Do PS2 or PS1 Guncons work on the PS3?

Do PS2 or PS1 Guncons work on the PS3?PS1 no. PS2, they should, but only if you use composite cables on a non-HDTV and/or LCD.

I didn't see this answered, and I'm in a similar situation.
I just bought a PS3 at Circuit City last week, but the disc drive is faulty and won't take in any discs (blue access light flashes, drive makes a buzzing/clicking sound). There's nothing on my system that's irreplaceable, but I don't want to have to start over and make a new PSN ID. Will I be able to keep my current ID and use it on my new system? It seems likely, but a little reassurance would be nice.Yes, all the PSN ID is, is a username and PW.
Just make a system ID on your new system, then try to connect online with your original PSN ID and you're set.

just put the cd and then go to the music tab and press triangle and then go to import cd and then wait. You can choose from AAC,Mp3,Atrac but that's n the music settings.
Nice. I didn't know that about the ripping. Now I really do need to upgrade the HDD. I hope the 250GB ones go down in price soon...I can probably do 160 for under or around $100 right now.

Hey I want to get a 100-200gb HDD for use with my PS3. Which one would work? And were could I find it cheap? Dont want to spend much.
Any 2.5" SATA notebook HDD would work. I was checking newegg and some other sites and 250 GBs will run about $190-200.
Right now, the sweet spot for cheaper drives are the 160GBs which run under $99, typically.
I don't know if I should wait a few more months for 250GBs to come down or just jump into a 160GB now. I'm leaning towards waiting.

I have a question regarding game updates. I recently got motorstorm and resistance, and recalled that there were updates to those games that added some new stuff.
What do I have to do to get those updates? Are they automatic or do I have to go to the PSN to update? Or, do I simply need to try and play online?

Just got my PS3 a couple of weeks ago. Absolutely love it. I have had it a couple of weeks and have yet to even play one game on it. And yes, I have Resistance Fall of Man waiting in the wings to play.
So anyhoo, I have been looking into a bigger Hard Drive for my PS3. I have found around my area that I can go 120 GB for about 100 bucks or 160 for about 140 dollars. While both seem to be very easy to do I have also seen internet posts of people using a Western Digital USB external HD for around 100 bucks. The drive is about 300 GB and is already formatted in 32fat, which the PS3 reads.
My question is...
Is it better for me to change out the internal PS3 hard drive to 120GB or 160GB or.....
Buy the Western Digital USB external drive ?
I am in no hurry to do either but I naturally want to do what works best.

Looks like it's a combination of PSN store and just trying to go online with a game.
For Motorstorm I had alread downloaded the time attack update from the PSN store. However, it wasn't listed in the game menu. Instead, I had to take the game online, have it do an automatic update of Motorstorm, then after my PS3 rebooted with the patch it finally recognized the time attack more.
I haven't taken Resistance online yet, but I figure I could use the patch.
My question is...
Is it better for me to change out the internal PS3 hard drive to 120GB or 160GB or.....

Depends on what you want to do really. Internal might be a bit faster like others mentioned, and it'll allow you to add more PSN titles to your PS3 as I don't think you can install things on an external drive (?).
But I personally have all my movies on an external drive. When I want to watch them I plug it into the PS3 and move what I want to watch over to the PS3 and delete it when I'm done. I can play directly off the exteranal HD but it responds a little slowly (after I push fast forward it takes it a second or two longer to start that up compaired to it beind directly on the HD).
Also another hassle is having to plug in the external drive, but then again I only need to when I want to access the files on it. The most used stuff stays on my PS3 all the time.

Yeh, you can recharge it via any USB connection. You can even play games with it on your computer with the right drivers while it is connected via the USB cable.
I always turn my controller off when I need to leave the system alone for a bit or when I'm watching a movie and won't been needing to control anything.

For some reason my PS3 is taking forever to download demos; I'm at fourteen percent on Heavenly Sword after about three hours. The download speed stays the same whether it's wireless or wired into my router, and I don't suspect it's a problem with my router or modem since the download times on my 360 are generally very quick.
Are there any ways to fix this within the PS3? Any settings to tinker with that will garner results?

