This actually sounds really cool. One of my son's favorite things in Zelda was the bug collecting and exploring. Fish photo collecting and deep sea exploring would be a great educational activity. It's an aspect of video games that hasn't been exploited in many years.

I was stoned last night when I read about this and got REALLY excited. Like the dude before me, I had lots of fun in Ecco on DC just cruising around as a dolphin, and the concept of swimming around a beautiful ocean and exploring sunken ships and coral reefs while listening to Kruder and Dorfmeister makes me want to skin up a few Js in anticipation.

Hopefully, this game has what it takes to replace Jet Set Radio as my game of choice to fall back on when I'm high and want to play something that makes me smile!

Here is another interpretation of the game's features from a Jgamer.

- Dolphin partner/friend. You can play games with him or catch a ride.
- Female supporter Katherine Sandy.
- Play with fish, feed them and take pictures! They will also follow you around.
- Catch, stroke, poke.
- Hand actions/gestures
- Aquarium with a encyclopedia with information on the fish you saw/caught
- Accept offers and give underwater tours, take pictures, communicate underwater,...
- WiFi diving with friends, you can visit a friend's ocean, or your friend can come and visit your ocean.
- Custom MP3 soundtrack option (!)

There are a myriad of possibilitites to spice up a game like this and would make for a deep gameplay experience (no pun intended). A random shipwreck, realistic geographic phenomenon, and rpg elements like buying differrent types of equipment, submersibles, cages, nets, cameras, light, etc.

I originally thought of Pokemon Snap as well, but if it ends up being Pokemon Snap with fish instead of Pokemon, I would pass. Next generation gaming should be evolving to take on a more complex scope instead of rehashing an old window with new curtains.

Pokemon Snap was a lot more fun than PS2's Everblue. IIRC, you looked around and sold treasure you found for better equipment to make your diving experience better. Pokemon Snap as least let you interact by throwing crap at the things you're taking pictures off.

Well, if they want to get my money for this new game, it has to be Snap, Everblue, and much more. There is so much that can be integrated into these simulation type games that are hardly ever done in order to shovel out a new title and make a fast buck.

That doesn't preclude it from happening in the future. I'll agree it doesn't bode well for patches, but it's no absolute indication it can't be done.

If a game could have downloadable content, seems like it could be patched.

But I'm not the one running the backend show here so I have no clue.

Forever Blue got 10/8/9/8

I was just about to post it. A bit surprising, but good. I just hope the game lives up to those scores.

Forever Blue
- feels a little like a simulation, exploring areas gradually
- clever production sucks you in totally
- with the change of camera view, you can get lost at sea (pun?)
- you can explore the aquatic life as much as you want or you can go looking for events
- there's lots of stuff you can do, play at your own pace
- production is great, you can feel the mystery and magnificence of the ocean
- thanks to the effects of the mysterious music, the game feels very real

Well, assuming the game supported it, you magically had enough bandwidth, you wanted to sit right up close to your Wii, you found a way to hear the other person, and you found some way to keep the unwieldly little thing near your mouth while holding the Wii controls, I don't see why not.

I'm sure it's a full game, it's Artdink after all.

I'll be the first to admit that gameplay > graphics. However in something like this realism would provide a more immersive experience.

Actually, the plural of fish can be fish OR fishes. "Fish" refers to 2 or more fish of the same species, while "fishes" refers to a 2 or more fish of different species. So in fact the poster's use of the word "fishes" was correct, hehe.

it was in some multiplayer hands-on review, which I can't seem to find now. They were talking about how it was weird playing this to Nine Inch Nails. They sadi before each dive you can pick a song, but your stuck with it for the whole dive.

found it: http://wii.ign.com/articles/846/846342p1.html
"On another note, the title does enable the ability to listen to your own MP3 music while you dive. Going from a slow, melodic tune to Nine Inch Nails really changes the whole experience, we can tell you. Unfortunately, you can only select one song per dive and it simply repeats over and over again -- maybe the dumbest decision ever. (Obviously, songs don't translate to the online experience; you will still be able to listen to your Nine Inch Nails locally, but your friend won't hear it.) "

Suitable choices for music, as discussed previously in the thread:

Dire Dire Docks from Mario 64

Any Monkey Island music, notably the theme, or a medley (Tybee's idea)

I wonder what the size/length limits for the mp3 are. Because then, there would not be a lot stopping me from making a huge mp3 full of various songs.

Portishead must be played underwater and a little Lamb for good measure. Something about spooky ambience and nasal female vocals mixed with water just works. Probably the new Magnetic Fields as soon as I get it.

All that said, is there any point to being able to play the music from the game itself? I don't know what that would be, but I could be missing something. With most games, I just turn off the included music anyway, and leave the sound effects through the TV and play my own music through the receiver. This eliminates any stress over the supposed one-song limit for me.

