And Gamestop was playing dumb about the preorder promotion so I didn't get the $5 off and when I asked about it they tried to explain to me that the $5 I use to preorder a game goes towards the $60 price of the game and that I'm not supposed to get it back... Hackers Griefing Left 4 Dead on 360

Witches and tanks galore ruining player experiences.

Most PC games see hacks and mods, but now even Left 4 Dead (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3157495) for the Xbox 360 is getting in on the action. Ars Technica received a reader tip (http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2008/12/09/xbox-360-left-4-dead-hacked-is-now-grief-tastic) that outlined some strange hacks seen in the 360 version of the game. "Recently, I joined a [Versus] game and found myself in a safe house at the beginning of a chapter," he said. "Suddenly, about 30 witches spawned in the safe house with me, followed by two tanks." The tipster's in-game character wasn't long for this world, of course, but his experience helped bring the 360 hacks to the public attention. A video (above) shows off the many hacks, from the funny to downright mean.
Though it went largely unnoticed, the Xbox 360 version of Team Fortress 2 (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3152175) has been seeing hacks for about a month, mostly consisting of low gravity and altered voice commands. Seeing as both games run on the Source engine, it's not surprising to see that Left 4 Dead has had the same happen, though much faster than its more comical cousin. Valve is a PC company first and foremost, and hasn't been very quick to support console versions of its games. But Left 4 Dead was seen by many as a push into the console market, so we'll have to see if this time they offer a patch.

Well I've never encountered the hacking, yet, but I also haven't played it in a few days.

I have the Orange Box for the 360 and I can confirm that Valve has not done anything to completely kill off the number of cheats and exploits in the game. There are still a good number of douchebags placing sentries in unreachable areas, glitching outside of the map, etc.

Unless you are planning on solely playing with friends, I would not recommend picking up Left 4 Dead for multiplayer.

I had a really frustrating experience with versus last night. It took forever to fill a room (we started with 4 of us). After twenty minutes of waiting for it to fill up we just started with two on the other side. The resulting bots were ridiculously overpowered as survivors. As a zombie it was an endless cycle of spawn, bots instantly turns to you regardless of the circumstances and kills you in one shot, wait twenty seconds to respawn and repeat.

For the next game we eliminated the bot problem, but we were grossly overpowered due to one weak member on our team. We ended up losing like 5,000-400. It's amazing how much of an impact having just one weak member has on your entire team. The game becomes ridiculously frustrating.

I think I may be done with this game for now. I've become bored with campaign on the easier difficulties and playing it on expert isn't what I would qualify as fun. It would probably be satisfying if I had a good team of three other players, but the chances of that happening are slim.

Not really, but the zombies do like 20hp per hit, so if you get surrounded you're screwed. Tanks have insane hp, if you don't burn them chances are they will wipe the whole team out.

I'm torn on this game. Part of me loves it; part of me hates it with a passion. My friend bought it and we cracked it open after the hockey game tonight.

Playing on split screen on Normal, it was pretty fun most of the way through. Then the last level of No Mercy was nigh impossible to beat. We kept getting raped by Tanks and swarmed when we tried to escape. On top of that, the AI "director", which I thought was supposed to make it harder when you were doing well and easier when you were dying, made it tougher and threw more zombies at us the more we lost. What the fuck kind of backwards ass logic is that?

We ended up quitting and beating the final chapter on Easy. As a result, no achievements for us. Stupid game. I really want to like it, but it's frustratingly cheap to the point of making me want to break the disc in half and shit on it. My friends on CAG who I play with most, Pure Apathy and FrankySox, were all gung-ho about the game but never play it anymore so I'm not sure it'd be worthwhile.

You can change the difficulty in game, just call a vote.

