It looks like the last 15 minutes really won it for them with some real exclusives. The first 1/3rd was almost entirely talking about features and functionality. the middle 1/3 was covering games that didnt distinguish them from the 360. This is the list they covered Pre-MGS4:

Haze, UT3, CoD4, Assasin's Creed, Kane & Lynch, RE5, Burnout Paradise, Madden 08, Harry Potter, The Simpons, GH3, MoH: Airborne, Rock Band.

They did well by not letting the release date limit what they showed, and could show a lot more.

Pop Quiz: How many RPGs did they show?

I give it a B- overall, with MS and Nintendo both getting C+

I'm sorry but Sony killed Microsoft when it comes to new IP announcements. The "me too" section of the PS3 conference had me doubting but the last third was a Sony knockout.

Just drop the 60 Gig to $399, Sony, and we have a deal. ;)

Eh, it was a solid effort that was way too bogged down in the first two thirds, but I'll agree the last 1/3 made up for it. If I were to use your grading system, Sony gets a B-, Nintendo gets a C+ and M$ gets a solid B.

All three were decent, but not great. This is okay for M$, because they're still chugging aloug, leader of the pack, and Nintendo could have had no presence at E3 at all and still come out #1 by years end. Sony, however needed to blow people's minds with brand-new franchises and surprise announcements and opted instead, to go the M$ route.

Yep thats all I asked for when it comes to the PS3...give me games to match the money i'm paying. Now I have "exclusives" to buy a ps3 for. Plus, the price drop makes used systems $449 so in the next month I will own one. WII on the other hand can kiss my ass untill Metroid comes out.......

I'm more of a 360 fan but I still have to give Sony the nod. They showed the exciting things that won't release until 08 at the earliest.

Although MS did have more on stage demos.

Sony B+ - drop the lame jokes and uncomfortable chewbacca apearance and this would have gotten an A.
Microsoft B - Trim some of the boring powerpoint and add a trailer montage of 08/09 games. You have to keep your fanbase excited about the future.
Nintendo C- - Use E3 to talk to the core gamers, Wiifit would not have been so bad if you had shown the new duck hunt, animal crossing or pikman that we all know you're working on. And make some more DS games damnit!

I liked how Sony had a lot of games, but I was sort of bored it places, like with the home parts.
Most of the games I want on PS3 are also coming out on the 360, and the exclusives I do want (Final Fantasy VS XIII, Lair, LA Noir and Heavy Rain) they didn't show.

Echochrome and especially Infamous looked hot. I'm terrible at first/third person shooters so I can't say I'm all that excited about Killzone or UT3. I wonder if Square-Enix has something big cooked up for TGS - strange that their only presence at E3 is portable games. Neither Microsoft nor Sony even showed a clip of The Last Remnant, for example.

FriskyTanuki
07-11-2007, 05:20 PM
Hmm, neither MS nor Sony mentioned GHIII. Either way, Sony had the best, with Nintendo and MS behind them.

Sony: B+
Nintendo: C+
Microsoft: C

Sony kept a good pace going through the show while showing games or making announcements (glad they got rid of their standard powerpoint presentations), for the most part, while MS had tons of awkward moments, while Nintendo was all about bragging about their numbers and youtube videos.

I agree with this. While Sony had more new game announcements, MS's conference demonstrated why it's good to have a 360 now, though I would've liked to hear more about possible '08 releases. Sony's conference I thought showed that there will be compelling reasons to pick up the console in the future. They have some great 1st party delevopers, and what they're working on looks promising.

It's weird that they didn't really show off LA Noire, Lair, Heavy Rain, or Final Fantasy stuff. Especially Lair considering it's a soon to be released exclusive that at least looks pretty compelling.

Maybe the companies are holding stuff back for TGS and X07?

It wasn't that spectacular, and as I alluded to earlier, M$ showcased the best lineup, that was also coming sooner than Sony's. Not to mention that shit with home and GT5 AND the guy crashing through the glass made the shit M$ did in their conference seem awesome by comparison.

