View Full Version : What are your 5 favorite games of this current console generation?

Just curious what everyone thinks are the 5 best games of the current crop of consoles (PS3, Wii, 360.... not the handhelds) and why they think so.

My favorites would go like this

1) Gears of War
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/51NCA2XM9EL._AA280_.jpg

Groundbreaking in terms of graphics, captivating cinematic single-player mode, ability to play the compaign online with a friend, and some of the best multi-player out there. Just an absolute gem of a game and without a doubt a shoe-in for best game released so far on these systems.

2) Wii Sports
http://www.nintendofans.de/pics2/Wii-Sports-Cover.jpg

This is the only game that even comes close to GoW if you ask me. The best example of a pick-up and play game I've ever seen in my life. Excels greatly with it's intuitive and well-implemented use of the Wii remote, and truly shines in it's easy, casual without being to casual gameplay.

3) ES4: Oblivion
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/51PG9BG8XQL._AA280_.jpg

Oblivion is easily one of the most in-depth and massive games ever created. The awesome visuals and complex yet easy to manage gameplay make it a must-own in any library. I traditionally don't play RPGs but was wholly impressed with the game. The open-ended gameplay never loses sight and you can always find something to do within the world of Oblivion.

4) Resistence: Fall of Man
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/616XzmKsVVL._AA280_.jpg

Resistence is a classic example of a game that doesn't try to re-invent the wheel, but instead refine it. What it does succesfully is create the best single player campaign seen in a first-person shooter in some time, with enough weapon creativity to keep it fresh throughout it's lengthy but never boring story. Add in a solid mutli-player component that runs stable enough to make Epic games jealous and you have one of the finest offerings so far of this generation.

5) Dead Rising
http://g-ec2.images-amazon.com/images/I/61D0MC06JBL._AA280_.jpg

Although some people found Dead Rising to be a letdown, I thought it was anything but. Capcom delivered with an original, awesome hybrid zombie-action-survival horror - shooter - sandbox game. It combines alot of the best elements of many of these genres and throws in a decent storyline with a HUGE assortment of weapons and costumes to make an awesome adventure. Killing zombies is just plain fun, but gets devilishly entertaining when you're killing them with a katana while wearing a giant Servbot Head, Megaman Boots, and a tuxedo.

Honorable Mentions
- Warioware: Smooth Moves
A short, relatively uninteresting single player adventure that essentially just serves as training for the multi-player kills this game.

- Zelda: Twilight Princess
An awesome adventure and great game, but realistically it's a Gamecube game. Same reason I didn't include RE4 for Wii.

- Virtua Fighter 5
Great 3D fighting that sometimes gets overrated doesn't make the list because of the lack of online multiplayer.

- Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved
Easily the best downloadable content offered on any of the systems yet, but just isn't lengthy enough to make a spot on the list. Without a doubt the best value of the bunch though.

no offense, but screw the list if it aint got handhelds... >_<

I can't make a list really since nothing from this gen of consoles has wowed me much... I can only say Dead Rising was the first and only game that has ever made me feel like next gen gaming has finally come... other than that... um oblivion. And I don't believe in orders of stuff on a list.

sorry for the sucktastic post :)

1. Zelda Twilight Princess, because it drew me into its world and I love exercising my mind as well as my sword hand. I like the feel of using the remote to shoot arrows and the nunchuck to smack guys with my shield. And I will never forget the boss battle with that skeletal dragon, where you ride up the tower on the gear wheel thing. And the ending, with Midna--- I'll never forget it. I made a lot of great memories with Twilight Princess.

2. Oblivion, for the same reasons given in the original post. I can lose myself for hours in this game. I don't enjoy it as much as Zelda because I like Zelda's story and art style better.

3. Excite Truck, simply because it's a hoot to play. Lots of fun. The spray of the dirt brings back memories of Sega Rally Championship, and turbo blasting off of cliffs and sailing through the air while the soundtrack fades into the whistling wind is all rather exhilarating. Not to mention the control feels just right to me as I lean into the turns.