After how long? I've left the controller alone for over an hour a few times and nothing happens. I'd like to see an option in the settings to set after how long of idle time that I'd like it to turn off my controller, similar to how you can do that to start folding.

If you are a PSP owner, it's been that way for a while as well for the PSP (select should work as well, but I have yet to try it out on PS3). ie, if you know your insides and outs of the PSP, you'll know your PS3.

I thought I read that was a recent fix they added.
I'm also under the impression that you can create specific virtual memory cards for organization, but I don't know if you can transfer freely between the virtual memory cards once they're created. Hopefully someone can answer you with full certainty. I'll be picking one up later today as well.

Also anyway to go into an edit menu and put certain saves on certain virtual memory cards. like put all my final fantasy saves in one card? The virtual memory card does not delete your old saves at all, on the memory card. You can copy your files from the memory card to PS3, and from the PS3 back to the memory card (since Firmware 1.8).
I believe you can copy individual saves over now. Just don't ask to copy the entire card or something. You can either do that or just create what I call a "dummy" virtual memory card where I copy all saves more. Then, I create more virtual memory cards moving the saves over to other virtual memory cards.

I'm going to be ordering my PS3 in about a week, and I have 2 questions I feel I should ask before I order.
#1: Does any HDMI male/male cable work with the PS3? Cable in question:
http://$$$$$$$$$$$$/32bvqt [link hopefully fixed]
FYI, I know I can get a $4 cable off of monoprice, but when placing my order I want everything to come at the same time. I am horrendously impatient.
#2: Will my TV down-convert all games that don't support 1080i into a 480p signal? Because that would blow. My TV:

Monoprice ships out of Ontario, California, so I'd say it'd get there two to three business days at the latest. Depending on when you're getting your PS3, just order it now and it should all get there at the same time.

1. Press (don't hold) the PS button. If you're on the XMB, an icon will appear on the top right of the screen while in-game, the status of the controller (player, battery remaining) will be on the bottom left.
2. I think you can only do one or the other, but I may be mistaken.

I've got a couple of questions regarding the PS3 that I hope I can get answered here.
1.) I'm considering importing a Japanese PS3 (more specifically, the Minna No Golf 5 bundle from Play-Asia) and was wondering how easy it would be to set up a US PSN account on a Japanese PS3, considering there's instructions all over the net on how to setup a JPN PSN account.
2.) Is there a way to default PS3 games to either Japanese w/English Subtitles or a full English Track on a Japanese PS3? And if so, how is it accomplished?
edit: the first post (which has been subsequently quoted below) did not have the second question. And yes, I did know that games like Minna No Golf can be imported and played on a US PS3, I'm considering the import PS3 because of the high possibility of importing and playing Japanese PS2 titles such as Arcana Heart.

Very easy. You can just set the system to english... and there you go.
Also, you do know the PS3 can play imported PS3 games right? So you could just by Minna No Golf 5 and play it on a US PS3, if you wanted.

Yeah, makes senses. So you can change the system language with no problem. The only reason there are guides to making PSN accounts in Japan is to help people who can't read it. Since you are writing in english, I'm going to guess you'll have no problem setting up the account because you can understand it.
Now for the second NEW question... Changing the system menu to english It won't affect the in-game languages of the imported items in any way. All you can do is hope they have language settings you can change with in the game. Some games do come with english subtitles/voices but you are going to need to do some research on which ones do or not. Or start tracking down translated manuals and guides online to help you through the menus.

Not that I know of. Some times... Doesn't play-asia show which titles have what languages in them? You are really going to have to play detective to figure it out at this point because I don't know of such a list.

I don't have any experiance with this. Though I don't think there is a way to do it directly (one hard drive to another) that I know of. BUT you can backup your HD to an external memory device.

Not that I know of. Some times... Doesn't play-asia show which titles have what languages in them? You are really going to have to play detective to figure it out at this point because I don't know of such a list.
Yeah, I didn't notice that with Minna No Golf 5, but I pull up Resistance and it shows the English language option. I'll keep an eye on this, thanks a bunch! :D

I remember hearing that Insomniac did all of their localization at once, so the version of the game released in Japan, North America, and Europe were the exact same game. I believe that's a rarity amongst PS3 games, though it would be a good idea.

