PS2 component cables do work on the PS3; however, if the PS3 was previously set to an HDTV resolution higher than your TV, you need to reset the resolution to 480i by pressing the PS3 power button and holding it until it beeps a 2nd time.
Basically, the steps are:
-Press the PS3 power button and the PS3 beeps.
-Hold the power button for 5 seconds and the PS3 beeps again.
-After that it should boot up.
If this does not work, then something is up with the PS3.

Also how do I sign up for the network thing ? Also the psn games on the console is under someone else and if I make a new account will I still have those games? As along as you keep the previous account (you don't have to sign it online), you can play their games (as long as it isn't Warhawk, since that's tied to just one account).
As for creating a new account, first off, create a new PS3 console login. Then you go to the PlayStation Network area under the XMB, and then try to create a PSN account. You'll need an email and have to provide some info. Be sure to create a master account. Sorry, I don't remember all the steps, but just say you want to sign up for a PSN account after you create a new PS3 login.

Thanks for the info.
Well it seems that the account has warhawk so I am assuming I need to ask him the acc id and pw to get on it :/
Can I sign up online for a account or I have to do it on the console?

Can I sign up online for a account or I have to do it on the console?I believe you can now sign up here (just be sure to get your region right):
http://store.playstation.com/store/index.vm
And you choose sign-up/sign-in
Because I can login with my PSN-ID there to get PS Store for the PC content. I believe some others did sign up there, but I can't remember. Signing up on the console isn't bad, especially if you have some sort of USB keyboard (to enter all information).
Since Warhawk is a retail game and SCE wanted to prevent game sharing, it only ties to one account. All other PSN games can be accessed with the account you create.

Not a huge deal, but Kmart has the Sony brand PS2/PS1 memory card adapter on clearance now for $11.00. Save 4 bucks on something I'm going to buy anyway. OK!

Even if it has component, that doesn't mean it can go HD or even progressive scan. Just look up the make and model number of the television online and you should be able to find a spec sheet.

For a tv thats 13 inches Toshiba , which components do I need to buy ? ( can a ps2 cable component work for ps3 because if I does the ps3 I got doesn't work -_- if not phew )
No offense, but for a 13" TV who fucking cares? Use the composite cable that comes in the box.

Your 13" t.v. probably doesn't have component inputs. I'd wager to say that there's no way it does. So, you were using component cables on a composite input.

So, is there some sort of consummate user guide to doing all sorts of crazy stuff? I've got file sharing set up with my home network (for some reason it couldn't get through any wifi encryption, so I said fuck it and moved the router, hardlining my PS3, 360, and PC...best thing I ever did), and I know I can set up remote play with my PSP when it arrives... by the way, does the remote play allow access to shared media that the PS3 can access? Eg, if I rip a DVD to my hard drive and encode it in divX so I can stream it to my PS3, can I access it on my PS3 from my synched PS3 at any WiFi hotspot?
Are there any other cool features?
How do I set up Folding@home to kick in automagically if it is idle? And can I remote access while folding?
What's the skinny with PS3-Linux? Is there anything awesome that it can do?
And why isn't the original post a FAQ with the questions all us noobs keep asking? ;)

Act like you are going to start folding, but bush the triangle button, you should be able to handle things from there.
PS3 linux isn't that great in my opinion. Nothing is really optimized to use the SPEs (using geekbench (http://www.primatelabs.ca/geekbench/) the PS3 received pretty poor scores (http://www.primatelabs.ca/blog/2007/05/playstation-3-performance-may-2007/)), and there are no drivers for the RSX, so video performance is pretty crappy.

Also there's no excuse not to be running it on your PC whenever it's on. Unlike the PS3 version, the PC version just runs in the background and you can't even tell it's running (you continue using your system like normal). The PS3 version unfortunately has to run by itself.

Looks like they had extended the warranty on the launch systems to Feb but I didn't know. Guess I can see if Sony will work with me when I call again.
I've got the same kind of errors in the top two pictures, my text seems okay though. People said these were fake in the thread above but I've seen them too. Haven't taken my own pictures but I've seen them in Assassin's Creed and in NBA 07. Plus other graphical errors in other games too.
Someone mentions GPU overheating, which is what I think it is. Don't think I can do anything about it without opening the system so I guess I have to send it back to Sony.

