Features

Virtua Fighter™ 5, the game that pioneered the 3-D fighting genre is back and available on Xbox 360™. Virtua Fighter 5 raises the bar for console fighting games with all the features fans know and love, plus enhanced gameplay mechanics, leaderboards, and online multiplayer.
Two new characters: El Blaze and Eileen round out the cast of 17 dynamic characters. El Blaze is a Mexican wrestling champion who uses the Lucha Libre fighting style, and Eileen, originally from China, uses "Kou Ken," or a monkey-style Kung Fu fighting style.
Customization: Customize your character with the enhanced attachment system and customization engine. This gives players more flexibility than ever before when creating their characters.
Character portability: An Xbox 360 exclusive, character data portability makes it possible to save characters created in Quest Mode via Memory Unit, and play with those characters against other people's customized characters in VS Mode on other Xbox 360 systems.
Fighting capabilities: New offensive moves let players easily slip around their opponent from the side and back, allowing players to be more strategic with their battles.
Next-gen presentation: Stunning, highly detailed 3-D fighting environments inspired by locales around the world allow players to challenge their opponents in unique arenas. HD resolution widescreen is complemented by 5.1-channel Dolby® Digital surround sound.
Multiplayer: Online multiplayer enables players to compete worldwide with an online two-player versus mode via Xbox LIVE®.
Leaderboards: See how you stack up against other players on the game leaderboards. http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/v/virtuafighter5/

This game will be coming out later this year, but why not start a thread now!?

MarkMan is around enough that I believe he will actually update the initial post with newer information (no disrepect to the OP of the other thread). Plus he gets info on fighting games before most of us so I am going to let this be the official VF5 thread.

And if this is really online I will definately be buying this and the stick.

I hope there isn't any lag and they get it right. This is pretty great news.

When Virtua Fighter was revealed to not be the PS3 exclusive we originally thought it would be, fans took solace in the fact that the 360 version would be coming out months down the line, after they'd gotten all the joy they could out of the title. Well now we know why the 360 version was delayed so long, as Sega announces online multiplayer functionality for the Xbox 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5!

I'm interested to see if things actually work. I'm not a fan of fighters, but if they can manage to make the game work online with the usual 360 latency and sustain VF5s graphics, it will definately be a step in the right direction.

I can just imagine the anger-induced strokes that will occur by hardcore fans when they lose because of lag. :) Hope all goes well.

edit: and why do these posts have to turn into fanboy bait..sigh.

Here's the Press Release:
PRESS RELEASE

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN (July 6, 2007) – SEGA® Europe, Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. announced today that the highly-anticipated arcade fighting game, Virtua Fighter™ 5 for the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, will feature an online versus mode at launch in Autumn 2007. The Xbox 360™ version of Virtua Fighter™ 5 is based on the latest arcade version update and features both analogue-stick and D-pad control, as well as vibration support. The game also includes an improved Quest mode featuring more CPU rivals, items, and emblems for character customisation. The DOJO mode has added features including leaderboards, training move settings, improved throw and escape training, and the option to change your opponent’s position and recovery type. The old thread thread had said our inside man(Markman) knew there was online mode and he knows his stuff.

Thats why casey(mod) said its fine if this thread becomes the new one.

Today i guess many places confirmed what we already knew to be true, online play to our version of VF5 :)

Thanks Mark!

I heard Sega doesn't want to cannabalize its arcade sales by putting online on the PS3.
If it is patched, I would prefer to play it on dedicated PS3 servers rather than have "host advantage" which I experienced in Gears.
Either way, great news for Xbox 360 owners.

I could see that...though I don't think anything could stop VF from being insanely popular in the arcades there.

there will be lag and it'll probably ruin the game. sorry, just don't want anyone to have high hopes for this and get hurt when it comes out  jk.

It's about giving the big FU to first generation PS3 adoptors who supported Sega by buying Virtua Fighter 5. Atleast for now anyways. Microsoft probably paid Sega a handful of change to pull this one.