I imagine that electricity is what's powering that little light. At the same time, since I got mine (maybe 6 weeks ago), it's been on standby the whole time and I certainly haven't seen a skyrocketing power bill.

An interesting article on console power consumption:
http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-356-1.htm
But to answer your question, it uses about 2 watts while in standby mode.
It would have been interesting if they also showed power consumption during Folding@Home.

Your PS3 saves? What you mentioned might work, I THINK you can copy them to a USB storage device, then upload to another computer HD if needed.

I can't speak for PS3 saves, as I haven't bought any PS3 games yet. However, I was able to transfer a PS2 save over to my SD card no problem. Just hit Triangle, select Copy, then the destination. I imagine if you have a similar storage device hooked up (thumbdrive, portable HD) it should show up in the same way.

I'm on the verge of buying a PS3 so I've got a couple q's:
1) Does the system come with a controller? (Sounds like a stupid question but don't laugh  )
2) What's your opinion on how it looks on a SDTV?
3) Controller adapters won't allow you to use a DualShock for PS3 games, right? Also, will PS2 headsets work with PS3 games?
I think that's all I got for now.
Thanks guys, I'm dying over here trying to make this decision :bomb:

1. Yes, of course.
2. It looks fine, but you will get a better, more clear picture with an HDTV.
3. Correct on both accounts. You'll need sixaxis functionality for some games, so the Dual Shock won't cut it at times. Many headsets will work, even that old SOCOM headset gets mentioned when developers talk about headsets.

Right now, the Sony is taking a different stance when the other companies on many features. Most of which require the game developers to allow certain features (custom music/upscaling/etc). So if the game doesn't come enabled to access the HD's music then you are stuck listening to the game's score. Now that isn't to say the PS3 can't do it, it is just that Sony has left it up to the developers once again.
Though there are screens and rumors that Sony might have shifted their stance on this and there could be some kind of accessing of music via the XMB or PS button in the future but nothing is confirmed.
Right now the answer is "only if the game supports it".

I have a 360 and I really love that feature.PS3 will get it, but in-game XMB is the bigger priority. Unfortunately, Gran Turismo 5 will almost certainly disagree with you.
Then again, I have a long history of not liking racing game soundtracks going all the way back to turning off the music in Gran Turismo and turning on the stereo in my room.
Forza 2 is the latest game to get the silent treatment. I stick to racing with Death from Above 1979 songs and/or the first Audioslave album.

Great thread, OP. Anyway, I haven't seen this posted so I'll ask. In what state should you leave your virtual memory cards when you turn off your PS3? What I mean is, there is an option to "put" the virtual card into a slot (1 or 2) or to "release" it. I ask this because at first I used to leave the card in slot 1 all the time. Then, after one of the updates (don't remember which one but it was a while ago), all of my PS2 saves were deleted! After that I would always release the card before turning off the PS3 and I periodically backup my saves to an SD card. I haven't had a problem since I started doing this. Is there something to this or am I being paranoid? I lost a few RPG clear data saves so I was really pissed!
Also, this was asked by someone else but it was unanswered. Is it normal for the sixaxis to get disconnected everytime you start a PS2 game? This doesn't happen any other time (playing PS1 games, PS3 games, DVDs, Blu-Ray discs are all fine).

-Unplug the HDMI cables, and rehook whatever you were previously using (component, composite, etc.)
-Turn on the PS3, and it should work like normal.
-Go into Settings=>Display Settings=>Video Output Settings
-Replug the HDMI
-Select HDMI from the connections list, and follow the wizard.
I'm not exactly sure how it goes from here, but it should be pretty self-explanatory.

My RPTV is about 3 years old and does not have an HDMI input (it uses a DVI). Can I connect my PS3 to the TV via a DVI/HDMI cable? In addition, will it function the same as a straight HDMI connection (upscaling PS2 games and DVDs?)