And it's most likely that you are new to the game and you suck at it.
Me and my buddy played it through with 2 humans and 2 cpus on advanced. Didn't really have any problems. Expert would be a different story.
The AI director, I don't believe ever really tries to make it easier for you. He just wants to you get comfortable before he unleashes the hordes. It's objective is to rape you, so anytime they see that you are vulnerable with your ass up, the horde's will cum.

It depends on how many friends you have that actually play this. If you only have 2 friends that play it then you'll get bored of it quicker. But if you have lets say 10 friends that are constantly on then you'll have more fun. I only have a few friends that play it and most the time is waiting for one of them to get on so that we can play it.

A few of us made an excellent run on Advanced the other day. No restarts until the final tank killed us all at the end. Same thing almost happened on the next run at the finale too, the last guy (sadly, not I) barely survived the tank and was making a run for the plane with his health in low yellow. I'm watching his screen and see him pan left right before getting to the plane and this hunter is in mid-flight right up on him. He somehow gets the shotgun blast off at the last second to kill that bastard and escape. Epic.

Every time we came across one it would down one of us then bash away while the rest of the team pumped bullets into it. It would go down but the unfortunate decoy would not last much longer.

The tank tends to chase after one person. If you're the one being chased just keep running and have your teammates shoot(the strategy is hard to use if it's just two human controlled players though). Molotovs also work well.

Also depending on what level you're in.. you can "trap them" by luring them into tight spaces and then just shoot away.

Not sure how 'pro' these tips are but this is what I've gathered from my personal experience stemming all the way back from the demo until now.

Building upon cmart's advice...

1) Always keep moving no matter what happens and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Getting pinned in a corner or up against debris is a guaranteed trip to the respawn room on higher difficulties where the Tank's health is ridiculous.

2) Use the Auto Shotgun & Molotov Cocktails to inflict maximum damage. On Adv & Exp these are your sole saving graces outside of a keen seasoned player knowledgeable on the map you're playing because as cmart mentioned sometimes you can temporarily trap the Tank in corners and just hammer it with little fear of retaliation.

3) If you aren't the designated Tank hunter (preferably someone with enough health (80+) to outrun it) then keep your frickin' distance to stay alive!

Tanks aren't exactly the most complex enemies in the game. More often than not their one track minds will force them to attack whomever is nearest to them whether or not they deem themselves a threat except for the initial charge. Try to use this to your advantage because whoever is unlucky enough to become the target of their initial charge is screwed until they've died unless someone else interferes with the battle (or is unfortunate enough for it to run near or back up into them).

When the music starts stay close enough to force it out in the open then break away as your hunter attacks or let them search for it while the rest of you hold your positions elsewhere. Both strategies pose their own set of risks (might not be able to break away in time and it attacks whomever it wants regardless or it spawns behind the rest of you while your hunter is elsewhere)... but it's far better than the four of you hammering on it placing your entire team in the perfect range for an easy debris or car chuck AND the chance to bounce between the lot of you.

4) LERN2DODGEKTHX. I cannot stress this point enough. More lethal than its initial haymakers are its ranged projectile attacks. I've seen these damn things chuck ANYTHING on the map from cars to concrete and even frickin' TREE TRUNKS. Nothing is impossible when it comes to these massive hulks of utter destruction so stay the HELL AWAY from anything you suspect is movable on the stage when maintaining your distance from them.

Cover is your friend. If you see it the animation starting try to hide or crouch behind anything than can absorb the blow for you e.g. steel garders, walls, cars, it doesn't matter. One hit from the debris on higher difficulty settings is usually enough to screw you. Once you've lost around 60 or more health your sprinting days are over and there's no way you'll out run it.

Anyway... I hope that helps a bit.

also, I believe the burning damage the tank takes does not stack with your weapon damage. so if a tank is lit on fire, it doesn't benefit you at all to shoot at it and get its attention unless you're trying to kill it before the flame kills it. the molotov sets it on a 30-40 second timer (depending on its difficulty) at which point it always dies. so decide early on whether you're going to kill the tank with autoshotties to the face or light him and run like heck and wait for him to die. don't do both.