Now that all the keynotes are done, we can sit back and watch some awesome acts of cognitive dissonance as people try to explain how MS or Nintendo had the best performance.

In the meantime, all the Xbox kids don't really need to try to lie to themselves that MS' keynote held its own against Sony's. They ought to be playing those demos for Ace Combat 6 and Blue Dragon. The demo area is one place where Sony is *sorely* lacking.

It'd be nice if people could just admit that every conference was lacking and not nitpick over which one "won" by fractions of imaginary points. But that won't happen. But it was Sony, by the way.

It is a black and white game, in which you walk around the odd geometry of M. C. Escher.

The best thing is, that I've just told you what it was, but you can't process it. You have to see it for yourself. Now, the graphics can probably run on a Wii, or just one GameCube (without the duct tape), but the idea is where it's at. I want to see the code for it. If there is one thing I do not understand is the gameplay mechanic in analysis of the illusions, which basically comprise 100% of the gameplay. I have a degree in math, and I don't understand how it is done. It fucking ROTATES.

It'd be nice if people could just admit that every conference was lacking and not nitpick over which one "won" by fractions of imaginary points. But that won't happen. But it was Sony, by the way.
I agree, all conferences had their good points (Mass Effect looks awesome, Mario Kart Wii is going to be cool along with the Zapper for $19.99, and I'm actually looking forward to home and REALLY liked what I saw of Infamous). These conferences didn't bring out any huge surprises, but all-in-all they were a good watch.

I dunno. it's pretty much all politics with E3 analysis. The fact remains that whatever system you like is whatever system you like and there are enough games to justify liking any game system. Anything more than that is capitalistic, competitive thinking of wanting the system you bought to "win" some imaginary war. This illusion is squashed by the fact that there is enough room for all 3 consoles to survive and grow on the market.

how about the evidence that this has almost always been the case and that no company is even close to red lining thanks to the increase of popularity in gaming over the past few years?

growth as in new products, more games, more people buying games.

As much as I'm pissed at Sony for not having a pie chart at their presentation (those bastards betrayed me for the last time!!!), the numbers don't pertain to my perspective of gaming.

For one thing, it's an abstract market and I'm not into business, so the analysis is only of passing interest. so MS lost billions, but nobody looked at that and thought "wow, they're going to close up their xbox division." People knew they had a long term plan, which, no doubt, Sony and Nintendo have. I don't care about the plans and the ebbs and flows because they're all healthy and strongly supported on the market in general. All 3 are household names with strong staying power. As long as they do what they've been doing they're fine because that's what people like. In a sense, they work together to keep the market to themselves, while stealing little parts here and there. The days of a system dying completely, like the dreamcast, are over thanks to mainstream gaming.

what I'm saying is, if the wii sells like the PS2 this gen, with MS in second, and Sony is last financially, it wouldn't matter because my backlog is going to be huge regardless with games from all 3 systems and all 3 corps will have new systems next time around.

It is 33 percent lighter and 19 percent slimmer than the current version, making the all-in-one mobile entertainment system even more convenient to carry around at less than 1/2-pound in weight and less than 3/4-inch in thickness. The new PSP system will also have a thinner, more efficient battery, 64MB of system memory and video-out capabilities allowing consumers to enjoy their games at 480 x 272 resolution and movies at full standard-definition resolution on any progressive scan TV.

Interesting.

PSP Slim video. (not from E3!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hn_ku9nmA8U

Things of note:

-Face buttons are visibly raised and easier to hit.
-Memory Card slot has changed somewhat.
-Wifi switch is now on top, presumably the wifi unit is behind the screen now. Helpful since the old unit would heat up your hands after heavy use!
-Battery is now 1200maH, a 1000 less than the older unit. Sony are promising better battery life?
-PSP can now accept power charge directly through the USB port.
-Battery cover features a new mechanism to open it.
-Infrared port removed.
-Hold switch is on the left side, seperated from the power switch

Hrrm, seems odd that you need progressive scan to play games via the video out on the new PSPs, since it seems like the res would be doable (maybe a little flickery) on standard-def TVs. :/

That said, it SEEMS promising although I'm not completely thrilled by the redesign.