You have to press the right arrow several times until you reach the last or 2nd to last page. You'll see folder for PSP content, wallpaper, and you'll see one for themes.
If you lived on my side of town (and you didn't buy it), I'd let you borrow one of mine (I have two memory card adapters, since one was given to me for free due to GS not noticing it in the pocket of the PS3 case I bought).
As for the memory card adapter, before Firmware 1.8, you could only copy from the memory card adapter to the PS3 HDD (could not copy back to memory card). Now you can copy data saves to HDD, and from HDD to memory card. Hope that helps. :)

I'm getting ready to take the plunge and buy a PS3, mainly for BLU-Ray and some 1st party titles like Ratchet and Clank and Metal Gear.
This thread has been pretty helpful and I was wondering if it would be wise to upgrade the HDD right off the bat with some games requiring a 5gb install? I plan on getting the 40gb model considering I have no use for backwards compatibility since my PS2 is a JPN model as are the games (fighters and shmups).
Also, I don't see myself downloading a ton of stuff from the PSN except for Tekken 5 DR and MK2.

Sounds like you can always switch to a new hard drive later if you need to. You probably wouldn't care about leaving more than a handful of games installed at once, so it shouldn't be too bad (and not all games need to be installed).

I don't have my Playstation 3 yet so not sure about that, but it's kind of a slow time of year I think. I check my 360 every once in a while and sometimes it's so slow there's not even a single game in the "recent releases" demo section.

I was wondering if your could resume downloads on the playstation store? The demos take a really long time for me to download and I don't like leaving this on while I'm not there.Just do background downloading for PS Store content (themes cannot be background downloaded). If you do background downloading, you can do other things on the PS3 while it's downloading. If you turn your PS3 off, sign off of PSN, etc., it will stop downloading. When you turn the PS3 back on (or sign back onto PSN), the download content will resume. The ONLY thing you cannot do in the background is install a game.

Also, I don't see myself downloading a ton of stuff from the PSN except for Tekken 5 DR and MK2.Well, having a big PS3 HDD is good, but I will say if you already have a big external HDD which can be formatted to FAT32, you can wait to upgrade the HDD. I say this because there's a system backup utility on the PS3, which can back up everything on your HDD to an external drive, then restore it after you switch HDDs. If you don't have any external HDD, then I'd recommend doing it right away. As for size, get something at least 120GB.
Do new Demos not come out very often? I have had the PS3 for 3 weeks or so now and a new demo hasn't come out since Ive had it. Condemned 2 was the first new demo then and it still is today. That's because the PS Store is currently being re-vamped and there was going to be no new content for two weeks. That's why we haven't received really anything. Check this link for the news:

That's because the PS Store is currently being re-vamped and there was going to be no new content for two weeks. That's why we haven't received really anything. Check this link for the news:
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/03/31/new-playstation-store-interface-coming-in-mid-april/
It's weird because 360 got a Turning Point and Army of Two demo (If I remember correctly). PS3 got a demo to Condemned 2 and Sega Superstars Tennis.
Wow, That's much much much better than it currently is.

A few days ago when I started up my PS3, I got a message like "database will be rebuilt" and was pretty much forced to continue. Afterward, it just restarted and everything seemed normal, until I noticed yesterday that it deleted all the custom names and descriptions I gave my videos/games to keep them organized. Is that just some periodic maintenance process or did I inadvertantly set it off? Unless it improves performance somehow, I'd like to avoid having it do that in the future because I'm crazy about having my files organized.
The strangest thing is that it reset all the video titles to what they were when I first downloaded them, so if you've put in your own name for any of your videos, you're really just giving it an alias and not changing the filename or an embedded ID tag or something. What a weird setup.

Holy sheet! I had this happen too. Just a few days ago. I starting having bad thoughts like the HDD was going out or something. Seems to be running the same except for what you mentioned. Took me good part of an hour to rename everything. The way I remember it sounded more like an error than anything else. No clue as to why it happened.

That could be a weird firmware problem.

Are downloads that slow for everyone, or just me? It's profoundly slower than files of the same size on XBL.
Also, very warm air exiting of the top rear (vertical) is normal, right? I had to move it for fear it would damage the TV.

Also, very warm air exiting of the top rear (vertical) is normal, right? I had to move it for fear it would damage the TV. :eek:I'll explain the speed of PS3 downloads:
-Near launch, downloads were pretty slow.
-Around mid Summer time, download speeds increased by a big margin (after PSN was down a few times) and were quicker than the 360 IMO. The only problem is that sometimes they got stuck.
-Around the end of 2007 (especially as PS3 users went up by a big margin), download speeds have decreased quite a bit, and now have gotten even slower due to no upgrade (I don't believe) and more PS3 users. I'm betting on the day the PS Store gets re-designed or around July, servers will get upgraded and we'll get better downloads.
I know downloads should be fast since I'm 15Mbps down and 2Mbps up, and I've watched them go down.

