Nah the only thing I put on was the demo that was downloaded from within the store on the PS3. I have no idea whats going on. Maybe I just got a busted shitty console. The problem is... I got it at Target and none of the stores in my area have any of the 60gb models left. I don't want the 80gb model due to the lack of EE chip and my abundance of low profile ps2 games.

What happens exactly is I go to Network Setting, enter all my information and then run the test. Sometimes everything work, sometimes not. But EVERY SINGLE TIME when I press the "O" button like it says to do in order to get back to the menu, I get an error message saying that an error has occurred. From that point on, I can never access the Network Settings page again on the console unless I do a restore default. Frustrating as hell I tell ya.

I just can't believe how much stuff is wrong. If you see my post a page or two back, I also have to do a hard reset after playing any PS2 game or any future PS2 games will not load. Just one crappy experience after another.

send it in to Sony... hell maybe they'll send you a new one. having an 80gb system might not be so bad, just check to see if the ps2 games you really want to play work.

As long as you don't take out the disc, it'll save your spot.

Can you transfer PS2 and PS1 saves from the virtual memory cards to a real memory card slot with the memory card adapter?

Unless they've changed it in the most recent firmware, it should still be one way only (i.e. PS1/PS2 memory card to virtual memory card).

Speaking of memory cards, is there a way to transfer a PS3 game save from one PS3 to another? Like, could I move a save to a flash drive and take it to a friend's house?

Vanigan
10-20-2007, 08:38 AM
Justin42: Yes! It's as simple as that, just put in any standard USB flash drive, browse in the XMB to your save file, press the triangle and an option to copy it over to the flash drive should be there. Then when you bring it to your friend's house it's just as easy to copy it over.

Is there any way/site that lets you download the wallpapers that pop up with game discs? The Ratchet and Clank one is gorgeous.

got a 60 gig ps3 yesterday I can connect to my wireless router linksys wrt54g v5. upon start up/starting/ending a game the ps3 will kick my other wireless things out of the router untill the ps3 establishes a connection then it will allow my Wii and laptop back on. hardwired things are not affected.

whats going on and how to I fix it?

Vanigan

Could be a router issue more likely. Have you given your PS3 a static IP on the router yet? That helps in a lot of cases, your router might be bugging out every time the PS3 reconnects and requests an IP.

The PS3 for some reason likes to reset a lot.

Try turning off the PS3's connect to media server option in the network settings. That usually fixes that problem.

Hello, fellow ps3 owners.Im having trouble connecting my 20gb PS3 to my wireless router(Linksys WRT150N), using my laptop(sharing the connectiion). When I enable sharing of my Wireless Connection, the computer tells me that LAN IP will be set to 192.168.0.1,even after I set up a different static IP.I allow sharing then I completely lose connection.I regain wireless connection only after disabling LAN.HELP!I spent all weekend trying to get PS3 online.

Ok first of all I want to apologize for how stupid I am but I just want to make sure I have the right cables before opening them.

So I went to Best Buy to ask them how to set my PS3 up with my HDTV. And They told me to buy this cable http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8426223&st=VIV+to+hdmi+cable&type=product&id=1181832625335

And this Audio Cable

Now im looking at the back of my ps3 and my TV and I can see where the first cable goes into but for the audio cable what do I do with it?

I feel so dumb asking you guys how to set this up but Im a total noob and would greatly appreciate your help to this simple problem.

thanks in advance.

What kind of connectors are on your TV?

BB cables are a ripoff beyond belief.. especially digital cables. (Analog signals are a bit different but irrelevant to your question) the same video cable they gave you is available at monoprice for $4 (And since it's all digital in this case the cable will work fine-- don't buy their BS about jitter or whatever)
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10231&cs_id=1023104&p_id=2404&seq=1&format=2

That audio cable won't work at all with the PS3-- there's no analog output on the PS3 to plug it into! Just use the composite cable that it comes with to get the R/L analog, if you don't have anything you could plug an optical cable into. Does your TV accept optical in? Get a cheap optical cable, something like this:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10229&cs_id=1022901&p_id=2764&seq=1&format=2

(I'm not sure if you can get audio over a DVI port, but I doubt it-- hopefully someone else with a bit more knowledge can answer)

thanks in advance. Please tell me you haven't opened those packages with the cables yet.

