they indicated, I would prefer to pay, say, 40 bucks for the game, then 20 bucks for the DLC. That is a lot more reasonable to me.

I played this game most of the weekend and enjoyed having random people on my friends' list join me from time to time. It's a great jump-in, jump-out game if you just start a friends-only private game.

The audio in this game is probably some of the best I've heard on current generation systems. If you have a great 5.1 system, crank it up and you can hear which direction the witch is by her crying (creepy as hell).

A bastard? ...Tch, not necessarily. You need at least one person on their feet to survive in order to respawn your teammates or to finish the campaign/finale. When you factor in the level of difficulty Advance or Expert poses for some people when the shit hits the fan those sort of last ditch efforts can mean the difference between moving on and restarting from the last safe room.

So you can bet your ass I would bolt toward the rescue during a finale in a heart beat if the rest of my team were on the ground making use of their last stand health... especially after repeating the same chapter multiple times. I lost count of how many times myself or others would sacrifice themselves for the greater good of the team.

Although... somehow I doubt that was the case in his situation, haha.

Valve is a company that supports their PC community 1st and their smaller Xbox 360 community 2nd. Microsoft wants Valve to charge for the TF2 DLC, but Valve wants to release it for free like on the PC.

Take Portal Still Alive for instance, all the maps were from a PC map pack called Portal: The Flash Version Map Pack. Microsoft charges $15 for it, while PC gamers can download the same maps for FREE.

People cant seem to understand that you have to move quickly through the god damn map and you dont have to shot every damn zombie you see. You can just sit back trying to head shot 60 zombies when the infected human players are going to be coming up behind you.

Get your ass moving, save people quickly and learn to aim these are the keys to winning as the human side.

The funniest death I had was being in the "gray screen" and being like 20-30 feet from the safehouse.

The problem with being in the "gray screen" is that you walk at an incredibly slow pace... so 2 of my teammates are in the safe house already and they're just laughing as I'm yelling for help... then the third one is about go get in and gets caught up by a hunter.. so I'm praying that he stays alive long enough for me to limp my way into the safehouse... someone from inside the safehouse throws a molotov in the direction of the infected... one of the infected runs my way.. the path catches on fire and as soon as I'm about to walk in I died from being engulfed in flames... love it.

My favorite death. Was in No Mercy part 3(?), when you hit the street level where the lift is. I had just got off the lift onto the roof, and a smoker grabbed me, yanking me off the roof into the 18 wheeler (that you can climb up)... head first. Instant death.

My favorite death was at the end of No Mercy where you have to wait for the helicopter to come. Me and a teammate were on top of the roof of the radio house and he got knocked down by some zombies. I killed the zombies and was trying to help him up but a tank came from behind me and knocked me right off the building. Flew about 50 feet from the building.

The level in which you have to wait for the boat was the ground work of a lot of crazy things. We died so many times at that one part and all of us were kinda edgy because of it. This is gonna be kinda long

After me and my friends worked for over an hour on advanced just on that level we finally saw the boat come crawling across. I was the first to see it standing on the 2nd floor holding off the horde piling into the window. Francis in the down stars closet trying to heal.

Bill was on the turret outs side along with Zoey to watch his back when we heard the music of the 2nd Tank coming.

Upon seeing the liner I scream, "Dude the boats coming get to the dock!" I pump my shotgun and jump out of the window into a sea of zombies shooting on the way down, turn towards the dock and haul ass towards it but before I can take a step I hear the all to familiarly cry, "AAAH a hunters got me!" I turn to find Bill literally about a mile away, up next to where the out door restrooms that you pass are.

"How the fuck did you get way out there?"
"I got smunted" (smoker pull into a hunter jump)

"Thats to far lets get to the boat." I said

As Zoey, Francis and I start racing to the dock and all we can hear in our head phones are "NOOOOOOO DONT LEAVE ME! I AM NOT THAT FAR AWAY!"

So I am the first to reach the boat and when I turn around I see in this order, Francis, Zoey, a horde of zombies and a big ass Tank all running toward me. So I am trying to lay down cover fire but the Tank catches up to Zoey and punches her but to my surprises she flew closer to the boat and landed like 3 ft from me. The punch also put the tank out of position so Francis had a clean run right into the boat......until a hunter came out of no where and landed on his face.

At this point the horde of zombies had also caught up to so I just yelled "He's no worth it lets go," and darted onto the boat with Zoey.

And all of this happened within like 40 seconds. Damn this is such a good game.

But seriously, I picked up this game simply on the recommendation from a friend. He had another buddy recommend it to him because he didn't want to play it with random people. So he bought it, then I bought it, and now we have another friend who is going to buy it this week. What we have found out is that the more friends you are playing with, the more fun this game becomes. Seriously. I tried playing it by myself and got completely bored. Every time I have played this game with a friend, it is a totally different experience and addictive.