Don't know anything about that first one. Looks like a cheap Chinese knock off or something. Never heard about.
I just sold my Pelican adapter on ebay for about $50. Paid $10 back in November. It gets the job done on a minimal level. No HO/PO, you have to plug in a dualshock everytime you are at a menu. It's a little bit of work just to use a guitar on a ps3.
Personally, I'm waiting for reviews to come in about the TAC one I posted earlier.

My friend sent me this because I've been having troubles with my system. Basically it is a fan test that the video poster says cleans the system (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhU4_Rm0GQU)and makes the fan "sound better". Doesn't work on mine (60GB launch system) for some reason but I though I'd share it here too in case you guys can get it to work.
I didn't know the PS3 came with a jet engine. 8-)
1. Turn off PS3.
2. Flip off switch in the back.
3. HOLD the EJECT button.
4. Flip on switch in the back (while still holding eject).
5. Wait for it to stop and flip back switch off/on.

Hey guys, there IS a way to make the 60GB system do "the fan test". (http://crackle.com/c/How_To/PS3_60_Gig_Fan_Test/2248784/#ml=fi%3D%26fu%3D2383613) Going to try this as soon as I can (because my system is wonked anyway).
There is a warning below, but I think that is just for anyone who uses this for a prolonged time period. So if you do it, don't keep your PS3 upside down for long.
Also, I don't think it is an issue, but you might want to take any disc you may have in the drive out.
We would like to say that this is not recommended, and that it is unknown whether this will cause damage to your PS3. We extremely advise you not to do this if your PS3 is under warranty.
Update: It has been found that this could cause damage to your PS3 and it is recommended that you must not do this. A link is provided below.
>>>Update: Well I tried it on my launch 60GB (out of warranty) which was having some graphic issues I believe were being caused by overheating. Overheating from the dust that might have gotten into it. Anyway as soon as it got going I could see some dust shooting out once it hit the highest speed. Then I loaded up AC which was giving me the most problems and I only saw one "spike" sticking up off the ground. It disappeared after a little bit though which NEVER happened before. Usually they are all over the people and I didn't see ANY which was a shock after a good play sessions. So this might have saved me $150 and the heartache of not having my Ps3 for possibly a month. Or it could just be a fluke too.

I think I already know the answer to this, but here goes.
I have a sealed SIXAXIS that I've never used. I've been tempted to open it recently, as I've started having issues with my other controller. However, since the DualShock3 is now out are there any exchange deals or replacement plans going on? I do still have my receipt, but I'm sure it'd be too late to bring it back as I bought it long ago (after the first price drop for the 60gb). It's not super important, but it'd be nice to have the newest controller.
You can probably just chalk this up to wishful thinking, but if anyone has heard anything or has any recommendations, I'd appreciate it!
aznguyen316
04-15-2008, 10:44 AM
^^ Where did you buy it from? New sealed, wal-mart will take it back w/o a receipt, just ask for an exchange for the dual shock there since it's the same price at wal-marts, that's what I'd do.. Actually it's what I did.

Varies depending on the title. Oblivion, for example, includes the $30 Shivering Isles/Nights of the Nine expansion pack in the box, for the same price that the original release (without the expansion) used to sell for. Other games will have a different GOTY edition.

Actually, the standard PS3 version of Oblivion had Knights of the Nine on the disc (http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/rpg/theelderscrollsivoblivion/review.html). The 360 version, you had to buy. But the GOTY does include the Shivering Isles. And, hopefully, on any GOTY edition, they've ironed out the bugs.

I think it's kind of neat that the Playstation 3 seems to be the first console that actually does allow some extra content like a PC-at least with Unreal Tournament 3. Neat that Sony lets the platform be more open like that than the 100% closed 360 platform. Theoretically we might see more stuff down the line like that, a bit more PC like :)

The Sony Style credit card offer comes around pretty regularly. It used to be i think $250 off at one point, but I doubt it will ever get that high again.
Main issues to be concerned about are backwards compatibility and storage.
If you don't care about BC and won't be putting a whole lot of media on the hd, the 40gb is a good choice.
But, if you want to play the occasional ps2 game, and want more storage, the 80gb may be worth waiting for.
Also, hd capacity may be a moot issue because you can manually upgrade the hd with any 2.5" drive.
Hope it helps.:bouncy:

BC == Backwards Compatibility, specifically with PS2 games. The 40 gig will play PS1 games, but only 20/60/80 gig models can play PS2 games. Upgrading the hard drive will NOT void the warranty. And you can use any SATA 2.0 2.5" hard drive purchased from anywhere. And upgrading the hard drive will not add PS2 compatibility to a 40 gig (I think this was asked before, actually).