I'm glad you mentioned that because I had no idea it didn't stack. Typical. Oh, and this is sort of common sense but if you're in a building or confined space high tail it out of there. The more space you have available to you the better and movable objects such as cars CAN EITHER KILL OR PIN YOU DOWN IN ONE HIT on some difficulties so beware. I've lost count of how many times people were literally trapped under cars and died because we couldn't rescue them in this game.

Tanks can also spawn in safe rooms and break those doors down as well. Plus the music doesn't always come on to warn you of an attack. =\

yea haha, i haven't had this much fun restarting a level in a long time. this game is so intense and fun when you have 3 teammates that communicate and can work together and help each other

game blows single player though. i tried that the other day and i could not finish a campaign it was so boring. i tried versus mode too and that was pretty fun, especially when you get to be the special infected.

There's no other experience I've had in a game that compares to playing No Mercy on Expert and beating the second tank and me and my friends making a mad dash to the helicopter, when suddenly one of them gets tied up by a smoker, but tells us to keep going and we do. Then all of a sudden a tank comes from out of no where and knocks my other surviving friend down and so it's only down to me and my deceased friends screaming at me "RUUNNNN!!!!" And I do and in less than a minute I become the sole survivor of No Mercy on expert with all my friends egging me to live on. Bravo Valve. Bravo.

Ugh... COD4 consumed my soul last night. I teamed up with two other guys I met weeks ago and our teamwork is STILL ridiculously good. We smashed face and thoroughly enjoyed it... until a bunch of rotten spawn camping Juggernaut/Last Stand using retards decided to dominate every Headquarters map we faced them on. We never had a chance because they always had two people camping in the spots it was going to spawn.

Team Deathmatch wasn't much better until we met these other braggart assholes who whined when we were paired up with them and lost, but mysteriously dropped when we dominated their asses 102 - 0 3 minutes into the frickin' game.

Ah well... I'm still down for a few campaigns tonight but if my friends show up again I'll probably take another rain check. >_>

Start upstairs in the house. When the tank comes light him on fire with a molitov and run over to the barn, go up top, hop down and then run back over to the house. Repeat.

Barricade yourselves in the bathroom upstairs. Get 3 people by the door and make sure they do nothing but melee like maniacs. The zombies shouldn't even hit you. Get one person up on higher ground than the 3 melee people and have him/her use his/her shotty/M16(I prefer the shotty because it gets multiple zombies at once and it's overall better against the tank) on the zombies. That person that's shooting will be the one that has to watch out for smokers. That's really the only thing that can get you.

Once you hear the tank music go out of the bathroom and turn right into that room. Go out the door and head straight for the barn. Go get ammo(if needed) at the barn and wait there. The tank will either come from the hole, in front of you or from the ladder area. If you're all at green health you can outrun the tank. Make someone get his attention and use the barn as an obstacle course. Make the tank climb a lot while you have 2-3 people shooting him. If he changes course and goes after someone else, tell that person to run like hell and continue with the strategy. The time he takes to climb up to the top level of the barn 3 people can unload 10 shotty shots on him with no problem at all. Communication is key. Always let your partners know where the tank is and make sure you have a partner with you at all times. You will encounter smokers every once in a while.

I made it to the finale on Advanced on No Mercy with some random people, but couldn't beat it. There was one AI and two quite bad players with no mic once we reached the last safe room. The one kept randomly shooting his teammates and eventually he wouldn't even take the game seriously and started killing everyone. Eventually I got pissed and killed everyone and did nothing until they all quit. I tried making my way to the rooftop, but I heard a tank coming and ran back to the safe room. Killed him and got my Tankbusters and Man vs. Tank achievements. At least I got something out of all of that.

What's the glitch?