The first thing you need to do is promptly place them in a bag with the receipt so you can return them tomorrow.

Then go to monoprice.com and buy similar cables which will likely save you over $40.

You can't get audio through the DVI. Do you have a receiver with an optical in? If so just get an optical/Toslink cable from monoprice. Let us know what kind of audio inputs your TV/receiver can take.

The same HDMI/DVI cable can be had from Monoprice for around $5. Here's the link (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10231&cs_id=1023104&p_id=2404&seq=1&format=2).

The best buy guy said I need that specific type of Cable but what should I get for my audio? How do I check if i have an optical in?If you check the back of your PS3, there's an optical audio out for it. It's the third one from the left, between the ethernet/network port and the A/V port. Your TV doesn't have an optical out, but I'm assuming you have a receiver so check for one.

If your receiver does have an optical out, all you need to do is go to monoprice.com again and search for optical/Toslink (they're called either) in whatever length you want. I believe they have two kinds: one's just the regular cable material the other has metal ends and braiding. Either will work, it's just a matter of preference.

If you don't have a receiver or an optical out to use, though, just use the included A/V cable with the PS3 (yellow, white, red jacks) to run the white and red jacks to a corresponding one to the back of your TV. You don't need to use the yellow plug since you're using HDMI for video.

My PS3 died Fri, so I gotta send it to Sony. They said that I must ship my HDD and that I would unfortunately lose all my data (since it's a power problem).

So I would like to remove my hard drive and take it to a friend's place to backup my data.

1) I'm assuming you can do this w/o voiding the warranty, correct?
2) Is it difficult or time consuming? If not, I can google the process.

Thanks.

Ok so ive been using HDMI and all is well. But now my mom wants to give me her old tv without HDMI(which in turn i want to use strictly for my ps3) it does have DVI and so my question is. what is the better way to go hdmi-to-dvi or get the $20 sony component cable, i know i cant get sound thru DVI but that can be fix with the av cables. all i need to know is which would be a better approach? and are those sony component cables any good? i see those and "monster cables" which is priced off the roof.

err after research i found out about hdmi to dvi. now would there be quality lost?

I don't know the technical stuff to quality loss of HDMI to DVI, but I doubt it's perceptible to most people if there is a loss. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Usually people here can answer you pretty quickly, but if you don't get a reply, it's more likely we just don't know.

Well I was looking at that but ive already got an HDMI cable. Anyways this morning i did order the hdmi to dvi adapter which is this one. (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10419&cs_id=1041902&p_id=2029&seq=1&format=2)

My only concern prior to ordering it is if it would work, after plenty of research regarding dvi there seems to be 4 variations which is dvi-i single & dual and dvi-d single and dual. Ive read the manual for the particular tv im planning to use and it doesnt really give much info on it. anyways i went ahead and ordered it hoping its the right one. If anyone can tell me more about the differences between the single and dual or wether single would work id appreciate it.

Oh my DVI plug did have all the holes and had a "+" with 4 holes on each corner so i have no idea which will work and i can only hope it does.:-#

I don't lose connection to the internet, but the sixaxis ALWAYS de-syncs when I start a PS2 game and when I leave a PS2 game. I have a 20GB but I think it's a problem with the 60GB, too. The 80 GB uses emulation so it might be different and I heard they improved the Bluetooth connection, too.

It's because they're using the PS2 hardware, so it has to switch over to that and turn off the controller and internet. I don't think the 80 GB does it since the emulation is pretty much software-based, so it wouldn't need to do that.

Nah I have an 80 GB and it does the same thing. Have to press the PS button on the controller once the game starts and after once you exit out.

Anyone aware of how to get the title updates (in North America) for previously released games to work with rumble? Do I have to hop online to get it or will the PS3 auto-update when I start the game? MotorStorm auto-updated when I went online and I was able to find the rumble option in the game menu. Warhawk did an auto-update at the disc loading screen, but I can't find the option to turn it on. Specifically, I'm looking to see how to get updates and how they're handled with the following games:

Heavenly Sword

And I figured out my problem. First I plugged in composite cables. That worked. But I didn't want to have to switch to compostie every time I played. So I plugged HDMI back in and messed around with the display settings. I think just switching PS/PS2 game displays to fullscreen is what did the job.