Also, forgot to mention that the new Dualshock3 controllers just hit the market. So if rumble is a concern, I think the first bundle to include them will be the MGS4 one (don't know of any 40gb that will). Any bundle in stores now will only have a regular Sixaxis controller that does not support vibration.
And since you mentioned mostly for blu-rays, I'd recommend taking a look at the official Sony Bluetooth Blu-Ray remote that can be had for under $20 if you look around.

Here (http://www.netblender.com/technology/bdtouch_home.asp) and here (http://gizmodo.com/377290/iphone-to-become-blu+ray-player-remote) are links to what you're referring too.
From what I understand, it doesn't let the iPhone function as a remote, it makes it more of an extension to a Blu-Ray player, providing additional functionality, though I may have missed that.

I think I have hardware issues AND firmware problems. Or it could just be one or the other effecting one another. CoD locks up when I try to change the Clan Tag, and the new MGO beta freezes my system too when I try to enter the Game ID. I hit X on either one and it just locks up, nothing appears, and no input works via the controller.
What I am thinking is that whatever part of the system that makes that keyboard overlay appear is messed up. Wish there was away to roll back the system to what it was when I first took it out of the box and re-update.
What previous console allowed it? I'm not aware of any.
I'm just being optimistic that it might happen on other consoles but way things are going the PS3 will be the 1st and last of this group.

Random question: When I first got my PS3, I was disappointed to find out that if I stopped a movie it would not load up to that point. Yesterday, I popped in Aliens on dvd and turned it off, came back to it a few hours later and it loaded in the same spot! My fiance even watched another movie which I had to take out and put aliens back in and it still loaded up to the exact spot. Is that a new feature, did I enable it somehow? firmware update?

It's had that ability for as long as I've had a PS3 (last July), but they added the ability recently to resume from where you left off even if you took out the disc.

Yes you are correct, there was a firmware update and the PS3 now saves the previous spot you were at on your DVDs.

Quick question about running a system backup-- I got an external drive fairly cheap that I'm thinking of using for a PS3 backup, but I'm wondering what the PS3 backup utility actually does:
1. Does it wipe out the drive and make an image backup, and then the drive MUST only be used on the PS3 for backups?
2. Does it make a file called "PS3BACKUP.BUP" (whatever!) that lives on the HD, but the drive can still be used for other things? (i.e., putting media files on it, or using it on a PC, or the like)
3. If it's #2 (and it makes a file), can you move that file off the external HD that you created it with? I am wondering if I can make a backup once in a while, compress it, and burn to DVD in case I need it in the future-- or does the backup have to stay on THAT specific hard drive and any attempts to move it off will corrupt it?
Thanks!
(edit to add: some more digging sounds like it's #2, and it makes an "EXPORT" folder, but still not sure if you can then move that folder off to another location for longer-term storage, and copy it back to the external HDD if you need to restore your system later)

Onkyo TX-NR905 (http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=TX-NR905&class=Receiver&p=i). Any HDMI 1.1 receiver will do though, since the PS3 is incapable of bitstreaming. The receiver doesn't have to do the decoding (though mine can), it just has to be able to handle 5.1/7.1 PCM over HDMI. Pretty much every receiver over $400 fits that bill.

Unfortunately that's a limitation of the PS3. It doesn't have a hardware scaler (and nobody bothered to write one in software), so any resolution not EXPLICITLY supported by the game is completely unavailable. If your TV doesn't natively support 720p for most games, or 1080p for a few others (mine supports neither), then you need to pay $1000+ for an external scaler to play those games in HD. Luckily, my ($2000+) receiver can convert 720p to 1080i without a problem, but my friend with the identical TV isn't so fortunate. He has to play nearly every game in 480p, because that's the highest the PS3 is capable of for non-native resolutions.
It's complete and utter bullshit.

Then you're golden. It can both decode advanced codecs (from a blu-ray player like the Panasonic BD-P30 or HD DVD player like the Toshiba HD-A35), as well as accept multichannel PCM from any player on the market (including the PS3).
My parents have one (which they use with their PS3) and are about to buy another. It's a great receiver, and there's no beating it in price/performance. Definitely the best deal around.

It's complete and utter bullshit.Sony was mostly thinking about designing the PS3 to work with LCDs/Plasmas, which is why it was ignored (And CRT HDTVs are very rare in Japan too, from what I believe).
That's part of the reason I waited to buy my HDTV after my PS3, since I wanted to get one that works great with my PS3 (and mine does too, since it does 720p great and even goes up to 1080p).
Actually, PS3 DOES have a hardware scaler; however, it only scales horizontally and it must be utilized by a developer (some developers avoid it because it does consume some memory).