Nope, just in the bundles.

From the Sony PR:

The first newly designed PSP that will be released in North America is the limited-edition Daxter PSP Entertainment Pack, which will be available on September 10 and provide users with everything they need to enjoy the ultimate in portable entertainment, right out of the box. This package will feature a PSP in “Ice Silver” along with the award-winning, action-packed game, Daxter; the hit TV comedy from 20th Century Fox, “Family Guy - The Freakin’ Sweet Collection” on UMD; and a 1GB Memory Stick PRO Duo™, for storing photos, music, video clips and more.

The limited-release Star Wars Battlefront PSP Entertainment Pack, available on October 9, will allow owners to experience their favorite Star Wars battles any way – and anywhere – they want with a special “Ceramic White” PSP featuring a silk-screened image of Darth Vader on the back of the unit. Also included is Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron, the next chapter of the best-selling Star Wars Battlefront series from LucasArts. Set during the Original Trilogy era, the game is the previously untold story of a ragtag ensemble of battle-hardened rogues and scoundrels assembled by Han Solo. Now for the first time ever in Star Wars Battlefront, you can customize your character, select your weapons, choose your abilities and create a different experience every time you play.A stand-alone version of Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron will also be available on October 9.

As I've stated before it was nothing more than the initial launch fanaticism fueled by idiotic consumers that led to extremely bad press... (well I guess as some dumb Sony exec quotes contributed). Same thing happened at 360 launch and the first year... but after the ps3 launch suddenly the whole wii360 movement came about proclaiming the downfall for the ps3? It was the dumbest shit i'd ever seen with fanboys and stupid console loyalties. Now I see the same people coming around saying "oh look ps3 aint so bad anymore! wooo!" go fuck yourselves tards.

Wait, so according to ZogLog all this great stuff was announced that makes the PS3 awesome now and THIS is the game you retort with that makes the system worth $500? I'll admit, I haven't looked at a single thing yet that Sony announced (just saw some PSP slim stuff - looks interesting but I don't play my current PSP any more so I don't see the need for a new one). I'm certainly open to a bunch of stunning announcements of PS3 games coming this Fall - but if your retort as to why the PS3 is worth $500 is Ninja Gaiden, well, then, no thanks . Hell, even if I got one (which I am considering) I wouldn't buy that game, just as I'm not buying Halo for the 360.

But I sympathize ZogLog - I made a similar post on the Nintendo thread. All those first party games coming out this year FOR SURE plus Mario Kart early 2008 should have shut up the "wii is a gimmick/only for soccer moms and grampas" crowd (which I noticed consists mostly of Sony fanboys) but it didn't...

Seriously ;).

I see this post saying anyone who doubted the PS3 has been put in their place, hands down. But how? I have to admit, I dismissed it (at least in the short term - but mostly because it didn't work in HD with my Sony HDTV ;)). But the OP of this thread doesn't have some sort of comprehensive "awesome" list (in contrast to Ikohn4ever's E3 Wii games list). What is it that is new that is so great? I loved the PS2 for it's games like Katamari, JRPGs, Jak-type platformers, and yes, free online play (didn't see the point of paying for it and only sort of do now that I have a 360). Is there anything mind-blowing that is new in those genres? I'm honestly curious.

As expected....

I wouldn't call the price drop and free blue-ray DVDS the end for microsoft and Wii. I expect the 360 to still outsell the PS3 by a 1.8:1 ratio instead of 2.0+:1. The Wii is going to sell like shit on a stick till someone decides to either copy them or release their new consoles. Trust me on that one.