If your TV has an HDMI input (it probabaly does), the HDMI cable is the best option. Mostly for ease-of-use reasons. Anyway, just go to Monoprice.com (huge thread in Other Deals forum about them) and buy the cheapest priced cable that is the length you need. It's that easy :)

Maybe someone can answer this here. A couple times I had been folding, I got up to 30% and 65% each time. When I went back to fold again a day or two later, the 30% was at 0% and the 65% went down to around 30%. Does anyone know what the problem is? It kind of sucks to fold all that time and then lose all the data for some reason.

I believe if you have FAH set to Advanced there is a deadline involved, so if you don't fold for a couple days the deadline may pass and the work is scrapped. I disabled Advanced and haven't had that problem since.

How long do I have to complete it?
Note that Work Units "expire" after a certain amount of time. This means that after a certain amount of time, if the WU has not been returned, we assume it's not coming back and our server moves on from there. This is necessary due to the fact that future work units depend on old ones and so we need to eventually give the work to someone else to get it completed. The times to complete a WU for the PS3 is short (8 hours), so the deadline time is also correspondingly short (2 days).

Turning it off with the controller's fine. No need to flip the switch.

The only reason to plug the controller back in is if the battery's low. If you don't play much in a sitting, there's no need to do it every time.

Go to "Information" and rename the Album to whatever you want. Now go back to the other games you want to organize and put them in whatever Album you want.

Then at the XMB>Game, you should be able to hit Triangle and move up to Group Content>By Album.

Ok. I bought an Excellant condition ps3 60gb with 2 controllers and a game about 1 months ago for 365. It came without the box, but it had a receipt. I guess warranty ends in june 2008. I'm about to buy as a gift another like new PS3 60gb bundle with 2 controllers, 2 games, guitar hero 3 with guitar for 420. It has the original box and everthing, however no receipt. What do I do about the warranty, is there anyway to get one. And also extend the first one. Am I overreacting? Thanks everyone! :) :bouncy: :bomb: :hot:

How does it compare to other blu-ray players, or is it basically the same because of the ability to download firm-ware updates?

also does anyone have a picture of the backside of the ps3 where are the inputs are

It's better because of the ability to d/l firmware updates.

It will have an update before Christmas updating the firmware to profile 1.1 (biggest addition is picture in picture); at the moment, only one other BR player is 1.1 compatible (and it's $500).

Best one out there, IMO, for its features and price.

I've read that the PS3 plays Blu-ray movies at a speed of 60 frames per second rather than a multiple of the film standard 24 fps, and that this can lead to motion artifacts. Has anyone noticed such a thing?

I've not noticed any issues, but I don't have a 24Hz capable TV. The PS3 did receive an option to display in that way via a firmware upgrade a few months back, so you're golden if you have a set that can display at that rate.

only bad thng i heard was you cant get some audio codecs
im not sure which, but ps3 for now cant do certain audio codecs...

but so far its really good, has the fastest loading times i believe. Currently the only codecs it can't decode internally are DTS-HD High Resolution and DTS-HD Master Audio. No player, from any manufactuerer, for either HD DVD or Blu-Ray, can currently decode these codecs. Two HD DVD and 3 or 4 (I forget) Blu-Ray players can send them to an HDMI 1.3 receiver for decoding there, however. We've been told that the PS3 hardware is incapable of bitstreaming them in this fashion, but we've also been told several times by both Sony and DTS that internal decoding is coming. The last promise I saw was in July or August, that said we'd have it by the end of the year. There's only a month left, so I'm getting skeptical that the deadline will be hit, but I have no doubt it is in the works.

Bottom line is the PS3 will likely be the first player from either format that can decode the all the advanced audio codecs internally.

I've read that the PS3 plays Blu-ray movies at a speed of 60 frames per second rather than a multiple of the film standard 24 fps, and that this can lead to motion artifacts. Has anyone noticed such a thing? It's not motion artifacting, it's a phenomenon called 24fps judder, wherein some frames are repeated more than others (in nearly all cases, it's in a 3:2 cadence, for 60fps output). It's an extreme annoyance to people who notice it (I don't, personally). But this is NOT something new. If you haven't noticed it with DVDs, you won't notice it with Blu-Ray. The source is the same, and the results are the same.