I think it will be constantly patched. Last I played DOA it wasn't too laggy unless you were fighting the folks in Japan or kids who were downloading massive porn while playing DOA. I had a good few days of no lag matchs versus people in the Eastern USA. It really has to do with their area/bandwith.

I'm with you 100% on that comment Sean.

Fighting games + Lag= insanely annoying

In terms of video games, nothing annoys me more than even just the slight amount of lag in fighting games. I realize not everyone has VF5 or fighting game competition in their area. I also realize not everyone has friends that love fighting games or want to learn VF5. For me personally, I'd rather play alone then have to sit through the kind of lag I randomly get on DOA4, 3S and especially HF.

That just how I am though, it's not to knock anyone who is excited about the online feature of VF5.

All I want is the PS3 version (which I bought in losing patience for the 360 version + the crappy D-Pad) to have the Version C update/patch.

it looks like the exact design as the DoA4 stick and the Fighting Stick 3 for the PS3. If it's not changed at all, then it'll get the job done. It's a little light, but controls very well.

Question, how would a patch add the following:

Add a option in the main menu

Create a matchmaking system on said menu

Optimize the gameplay to reduce/eliminate lag?

My guess is that they are going to rerelease the game with version c and online for of course the same $60 pricce point, its time for "Show me the money!!!!!"

and a lot can be added with a patch. See: the ninja gaiden hurricane packs. they basically copy over the whole game.

Anyway, is the Hori VF EX stick $49.99 or $59.99? J&R's says $59.99 online, but if it's $49.99 @ GameStop or something, I'll just pick it up elsewhere.

I still have VF5 360 on my to-get list. If the online is laggy, then maybe I'll just play it offline awhile to see what achievements I can unlock then get rid of it.

Somebody else in Australia (were the game is already out) posted a video of two online matches. While he played like a scrub using Akira (all he did was low jab and kick a guy to win) the game looked like it played without any hiccups.

It's funny, When I first asked the GS employee if he had any Arcade Sticks he said, "Yeah hold on, I think we got a few of those in the back." A few seconds latter he brings out something that looks like this:

I played a ranked match against you today. You played Lei-Fei and I had Akira. It was such a fun match, my grab missed and yours connected which is what determined your victory. I'd like to play agaist you some more, I need my revenge lol. I'll send you a FR, please accept. Good game.

My Wal-Mart didn't get it yet so I can't play yet, but if anyone wants to add me when I get the game over the next week send me a request: Jagr69.

If anyones wondering why I'm waiting It's because I got a $10 off ticket to use and rather save money (hello CAG!) and wait till Wal-Mart gets it.

Too bad quotes & emblems don't carry over to XBL. I have my "Ramen Emblem" and me like it. I had my fill of Vs. Online. Played about 100 matches *phew* It's alot of fun since the game is so well balanced there isn't any cheap stuff going on. Think I'll start playing through Quest mode today, customizing and all that good stuff.

I wish the training mode was as in depth as VF4 was.

the training in VF4 was a nightmare... in a good way.

I do like the rebalancing. My brad is definitely better than it was in VF4 since he seems more well rounded now. Still not happy with my skill level though.

Everyone's diffrent. I can't play on a normal d-pad. It just feels unnatural. Are you used to playing fighters on an arcade stick? If not then it shouldn't bother you too much.

Yeah, that's me. How was the match? I played like 50 matches last night.

blackflag - If you want to start off with Lei Fei you can do it, but it's not gonna be easy. The other characters I mentioned work better for beginers new to the game. With Lei Fei you have to find what I call a "flow." Knowing what moves go into diffrent stances and pulling off the right move at ease. He can be a confusing character, so I wouldn't recomend him to someone new to VF, but if you're already far into training with him, and you fell somewhat comfortable then stick with him.

It was a good match. I think you swept it though, haha. My brother is a pretty good Lion player, but it was his first time online last night. He got killed the first couple games, then he started winning after he fought you. You play a good Lei Fei, I'll have to brush up. I was watching him then I noticed the name and thought, "hey, he's from CAG!"