I'm having a very odd problem.
For a while, I was using HDMI on my system with my HDTV. Then, I had the system and TV unplugged for a while as I had to use the power strip somewhere else.
Now that I've plugged everything back in, my PS3 and HDTV no longer work together via HDMI. I can use the old fashioned composite cables and it works fine, but if I try to run HDMI it's nothing but a blue screen.
I've got a Vizio HDTV and I hope that's not the problem.
I'm running the latest firmware. I've even tried the hold down the power button on startup function to reset the displays.
I've tried this with just the HDMI plugged in, then both the HDMI and composite cable. When I reset with both plugged in, the PS3 tells me (via the composite display) that it detects an HDMI display available and asks me if I want to use it. If I hit yes and switch to the HDMI input on my HDTV it just gives me the blue "no signal" screen.
When I boot up via HDMI only, I hear any sound either. Not sure what could be causing this, I have no way of testing if it's the TV itself.
I'm using a monoprice cable.
EDIT: Nevermind, fixed the problem. What worked was Restoring my system to default settings. I think the problem was in the HDMI handshake not being updated since I had completely powered down both the PS3 and HDTV. Then, when I fired them up again, one or the other device was still using an old HDMI handshake, whereas the other one had lost it and was waiting for a new connection. Restoring all settings to default probably reset the handshake code on the PS3, prompting it to request a new one with the HDTV. Not sure if there's a way to do this other than restoring everything to default though

Offhand I would say that since you have an older TV, it would be better to go analog component as that offers a more robust signal than DVI. This is without knowing what kind of HD specs your TV has or what it can handle. You won't get the full benefit of the PS3, graphics-wise, but I suspect you'll have less display difficulites out of the box.
I'd save HDMI for newer TVs that better support it.

Yellow Dog is the only "officially" supported Linux distro, but others like Fedora, Gentoo, and Ubuntu work as well. I don't plan on installing Linux on my PS3, so unfortunately I couldn't tell you which one is "better". I'd say if you don't have a specific OS requirement or app in mind, Yellow Dog is as good as any and you'll probably find more community support for it.
Sorry for double posting but I have another question that I haven't seen answered anywhere. Does anyone know of any sites in English with Japanese PS3 game reviews?
I don't believe there's any single repository for Import PS3 reviews in English. I'm afraid you'll have to search individual game titles if you don't want to throw Famitsu or some of the other Japanese mags into machine translators.
Does it matter if it is vertical or horizontal? Which gives better ventilation?
Since the PS3 was intentionally designed to be used both vertically and horizontally, no it does not matter which way you use it. The main thing is to keep the unit in a well-ventillated area and to keep it stabilized while the disc is loaded (it's always helpful not to jostle electronics with moving parts).

Is there a way to add the exact amount of a PSN game to your wallet, or do you always have to do the "add funds" option? For example, I wanted to buy Mortal Kombat II, is there a way to charge just the $4.99 to my card, or do I have to add $5 in funds and have that 1 cent left over? Thanks.

If you just keep going through the checkout process, without enough funds in your wallet, when it gets to the end and you don't have the funds, it will offer you the chance to just add the exact amount. I didn't know about this until CheapyD mentioned it on a CAGCast.
1 point for SONY! Wish all the companies did this, even though it's sort of a hidden trick.

the way that works is that it'll be the money you need as long as it's over $5. If you have a $2.99 purchase and no money, you will have to pay $5. If you have lets say $1.01 you will still have to put $5 since that's the minimum you can pull out from your card.

Ah, so I guess that was my problem, as I was only trying to download Mortal Kombat II, which is not over $5. I had gone into my account settings and checked to automatically add funds if I didn't have enough, but I guess MK2 not being over $5 was the reason. I won't be on my PS3 until after the weekend, so I'll have to see if it works to (hopefully, if I have the money) download the Tekken 5 online bundle. Thanks.

I've heard people say it upscales better then their Oppo upscaling DVD players. I can contest to that as yes it really is a great DVD upconverter. For those movies that are HD DVD only that I really need now I have confidence in the PS3 to upscale the DVD version.

I'm still having trouble with connecting to the internet, which I never had a problem with when using my PS2 and XBox at my last residence. I have a Comcast modem with a Linksys Wireless-B router. It does recognize the connection, but it says it's only at 15% and won't let me complete the setup process. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here. My PS2 won't connect either and I've tried the wired and wireless options for connecting to my PS3.

IMO it's works pretty damn good at upconverting. Of course Blu-ray is awesome. I tried just a regular DVD on my old Sony tube tv and it looked good on that too.