However, that's not to say that the PS3 can't do 24fps. It was one of the first players from either format to do so (I think only the Pioneer 94HD had 24p before the PS3 did). Additionally, it has options for both 24p as an option if your TV tells the PS3 it supports 24p, and "force 24p", which outputs 24p whether your TV says it can take it or not. Some 120Hz TVs don't properly identify their video capabilities to players, so the first option will result in 60p output on those sets. This is where the "force" option comes in, for the sets that DO support 24p, but do not properly identify to the player that they can. Of course if you try the force option on a TV that really doesn't support 24p, you'll get no picture.

That's good to hear. I don't have a compatible set, but I hope that I will in the future, so I was curious. It doesn't sound like there's any downside to the PS3 for Blu-ray purposes.
There are a couple of downsides. It's relatively noisy, produces a lot of heat, doesn't have bitstreaming support for HDMI 1.3 recievers or analog audio outputs for Non-HDMI receivers, and can't be used with a universal remote. But in most cases, the benefits will outweigh the drawbacks by a rather wide margin.

All in all, the PS3 makes a great BD player. There are standalones that are better in several aspects, but none offer the speed or upgradeability that the PS3 offers. I'm a bit of an HT nut (as Myke will attest to) with both HiDef formats, and the PS3 is the first time I've EVER used a console as a video player in my life. I'm not 100% satisfied (and wouldn't be with a current standalone), but far closer than I ever expected to be.

Geko29 pretty much explained it all. Only thing is that I don't hear much noise out of the PS3 (compared to my 360 and Liteon dvd player). Definitely outputs quite a bit of heat.

Not too many HDTVs can accept and properly display 1080/24p at the moment. In the plasma side, only the high end Pioneers at 72Hz can do 3:3 pulldown. New Samsung LCDs can, but supposedly it still isn't displayed properly. Maybe it will be standard one day, but I think we're far from that and it isn't something to worry about. I don't notice the 24p judder phenomenon.

Hope internal DTS-HD MA decoding will arrive soon. But to be honest, AFAIK, Fox is the only studio that includes DTS-HD MA tracks on their discs. So you wouldn't be missing that much.

Although a lot of Blu-ray players are dropping to comparable prices, the PS3 is probably still the best value for its price, whether you're a gamer or not.

Like geko29, I would never use a console as a optical media movie player either, but PS3 is the exception (well 360 also, but I use the HDDVD drive for movies). Heck I don't use it for gaming at all.

I picked up an 80GB PS3 at WM on Saturday to take advantage of the Blu-Ray deal. One of its main selling points was backwards compatibility with PS2 games...since I've never owned a PS2, the PS3 would allow me to play some of the games I've missed from the last generation.

So I just received Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy from Goozex and popped it into my PS3. It told me to download a PS2 format file from the PSN store, which I did. It told me to create a PS2 game save card, which I did.

At last I thought I'd finally be able to play the game...but I'm now getting another error: it says that the game isn't compatible with the PS3 but if I update my system software it "may become compatible".

I checked the PS2 compatibility site and it says that the game will play with occasional freezing. I can't even get it to boot up! The disc is flawless: no scratches, no fingerprints.

Am I missing something? Some other little file I need to DL or create to be able to play this game? I have the most recent firmware...is that what it means by "updating my system software"?

Thanks in advance for any advice...

1) Yup, the optical sounds just fine. Unless you're some audiophile, I doubt you'll be able to spot a difference. The HDMI is great in that it's only one cable in, one cable out.

2) As far as I know, the PS3 is one of the few Blu-Ray players that allows easy upgrades in firmware. I think the only other Blu-Ray player that can do that is well above the price of a PS3 currently.

Is it comparable? If all you're outputting is standard Dolby Digital or DTS, quality would be the same either optical or HDMI. It's a digital signal after all, it's all or nothing, especially if the length of the cable isn't a factor.

Yeah then I can just do the optical...

I have to take this all in account and decide if I wanna drop the 500 bucks or so to get the PS3 and the rest of the cables...

What is actually sparking this desire is my want to stop buying regular DVDs now, seeing eventually I might have to re-buy a lot of them.... Superbad has really set me off on this track of getting a blu-ray player... since I have the HD drive, if it were HD-DVD I wouldn't even be in this mindstate yet, so I really have to weigh the pros in cons... the only con I see now is spening more money right now to possibly save some over the long run.