Some of us went HiDef before the PS3 was ANNOUNCED. :) I was a latecomer to the game, and still got in more than 3 years before the 360 was announced. I got my THIRD HDTV right around the time the PS3 came out. :)
Besides, just because one has a 1080p set doesn't mean that said set has a decent scaler. 720p games may still look like ass. Not disparaging your set, of course, but many do not do well with non-native resolutions.
Aside from all that, having to plan the purchase of a $2-5k item based on the limitations of $400 one = LAME!

Regarding that whole 720p thing, whatever some people want to claim, if your TV doesn't support 720p, it's NOT an HDTV. It may be a TV that does high resolutions, but it is NOT an actual HDTV, as you have to support 720p and 1080i at an HD resolution to be an HDTV.

You're completely wrong. To be an HDTV, a set must be able to display content at 1035, 1080, or 1125 lines of resolution. That would be ITU-R section 500, further ratified by ATSC standard A/53. Both are based on a variety of standards set by the SMPTE (too numerous to list). 720p was added as an "alternative" resolution, when people complained about judder on fast-action live content like football. It was never intended to be widely used. HDTVs must accept a 720p signal (along with 17 other resolutions), but need not display it at that resolution, because it's not part of the standard.
You can invent whatever definition of HDTV you want, but everyone who matters disagrees with you.

No it doesn't. 720p sets are HDTVs if they're otherwise HDTVs. And it doesn't matter if it handles 720p or 1080i natively, as long as it scales it to an HD resolution. But it HAS to handle (ie accept) both, or it's not an HDTV.

Okay, experts, I've got both my PS3 and PSP, but I hit a snafu. I can connect the PS3 to the PSP directly for remote play (using the ad-hoc network connection) but it cannot find the PS3 through WiFi if I am away from home (or home and trying to connect using the "internet"). Could it be a port on my router that needs to be opened? Its a Netgear wireless, I'm not home so I don't have the router with me. Yes it does. Look up the standards. It's right there in black and white. No display at 1035, 1080 or 1125=not HD. But aside from that, even older sets such as mine DO display 720p in a HD resolution. In my case it's at 960i. But it passes through 480p on the way there. This is similar to the way many current "1080p" sets with crappy or nonexistent deinterlacers handle 1080i. They bob the 1080i down to 540p and then quadruple every pixel to get 1080p. In either case the result is shit. By your definition it's a Hi-Def picture, because the end result has over a million pixels. By mine it isn't, because it came from SD.
All that is beside the point, however. There are $40 DVD players that can upscale and deinterlace film-sourced 480i/24 content to 720p/30, 1080i/60 or 1080p/30. The $400-600 PS3 can't do this on progressive content it's CREATING on the fly--a job that is FAR easier. That's an oversight of the highest order, and it's totally unacceptable. Despite all their other fuck-ups, this is one thing that MS didn't overlook when they made their console more than a year earlier.
No matter how you slice it, sony screwed the pooch on this one.

You need to enable port forwarding. Specifically, you need to forward TCP 9293 to your PS3's IP address, which should either be set statically, or via a DHCP reservation in your router (so it always gets the same address).

The best way is to look in your router's manual. If you don't have it handy, you can find it on netgear's site. The port for remote desktop is UDP 3389, but I HIGHLY recommend you do not forward it, as that essentially puts your machine directly on the internet for remote control. Anyone who can crack your password or otherwise exploit RDP can take complete control of your machine, everything on it, as well as everything else on your network.
With a very good password--12 or more characters, using all 4 categories of characters (lowercase, uppercase, numbers, symbols)--the chances of this happening are admittedly small. But the consequences are disastrous. Better to get a router that can terminate VPN tunnels (or one that has hacked firmware available with that capability) and connect to your network via IPSec.
Slim Gatsby
04-22-2008, 05:34 PM
Would opening that put other devices on the network at risk, or just the system with remote access? Using a long string of random numbers, letters, and symbols as the password for a limited account (one with, say, the ability to view but not modify files except those created specifically by that account) for remote access, how severe of a security risk would that be?
geko29
04-22-2008, 05:55 PM
port forwarding puts the specific machine and application at some risk, in exchange for access. Usually there are other safeguards in place (PSP registration for remote play, password for windows access). There is no direct threat to other devices because of a PF setup. However, if the end device is compromised, there may be a tremendous indirect threat as a result.
If someone hacks remote play and gets into your PS3, what's the worst they can do? Watch your media, delete your save games, etc. No big deal. Damage is minimal, and limited to the contents of your PS3's hard drive.
If someone breaks remote desktop and gets into your PC, what's the worst they can do? Whatever they want, to anything they want in your house with a network connection. As I said before, the chances of someone doing this are fairly low unless you have enemies. But the consequences in that rare case are absolutely catastrophic.
Limiting the account is another step in the right direction, though I'm not sure what the usability ramifications of that are. I guess the best question to ask is, what exactly are you trying to accomplish?
Slim Gatsby