How about interface and stuff though? For instance the PS2 could only fast forward verrrry slowly unless you bought the remote. There were also skips in the video, and the video was choppy, where a regular DVD player would not do so. None of these problems?

Well, I've used the fast forwarding feature with just a controller. I've never tried to go beyond 10x, so I don't know if it gets /FASTER/ than that. However 10x is quite fast, condensing an hour long movie down to six minutes.
All other DVD features seem to work just fine from the controller. The only issue is remembering which button does what.

When it flashes every few seconds it means that it is on. When it is solid blue it means it is ready to be connected to the PS3.
As for getting the voices to come out of the headset and not your tv, go into your PS3's settings, looking for accessory setting, then audio device settings. change output setting to the Jabra.

Does anybody have any suggestions for online play on the PS3. I just got it about two weeks ago, and I have NBA 07. About 75% of the time it won't even connect to the other opponent. The other 25 % i get about two minutes into the game and it disconnects. But I have no problem signing into the servers of the game or asking for challenges. And I've had no problem with PSN. I have Comcast Cable Internet and I have it running through a NetGear Router, wired because I thought it would help. The wireless is just as bad.

With the 1.90 update you can scroll through all the different settings to see what looks best. Fast Forwarding goes at 1.5x (funny because you still hear audio, so its almost like chipmunks), 10x, 30x & 120x. The 120x is a big help when trying to see if theyre hiding anything after the credits.
From what ive read, as long as the video is uncompressed (ie you didnt put 8.5gb of video on a 4.7gb disc) it should look great. I got tired of waiting for Blockbuster to get Disturbia BR in, so i rented the regular version and it looked really damn good for SD. It seems like no matter what i throw at it, it comes out looking good, even older stuff like Beavis & Butthead looks clear and bright as day. For shows/movies made in 4:3, there will be some stretching, but you can always switch it back to 4:3 mode (i sit and watch tv on my zune's 3 inch screen all day at work, so having big black areas to the left and the right doesnt bother me too much.)

I have two questions:
I'm looking to get rid of my PS2 and trade it for a game but I'm not sure what adapter I have to get to make guitar hero 1 & 2 compatible with the PS3. What adapter works best?
I'm also looking to play my PS3 sound through a little stereo receiver instead of my TV speakers. Can I plug the component cables into the Analog slot and just use the audio from them while still using the video from HDMI? To clarify: I want to plug component or composite cables into my PS3 and get sound sent to my reciever via the RCA cables but still use HDMI for video.

I've tried the Pelican PS3/PS2 adapter, and it works fine for GH1. However, I would never use it for GH2 - it really doesn't work well for that game at all. I'm not aware of an adapter that lets the PS3 play nicely with GH2, unfortunately.

There's also a Radioshack adapter that should work fine for GH1. I haven't tried it, though.

Not sure where it is, but their is a site (might even be official PS3 forum) that compiled a list of compatible headsets. Any Bluetooth SHOULD work. You can usually get a low-end Jabra for the $20 range. I got a Jabra BT-150 for that recently, and it works great. Check dealnews.com and your local newspaper electronic store ads for the current specials.
As a bonus, I can say that the Jabra is MUCH clearer-sounding (and probably more durable) than the chintzy, wired Xbox 360 headsets (yes, I'm dual platform).

Just received my PS3 delivery. It is all set up. I have it connected to my 1080i tv via HDMI. It is updating right now. But I have a couple of questions.
1) The words on the menu screen are kinda blurry. But the wavy design in the background is crisp. Is that just how it is?
2) Can I use the analog audio cables and connect them to my sound system and also use the HDMI cables on my tv? My DVD/sound system is ancient and doesn't have an HDMI in and out. If so, any special settings to tinker with or will it automatically play the audio through the RCA plugs?
Thanks. Now to find some good games. Trying to decide if I should buy VF5 or wait for the 360 version...

Check the other options in the display settings section of the XMB, it may be one of those options that'll make the text appear clear, as it should be.
Yeah, you can separate what your audio and video outputs are. I have my HDMI used for video and the composite cable for audio. You have to set them yourselves in the display settings when you set your video output settings.