I'll try to be on this weekend, but I got killed my first three online games, so I'll jump on once I get back into the groove. Does online feel different from playing online to anyone else? Maybe its just that human players are more aggressive.

I have yet to try VF5 beyond the demo but that's pretty much how VF4 was. I lived in Okinawa in 2003-04 and it was the hot game at the arcade and those guys there were incredible. Other games (particularly SFZ3 and Hyper SF II) I could find a wide range of competition but not in Virtua Fighter. It was as serious as the internets.

So far I haven't had much of a problem with the CPU in Quest mode yet. But I haven't gotten to the higher difficulty. I'm still fighing people in the 10 kyu - 5th Dan range. I'm sure it'll get tough after a while. I know VF4 did. The demo is only 3 matches long and yeah, it pretty hard not to win.

First, my Toys R Us doesn't even have the game, and they still have it listed coming in on Halloween. That's alright, I'm busy with work and I wouldn't have much time to play it anyways, but it get's better.

I paid 75 bucks to get the Hori Stick from Amazon.com and I got it on Monday and the box looked like sombody played soccer with it, then sat on it. The box for the stick itself was dented, and the bottom of the stick looked like it was coming apart.

I tried it out and it worked fine, then about 10 minutes into playing I get "Controller Disconnected" and it stopped working. So hopefully I get a replacement in before I can get the game, because I WILL NOT play VF online without a proper Joystick.

I know alot of his moves and combos and I can switch stances pretty good. I suck at defense and I think I just need more practice offline. He's the only character I've played since it was released so I don't want to switch quite yet.

I think my main issue is I'm just not used to fighting real people. I fuight the crap AI and they never do the moves that people were destroying me with. I just seem to get confused and frustrated and freeze up. I've been reading some stuff about how defense works in the game so I'm going to try improving that. I get thrown way to much.

Sounds like you got the basics down, then yeah, stick with him. But the AI is nothing like play a real person. The AI is so passive while most people online are very agressive so your defensive game has to be polished. Remember his "one legged" stance is good for those punchers.

As with all fighting games, I always max out the difficulty so I get my ass handed to me and I watched how they loved to bob and weeve side to side to avoid attacks and knock me down from the side. I can't wait to finally sit down with it and learn to master this.

Since I'm still waiting for my Joystick, I'm not going online with it and just playing it on Arcade mode with the difficulty to Very Hard. Hopefully I'll get my stick returned by the middle of the week so I can FINALLY try this online and see how I fair with everybody else.

It's not as good as VF4. The training or Dojo has "Free Training" & "Command Training." Plus some "Command Traning Time Attack" which sounds kinda dumb, I never did it. So yeah, none of that advanced training to learn the combos and strategy's for each character. They still have VF TV which are matches you can watch to see how a pro plays.

Confirming that my success with Vanessa probably has more to do with her as a character than my "skill," and also justifying my utter hatred of Lei Fei.

I'm no VF whiz, but from what I can tell, no, Akira really isn't great to learn with. He's definitely one of the more difficult characters, with his ultra-precise inputs for his big money moves. You sound like the beginner characters may be too simple to keep your interest, but maybe one of the intermediate characters might be a better character to learn with? Maybe Rodimus or MM can give you a more detailed suggestion.

trq is right. Akira is probably the worst character to start with. He has a very linear fighting style, and like trq said his combos require alot of practice and precision. He's ment to be played for advanced people.

I always saw Vanessa as an intermediate character. I don't see anything wrong in picking her to start of with.

For beginers I'd recomend: Jacky, Sarah, Lau or Pai. Ther're pretty strait forward with your basic P,P,P,K combos and mix ups and ment for noobs. I'd stay away from Akira, Lei Fei, Brad & Goh. They're pretty confusing to learn.

If you're gonna use Jacky you gotta get in peoples faces more. You where defending way too much. Go to the move list and pick out 5 moves or combos you like. Practice using them effectivly in a real fights. After you're comfortable with them pick 5 more.

I'm working on learning Vanessa she's pretty cool so far though the stance stuff is a little odd. Are there damage mitigation benifits from defensive stance or is it just fewer frames per move leaving you less open from attacking?