You can use optical if you want, but won't be able to get PCM audio from games or movies, or DD+, TrueHD, DTS-HD HR or DTS-HD MA (when available) from movies. I'd suggest either getting an HDMI switch, or switching one of your other devices (cable/satellite box, maybe?) to Component/optical, freeing up an HDMI for your PS3.

Im aware that you can replace the hard drive on the ps3. Obviously if it was filled up, that would be the rationale for doing so, but that's where I'm at a loss. Obviously PSN downloads is 1 way to fill it, but is there really that much to get, that many demos or trailers you'd want to keep to upgrade to a 120+ gb HDD?

I'm basically asking those of you who upgraded your hdd's why you did so... what's on your HDD that made you decide to upgrade. I feel that i dont get a lot of use out of my ps3 and perhaps this would be 1 way I could do so.

I think that's what he is asking, playing it with a dance pad. Otherwise, there would be no point.

There's a site (I need to find the link) that sells DDR pads which work on 20/60GB PS3 consoles only. I'm considering it, if I do not buy an adapter.

I play with a controller very rarely, except for dance master mode (in which it is a necessity, of course). :)

OK, so I just tried it on my Pelican adapter. My hard Pelican Gamestop pad worked, as did my 1st gen hard RedOctane Ignition.

It seemed like the Pelican suffered from quite a bit of lag (getting me a C and a B on heavy Syncronized Love and Midnight Blaze, respectively. I can usally A those two easily), but it could have also been the pad itself, which is OK but not great as well as me being out of practice. The RedOctane felt a lot better, but there seemed to be minimal lag.

So, they do work, but they seem a bit laggy. Still, it's better than nothing. Plus you can calibrate the lag and timing difficulty if need be.

I wonder if USB pads like the Ignition 3.0 work?

I wonder if USB pads like the Ignition 3.0 work? No, it does not (that's the pad I have). It somewhat works on the XMB (although calibration is very off and buttons aren't mapped right), but it will turn off when PS2 games are played when switching to PS2 hardware mode (also, the pad was configured for a PC).

I'm not sure if I completely understand how the PSN friends thing works...

The people that are in my list on the homepage don't seem to be carried into the lists in my games.

Do I have to add friends to my in-game list for every new title I buy? Even if it's the same people over and over?I don't the PSN list is carrying over into all games yet. It's pretty sporadic which games have the PSN friends' list carrying over into multi.

TMK can probably offer more on this since he's online a lot with his system.

Will it be possible for me to put the music/files I have on my PSP to PS3 via remote play?

The Mana Knight
12-23-2007, 08:23 PM
Will it be possible for me to put the music/files I have on my PSP to PS3 via remote play? That does not work, because you use the PSP to log-in to your PS3 (meaning regular PSP features are disabled) while you are doing this (kind of like internet browsing on the PSP). If you want your music files on your PS3, just connect a USB cable from your PSP to your PS3 (just copy the files over).

I'm not sure if I completely understand how the PSN friends thing works...

The people that are in my list on the homepage don't seem to be carried into the lists in my games.

Do I have to add friends to my in-game list for every new title I buy? Even if it's the same people over and over?If you are playing Resistance, then this is the case. Since Resistance's online network was setup before most of the PSN infrastructure, you gotta add friends within the game. The friends list on Resistance is completely separate from the XMB friends list. I actually like that idea because my PSN buddy list is maxed out (so I can have friends just for Resistance). I honestly don't know any other games like this.

However, all other PS3 games that support the friends list, such as Warhawk, Need for Speed Carbon, MotorStorm, etc., your XMB friend's list is imported. If you want to add a friend, some games have it to where you can do it in-game (not many), but the majority of the time you'll just use Player's Met to add someone to your friends list (who you met in-game).

If you don't have Resistance, tell me what games you are playing online then.

Bought a 20 GB ps3 off craigslist a few months ago (wanted to have the "true" BC), but have been having problems with it ever since. People said it may have been the firmware update, since some people had problems with it, but the new firmware update was released a few weeks ago and it still freezes. It's weird because I can play DVDs and cds fine, but some demos freeze up on me, uncharted freezes up on me, and the system freezes up when I use the web browser. I don't have any blu-ray movies to try out.

