Fight Together...or Die Alone

A new and highly virulent strain of the rabies virus emerges and spreads through the human population with frightening speed. The pandemic's victims become grotesquely disfigured, widly violent psychopaths, attacking the uninfected on sight. One of the "lucky" few appearently immune to the sickness, you, unfortunately, are also trapped in a city crawling with thousands of the bloodthirsty infected. Alone, you are dead. But together with a handful of fellow survivors, you might just fight your way to safety.

Well, today we can confirm that Left 4 Dead is coming to Xbox 360. Why we are so excited about this game? May be because it smells like Counter-Strike and it has tons of zombies.

Developed by Turtle Rock Studios, Left 4 Dead is a co-operative multiplayer first person shooter in which you play as one of up to four people (called “Survivors”), who are immune to a virus that is spreading through the human population. Those infected with the virus have turned into psychopaths, who are weaponless and weak but found in large numbers when they attack.

The twist of Left 4 Dead is that you can also play as an infected, with your goal being to kill the Survivors before they escape the level. When you choose the infected side, you'll become the “Boss Infected”.

Although the Survivors team doesn't have player classes, there are four playable types of Boss Infected: the Boomer, the Hunter, the Smoker, and the Tank.

While playing as a Survivor will have you fighting the Infected hordes, playing as a Boss Infected involves stalking, waiting around a corner, and attack Survivors when they don't expect. As an Infected, you are weak, but you can respawn. The Survivors can not respawn, instead, they can be revived and only three times.

Ultimately, playing Survivor is all about action while playing as an Infected is about tactics. You have to choose the right moment, the right place, and the right way to attack.

The one up footage several weeks back was awesome. This video is too dark. The 4 player co-op ideas they have sound very sweet. They're also trying to incorporate a mode where you can go in a play as the bosses in other players campaign. Lots of big ideas = long delays. We'll see what's in the final game, but it looks very promising.

this would have been my game of the summer if it had came out already. i'm still debating whether to get it on PC or 360. if i get it on PC i'll have access to source engine mods, since i never picked up HL2, and i'll also get to play over the internet free. if i get it for the 360 i'll get all the great xbox live stuff, but i'll be dependent on having a live subscription year round if i ever desired to just pick up and play it. i tend to let my live subscription end from time to time when i'm too busy to game on a constant basis.

New tidbits and oh yeah...exclusive to X360 (and PC):
The new game from the newly-acquired-by-Valve studio Turtle Rock Studios, Left 4 Dead (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left_4_Dead) has had a fair bit of press from the PC side of the gaming press, but we've heard relatively little in relation to a console version. Well that's over, as OXM recently revealed (http://www.left4dead411.com/news/2008/02/l4d-xbox-360-revealed)any console. that the game will not only be appearing on PCs, but that the 360 version will be the only one appearing on The folks from OXM got to play two scenario's (read: levels) on PC and one level on a 360 dev kit. As a minor point (but a good sign) the names of those levels recall the game's horror roots: "The Hospital" and "Cornfield."

The second part to this news is the identity of the developer who will be handling the 360 port (Valve and Turtle Rock won't be working with it hands-on). That dev is the creator of Halo 2 DLC, Certain Affinity. TF2's absolutely HORRENDOUS lag aside, The Orange Box was a solid title. I don't see why consoles should be denied especially when you have competent developers coding it (at least on 360. I feel bad for the PS3 users with the sketchy framerate)

Valve's multiplayer survival-horror romp Left4Dead is due out later this year, but it won't be coming to the PlayStation 3. Said Valve's Doug Lombardi, "We're not PS3 developers -- we're doing PC and 360 like with Orange Box" (Via CVG). He said that Valve would consider a PS3 port if L4D ends up a success and if another dev wanted "to take on that investment and risk" to port the game.

Lombardi explained that the PS3 port of Orange Box came about after Electronic Arts offered to do the port -- and we've all heard the story of that one.

... sounds pretty unlikely to me. I'd expect to see Dead Rising show up on the PS3 before this.

Especially the idea that the gameplay is almost completely random (i.e. someone you know may go through Alleyway X with no one there but Alleyway Y has 2-3 zombies, while you could be at the same part on your game and end up fighting a horde of 20 zombies).

The game opens on the game's four characters at ground zero two weeks after the rise of the zombies. Left 4 Dead will have a short introduction, created by the team behind the Team Fortress 2 cut-scenes, but that will be the only cut scene gamers will see in Left 4 Dead.