Primarily, I want to be able to access multimedia at home from my dorm, as well as be able to access assignments-in-progress that I have saved there, and, in a rare case, maybe do some work in Premiere or something remotely. If the account authorized for remote access is a restricted account that can not modify any key files or talk to other devices, simply view media, access programs, and create/save its own files, there shouldn't be much of a problem, right?

Sounds like some of the older PS2 parts in the 60gb system may have broken somehow. Just so you know, the way the PS3 has almost full backward compatibility is that it actually has a bunch of PS2 parts in it.
If it's only PS2 games not working, it's likely that one of those parts fried.

No that's not by my definition. That's really terrible if they're doing that, and I don't think that should qualify as an HDTV, since it can't actually display one of the HD resolutions.

If you're talking about games, that's NOT an easier job. Those upscaling DVD players aren't displaying true HD content, they're just running it through a chip to convert to output to an HD resolution. That's similar to what the 360 does when displaying much of anything besides 720p (or lower in some cases).
The Playstation 3 doesn't have a scaling chip like that (which would add to its cost), so any game has to be explicitly coded for a resolution, which many developers aren't going to want to do, or may not be able to do depending on how hard the engine hits the hardware. That said, 1080p on the Playstation 3 is REAL 1080p, not 720p (or lower) scaled up to 1080p like on the 360.
That's an oversight of the highest order, and it's totally unacceptable. Despite all their other fuck-ups, this is one thing that MS didn't overlook when they made their console more than a year earlier.
No matter how you slice it, sony screwed the pooch on this one.
And I've continued to pretty much disagree with this. It would have been nice had they included a scaler, but technically it does work in HD with any true HDTV (not HD monitor or whatever), and the 360 is the ONLY system with a scaler, and it would add expense to an already pricey system. Personally I don't believe it should come as a shock that you'd need a TV that has real support for all HD resolutions at some point.

