Well $499 with the free controller and 5 blu ray mail in movies got me to pull the trigger. Decided since I only owned a PS2 for a short amount of time & missed a ton of great games that backwards compatability<EE chip> plus the price break was more important that waiting for a rumble version. Also who knows the rumble may only require a firmware update and a new controller down the line.
Anyways got it all set via my monoprice HDMI cable. :D Ordered up Planet Earth blu ray from the amazon. Bought God of War I, Kingdom Hearts 2 and Ratchet & Clank Up Your Arsenal over at CC. Got a bunch of demos downloading now. Not much in the PS3 lineup interests me too much now, but like everyone knows the good stuff will start hitting this Fall.
What is a better game Genji or Untold Legends? I like playing those kind of action adventure beat up games with light rpg elements. I also like platformers a ton.
Was going to buy something on blu ray to watch tonight. Damn all those flicks are near $30 in store and there wasn't anything I didn't own already on regular DVD that blew me away. I'm certainly not going to be rebuying any of my films since the PS3 seems to do such a nice job of upscaling.

Welcome! I hope you find enjoyment with the PS3 as I have recently. Add me as a friend on PSN, hopefully we'll meet up in the game!
And truthfully, I would choose Ninja Gaiden over Genji or Untold Legends. However, there is a demo for NG and Genji on the PSN, so check them out.

Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom is actually pretty fun, IF you have local friends to go through it with. It probably isn't a great single player experience, but I've never played it solo. My wife and I do have a good time with it though. :)
Haha, Yeah I'm a fanboy of gaming in general. My girlfriend and I both play games so having more systems just opens up more options for us. Plus I just bought a ridiculous 65 inch toshiba 1080p tv so we needed a way to feed it more content.
I'll send over a friend request to you. I played and finished<yeah I'm a ninja dog!> Ninja Gaiden Black on xbox so I'll be waiting until its way cheaper to pick it up again. Going to give the Genji demo a go tomorrow though.

You might pop online and look at the selection of games in the PSN (plus all the demos!). People are raving about Super Stardust right now.
I agree about the DVD's. I've been buying up cheap ones and staring in awe at the upscale goodness via my PS3 too. :)
Thanks for the input. I would be playing it though with my girl and she likes those types of games as well.

Also, Amazon has them for less than 15 I believe.
I also wonder if people used the component cable from their PS2 to satiate their HD needs while ordering an HDMI cable.
Wish I could have done that with my GC component cable and the Wii.

congrats man. Pretty good time to invest in one too. So far, game line up has been lackluster (especially if you own a 360 too), but should be picking up soon. As for the rumble thing, I can almost guarantee you will be able to upgrade to rumble controllers. Chances are, some games will provide firmware updates to implement rumble into past games. You will definitely need to invest in a new controller though, so you will kinda be stuck with a rumble-less SIXAXIS in a few months.

Once you get past the camera, I think Genji 2 is pretty good, but this is coming from someone who liked the first. It doesn't scream next gen gameplay wise, but still fun.
I'm looking to get Untold Legends DK myself too.

If you like FPS's resistance is as good as any console shooter. My co-worker who hates console shooters is half-way through it, so that says something (maybe just that there is a lack of games he prefers :-) ).
StarDust is ridiculous fun. Definitely best bang for your buck on system. People come into work talking about their new high scores... I have a brand new Rainbow 6, which I have only played 3 times, because everytime I go to play it, I end up playing StarDust for an hour.
I found that my wife (although not a hardcore gamer), got some enjoyment out of sitting on the couch watching me play Oblivion. Although you may have played this on 360. I am not an RPG fan, an have never played an Elder Scrolls game before, but I found Oblivion sucking up a lot of time...
MotorStorm is very good for what it is. Just not a ton of content or modes. I would likely wait on this one, as the (used) price will likely drop a lot when it starts being bundled with the 80GB.
I find it annoying that people say that there are only a couple good games out for the PS3, so they will wait. Yeah, more good games are better, but really how many good games do you need at one time? I generally prefer to play one game until I am done with it, unless they are two completely different modes (ie I might play Oblivion if I don't feel up to the intensity of R6V.) Now if there are currently no games that interest you, then maybe waiting is a good idea, I guess I just don't know what it is like to have no games interest me :-)
Anyway, welcome dude. I am starting to feel a lot better about the PS3's survival the last couple days, but that is a discussion for another thread.
PS - feel free to add me to friends list, even though you are a wings fan.

Get:
---Ninja Gaiden Sigma
---Super Stardust
---Tekken
---Flow
---Calling All Cars (highly underrated and hardly talked about, but it's probably the best multiplayer game on the system right now, unless you're a huge tekken fan)

The PS3 brand component cables look really sleek, however in this case, thicker cables are better.

That's fucking amazing that Sony has released this high end system with a built in Blue-Ray player only to tell people "You're not getting HD out of the box".

I suppose, but they could have followed MS's lead and given a cable that had component AND composite on the same cable.

OK, not as angry now that I've set the system up. I picked up some component cables from Target ($20) and ordered an HDMI from Monoprice (not sure which TV I'm setting it up on perminantly).
The machine is freaking HUGE and kicks out alot of heat, but I was very impressed that the on/off and eject buttons are sleek and not true buttons. I spent about 1 1/2 hours getting set up (updating, signing into the PSN, registering my PSP, etc.) and didn't get a chance to play anything though I did download some demos. I'll see if I can hop on tonight and play around with it.

I'd have to disagree with that. IMO, the majority of people purchasing a $500/600 game system are going to be using a nice TV, and since this is the 21st century, will at least have component inputs on their set. My friend bought a bargain basement Walmart set with component.
No reason they couldn't include both. Composite cables cost like 5 cents.