I have the sound set up now. But I can't get things to be not blurry. Also, I was setting up the PlayStation Network and I got to the last page to confirm everything when I saw that I had made a mistake on the email address. There was no button to make changes that I saw, just a "Back" and "Confirm". So I went back to fix the e-mail. When I went back forward, they would not let me pick my same screen name. My actual screen name had been available, now it seems it is locked out. Any ideas on either issue I am still having?

I think the best course should've been to keep going and change the email after it went through. You can change your info afterwards, so it wouldn't have been a big deal, I think.
I checked it out and yeah, you can change your sign-in ID/email address, you just need the password to do it. I'm not sure what you can do if you backed out before completing it.

Alright so I got my PS3 today and it came with the 3 Amazon blu rays (I picked 300, Kingdom of Heaven and Kung Fu Hustle). I like the interface so far and the downloadable videos are nice. I've played demos for Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Hevenly Sword and Resistance and honestly none of them felt like they deserved my hard earned cash. It's not a problem since the game that sold the system for me is Ratchet and I know that'll be good.

Two last ideas before you call Sony.
Make sure that when you hit the start key after the last number, that it doesn't insert a space right after the credit card number. This would make PS network see: (Creditcardnumber)_ ... Which is one alphanumeric variable too long.
Make sure you use the BILLING address associated with that debit card. Not your current address. Not one of the alternate addresses associated with you debit card account.

Ok, I apologize if this question has already been asked. My PS3 is connected by HDMI, which works fine most of the time. The first PS2 game I tried was Devil May Cry 3, which worked perfectly. Later I tried Resident Evil 4 and Indigo Prophecy. Both times, the screen was tightly compressed into about half of my screen space and a constant hissing came out of my speakers, drowning out the game soundtrack. Tried rebooting, no change. DVDs, PS3 games, and Devil May Cry 3 still work perfectly, and I am fully updated. Any ideas?

I plugged the charger cable into the controller, but the lights don't blink. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
There was some discussion about this (http://boardsus.playstation.com/rss/message?board.id=ps3&message.id=1762601) on the Official Playstation Boards. Personally, I would be concerned about voltage and the subsequent loss of $50.00 from my wallet. :) Charging your Sixaxis with more (or worse less) voltage than it requires could reduce the life of your battery pack or outright kill your controller. I'm guessing that your cell phone charger's wires are mapped to the pins differently than standard USB.
What I did, was go an buy a basic, run-of-the-mill USB extension cable (maximum length is 16.5 feet) and I can recharge it while playing without being two feet away from the TV or I could tuck it away so it wasn't sitting (all ugly) in front of my PS3 while I was doing other things.
I know it's not the same thing but it's an option.

The USB charger for the SixAxis is jut a normal one right? I had a USB cable for my Sony digicam I had laying around and have been using it instead since it's slightly longer.

I guess this answers my question before asking it, but to be sure... is there no way to charge the controller without leaving the system on? Sounds like a pretty retarded setup if not. Especially since the system is in standby unless you flip the power switch on the back. Lame.
Where can I nab a cheap USB extension? Focus on the "cheap." :) 16.5 feet would be nice.

Thanks for the suggestion. I went ahead and plugged it into the charger to try it out and it didn't work anyways hehe. I'll probably end up buying a long usb cable too. :)

Yep... I do it all the time since I leave my Macintosh on 24/7. :)

I do this with my laptop.
Now I just need to find a good deal on a bluetooth keyboard. Wish they made bluetooth trackballs.

I just read that you can charge the Sixaxis with the Wii in standby mode. That's awesome. The competitors do more with their hardwarere than Sony can. Brilliant.

Hmm..I might be able to get a 60gb from a friend who is selling it for $350(is this a good price?) Any noticable difference between it and the 80gb? Or is the 60GB just perfect?

60GB is the sweet one because it has the 'emotion engine' in it that allows near full backwards compatibility with PS1 and PS2 games. The 80GB will run software emulation to get games to work much like the 360. Also like the 360 the list is spotty. I think I read 80% of PS2 games work, and of those, many have quirks.
$350 is a great price if you can take advantage of Blu-ray. $350 soley for gaming purchase still seems a bit high when considering the library of 360 also-rans. A year in and the only noteworthy games are Motorstorm, Resistance and Heavenly Sword, none of which garner triple-A status.

