I am browsing my local craigslist, and there is a listing for a TiVo for $25:

I would be interested in this if someone could explain to me real quick: Does it need a subscription type thing? I thought you needed to pay for the TiVo service. Also, will it work if I plug it into any cable connection? For example, at my dorms at school and then later when I move into my apartment?

Thanks. Also, is that a good deal?

Tivos require a subscription. There was once a lifetime subscription you could buy for like 250 or 300 bucks and it was good for the life of that particular unit. If the guy on craigslist had that on it then you wouldn't have to pay the subscription fee. If not the subscription fee is like 13 or 15 a month. Tivos will work anywhere for the most part. You need a telephone line or a highspeed connection to get the program guide on the TV other than that I can't see any reason for them not to work. tivo.com has more specifics on the fees.

... That looks like a series 1 tivo so it probably will not work with highspeed internet and will require a telephone line. The seller doesnt list storage either. I would request more info from the seller. Does it have a lifetime sub? What is the storage capacity? Ect. I don't think its a great deal uinless its been upgraded or has a lifetime sub. Target has been clearing out the Series 2 Tivos for cheap I'd go that route before I bought a non lifetime sub non upgraded series one thats probably 5 years old.

Cool, thanks for the info! I emailed before I posted and I'll see what I get.