I got my 60 gig PS3 today from GameCrazy using gift cards I got from the 50% trade-in deal a few weeks ago. I wish I had left the money as store credit, as I wouldn't have had to pay tax. Bah to the person here who got me all paranoid that store credit would expire in 6 months!
I just got back from work, so I'll be spending a good amount of time tonight messing with the games I picked up:
Ridge Racer 7
Virtua Fighter 5 (couldn't wait for 360 version)
Enchanted Arms (garbage but worth a try for $20)
Resistance
College Hoops 2K7 (played the hell out of NBA 2K7 on 360, so this'll be a nice change of pace, and only ~$13 from CC now)
I also got Kung Fu Hustle on bluray just to try out the movie player, since I didn't want to wait for the five free movies (and I may just sell those anyway since there's nothing I want).
Besides having to pay tax when I could've gotten around it, I also wish I had ordered an HDMI cable from monoprice earlier in the week. It probably won't be here until next week, so I'm stuck using my PS2's component cables for now. I'm sure it'll still look very nice though. So the price drop, Sony's E3 conference, and the removal of the EE chip finally made me defect to the dark side too (or light side? hrm).
EDIT: I just set up my PSN account. None of my friends will be getting a PS3 anytime soon, so feel free to add EternalVendetta to your buddy list. =]

I just picked up my PS3 yesterday and ordered my HDMI cable from Newegg for about $14.
I only have Super Stardust HD which by the way is amazing.
I plan on getting Lair and Stranglehold on release and I am going to borrow Resistance from a friend.
Only problem I have with the PS3 is that the area where I place my consoles on the entertainment system is really narrow so the PS3 barely fits. I propped it up on 3 jewell cases and cut out a lot of paneling in the back but it still gets hot quick from the vent on the right side being covered. The fans seem be on all the time. Any advice would help.
Other than that I am loving my PS3 great time to invest in a PS3. I got it for around $436, plus I will get the 5 free Blu Ray Movies, and the Emotion Engine is still in the current PS3s for now.

I just pulled the trigger tonight. Kinda sucks I missed out on the Amazon and CC deal, but oh well. I figured I have the money and want one, so I just pulled up BB and did store pick up (I'll grab it tomorrow on the way home from work...but the nice thing is I have 8 days to decide if I want it or not while they hold it for me).
I was going to get a 360 but figured that the next batch of games I want will either be on the ps3 or I can play them on my PC eventually (bioshock, mass effect, etc).
I didnt pick up any bluray dvds yet but I'll probably grab a nice 37-42" before the start of the college football season to take advantage of the HD; until then I'll just sop up some SD fun.

I'm also new, I downloaded the resistance demo and it defaulted to 480p because I had set my display settings to exclude 720p (my tv produces sharper image at 1080i without exception), I was wondering if games not scaling to your preferred resolution is still a problem with new titles and if insomniac issued a patch or something that will allow resistance to do 1080i.
I think it was just a problem with a few the launch games only doing 720p. They probably learned their lesson on that one.

I just picked one up this weekend.
What got me was:
* Price drop
* wireless controllers: I had tried the Logitech controllers for the PS2 and they worked for a few months and then had constant drop-outs - tried re-synching, batteries, etc. - no luck. Anyway, I really like playing wirelessly.
* Getting rid of the EE chip - I kind of figured I'd be getting a PS3 eventually but I really didn't want to deal with incompatabilities with my PS2 games. Maybe a slim chance but it only takes 1 game and you're stuck. People will tell you, "Well, it supports all these *other* games," or they'll tell you, "Just pick up a used PS2 somewhere." Anyway, I just want it to 'work'.
* Can use as a DVD/Blu-Ray player. This just helped get rid of my DVD player. I wouldn't have otherwise upgraded to Blu-ray or HD-DVD.
* Kind of combined w/ the above: It's basically an all-in-one player (PS/PS2/PS3/DVD/Bluray). I like that.
I didn't pick up any PS3 games because there really isn't much that interests me right now. I downloaded a few demos. Motorstorm is pretty good but I feel like I get all the fun I'm going to get out of that one in the demo.
I've always liked Lemmings. I'll probably eventually buy that one.
Rub-a-Dub (or whatever it's called) was neat in that it showed off the Sixaxis controller. Seems like it's should have been a give-away, though. Interesting, but not worth buying.
Nucleus was cool. I could see getting that one.
The rest of it that I downloaded so far was kind of more of the same to me (basically, what we've all seen on PS2/XBox but slightly better graphics).
LittleBigPlanet looks really cool. That is one that I'll pick up when it comes out.
Planet Earth (I saw it on HD on Discovery) is pretty neat, visually. I really didn't get into Sigorney Weaver's narration of it. I thought it was poorly edited and she kind of talked about nothing. It is a definite show-off to people looking at your HDTV, though. I won't pick it up because I really don't think I'd sit through it again.

If you pick up the BBC release of Planet Earth, David Attenborough is the narrator. I don't think any stores carry the Weaver-narrated release (but it is coming, double dip ahoy).

I bought one 3 days ago, but can't d/l anything as I'm living at an APO,AP address. Credit card is based here.
Also, I have all the games in stock here on my 360 already, so it's really sucking hard for me.
I'll probably pick up Ninja Gaiden just for the hell of it when it hits the shelves.
Only reason I caved in and bought one was because they're discontinuing the 60g, and I can get the 5 free movies.
No controller deal for me though, as I had to buy it at my BX cause American's love screwing their military overseas customers. :(
