Someone posted a link in one of the myriad PS3 price drop threads suggesting that the US Playstation 3 has already had its Emotion Engine removed. Long story short, this means that your PS3 will rely on software emulation to play PS2 games (which significantly reduces the compatibility of many PS2 games).

I'm wondering if anyone has had any incompatibility experiences with their PS2 games or not (and when you bought your system, whether it's 20/60GB, or any other useful info).

I have a launch 60GB, and have had no compatibility issues at all.

Keep in mind, not being able to play Guitar Hero doesn't count - the software works fine, and that's what I'm trying to assess here.

I think that Silent Hill 2/3 and Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance are known as being incompatible with the current software emulation, so they *may* be worth trying out.

If they did discontinue using the EE chip I think we would have heard something other than that article by now. I am hoping, beacsue I would prefer to have the chip myself.

How do you tell which version you have?

I just grabbed a 60gb from CC today.

I don't think you can tell from the outside.

Pop in a copy of Silent Hill 3 and report the results?

If nothing else, the fact that there is no official change from Sony to their BC webpage (http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus) reflecting the big changes associated with software emulation may indicate that they have not removed the EE yet.

Yeah thats cool. I just don't want it to be like my 360 where I have to check some stupid list everytime I am looking to play an older game. Its so nice to have almost complete BC like the Wii/Cube & PS3/PS2.

Or put in a copy of Final Fantasy 7.

Or put in a copy of Final Fantasy 7.No because we're talking about PS2 emulation, not PS1 which has been emulated since launch.

This article appears to confirm the 60gb has, and will continue to have(??) the EE chip, while the 80gb will not.

If this is the case, then maybe they truly are phasing out the 60GB console in favor of an 80GB model overall. Otherwise, it would make no sense to give a hardware advantage to a cheaper model system.

That's quite possibly the worst business model ever. But...that makes the PS3 60gb model very tempting.

Here's the backwards compatibilty list for European consoles. It appears that they are dedicated to adding new titles as 1.8 firmware has titles added that weren't there on the 1.6 launch units.

Yes, so far every FW update has brought along new titles that work on EE-less systems.

My launch 20 had controller issues with Taito Legends 2 (seemed like it wasn't recognizing some button hits using the Sixaxis while playing...) but I used the adapter, plugged in a dualshock and it worked fine. Game play was unaffected...

Other than that, I've had 0 issues with the EE equipped PS3 and PS2 games... I'm sure there are some, even with the EE... but I suspect it's few and far between.. a bit more in the pure software, but the pure software might actually be beneficial in the long run.

I just got my 60 GB, but I don't own many PS3 games. I have only tried recent ones like FFXII, GoW2, and Shadow of Colossus. Those all looked good to me.