I like my 360 but I don't think it is the be-all end-all gaming experience (nor do I think the Wii is that), so I'm open to Sony coming on strong here.

You're going to have to tell us what kind of games you enjoy, because any list would be YMMV without that kind of info. For me and probably many others MGS4 was the absolute best thing of the show, especially with Kojima there to present the trailer himself.

You should really just spend the time to watch it and make notes of what was interesting, along with checking out stuff that wasn't shown, as there's still more stuff outside of what was at the show.

The nicest part about the presentation was that they were quick to not stay on one game or feature for too long, except for maybe the PSP designs, which deserves the attention for that kind of an announcement.

But see, I don't care about the "warz" either. I just tend towards defending the Wii a bit when everyone says it is a waggle-enhanced gimmick (and many people posted after launch that they were sure they'd be able to get one on the bargain bin for $100 soon when everyone got tired of it). Other than that, I'm open to both the 360 (being new to it) and the PS3 (being that I loved the PS2 and it's library). I don't think I made any "side swipe" comments. I was simply asking how someone (previously, at this point I can't even remember who) said that NOW anyone who doubted the PS3 was put in their place. I wanted to know what Sony did today to accomplish that. That is all. It doesn't sound like maybe that really happened? I was hoping some helpful CAG's would point me towards what it was. I don't have time (having wasted all last evening getting MS points for free ;)) and thus needing to make up 2 days of work tonight to watch the whole thing.

But if someone can summarize what was shown today that wasn't known last week I'd appreciate it. I just assumed from that post that it was common knowledge here that Sony dominated the other two and wanted to know why.

Frisky - didn't see your post while I composed - thanks, that is more of what I was expecting to hear! And I think I did post exactly what I liked about the PS2 and would be looking for from the PS3 (in a previous post) - quirky Katamari-like games, JRPGs, Jak-type platformers - stuff like that. I don't have time to watch it this week, unfortunately (and I'm not watching the Nintendo one either). I guess I'll just check out the IGN summaries and such.

While Sony's E3 conference didn't floor me like it did many of you, it did finally rekindle my interest in the system. The 360 may be the machine to own right now, but next year it'll be hard to say. The first two-thirds of the show didn't do anything to interest me, but I took notice when they began showing off the exclusive titles, a large number of which looked great.

KillZone 2 shocked me. I was very skeptical of the game, and never would've thought it'd be nearly on par (and in some areas, surpassing) Gears of War. It probably won't be that far into next year when I finally buckle and make the purchase.

I don't have time (having wasted all last evening getting MS points for free ;)) and thus needing to make up 2 days of work tonight to watch the whole thing.

here's your straight answer-- first, if you want lists and proof, go check any of the 100s of lists floating around the internet right now.

as for the presentation, it was all games the whole time and it still didn't cover everything coming out for the PS3. What were the two big criticisms of the system before? No games, too expensive. Well, now it's cheaper and there are a bunch of great games on the way. It's officially a competitor...sure, not a mind-blowing revelation, but ideally, it would at least clear out a few of the trolls in this forum. There just seemed to be a lot less fluff in their presentation this year. it was actually tied together by Home...it wasn't just masturbatory montage after masturbatory montage. it was pretty much one trailer after another, with some breaks to discuss Home features, the PSP slim, chewbacca, etc.

Was there any indication that PS3 iterations of Twisted Metal or Wipeout are currently in the works?

yeah, Wipeout HD. It was going so fast the video streams couldn't keep up :)

They certainly did well, but there are some things to keep in mind:

a) Both MS and Nintendo focused mainly on what was coming this year, and even then for some reason didnt touch the ACTUAL list of games they had that were coming out this year (in the case of Nintendo). Sony seemed much more open to actually talking about what they had in the works, and didnt limit it to a release date.

b) Both MS and Nintendo wasted 1/3 of their show talking about numbers, something that Sony did not do (for some mysterious reason!).