I guess the little cinematics do not count as true cutscenes as I remember them saying that the way the game was made that certain triggers would happen depending on the teams skill level that you may not see if your team is not doing well. I think the example was like a huge gas station explosion if your team was doing really well when you got to that part or if your team was doing poorly, hardly any zombie resistance and no explosion.

i'm expecting this to be completely different than tf2. First off TF2 had a horrible lag problem and they took forever to patch, second it came out when COD4 and Halo3 were still strong and, TF2 is very different than your normal shooter. I'm expecting l4d to have a well sized community.. not on the level of halo3 or cod:waw but it will succeed.

Just received my weekly email from GS and it's showing the info above.

Also, the link above to http://www.ebgames.com/gs/landing/l4dearly/default.aspx is correct, though don't click on the link, as the referral link inside of it screws it up. You can just do a copy and paste and it'll work. You just need your receipt for the pre-order to get it taken care of.

Guys, listen. You do NOT have to pre-order to get into the early demo! All I did was use an old receipt from Gamestop and type the Transaction ID from when I bought Rockband 2 and 2 Guitars. IT worked.

Shrike posted a website like 2 pages back which is the early access registration site.

COPY AND PASTE the link into your browser and it will take you right there. Then just enter a transaction number from any gamestop receipt (they will show you what number to look for) and boom your done.

I was under the intent that online would be mass numbers, but after re-reading, I noticed that it's only like 4-player co-op and up to 8 players online (4v4)? That's kind of low. In CSS, it's at least like 16+, and that is fun.. It doesn't seem like 4v4 would be really intense. I understand that the game is based on the four survivors, but there should be a separate mode online where you can create your own player model and jump online in like intense CSS type Zombie Mode games. I could play zombie mode on CSS for hours on end, due to the fact that there were so many people in a game. Now, since it's only 4v4, eh..

There was never a situation I felt like I couldnt handle.
the Unlimited pistol Ammo is kinda cheap, but I do like the way you revive a downed partner and the healing system.
Your partners as well as key items and weapons are always highlighted so you never get lost or overlook something you may need.
the stages seemed kind of short, I hope they where just cut short for the demo.

I still haven't received an email from Gamestop after trying to input an old GS transaction ID on the web form. I decided to try again from my gmail account with just some made up ID, but I did find something out by Googling around. The first 5 numbers of the transaction ID are the store ID with a "0" in front of it. The number after the "/" is the register number. Not sure what the numbers after the "-" are, but maybe the transaction number for the day.

Anyway, we'll see if this works.

What level did you play on? I played on normal, all the way through expert and each one gets increasingly harder. There was even a boss that wasn't around on normal that wiped our group twice.

Yeah. I was playing an XBL online match, and we were all grouped together and as soon as everyone saw the witch, they turned off their flashlight. They were all like "turn off your flashlight!" and I didn't know -- by the time I did, the witch was already startled. Then we got raped. lol.

Wow. Better that i thought. I played with Draekon, HotShotX, and Phish and even though we died a lot, we kept coming back, i had a blast. Noteworthy moment; Draekon said "here they come", i look and see no less than 15-20 zombies rush by the door after him...it was great.

When I first saw videos of the game I thought "meh, another shooter" and I didn't like the movement of your character.

But after playing the demo with 3 other people, wow this game is great. I love how the enemies are randomly placed. The first play through there had to be 75+ in the alley then the next play through I chucked an explosive as soon as I rounded the corner expecting them but there was none. Definitely considering getting this game near release.

And Valve makes such great character designs.

Just played my first round. OMG! This game is like Dead Rising on a roid rage. I about shit my pants in that first house. Here I am thinking it's just going to be patches of 2-3 zombies and like 30 of literally flood the room in a span of 2 seconds. Then I see a single zombie and after the previous onslaught figure he's not going to be a problem until he breaks out in a 28 Days Later sprint and again I about shit my pants. Best demo I ever played, gave me more enjoyment than most full games all the way through. So glad I preordered this. It was a challenge even on normal difficulty, I'm almost afraid to bump it up a notch, lol. The game has a very retro zombie movie feel, I especially like the notes previous survivors wrote on walls. It adds to the atmosphere tenfold and really makes you believe you are the last group of people in a city overrun by zombies. For such a sparse plot it really has a subtle impact I wasn't expecting.

So what's the deal with the witches, are you supposed to creep past them? I shot one with a sniper rifle and my AI team scolded me. I remembered from the intro movie to shut off my flashlight but it still came at me.


And Valve makes such great character designs.

I like the character designs, but I REALLY liked the original character designs. The biker was so much better. Looked EXACTLY like Waylon from The Wire.