I played an hour or two yesterday. It takes a bit to get used to the slowness (listen to podsast to distract myslef). The "cusomiztaion" is like 2 choices each for sex, tan, hair. Out of the water the animation is not smooth. One part i hadn't heard of is you get to pick what goes in the nearby area aquairum and then you can swim in there. The dolphin training is neat so far. If you are diving late in the day it's easy to get a little lost. Its still a fun game though.

I just played this game for the first time today.

I have to say, it's refreshing to see a game of this type. After an hour or so of this relaxing excursion, I leaned back and took a nap.

Honestly, it's been a long time since I've played a game that just relaxes me. No goals, really, no distractions. Just a game for exploration's sake.

I'm with Shivy. There's no goals, no time limits, no bosses, no anything. You get an order to do a topological study (I think), and at the end, the guy even says "there's no hurry on this".

On the deck of the boat, there's a lounge chair. You can sit in it and just watch the ocean. I've been sitting in this chair for probably about an hour now while I got on the computer, checked CAG, etc. It's gone from day to night twice, the music is so relaxing.. clouds floating by.. just so.. peaceful. The daytime had clouds floating by, the nights seem to always be clear skies with a great view of the stars. No rain or other weather effects. If there were a view sitting on a beach staring out into the ocean, I would leave this game on 24/7.

It's just really unbelievable how stress-less this game is. And I haven't even gotten to the diving portions yet!

Oh, and you can play custom soundtracks, which is awesome. I need to find some relaxing music.

After playing this game a bit more, I'm proud to admit that it has toppled Mario Galaxy as my new favorite Wii game.

There is just so much to explore down in the ocean they've created in the game, and I find myself amazed at how quickly the time seems to pass. I found some undersea ruins, and it was almost 3 hours before I realized how long I had actually been playing.

This game comes with my highest reccomendation. It's different from what most consider a traditional game, but I think that just about anyone will be pleasantly surprised once they give it a chance.

Finally got a chance to go diving with a friend. I was surprised that it worked as well as it did. The two of us explored some dark caves and found all sorts of neat fossils. As with many Nintendo Online games, communication was a problem, but in this game's case, it adds to the effect, since you really wouldn't be able to communicate beyond hand signals to another diver below the surface.

Also, I put together a series of music from my own collections. There's some Shadow of the Colossus, ICO, and Uru: Ages Beyond MYST, in there.

Also, Zen Davis, as much as I didn't think that you're "soundtrack" would fit my sensibilities, I have so say that it strangly works in a way.

I'm on the fence about this one. Part of me loves these quirky sorts of games. The other part of me thinks this is a game that might be fun for a couple of hours, and maybe another hour or 2 of showing friends, but that's it.

That being said, I wonder how easy the controls will be in this. My almost 3 year old nephew loves fish (going to get him a fish tank pretty soon), and loves playing games. He might really get a kick out of swimming around and taking pictures of fish (when he just turned 2, he would go to sleep playing Tony Hawk 4, I would just put it on infiite practice, and he would skate around until he fell asleep on the chair. I let him play other games now, but most are too complicated for him to get any timing down. That leans me towards buying.

I think I'll wait for a few reviews and re-evaluate.

You don't actually take pictures, you catalogue them by petting them, it is then entered into a book that can be veiwed onthe boat. Its a pretty slow game, that can either be the perfect spped for a kid, or too slow for short attenion span kids. The controllers are super easy, you just point and hold the b to swim. YOu use a and shake the wii mote to pet. Occasionally you use the d pad and the + button.

To add to what you said, you can also set your diver to "auto swim" where you still have to point in the direction you want to go, but you don't have to hold down the B button. I agree - the controls are incredibly easy.

The game is worth $30 for the relaxation factor alone. After my first cave dive last night, I couldn't recommend it more

I'm only about 3 hours in, but it seems to me you get upgraded equipment by taking clients on dives and basically making your bosses happy. I've gotten some new gloves and a depth regulator already, but I'm really itchin' to do some night dives and don't know what I need to do to get the gear for that.

Damn I tried to copy my save onto my SD card but it wouldn't let me. Can anyone else copy it to an SD card?

nope, the game prevents it.

this is my biggest (only, really) complaint about the wii... they restrict what stuff can and cannot be copied to SD cards. there's actually quite a few games that won't copy over, as well as a few VC save states. it's awful. i want to be able to back up everything, not just the stuff that nintendo/developers let me.

it's the online games, mostly. if it has any NWFC stuff, it doesn't copy to an SD card, to keep online data from duplicating... endless ocean, ghost squad, guitar hero 3, pokemon battle revolution...

and then some stuff that doesn't make any sense like meet the robinsons and splinter cell

My copy finally arrived last night and I played for three hours without noticing the time passing. The suggestion of Air - Pocket Symphony was a good one, and I really enjoyed pairing the game with Luna albums. It's hard to describe the strange elation that comes from petting a fish and poking a penguin.

Just got my copy last week!

Just got it and it's a great game.

I definitely don't regret however here are some things that really annoyed me:

horrible hub world - when you're above the ocean suddenly everything looks like crap. The land by you lacks much needed depth, and as result you're reminded you're playing a game. Things could've been better....