I love being the guy who is screaming in the mic, "Holy Fuck they got me! They got me guys! Help!" And all my friends come running to save me as they have zombies crawling all over them. True friendship right there! Also, a word to the wise concerning random people playing with a group of friends: Either stay with the group or else we won't save you when you're being raped by a Hunter. We're in a group for a reason Rambo and that's why we outlive you by 10 minutes each time. I can't count how many times we had some maverick run all willy nilly without us and as soon as he is grabbed by a Hunter, we just wait for them to die. Oh and then we vote to kick them off our squad for being stupid. Now that's democracy in action! :D

Some people are failing to understand what the games purpose is, its not COD, its not GoW its not R6V. Valve wanted to make a zombie game that was as its tag line said "All killer No Filler."

It seems people are trying to constantly shoehorn all of these stereotypical standard cut and paste ideas from all these other games into this one and its not needed at all.

Valve made exactly what they wanted. A game about a zombie invasion that has high co op and re playability. Thats it. The game isnt trying to be all "lets have fun unlocking shit guys!" or "Lets go on a epic journy while mirco managing our resources."

Its about fighting zombies thats it. Thats why there is no real plot, thats why they give you the only 3 weapons in the game at the begining of each level and thats why there are no custom classes.

All that filler crap they left out to focus on making a great co-op game.....and that they did.

I partially agree. It's the reason why Steam has some deals on it for the PC. ($99 for everything Valve made including L4D or $150 for 4 copies of the game on Steam).

I don't think that it should be priced at $60, but it is really one of the most fun games I have played in a long time. That is, if you have friends to play with. I had to get it for the PC because my friends were getting it for that. The game is meant to be played with friends. Sure, there's single player. But in the commercial for the game, the first thing they advertise is 4 player co-op.

Also, if you have a million zombies after you AND an insane AI director to throw random crap at you, trying to think of tactics while getting through an unpredictable game will result in injury and possibly death.

I am always telling people to run and they just stand around. The chapter in No Mercy with the gas station is the worst. I played a game where my whole party got picked of right as we left the safe house and went down the alley to the left. All the infected were on the roof and picked everyone off as they stood around.

Back to the awesome thread of funny deaths. I was playing a normal round on the sewers level. For one, we lost Francis cause he took too long to get down the manhole into the sewers and a smoker grabbed him after we all dropped down. Then after I narrowly survived an encounter with a witch, we get to the ladder leading out of the sewers and I can hear another witch crying above. So I turn off the flashlight and slowly creep up the ladder hoping to not disturb any infected. I get to the top of the ladder and you know how the camera goes from looking up to straight ahead of you? I'm literally almost nose to nose with a tank. Game over.

Well, I picked the game up the other day and I've been playing a bit. I love the game. It's great, just mindless zombie slaughter. It's exactly what I expected from the game, and it's quite well done. I look forward to playing some games online with people and seeing how that is. I bought MK vs DC from TRU for $19.99 instead of Left 4 Dead because basically L4D has no main story mode the AI bots are not good cover and its too straight forward no real gameplay just walk from point A to point B and kill zombies. Its not very deep.

The game lives and dies by the multi-player. I used some leftover credit and a gift card from erewards so I didn't really pay $60. But I'm happy with it. I enjoyed playing with friends and helping each other out as we're being butchered by special infected. The 1-player mode is OK for depth (probably 8 hours on normal difficulty....then add in achievements and harder difficulties if that's your thing), but it's not "go out and buy it this minute" good. That's all in the online.

And for the little bit of story there is, check out L4D.com. There are mini character bios on the survivors and little bits of information about the levels themselves. Not a lot, but I liked it.

Is it worth 60? Maybe for some yes, GS had a deal for 5 bucks off and I think there was an other deal that had it for 5 bucks cheaper than that (Maybe Amazon had it). So someone could of bought L4D for 50 which I think is a great deal.
The one thing that's upsetting to me is that there might be DLC and MS requires Valve to charge for the DLC when PC gamers get the expansions for free. Total BS. If valve wants to release expansions for free or at least at a reasonable cost (5 bucks or less) MS should let them.

After playing this split screen co-op, I swear, this game can hear people talk.

On level with the train as the safehouse, we decided that the safehouse would be our fallback in case of horde, since the train yard so open. 10 seconds after we step off the train, cue tank music. We all haul back to the safehouse, thinking the tank wouldn't be able to fit in the door. We all get in, and see the tank coming. We all open up on the tank, thinking we're safe. Tank freaking busts through the door, into the train, we all die.

On the level with the boat finale...
After we cleared the inital neighborhood portion and started to move towards the woods, there's the big clearning. No one was in the clearning for some reason that time, and my friend says "No one is here... I don't like it. On three, leets just haul ass arcoss this field." He counts off, and I am the first to run. As soon as I take a step past the fence, a fucking hunter pounces on me.

And numberous other experiences.

No. You have everything unlocked from the beginning and there's no saving. You have to play it in one shot AFAIK.

Weirdest thing happened to me on Versus last night.