It was more a case of their competitors doing horrible rather than them doing exceptional. They just did what they were supposed to do.

No games really isnt the proper criticism. The criticism is subtracting the 360 library and then justifying the price difference.

I dont think $500 quite magicks away the complaint about price either.

Sounds like a plan. The live blogs are good for the quick summary, but the video will help best, along with previews. The conference isn't that long, maybe 90 minutes total, so with the pace they keep throughout the show, it's not as bad as Nintendo's or Microsoft's conferences.

I asked about your taste because some of your semi-interests didn't seem to lineup with what I recalled that you were interested in before, though nothing's wrong with branching out a little. ;) :D

Thank you for that. OK, I'll watch it eventually (just not till this weekend probably - no big deal, 'tis not like I was gonna buy one this week anyway ;)). I definitely want to see the Home features in motion. But one thing... Chewbacca??

You mean stuff like Lair, Home, and Folklore? Yeah, see, that's the thing - I'm TRYING to like the PS3 so I'm reaching for games (and features) I might like that don't fall into my typical interests. Maybe throw Drake's Fortune and HSG5 in that category too. You nailed it - sort of makes it out like the opposite of what Apossum thought at first ;).

But I guess what didn't happen was any FF XIII info, or any other big new project from Squeenix, or a major RPG from the likes of Namco or Konami. I guess that would be one "blow me away" thing I was looking for and it doesn't sound like there was anything like that.

Chewie came out to show off the Vader PSP.

I do think that Sony's more or less positioning the PSN as the center of those quirky, strange games you want to see, like echochrome and Everyday Shooter, and hopefully once the bigger studios finish up their big projects, they'll make some interesting stuff, too.

Littlebigplanet definitely seems like something you'd like, especially with the free demo in the fall that's essentially the whole shebang right there. Infamous could be something to check out, which is a superhero sandbox game from the developers of Sly Cooper.

Yeah, just saw that in the PSP forum. Hell - even though I don't play the PSP much I want to get that bundle! They may have me sold on that, in any case...

Not to mention that everything shone at the M$ conference (aside from RE5) is coming this THIS year, while I'm sure everything Sony showed (aside from maybe one of them) are all coming next year or even later.

All I care about is the next coming months, M$ showed that their system is where I'm going to most of my gaming from.

Also DR. Mario Kart, you forgot Mass Effect for the 360.

Are you stupid, retarded, or both? UT3, Haze, Warhawk, GT Prologue, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Lair(but they didn't show it), Folklore, GTA4, Singstar, COD4, Assassin's Creed, Kane & Lynch, Socom, Rock Band, Guitar Hero 3, are all coming out on the PS3 this year. Now what was the 1 game you're talking about again?

BTW Frisky, Sony did show Guitar Hero 3 and so did Nintendo, Microsoft didn't probably because they showed Rock Band.

I'd like to know WHY MS didn't show Haze nor UT3, yet they showed a trailer of RE5.

I give Sony a B+, Nintendo a C+, and Microsoft a C-.

Rock Band is in the PSN store as part of a video montage. (and RE5)
Looks interesting.

They didn't show Haze or UT3 because both are timed exclusives for PS3.

Request to ban DMK from the PS3 forums plz
(and no, it's not because of things I don't want to hear...it's because you're a broken record and you're looking for any angle to minimize the fact that the PS3 is now a competitor...and making this opinion so public it hurts.)

I got a question for you guys, Did they announce UT3 as an exclusive for the console? PC aside?

that seems really strange since my last OXM had UT3 as the cover story lol...

He said exclusive this YEAR.

Emphasis on year ;)

I was always going to get it on the PS3 anyway (so it didn't interfere with my Halo time) so no biggie for me.

Hmmm does that include PC? That would seem very very strange if they released UT on consoles before PC...

Doubt it, I don't think PC usually gets thrown into these exclusive claims does it?

I'm interested to see how mods work though.