4. Wii Sports, because it's so much fun to introduce non-gamers to this hobby, and I like working on my bowling game.

5. No game is worthy, as of yet... I've played many other Wii and 360 games, but nothing I can honor with a top 5 spot. Maybe Super Swing Golf (Wii) or Fight Night Round 3 (360) could have taken it, but those games have been sitting unplayed on my shelf for a while now.

if RE4 is considered 'last gen' then I'll sub in Wii Sports

I only have a 360 so I'm kind of limited. PS3 will come eventually (after a new TV probably). Wii... maybe once the VC has like 15 games that I can't get for cheaper on my still alive and kicking 8 & 16 bit consoles.

1. Gears of War - My GOTY for 2006. Blew me the hell away. Looks incredible even on my non-widescreen SDTV. The reloading mechanic keeps every fight fresh because you always have to pay attention lest Marcus be stuck cursing at his gun while the Locusts approach. My only gripe is the last boss fight. It's out of proportion to the difficulty in the rest of the game. I don't mind a hard game but make the game scale appropriately up to the boss fight.

2. Forza Motorsport 2 - Wow, beautiful graphics, flawless gameplay. My only gripe is that further on they expect you to run races with way too many laps. Look, if I can win in 3 laps, I'll still be winning after 10, quit making me waste 30 minutes doing what I could have done in 5.

3. Call of Duty 2 - The launch title that I didn't get until it was 14 dollars at CC. Oh well, still worth playing. Neat damage mechanics, great weapons. The parts where you're in trucks/tanks are a total bummer.

4. Oblivion - Last year I got out of the Marines and spent about a month just sitting around in my house without a job or school. To fill that month I played Oblivion like it was a full time job (40+ hours a week) and never got bored of it. If that's not a mark of greatness, I dunno what is.

5. F.E.A.R. - I don't have a computer that can run F.E.A.R. but I wish I did. The game is atmospheric and fun but seems to be lacking a bit. The corridors and whatnot look pretty bland. Still, hitting guys with the grenades in slow motion makes it all worthwhile.

Strongly, STRONGLY disagree on Wii Sports.

I don't think I have 5 games yet, but I really like Dead Rising, and Resistance.
I'll play Super Paper Mario tomorrow, so perhaps that will join the list.

I think that Wii Sports ranks about an 8.5 for me. It loses a lot of points on replayability and depth, but it's just a lot of fun to play. I'm sure it could easily get swept off my list with another fun, interactive but DEEP game.

Only having a Wii makes this rather difficult, damned no-handhelds rule... my 5th favorite game isn't very good. Here's a list for lists sake (not really as bad as I thought):

Zelda: TP
Super Paper Mario
Trauma Center
Wii Sports
Big Brain Academy

Only one I'd expect to remain on a "best of" list at the end of this generation is Zelda, so I'll stick with that; SPM is a maybe. I expect Mario Strikers to join it soon though.

And even with less with a group of friends (male and female). No one could really get into it.

We must be the sole party in the universe who didn't find it that fun though.

Really? I find Wii Sports to be the cream of the Wii crop. Like I said, I find the combo of pick-up and play matched with just enough depth to keep it interesting but not overbearing really makes it for me. In terms of replayability, after a small lull me and my friends started playing it alot again recently. That and Street Fighter 3 are pretty much the only games we can ALWAYS go back to, so that says alot to me.

I don't know that I even have 5 favorites for this gen, at least not yet. I'd say Zelda and Wii Sports are the two biggest for me, but that's just because I played them the most. Dead Rising and Gears of War would get a mention, but they can't be that big of a draw for me since neither convinced me to buy a 360.

- Gears of War: For the awesome graphics, gameplay and multiplayer

- Zelda: TP: It's freakin Zelda! Beautiful graphics, great use of the wii-mote, and one of the best launch games I've ever played.

- Virtua Fighter 5: Simply the best fighting game I've ever had the pleasure of playing.