I was knocked off the building on the fifth part of No Mercy and was hanging off the ledge. None of my teammates were around to help me back up since I was on that building that you get to the top of by ladders that overlooks the helipad. Suddenly, one of the opponents playing as a Hunter comes up and starts to attack me. So, I was pretty much screwed to begin with, but now this Hunter is going to town on me.

Here's where it gets weird. The guy stops attacking and the white bar on the screen for helping people comes up. He actually pulls me back up as a freakin' Hunter. So, I'm standing on top of that building, wondering what the fuck just happened and watching the guy run off to take care of my teammates. I know 100% that this guy was on the opposite team because all my teammates were friends of mine and he pinned me down about two minutes later when I ran off to help.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?!

That happened to me last night on Blood Harvest. I got dropped RIGHT as we called the rescue in...lame. I had to play the whole thing over again to get the cheese-mint.

Also, if you haven't beaten all the movies yet and you have good people playing with you, that could definitely turn into several hours and not just a 1-2 hour burst.

If you're playing versus with a good group of people, you could play that for even longer.

I really hope Valve "unlocks" the other two campaigns for use in Versus mode for free. No Mercy and Blood Harvest are fun, but I can only play them so many times.

I took Gare up on his lobby yesterday and we got our asses handed to us on Expert because the CPU teammates are infuriatingly retarded (as I had warned him but we both couldn't pay anyone we knew to play with us). Random Tank and strategic Witch placement for the lose. Hell... after we had fought our third one the music for the fourth never popped up. He was just STANDING in the only exit out of the damn Dear Air office building where it's child's play to get pinned down.

Even after we switched to Advanced those idiots were STILL making our lives miserable e.g. reopening doors when we knew hoards were coming in and stealing health packs to heal themselves with. Ugh. I lost count of how many times I had to literally kill Zoey because WE needed the health more than her. :bomb:

I will NEVER play the single campaign of this game unless I'm bored out of my mind.

I've yet to play this online, but I'm definitely up for it - I probably suck compared to most, but I'm at least good for a shotgun and a pipe bomb to clear out a room. If nothing else, I'm pretty delicious zombie bait.

I can deal with sucktastic people because I'm not that great of a player myself, but I know enough of the basics to make for a well rounded support member of a decent team (always try to melee out of a horde swarm, melee special infected off of teammates for a quick break + to avoid friendly fire damage, melee hunters to dodge/avoid getting pounced, save secondary weapons + ammo for hordes/Tanks/Witches on higher difficulties, crouch when taking point to avoid FF DMG, etc.).

I plan on playing a few campaigns later tonight so if anyone thinks they'll be available today let's schedule a time and get a lobby going.

I'm getting this game for PC because I prefer (AKA: I'm much more competent with) the mouse/keyboard combo and Valve has proven in the past to support the PC counterpart of their games better. Sounds like a lot of fun either way though.

Wow. I am having so much fun with this game. I played the entire No Mercey campaign in versus and I just couldn't believe how much more enjoyable the game is as opposed to when your playing campaign. Playing as the infected adds much needed variety to the game

If you play online you can yell at your teammates to come and get the hunter off of you. Not relying on the AI is pretty much a requirement for having fun with this game.

Well, I disagree with whom ever wrote the Gametrailers review. In a game where players travel in tight-knit packs, I can imagine the screams of anger because of accidental splash damage dealt by the rocket launcher. The assault rifle is effective at long-range shots, so there goes the argument for distance. Valve wants players to feel a sense of anxiety and unease. A rocket launcher has no place in this game.

yea the gametrailers.com video review was a little off there. :roll: I thought the reviewer only judged the game by its cover and not really playing the good context of the game.

I have also played the missions a couple of times and never once thought about a rocket launcher. The weapons are fine the way they are and it took me and a couple of my friends more than 4 hrs to beat every campaign mission. I still haven't even did the Blood Harvest mission. Maybe Ill complete it by this weekend.

Can the achievement for no survivors taking damage after the rescue vehicle being called be done on Easy, or is it an Expert achievement?

Any non-difficulty specific achievement requirements can be met on any difficult setting in the game to my knowledge. I recall a hilarious night of achievement hunting with some fine spirited randoms and we switched the difficulty to Easy in order to get the Crowned (Kill a Witch with one head shot) achievement.

Spent a few (ok, six) hours playing last night through No Mercy and Blood Harvest on Normal. Christ those are hard when people are disorganized. My first few run through were awesome. I had a great team that worked well even though no one used mics. The rest were very tough because we had a bunch of Rambos running off without the rest of the team. I still haven't managed to survive the waves of the horde and make it to the rescue vehicle because I'm trying to save their stupid asses. Still, overall a very fun game when you have a great team working together.

Yeah, I believe that's probably the main reason.

It's pretty much expected with all the deals now out for this game and with winter break coming up that activity will be pretty high in the up-coming weeks.

I love this game! When playing online i prefer the group to go rambo once your acquainted and know where to go. But i just hate it when one of your party members just wonders off to do his own thing and gets killed. It's bad enough already that ppl who play this game hardly communicate when the game is solely based on team communication. If you like to talk and looking for someone to play with send me a FR.