When you get the final launchpad there's a door on the right that you can't open. It's that little raised building connected to the right of the ramp (when facing the rescue room from the pad). Anyway, the trick is to get on top of that building and get the horde to break down that door. So you attract their attention and get on the ledge over the door. They should rush it and break it down while they climb up at you. This room is "off the map". So you can hide in the back of the room through the entire rescue sequence including both tanks. Then run like hell for the pad and throw the pipe bombs to distract the horde. Good for The Untouchables.

that is the funniest thing I have heard all day. it also let's me know how different my parents are from other parents. when I was 15 they still wouldn't let me get M rated games (that didn't stop me but it meant I had to hide them).

But I agree that I find it really sad that people are using the moveable object glitch so much. The game doesnt track stats as far as I know (at least on 360) yet these douche bags still feel the need to ruin a game. 90% of the time you dont even get anything from doing it....either all of the humans quit or you spend the next 40 min endlessly dying trying to get them.

This needs to be patched with the quickness.

Every game I enter has 12 year olds in it, think I am going to take a break from public games until school starts. Anyways two nights ago there was a live tag that was cookie something. I thought it was a girl and so did some random guy who joined. He asked a bunch of questions like "what do you do for a living", "how old are you", "what do you do for fun" then eventually on about the third act he goes soo do you have a boyfriend and the cookie tag went "umm no I'm not gay dude" then us other two in the room just started rolling and the guy trying to pick up 13 year olds left.
I can't wait until dlc.

Honestly, does anyone know how to move the fucking forklift and generator out of the way. This glitch is just simply lame.

A friend and I got the generator out of the way once simply by shooting it. Like we got up against the left side of it, used pistols to start shooting it while pushing on it with our bodies. It might have been a fluke though.

Did the same thing, except I just did what the Infected did to push the generator. Pushed it by myself while crouched, also on its left side, and all four of us were out of the elevator in less than five seconds.

Might've been just a one-time thing, because I haven't seen it happen again, partly because I haven't run into the glitch a lot anymore.

I think another way to get it out of the way is by incoming horde attacks. Sometimes the zombies might push the thing out of the way if enough of them start piling on top of the generator. Take this with a grain of salt, but I've seen people get out of the elevator after a few Boomer vomits.

Is it me or is it getting insanely hard to find a enjoyable game anymore with this?

I dont know if its the Christmas crowd or what...but god damn did the community for this go down hill quick.

Only about 5 of my last 20 something odd games were any fun at all, whether it was playing as the survivors or the infected. I guess the skill gap between us Vets (started at the demo) and the freshmen is just to big.

This game just highlights how horrid a lot of people are at games as they continue to show the inability to grasp even the very basic of team work. Hell I think the last 5 games I played didnt have a single person talking besides me. How you play this game without a mic I cant even begin to understand.

There is just a ever increasing population of Rambo's, wanna be greifers and people who just plain have no idea what the hell they are doing to the point that they are completely handicapping the team.

I just played a match where it took longer to load then to completely crush the human team. They only made it 6% through the map....basically 1 hallway.

This is very disappointing.

The majority of the xbox live community do not understand teamwork. That's why in Halo 3 you see Team Slayer dominate the vast majority of online play. And then theres the few thousand of us that prefer team objective. But then when you play team slayer and you help take down an enemy, you get yelled at for stealing a kill. In a TEAM game it really shouldn't matter.

But to end that mini rant, I registered my team on MLG's gamebattles.com and we've lost two games so far. At least they've been somewhat close and challenging as opposed to dominating every random group of people on XBL. Maybe I should start recruiting...

It helped that the last guy felt like shooting a few stray zombies down the alley rather than help his three pinned teammates. I don't think he even noticed them. I think there is a lot of stuff you can figure out and like one a wall in one of the chapters its states something like David died 03-11-09 so we can assume that the game takes place sometime in late March 2009 (which is around my birthday)

I am tempted to just go to wiki but I am kinda liking figuring out the back story on my own.