Started playing this last night and I'm loving it, started out with Jacky as I think Rodimus said he's good for beginners.

Anyone know a good place to pick up the Hori stick? Amazon have it but its not shipped by them so I'll have to pay shipping and tax.

Whoohooo! I'll have my copy from Sega in a couple of days, so I'll be able to join the ranks of learning and getting my ass whooped by fellow cag players. lol

Rodimus you pwned me hard even though there was a glimmer of light here and there.

I just can't stand playing one character so I switched from Lau to El Blaze and now I have a whopping 36% win percentage, probably like 15% with El Blaze.

Any website that can help me learn more about combos with El Blaze/Lau and general help? I am sucking so bad at this game, this is the first time in any 2d/3d fighter I've had win percentage of under 40% after playing 50+ games versus other people.

Next VF they need to work on having the quest mode reflect real life player attacks/tactics because I'm 93% with El Blaze and 94% with Lau in Quest, and have reached Master + status.

Sorry, can't help you with any websites. Everything I learned with Lei Fei I learned on my own by practice and watching mataches. If you do find a site let me know.

As for Quest mode play in some arcade that have advanced players. It's not so easy. Any CPU player below "Master" pretty much sucks.

Item pack contents

Thanks. I don't know how I feel spending real money to play dress up with my characters, but I do like the customization... At least its only 300 pts.

I got a lot better once I went more on the defensive and threw in some low jabs/low attacks after realizing I was doing nothing but mid/high combos and rushing in to attack every time. I also play the "keep away" game a lot more and I'm actually winning now. Granted when you win 2 and lose 25+ in your last twenty seven games it diminishes your record! LOL! So I'm trying to work on getting back to 40% win percentage and hopefully 50% someday. I also suggest playing higher ranked people like Rodimus just to get a feel against the experienced players.

I also fought higher then Master ranks on Quest mode but It's a joke compared to Live, mainly because they fall for so many straight combos and cheap moves.

How's everyone doing in Ranked Vs.? So far I'm 5th Dan, 280 W, 140 L.

I played a bunch of games last night and did very good. I'm extremly happy with my performance. However the only character I can use is Lei Fei. I pretty much suck with everyone else.

The online competition in great. I'm used to playing Street Fighter HF where people use cheap ass Blanka all the time, care only for rank, and quit if they're about to lose. I've only had one turd ball quit in VF5. After he left he then wrote me a nasty letter to go "fuck my mother."

I'll actually pull the cord if someone decides to constantly join my games after whipping me three rounds to none. It's only happened once, but I had to do it last night. Sorry folks, boosting on lowbies does not make you a better player.

I think I'm 80ish and 170 or so. Pretty horrible and my record with Lau was a lot better but I want to be good with El Blaze.

I don't pick on newbies, I just play whoever comes up first. I do feel bad if it's someone that I've beaten before but tough luck. It's happened to me before where some awsome guru keeps playing me and I keep losing, but I don't mind.

I don't think people that are good pick on newbies. Sometimes it just happens. In fact I prefer to play people better than me or with a higher rank. That way my character can rank up. If I play some 10th Kyo noob all it does is add to my win percentage, I'll never rank up. But there seems to more noobs than experianced players online.

So when are we going to have a tournament going?
Is that even possible with VF5's online mode?

Either way, I'm absolutley in. Get ready for my average Veteran Kage!

If we are all honest we could easily just add each other, play a few rounds privately and report the results. It's possible.

Get ready for my 30% win ration El Blaze. I'll make it invincible beyond all imagination!

million times better than DoA4... actually you can't compare them. VF5 has some of the best net code I've come across in a while.

I have to agree with Rolento, I have not seen any issues with the network communications, especially compared to DOA4. On the other hand, that could because I have been getting my ass kicked by all challangers, but I think that is a personal issue more.

Technically its true. DOA4=lag fest, VF5=insanely smooth.
However, VF5's online is REALLY bare-bones, and DOA4s is really deep. But yeah, if we're talking gameplay (which is essentially most important), VF5 certainly takes the cake.