Yeah as of right now I really want to play Warhawk, Ninja Gaiden and Resistance. Also Ratchet, Uncharted, and Unreal are coming out which I am super looking forward too. And of course Metal Gear *omg head explodes* Solid 4, which won''t be for several months but the PS3 lineup isn't severely bad at the moment.

You can't. It only works if WiiConnect24 is on, but that's not the normal standby mode.

Monoprice. I just got two six foot USB extensions for 5 dollars and some change. Shipped.
I was never really a fan of wireless controllers. So I extend the USB cable on the PS3, and use a wired controller on my 360 Elite.

I just got a Jabra BT 150 headseat to use with my PS3 online. I was able to pair it fine, but I'm not sure whether it is working or not. I went into the settings section to make it my input device, and was able to see that meter go to the right (the one that detects the volume of your voice?), which I assume shows that it is working properly.
Except when I went into a game of resistance, it didn't seem as if anyone was able to hear me. What is a sure fire way of testing to know that it is properly working? Thanks for any help.

I wanted to start Lunar: Silver Star Story (PSX) soon on my PS3, but a friend of mine mentioned that his PS3 randomly deleted his Persona 3 save.

Yeah, it happened to me once. I used to keep my virtual memory cards in the "slots" when turning my PS3 on or off but now I just release the card before I turn it off and put it in the slot when I start a game and I haven't had any problems since. Hope that helps.

I have a question regarding backwards compatability on the EE vs the non-EE models.
I remember seeing something back when the non-EE first came about that it had less compatable titles, but the ones that did work looked better than the ones ran using the EE. Along with this was some screenshots of FF XII running on the software emulation that looked great and showed more detail than the game running on the PS2.
Is this actually the case? Or does the PS3 upconvert the graphics using either method?
Also there was a thread on here a while back that had comparison screenshots of games running on the PS2 vs the PS3 but I cant seem to find it now. Anyone have a link to that thread or something similar?
Thanks.

Both PS3's upconvert the same way. There were apparently some fake FFXII pics floating around at the time, so you may have been misled. 80GB has no advantage as far as upscaling is concerned.

Those FF12 high resolution shots weren't fakes, instead it was running on a developer's PS3. Which means that it's certainly possible to render ps2 games at high res, but the feature may be limited to things like still shots for advertising purposes.

I have my PS3 hooked up via HDMI and TOSLINK to my S590S receiver, but I'm having trouble getting Dolby/DTS sounds out of God of War 2. I get 5.1 from DVDs/Blu-rays/PS3 games, but just not PS2 games. I noticed when I power the system on, the receiver says Dolby and I hear the opening chime in 5.1, but when it hits the menu, it disappears.
Any ideas?
Right now the audio output settings that are checked are:
DD 5.1
DTS 5.1
AAC
Linear PCM 2 Ch. 44.1 kHz (checked, can't change)
Linear PCM 2 Ch. 88.2 kHz (unchecked)
Linear PCM 2 Ch. 176.4 kHz (unchecked)
Linear PCM 2 Ch. 48 kHz (checked, can't change)

Well, fake in that your PS3 won't make it look like that.
Got 2 more questions.
1- How can I get audio out if I connect my hdmi cable to a tv equipped just with a DVI port? AFAIK there's no optical cable on the ps3 (unlike the ps2) and I dont know how i'd get audio out on such a thing.
(edit) deleted question #2 since ps3 video 9 does what I need done.

It, in fact, does have optical out. You can also hook up the standard composite/component cables and use them for audio as well.

Blackout, your friend lied. Nearly all products have some form of warranty, but especially these expensive electronic items. In fact, I could look in my PS3 box to find my warranty card right now if you need proof. So tell your friend to do some research before answering.
Oh, and unlike the 360, recent stress tests by the PS3 community has shown that the PS3 is a very well made piece of hardware, so it's unlikely you'll need to use your warranty either. They put it in a sauna and ran it for a long time and it ran fine, they froze it, and the system did have trouble, mainly because the disc drive motor froze up, once it thawed there were no problems. There were other tests too, and in the end the PS3 came out fine.
Meanwhile, my 360 which has mostly been sitting on the table starting having a GPU overheat issue which causes it to freeze up after 1-4 hours of play depending on the game.
h0mi - Besides the optical output, which is in the PS3, after setting the PS3 to HDMI output, it'll then give you an option to choose where the audio comes out from. I think there's an option to pass it through normal composite cables.
It, in fact, does have optical out. You can also hook up the standard composite/component cables and use them for audio as well.
Hm i checked again and lo & behold, there it is. I wonder how the hell I missed it the 1st time?
Thanks.