ATSC needs to support 480i/p, 720p, and 1080i. If it dosen't, the thing isn't an HDTV.
As inputs yes. And they all do. Nobody's arguing that, except you apparently. ATSC says nothing about what happens to the little electrons once they get inside the magic box. Just that 18 resolutions have to be accepted at input, and at least one of them has to output with 1035, 1080, or 1125 lines of resolution. What it does with the other 17 is its own business.
No that's not by my definition. That's really terrible if they're doing that, and I don't think that should qualify as an HDTV, since it can't actually display one of the HD resolutions.
Then better than half of TVs currently on the market advertised as 768p or 1080p aren't HDTVs. If you include sets already in homes, I'd peg that number as more like 90%.
If you're talking about games, that's NOT an easier job. Those upscaling DVD players aren't displaying true HD content, they're just running it through a chip to convert to output to an HD resolution. That's similar to what the 360 does when displaying much of anything besides 720p (or lower in some cases).
It absolutely is easier, and it works just like you said. You take the output from the frame buffer, and scale it. You don't have to de-interlace it, or do a 3:2:2 pulldown or anything. Just take a static image, and make it bigger. Easy as pie. Microsoft paint can do it. Then just repeat 29 more times.
The Playstation 3 doesn't have a scaling chip like that (which would add to its cost)
The chips to do so cost almost nothing, as evidenced by their inclusion in VERY cheap consumer electronics. Besides, you always argue that a half-dozen rather complex proprietary chips only used in one type of device should cost almost nothing. What of a very simple one that's used in hundreds of millions, if not billions, of devices a year?
any game has to be explicitly coded for a resolution, which many developers aren't going to want to do, or may not be able to do depending on how hard the engine hits the hardware.
That's my point. Putting in a scaler, like they should have done, avoids all those problems. It lets people play games at the highest resolution their device supports, whether that be 720p, 768p, 1080i/p, or some goofball resolution like many monitors use. Why purposely limit the people who can see all of your games in the highest possible quality to 10% of the audience? It's retarded.
That said, 1080p on the Playstation 3 is REAL 1080p, not 720p (or lower) scaled up to 1080p like on the 360.
See that's not true either. Call of Duty 4, for example, is rendered at 600p, and upscaled by the game engine to 720p by default, or 1080p if you go into the menus and disable 720p and 1080i output. There are plenty of others that do this.
There are MORE 1080p games for the PS3, this is true. Beyond3D reports there are 4 more. This number is a bit larger if you include the games that render at 1440x1080, 1280x1080, etc etc.
However, I'm not trying to get into an inter-console pissing match here. I have and enjoy both (One 360 and three PS3s). Your previous posts have led me to believe that you have neither (and certainly not the one you're so vehemently defending now). They both have plenty of failings. But somehow pointing out the failings of one of them is verboten? A fuckup is not a fuckup unless Microsoft did it?
And I've continued to pretty much disagree with this. It would have been nice had they included a scaler, but technically it does work in HD with any true HDTV (not HD monitor or whatever)
Yes, it works at all resolutions with the 10% or so of HDTVs in the wild that are "actually HDTVs". What a huge accomplishment. Bravo.
and the 360 is the ONLY system with a scaler
One out of two sounds so much less damning when you re-phrase it as ONLY. How about I try your little spin?
Every other HD game console ever made has a scaler.
Neat how that works. The reality is there have only been two consoles released to the market capable of rendering in HD with full detail (PS2 and Xbox games had to be hobbled to run in high-res). One of them has more 1080p games, but can't scale any games. The other one can scale every single one of its games to the highest resolution supported by pretty much every display (up to 1920x1080) ever sold. Gee, I can't see why anybody would want that....
and it would add expense to an already pricey system.
So including nearly every part of a $120 machine except for the DVD drive should add almost no cost whatsoever, but including one tiny chip out of a $40 one is an exhorbitant expense? Christ on a Pony, pick a side!
To make matters even worse, the 360 doesn't have a scaling chip either. Upscaling is handled by the GPU, as it should be. So there's ZERO extra cost.
Personally I don't believe it should come as a shock that you'd need a TV that has real support for all HD resolutions at some point.
I'll agree with you here. It'd be awesome if all TVs had perfect support for every resolution, right out of the box. But the reality is we're a LONG way from that utopia. I know a LOT of people with HDTVs (aside from having three myself) from every brand under the sun (Sony, Toshiba, Samsung, Sharp, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Westinghouse, etc etc etc), and not ONE of them has absolutely perfect support for every HD resolution, though one is close.
In the meantime, I expect a $600 device to have all the capabilities of a $40 one, and then some. You apparently don't, and that's fine I guess. In the beginning the PS3 couldn't upscale DVDs, or downscale Blu-Rays. The 360 couldn't output anything in 1080p. But I guess they shouldn't have added those features because they're not important. Upscaling games isn't important either, which is why nobody's ever complained about it. Oh, wait, that's right, they HAVE...

okay guys, a couple quick Q's.
1) My bro just got a PS3, as I have one. Are saves linked to Users like they are on 360 profiles? I want to be able to play some games over at his place using my game saves.. possible? for example, games I'm currently playing: Ratchet & Clank, CoD4 MP..
2) are user profiles transferable? Can I take my user name/PSN onto his PS3 to play CoD4 or for whatever other reason. Whether this be by USB drive or some sort of retrieval online through PSN.
Thanks, more questions to come I'm sure

However, since you can download many PS3 game saves, it doesn't make a difference which profile you load them onto. There's actually an option to copy game saves directly.

Stats are on a server. I reformatted my HD and went right into playing CoD online, and it had all my stats and rank.
Only things that seems to be saved on the HD are your clan tag and name of your weapon load outs in regards to online.
It was gone when with the "blank HD" my clan tag was gone, but when I restored my system it came back.
As far as weapon load outs, I'm guessing they are also saved on some server because they were all the same as before the formating, but they didn't have names. After I restored the names returned.
>>>PS I still need help finding an e-mail/number to contact for support with this game.