I've tried unplugging my ethernet cable from my ps3, and disabling the update bar thingy, but that didn't seem to work. I don't think this has anything to do with it either, but I use the HDMI cable that came with my xbox 360 elite for the ps3. Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hard disk problems come to mind, especially if its happening under heavy disk access (demos, local video files, etc). Throw another hard disk in there and see how it fares. They're cheap and the system could probably stand an upgrade anyway.

Well, I am also a total ps3 n00b as well, and I'm literally out of any disposable cash until I get loan money for next semester. If the hard disk is the problem, I think I may try to format the hard disk, cause I don't really use my ps3 anyways cause of the freezing problem. Any problems I should look out for/be careful of when doing this? Thanks.

Any USB (if you want wired) or Bluetooth (if you want wireless) headset would work. What is your price range?

On the USB side of things, there is the Microsoft LX-3000 headset, which seems to be well reviewed for about $30: Link (http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-LifeChat-LX-3000-Headset-JUG-00001/dp/B000J4WPW8/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1199202107&sr=8-1)
On the Bluetooth side, the Plantronics Voyager 510 (Bluetooth) seems highly reviewed, and it is $40:

They still sell the bundle where you can grab the Jabra BT that comes with Warhawk for "$20". The game can be bought for $40 without it, or $60 with the headset. Subtracting the non-bundle's price is where I got the $20. If you might have wanted the game this could be a way to go too.

If it is a problem with the hard drive, formatting it will not help. Unless somehow the PS3 OS or some software is corrupt. You can always pull it from the PS3, put it in your PC and run a program to check if the HDD is good. Something like Disk fitness test by Hitachi, it's effective and free.

Good luck!

Today, I upgraded my 60gb PS3 with a 250gb WD Passport hard drive. I took the 250gb drive out of its external casing and my plan was to put the outgoing 60gb hard drive from my ps3 into the casing so that I could have a 60gb portable drive. However, when I attached the usb adapter to the drive and connected it via usb the LED on the external casing would turn on and off and ultimately would not power on.

My question is: Has anyone been able to power their PS3 hard drive via usb after taking it out? Is there something wrong with my drive?

A problem I'm starting to get concerned about (it's happened 3 times now)...

I set the PS3 to fold overnight and will usually turn it off in the AM. The first night went as planned. The second night, 60 seconds after I set it to fold and turned off my TV, the PS3 turned itself off. I felt it to make sure it wasn't over heated, turned it on to make sure it didn't fry itself, and then turned it off for the night. I bought an intercooler for it and have that attached now. Since then it's turned itself off within 10 minutes of me starting the folding session twice in the last 7 days. Any clues as to what's going on? I don't think it's overheating, as it's staying fairly cool and has no other problems. It also hasn't turned itself off during gameplay or any other times. Just when folding... sometimes.

The intercooler is unnecessary and will do nothing but harm the PS3, from what I've seen. You can wait for confirmation from someone else on that though.

I hope that won't turn into a bigger problem, since that type of behavior is usually what happens before the system fails permanently.

How would I go about getting warranty coverage if I needed it? The system still has its serial number on it and has never been opened. If I called sony with that info and said I received it as a gift in say June 2007 are they going to give me a hard time and/or deny any warranty coverage?

Just wondering if anyone has any experience so far.

Stick to a 60 GB new or used no matter what you do. It's the best of all the countless systems and various SKus Sony seems to astute of doing. Not a good idea, IMHO. The PS3 is a much better blu-ray player than the BDP-S300, and is also a superior multimedia device (upconverts SD DVDs, plays DivX, etc), so at $400 it's a much better bargain than the BDP-S300 is at $300.

Nah, he said he got it as a "gift" but never opened it cause he uses his 360. I think it was pretty shady to begin with, but once I made up my mind to get the system I got overanxious and was just like "whatever, I need this now!@#@!". But it is by no ways a "busted" system or anything like that.

jm2u - Is there any way I can check the hard drive "externally"? (ie. not having to put it in my laptop, but maybe use some sort of adapter that uses a USB cable or something?) I bought a PS3 the saturday after Black Friday from WalMart, and I just opened it today. Whithin the time I was setting up the settings, I noticed that it got hot from the right side. If you have it placed horizontally, I believe the right side is where the vent is. Its hot there because the fan is doing its job and getting the heat OUT of the unit.

You should store your PS3 vertically, so the vent is on top.

There was one person who wouldn't stop bugging me with messages (who didn't speak English and didn't understand it too well), so I ended up just blocking that person and haven't heard from them again.