Ok this I don't understand ... everyone bashed MS for the fail rate on the 360. I have had my unit since right after launch and other than a few freezes have had no issues.
Today I buy a PS3 60gb Model. I have had NOTHING BUT TROUBLE with this machine since the moment it booted up. I have it hooked up to my TV via HDMI.
1. The console will not play ANY PS2 GAMES. I put one in, starts to load, then all I get is a black screen and the system wont do anything. The only thing I can do at that point is turn the power off from the switch in the back of the PS3.
2. Damn system keeps cutting itself off my wireless network for no reason. Nothing else I have ran through the wireless has problems staying connected.
3. What happened to the PS3 running so much cooler than the 360. The thing that looks like a grill feels like one too. If I touch the back of my PS3 after a short 30 minutes, it is scorching hot.
If anyone has any suggestions ... dear god please let me know. Had the thing for a few hours and am ready to return it already.

The PS3 does run pretty hot, though.
I installed a linux partition on the PS3 today, but can't get VLC to install. Using Yumex, I get a "yum.baseError" when I try to. I have no idea how to fix this. Does anyone have any ideas? All I'm looking to do is play my emulators and use VLC to watch videos on the system.

The heat thing I can deal with; especially since I am used to the 360. I just wasn't expecting it. The issue with the PS2 games is more upsetting to me.
I checked a few other forums and aparently the issue only came about after the latest firmware update which I did when I first got the console.
Each time I want to play a PS2 games, I have to turn the system on with a hard reset by holding down the power button until it beeps a second time. Doing that makes the PS2 game run fine for the session.
If I don't do a hard reset the next time I turn it on, no PS2 game playing for me. Hopefully this issue will get fixed with the next update. It's happenning to alot of people apparently but not all of them. I wonder what the difference is that is causing the error to occcur.
Still haven't found out anything about the wireless disconect though.

I am finally frustrated enough with this POS system that I am taking it back. Now I can't connect to the Internet at all. Everything was working fine until today when I downloaded some demos from the store.
Now I can't connect at all. Whenever I try to redo the network setting, I keep getting errors during the connection test. If I try to go back to the settings after that, I can't even change them. All I get is a blank fucking screen.
Everything else wireless in my house connects just fine...Wii...Laptop...x360... only this thing won't work. So much for the fucking great stability of the system.

Rub a Dub or something like that.
More issues now to add to the frustration. Whenever I try to wireless connect my PS3, it kicks everything else off my wireless router, including the hardwired computer, and I have to reboot the router before anything else will work.
On top of THAT, now whenever I quit out of a disc based game, ie Warhawk, Genji, Lair ..... I get stuck on a blank black screen.
This is driving me nuts.
I have tried everything I can think of. I hard done a hard reset on the console, I have reformatted the system. Nothing seems to help.

Have you been putting d/led stuff from your comp on your PS3? Maybe you got a virus that way somehow. Don't know if it's possible or not. But it's weird that it would just get that messed up without you having made any major changes to the system.

Nah the only thing I put on was the demo that was downloaded from within the store on the PS3. I have no idea whats going on. Maybe I just got a busted shitty console. The problem is... I got it at Target and none of the stores in my area have any of the 60gb models left. I don't want the 80gb model due to the lack of EE chip and my abundance of low profile ps2 games.
What happens exactly is I go to Network Setting, enter all my information and then run the test. Sometimes everything work, sometimes not. But EVERY SINGLE TIME when I press the "O" button like it says to do in order to get back to the menu, I get an error message saying that an error has occurred. From that point on, I can never access the Network Settings page again on the console unless I do a restore default. Frustrating as hell I tell ya.
I just can't believe how much stuff is wrong. If you see my post a page or two back, I also have to do a hard reset after playing any PS2 game or any future PS2 games will not load. Just one crappy experience after another.
