NPD demographics study - Not all Wii owners are old women?

To be honest, this study looks like a lot of numbers were tossed around until something looked newsworthy, but here is a summary of NPD's study of the different gamer groups, "Gamer Segemention II".

Of the 191 million gamers in the US (from a sample of 11,638):

- 33% are "Avid PC Gamers," who play 13.6 hours a week on PC or Mac, and buy 1.4 games per quarter

- 22% are "Secondary Gamers," who play 6.5 hours a week on PC or Mac, only a third also owning a PS2, buying only 0.8 games per quarter

- 20% are "Avid Console Gamers," who play 10.7 hours a week, own 1.6 consoles and 0.8 handhelds, and buy 1.9 games per quarter

- 15% are "Mass Market Gamers," who play 8.9 hours a week (mostly PS2 and PC), own 1.8 consoles, and buy 2.0 games per quarter

- ?% are "Casual Kid Gamers," who play 3.6 hours a week, own 1 console and 0.8 handhelds (PS2 and GBA), and buy 0.8 games per quarter

- 2% are "Heavy Gamers" (that's us), who play 39.3 hours a week (mostly on 360 and Wii), own 2.8 consoles and 1.9 handhelds, and buy 13.1 games per quarter (gonna go out on a limb and say most of that is 360).

So, the shocking conclusion is that those who play the most games buy the most games.

PS2 is a handheld????

I'm between "avid console" and "mass market".


I own 3 consoles (PS2, 360, Wii), buy maybe one game every quarter, and play very erratically, sometimes 20 hours a week, sometimes 3. I rent most all of my titles, buying games is way too fucking expensive, and if I did buy games I'd never be able to play the number that I do.

We're only 2% T.TFor reference, 2% of 191 million is about 4 million. There are currently about 8 million 360s + Wiis sold in the US.

I'd like to ask how you could buy 0.8 games? THat's what amkes the servay stupid. 1.9 handhelds and 2.8 consoles? Yeah. Make sense of that.

averages don't have to be exact, which does make them kinda dumb looking. a range would work better, but the averages give people a basic idea. .8 games in a quarter = the person buys 3 or 4 games a year.

And 11k is actually a pretty decent sample size, if you compare it to political surveys and the like, where they usually poll around a thousand people. Somehow who is more statistically inclined can weigh in on what makes for a valid sample.