One of my oldest posts here, I discussed about some guy who kept requesting to be my friend and he kept annoying me (asking me to make him wallpapers and such and wouldn't leave me alone). I removed him and he came back. Eventually, he did stop adding and communicating with me, but that was before I learned how to block people.

Blocking is the best method IMO.

Nah, he said he got it as a "gift" but never opened it cause he uses his 360. I think it was pretty shady to begin with, but once I made up my mind to get the system I got overanxious and was just like "whatever, I need this now!@#@!". I honestly forget if the system was covered in plastic or whatever in retrospect. Dumb move on my part, and maybe the guy didn't have a receipt anyways. But it is by no ways a "busted" system or anything like that.

jm2u - Is there any way I can check the hard drive "externally"? (ie. not having to put it in my laptop, but maybe use some sort of adapter that uses a USB cable or something?) I would like to take care of this myself first if possible, and I would hate to have to send my system in only to find out that it was, in fact, a busted HDD I could replace myself. Thanks again.

I don't know if this is possible but could you run a program off a flash drive plugged into your ps3?

I'm thinking of getting a PS3, it will either be the 20GB or 60GB, can anyone direct me to a direct comparison of both units please?

I'm thinking of getting a PS3, it will either be the 20GB or 60GB, can anyone direct me to a direct comparison of both units please? It's probably been around this thread several times, but I can definitely tell you.

What the 60GB has and the 20GB does not have is:
-Card readers (Supports Memory Stick Pro, SD Card, and Compact Flash)

-WiFi (it's internal. With the 20GB, you gotta buy some wireless bridge or gaming adapter. USB WiFi adapters will not work).

-Larger HDD with a bigger cache (I believe the 20GB has 2MB of cache while the 60GB has 8MB of cache. The advantage is some games which utilize the HDD (GripShift and VF5 come to mind especially), the loading will be much quicker on the 60GB. If you replace the HDD, there will be no difference)

-Chrome trim compared to solid black

-Initially, the 60GB could do remote play with the PSP while the 20GB could not. Now, they both can.

Both have FULL PS2 BC (along with playing PS1 games oh course). Both have 4 USB ports.

I remember you were also wanting to reserve your name for PSN LinkinPrime (I think that was you) a while ago? I believe there is a way now, by creating a PSN ID at the PS Store for the PC (I cannot 100% guarantee it, but you go through the same process and I believe it should also work on the PS3).

If you want a new one [I only buy new hardware] , good luck finding a 20GB .

Toys R Us lists it on their website as in-store only , with no ability to search store stock .

I hope you can find one , if you want a 20 though .

I'm certain this has been posted before, but recently I've seen Walmart's 60gb PS3 Bundle (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5303673) (60gb PS3, one game of your choice from a list, Blu-Ray remote for $499) float in and out of stock. Haven't had the balls to pull the trigger yet though.

Not sure if you've seen the submission form for the 5 Free BD's, but you'll need a copy of the store receipt, too.
If you're going the Ebay route be sure to ask the selling to include that!

Wow! For my 40th birthday, a bunch of awesome co-workers got together and bought me an 80GB PS3, and I'm psyched. For the first time since Genesis/Super NES era, I own all the current platforms. Anyway, here is my issue...

I don't have HDMI on my receiver, so I connected the HDMI cable directly to my TV. Unfortunately, my receiver is fresh out of optical audio (Toslink) jacks. Here is a potential solution: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10423&cs_id=1042302&p_id=2946&seq=1&format=2

There are some similar (and more costly) devices on Amazon. Does anyone have any experience with any of these products?

For the record, I have purchased a ton of stuff from monoprice.com in the past, and have found there stuff to be of high quality, and I really love their customer service.

You could've saved $100 and bought the Sony BDP-S300 Blu-Ray player. He could have, but then he'd have just a piece of shit Blu-Ray player instead of a great Blu-Ray player AND a game system.

Or put another way: when my parents (in their late 60s) asked me what kind of Blu-Ray player they should get, I told them the 40GB PS3. They're very happy with it. :)

Man I have a problem with the PS3 connections. Today I ran out and bought a philips HDMI cable.

Ok here is the scenerio.
I have a Sony LCD TV with one hdmi port. I also have a Sony surround system with no hdmi port.

