What gives? I want to use it to backup my files, but it wont even show on the dash. My Shuffle shows up fine, but nothing with my 4th gen iPod.

I don't think it works.
Did it ever show up?

Doing some research, it seems my iPod needs to be in FAT32...you had mentioned this to me before Dallow, how do I get it in there?

And I dont know if it's ever worked, I've only tried my shuffle before

You have to reformat the drive on your computer.

I'm not sure where on a Mac, but it should give you the choice to format with FAT32 or NTFS.

Hmmm, I see how to restore it...but reformatting I'll have to look around for.

Time to download 'podview' to back up your ipod before reformatting it. Makes it easy, if not rather slow.

Thanks for the tip ;), but I already pulled all my files off using iPod Disk about a month ago to re-organize my music. So many songs were out of order.

Anyway, I've been having this empty 20GB sitting here hoping to use it to back up my PS3.

Digging a little deeper, it seems the only way to format it into FAT32 mode is by using a PC :[ We have one left in our house, so it's not a big deal, but I wonder why my new shuffle shows up on the PS3....hmmm...

The shuffle is probably Fat32.
Makes sense for smaller sized memory as there's a slight space increase. (usable space)

The iPod was surely NTFS to avoid the 4GB file size limit.

Ah, so I'd probably have the same problem with a newer generation iPod?

So where does this all come from? The PS3 reading USB devices like a PC would?

NTFS works fine on PCs.
XP requires it.

It's just that the engineers decided the PS3 should only read FAT32.
Why is beyond me.

Blah, pretty stupid design flaw there.

Things wouldn't be so bad if I could find a media server for free that could stream content from my mac to ps3, then I would never need to hook up the iPod for media at all.

You can put the iPod into FAT32 from iTunes I believe.

When you use it as a portable harddrive, no?

That's the problem, you can ONLY format it to FAT32 from a PC. :[

See, this is the kind of stuff make me feel how stupid the PC and MAC commercials really are....

Oh, it doesn't recognize my iPod blah blah blah...