Graphics overall - Some great very atmospheric graphics and nice animations, but none of it really wows me graphically. With Galaxy even though the graphics weren't on par with ps3 games I was still wowed, I can only imagine being wowed by this game if it came out in 2004 or earlier.

Collision detection - I hate seeing fish go through whales. It really ruins the feel for me.

Besides that great game, love my explorative gameplay.

I got mine today.

Oddly enough sometimes there IS a point to it. The ship cabin has an email where you get instructions on various tasks that can be completed and areas to look in, etc. Some missions are about taking photos of various fish, escorting other divers, following dolphins, stuff like that. None of the missions are actually necessary if you want to ignore them, but some lead to collectable items and such.

When I bought it I was SERIOUSLY worried this was going to be like Aquanots Holiday for the PS1 (If you know me that's one of my #1 most hated games), but it's actually very nice. And I enjoy teh exploring aspect of the whole thing.

Holy crap, this happened to me too! What a coincidence...that fact really does suck becasue it dissuades you from playing multiplayer. It really is quite frustrating when you find something new in multiplayer (besides trinkets and treasure, which you do store for good) and you know you will just have to find it again when playing alone.

It's weird. I played it for an hour and found it somewhat boring, and thought maybe I shouldn't have ignored all the reviews. Then i played it for a few more hours, and it's incredibly rewarding to find rare stuff, either by chance, or by looking places you've never looked before. It's really a great game, and honestly my only complaints are the lack of speech--I have no problem with this in games like Zelda, but in a game like this that I allow my daughter to play, it get super old having to read everything out loud--and the fact that the otherwise beautiful graphics are totally jagalicious.

Yeah like I said it really is a must buy for people into the ocean, fish, marine biology. The names of the fish are accurate and real, and as a PADI cert. diver myself, it is amazing how much of the look and feel of diving and underwater exploration they recreate.

It is jagalicious though (and brave of you to say considering the prevalence of Wii fanboys who like to flame as soon as someone says the Wii's graphic could be better) but overall I'd say it is one of the better looking Wii games, at least when you're underwater.

When you're above water on your boat, it is hands down the worst graphics I've seen on the wii (and this includes VC games...just kidding...kind of). The boat graphics are really bad. Luckily this is a very small minority of the time spent in game.

It is jagalicious though . . . . When you're above water on your boat, it is hands down the worst graphics I've seen on the wii (and this includes VC games...just kidding...kind of). The boat graphics are really bad.

There are times on the Wii when I can excuse a game's terrible graphics if there are immersive motion controls. And then there are times when the jags make me want to waggle my component cables into a noose around my neck and then throw my HDTV off the roof, with me attached.

So regarding the jags in Endless Ocean, are you playing on component cables? Are the jags bad enough to take away from your enjoyment of the game?

I'm interested in this game, but I'm also afraid of cutting my wrists to sweet release on the jags.

pittpizza
02-05-2008, 10:40 AM
Yeah I'm playing on component cables. The thing is, the graphics are only bad on the boat and for every half hour spent in teh game, you're only on the boat about 5 minutes. Once you go into the cabin, or train the dolphin or whatever area you go to on the boat, the presentation improves, but walking around on the boat is really atrocious.

I think they put it best in teh IGN review where Cassamasina basically said something like "It looks like there were two developers, one for underwater and one for the boat" It really does suck balls compared to the underwater elments.

Is it completely crazy to think that they might have intetionally made the boat portions suck so that the underwater parts seem better?

Ironically, (think I've said this but I'm not sure) I am a PADI Diver and can attest to the fact that, while prepping for a dive on the boat, IT SUCKS!!! Putting a wetsuit on, a BCD (Bouyancy Compensator Device), a weight belt, etc... sucks balls until you get into the water, then it is a whole new world (you love Aladdin, admit it).

So while the boat parts suck especially the graphics and walking, (walking around is just completely fuckin ridiculous. It's like they intetnonally made it horrible just to fuck with us) ALL of that makes up a VERY small minority of the game.

So not getting Endless Ocean b/c the graphics/gameplay of the boat parts suck is akin to not getting Twilight Princess b/c you don't like the start screen.

To answer your question, YES the graphics and walking mechanics suck bad enought hat they take away from the enjoyment of the game for a VERY SMALL MINORITY of the gameplay (above sea level), but NO, at the end of the day it really is a non issue. You won't cut your wrists b/c you won't be dockside long enough to go crazy over it.

Much more problematic for me is the fact you can't store species info while playing co-op.

mephitical

I'm also playing on component cables on an LCD and nothing graphically has drawn me out of the game. I don't have the boat/overworld problem with the game that everyone else seems to either. The controls on the boat are exactly the same as in the water, it just feels clunky because you're walking and not gliding (which I think only helps to enhance the feel of the underwater segments). I don't think the overworld graphics are terrible either; they retain the feel of the game for me, which is that of a PC game circa 1992.