If I have an hdmi cable then I don't need to have the red, white, and yellow cable that came with the PS3 plugged in?
I plugged in the hdmi cable from the PS3 to the television. I got the picture and sound was coming out of the television speakers not the surround system.
How do I get sound from the surround system? I thought that the hdmi cable was for picture and sound?

Do I really need the optical cable for crystal clear 5.1 sound? Are the more expensive ones better? Or does it matter as long as its an optical cable?
http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_constraint=0&search_query=optical+cable+&ic=24_0

How I had the PS3 set-up before I bought the hdmi cable was, I had the yellow cable go to the TV and I had the red and white go to the receiver.

After playing around with the cables, I managed to get sound to come out through the surround system. What I did was I kept the red and white cables in the receiver and I unplugged the yellow one from the TV. The hdmi cable is plugged into the tv instead of the yellow cable.

Will an optical cable really optimize the sound quality like an hdmi cable optimizes the picture quality?

Is the sound that comes from using an optical cable clearer than the sound that comes by using the red/white composite cables?

There needs to be a website that has a picture of a cable and the name. All this composite, componet, optical stuff can get confusing.

Hmm...If anybody has a better thread to throw this in, suggest away. I haven't been able to complete a game of Madden 08 in my last 8 or so tries. I even tried messing around with port triggering (Netgear) and it still didn't work last night. I suppose I could fool around with it some more tonight.

Insight?

I just tried to open all of the ports for my PS3's IP, but I still keep getting disconnected from Madden. I'm starting to get fed up. Any more ideas?

Yes. Optical will really optimize your surround sound. It will also be more clear. I couldn't live without using optical. Also if you want to save a couple of bucks, buy your optical and HDMI cables at Monoprice.com You'll save a great deal of money and get some nice high quality cables.

Hi. My ps3 started freezing a today. It did it 2 times while I was playing blazing angles and after turning it off by the switch in the back I booted it up again, to find that my blazing angels data was corrupted. The HDD idicator thing wasnt flashing so it was safe to turn off. Does anyone know anything about PS3 freezing problems and if there is a way to save ur games in other areas than the hard drive. Thanks from a ticked off new PS3 owner.

I would definitely get Resistance, Warhawk, and Super Stardust HD (PSN). Possibly Unreal Tournament 3 as well if you're into hardcore shooters. Rent Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank: Future, and Heavenly Sword... they are all good games but short and single player only so there isn't much replay value.

never had my PS3 freeze on me, but i'm assuming after you save the game on to the HDD, cant you transfer that file on to a thumb stick or a memory card for safe keeping? I Dont think the game will save directly onto the thumb drive or a memory card/stick though.

I've actually had the same problem with mine but only twice. Once while playing a PS2 title, that just froze on me completely and I got the blue screen. The other while I was playing LEGO Star Wars: Complete Saga and it froze while in the middle of a save. Glady though, it come to again after like 4 minutes of wait, but thats still a pretty long time for it to take to save. o.0

So I had my PS3 hooked up to an HDTV via HDMI, and needless to say it was beautiful. But I couldn't leave it with that TV, I had to move it to a non-HDTV. Not wanting to buy new cables that I'll never use once I have a permanent HD to hook it up to, I just used the Red/White/Yellow ones that came with it. But there's a problem: it won't work. Seems I didn't change the video output before I disconnected it from the HD to those cables, and now no signal comes through.

Is there ANY way of fixing this short of finding another HDTV to hook it up to and then change the outputs? That'd be a HUGE pain I'd like to avoid.

Thanks!

dingo_stole_mybaby
01-16-2008, 04:22 PM
Hey the same thing happened to me. I had to hook mine back up and change the video output from 1080 to standard and change the output signal from hdmi to component. There could possibly be a FAQ or something in the manual, because you should be able to manipulate your settings to the correct ones, you just might not be able to see it. Other than doing it "blind" you could always call walmart or someplace with easily accessible tvs and go switch settings there. During off hours they would probably be excited to have something to do. Gamefaqs might have a thread on the system forum.

When you turn it on, hold the power "button" for five seconds until it beeps a second time. It will re-detect the attached cable and compatible video modes.

You'll have to do it again when you go back to the HDMI-equipped TV.

Try holding the power button on the PS# for about 5 seconds when you turn it on. You'll hear a second beep, release the button after that. That should fix it.
