I kept reading about how great this game was (fond memories from people's past) so I downloaded it.
I like the old games and really like it when I find a game that's off the beaten path that's really good (Bomberman would be a good example of that).
So, I download TJ&E and play it.
I don't get it.
So far it basically is just wandering around and every so often you find a present which you can open which appears to give you special powers. There doesn't seem to be much to this game.
So, that leaves me with: What am I missing?
Obviously a lot of people liked this game quite a bit so I've got to be missing something here.
Can anyone fill me in on the gameplay beside that which I already know: Wander around, find presents to get special powers, find parts of the spaceship, go up to the next level.
Thanks.

That's all there is to this game. Seriously. But I still like it because of the characters (insane dentist, hitting Santa Claus with tomatoes), style (music, weird representations of earthlings), uncertainty (which present should I open? Will it help me or will I go flying off the edge of the world in rocket skates?).
I suppose there's no use in convincing you to like this game. It is what it is, and you either like or you don't. I hope it grows on you. Play it with a friend. It's more fun that way.

The game sucks.
Nostalgia keeps most of these games alive.
Luckily, I knew it sucked back then too. Shoulda got Goemon.

Ok - I hoped I was missing something. I'll try playing it with my daughter to see if that livens things up but so far I'm unimpressed.
I read somewhere that this game would have likely been Sega's (unofficial) mascot game had Sonic not come along. Because of that I was kind of hoping I was missing some part of the gameplay that would make it more fun.
Thanks for the info.

And drink/take alot of beer/recreational drugs. Or do something else that's fun whilst playing it.

The game's big strength was its 2-player co-op. There was a lot of strategy that could be employed and it was blast. 1 player though... yeah, it was kinda passable.

part of it is nostalgia. but the games strengths are its humor, some of which is very 90s while other parts are still just as funny and the multiplayer.
the game is really all about co-op, playing by yourself just isnt the same. and i dont think your playing with your daughter is quite the same as playing with your contemporary friend or relative.
there are no save points (well there is a save state with the wii) so this game was all about sitting around for a few hours with a good friend and enjoying the game. its not always easy either, total bummers, randomizers, those god damn tornados and spontaneous tomato fights with your friend make the game much more difficult, and enjoyable.

Wasn't the point to find all the parts of the spaceship so you could get home?
While not much of a plot, that was the objective.

Yes, you roam the maps looking for the pieces of your wrecked spaceship. I agree it doesn't hold up very well today but I still love the game.