- Oblivion: I've dumped more time into this game then I have studying in school. Last summer it took over my life

- Ninja Gaiden Sigma: Just got it, but it's already a favorite. Solid gameplay, new missions, crisp graphics...plus dual swords!

I didn't feel like putting a sports title in there as the 2008 version will take it's spot, but NBA 2k7 I played just as much as all the games on that list, along with madden 07.

As you can see I <3 xbox 360

NBA 2k7 is my second favorite game of this generation besides Gears. It just has so many improvements from the NBA games from PS2/Xbox and I played/play it so damn much. Like I said in another thread I'm pretty sure the NBA 2k series developers are the only developers that care about their final product. Of course there were bugs in 2k7, your not going to get perfect but the animations on all the players went above and beyond. I don't expect less in terms of quality with 2k8.

Ya 2k7 was possibly a perfect basketball game. I'm worried that 2k8 may actually downgrade it.

I only have the one console of this generation (the Wii) - not even a DS or a PSP. I haven't purchased a handheld since the original GB. As such, any list I give would be... well, crap. And besides this, Starcraft - the decade old 2d RTS - has been taking most of my time lately. For the Wii, I'm gonna go with...

1. Zelda
2. Sports
3. Paper Mario
4. Godfather
5. Trauma Centre

The first and last of those being the only game to disappoint me thus far.

5. Gears of War - This is a lot of fun to play, but only if I have 2 people. I really find the computer AI to be really crappy when playing through it by myself. With a friend though, loads of fun.

4. Super Paper Mario - This was a really fun game to play through. Loaded with good humor and interesting gameplay that really made you think once in a while.

3. Zelda: TP - Great story, great control, memorable boss fights, lots of replayability. The controls really get you into the action.

2. Guitar Hero II - I'm a sucker for music games, and this one keeps me coming back day after day.

1. Wii Sports - While I don't play it more than GH2, it is the ultimate pick up and play game. My fiancee's mother (who has never played a video game in her life) played Bowling with me once, and now asks me to bring the Wii over when I come over. I also had a gaming party with a bunch of friends. One of them brought an Xbox and a bunch of games, and we had tons of games to play. We ended up playing nothing but Wii Sports for 8 hours straight.

1. Guitar Hero 2 (Third favorite franchise of all time)
2. Gears of War (They even figured out a way to make walking down a step ladder badass)
3. Marvel Ultimate Alliance (Best Non-FPS, 4 player multiplayer game on the 360)
4. Crackdown (Fantastic game in its own right, but bonus points for the Halo 3 Beta)
5. Fight Night Round 3 (One of the only "realistic" sports games I can fully enjoy)

On the radar (Yet to play):
Dead Rising (360), Super Paper Mario (Wii), Sonic (Wii), Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii), Viva Pinata (360), The Darkness (360), Resident Evil 4 (Wii)

I really need to get a Wii.

- Dead RisingI understand what you mean, because I was really hyped about the game due to liking many of its developer's games and hearing good things about it. I just couldn't get into it and didn't have any fun with it.

My dishonorable mention would be:
1. Sonic The Hedgehog (I liked most every Sonic game including the Adventure games and Heroes. I shouldn't discuss my feelings at this game. Still waiting for my next gen platformer), PS3/360
2. Dead Rising (I was super hyped about the game, and just couldn't enjoy it), 360
3. Dead or Alive 4 (Love DoA, but online was laggy for me, and offline A.I. was too cheap IMO, so I couldn't really play it), 360
4. Cromehounds (Big mech fan, but found single player boring and didn't care for online), 360
5. Genji: Days of Blade (I still enjoy the game, but I will not deny it isn't as good as the first, which I really liked), PS3

Gundam Crossfire on PS3 could be one (I badly wanted it), but the reviews scared me off shockingly.
I still say fuck to not letting us post handhelds...Good idea. :)

1. Daxter (PSP)
2. Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters (PSP)
3. Tekken Dark Resurrection (PSP)
4. Mega Man Maverick Hunter X (PSP)
5. Sonic Rush (DS)