To the poster who asked that question, that's only refering to Playstation 3 games if I'm not mistaken. Playstation 1 and 2 games are still region locked.
That's NOT easier. Either the CPU or the GPU are going to have to take that output and write it into video RAM at a higher resolution. That's not getting done for "free" like it is on the 360 or an upscaling DVD player. It has to be specifically coded into a piece of software, and will affect performance more than having an external piece of hardware do it (like in the 360's case).
And I'm not sure if you were saying that most TVs won't do HD resolutions...because they do. Some older tvs marketed as "HD Ready" or "HD Monitors" didn't handle every ATSC resolution, but anything marketed as an HDTV should, and as far as I'm aware does (unless like you said they're cheating by basically displaying 1080i as 1/4 the resolution on a 1080p native set.)
I'm somewhere in the middle on this. I can see the frustration of people with older sets that can't do the scaling, but I can see how Sony wouldn't want to have to include more hardware, and would think that going forward it won't be as big of an issue. Like I said, I really think anyone buying an early HD set of some sort should have known that at some point you'd probably need to be able to handle the ATSC resolutions. I know one of the reasons I waited was because the sets I was seeing didn't, and I just figured I'd need them.
Yeah, I mean I kind of agree, but then including hardware to be backwards compatible with the Playstation 2 is also cheap, and they're cheaping out on that (and for myself personally I'd much rather have that).
Why purposely limit the people who can see all of your games in the highest possible quality to 10% of the audience? It's retarded.
It's not 10% of the audience. I'd be shocked if the majority of TVs sold that do HD don't do the ATSC resolutions. Early adopters who got TVs that don't don't make up most of the market (although a lot of the early adopters of higher resolution TVs would be early adopters of the Playstation 3 I suppose...)
I'd guess that the very smallest part of the Playstation 3 audience would be people with HD monitors that don't handle 720p. I'd be shocked if they're not outnumbered both by people with HDTVs AND people trying to run it on an SDTV.
See that's not true either. Call of Duty 4, for example, is rendered at 600p, and upscaled by the game engine to 720p by default, or 1080p if you go into the menus and disable 720p and 1080i output. There are plenty of others that do this.
Even if that's true, it's still the game itself that's having to handle the conversion. It's not like a switch that can be flipped to turn it on.
Not sure how you got that idea. I've owned (FOUR) 360s since launch. And I'm defending this because I don't think you're being completely fair about this. You think this is affecting a huge percentage of people, and I just don't think it is-it's early adopters. I can understand why you'd want a scaler in this, but I don't think it's reasonable to call this a "fuckup".
Yes, it works at all resolutions with the 10% or so of HDTVs in the wild that are "actually HDTVs". What a huge accomplishment. Bravo.
That number is just bogus. This isn't 1998. Most people who own HDTVs have purchased them pretty recently, which means they avoided the whole "HD Monitor" era. And again, anyone had to expect that they would need every ATSC resolution at some point. I'm trying to not act like an ass here, but you've got to take some blame here too.
I really don't much care whether my TV or my game system is doing the scaling. If your TV has a good scaler, it shouldn't much matter (and IMO any of us who play games need to pick up a TV with a good scaler anyway, since we're going to be playing stuff at all different kinds of resolutions, plus interlaced and progressive scan, etc.). It matters for us more than some guy who's just going to watch DVDs and TV...although even there they should still go for a good scaler to be able to use whatever kind of older video hardware they want.
To make matters even worse, the 360 doesn't have a scaling chip either. Upscaling is handled by the GPU, as it should be. So there's ZERO extra cost.
Yes, it does have a separate chip. It might have since been incorporated onto the GPU or something, but it started as a physically separate chip. If I'm remembering right it's called "Ana" or something like that, and there are even pictures of it. It is NOT handled by the GPU, and even if it was, you're then wasting transistors on a scaler hardware (or wasting GPU resources) that could be used on more GPU power.
In the meantime, I expect a $600 device to have all the capabilities of a $40 one, and then some. You apparently don't, and that's fine I guess.
That's not fair. Those upscaling DVD players for one thing don't have as hard of a job to do as the chip in the 360. That thing is having to scale HD resolutions, and it's having to do it FAST. A scaler in a DVD player is only having to do 480i, and there could be some kind of lag and it wouldn't matter. Like I've said, I think that's a nice feature Microsoft added, and ideally the Playstation 3 would have it to. But I do not think it's this gigantic massive, system-wrecking problem that you think it is. You had to know when you bought that TV that future game systems might not work on it if it didn't support all HD resolutions. I'm coming from PC games too and I just expect a monitor or TV to usually be the device that's handling that sort of conversion, and I expect it to do a good job. So it's kind of a perspective thing.
In the beginning the PS3 couldn't upscale DVDs, or downscale Blu-Rays. The 360 couldn't output anything in 1080p. But I guess they shouldn't have added those features because they're not important.
No, I think it's nice they added those features, but those are all SOFTWARE issues that could be developed once and rolled out with no further increase to the system's cost. Adding a scaler chip to the Playstation 3 is HARDWARE that they'd have to keep adding, and it's doing it to an already very expensive system. IMO the priorities of having backwards compatibility, higher-end hardware, and Blu Ray were all more important places to spend transistors/money (and the Playstation 3 already had a drive that was hundreds more, and a CPU that's something like 50% larger if I'm remembering right). I totally acknowledge that that's just my perspective and not really right or wrong, but it's a decision someone had to make, and I can understand why they made it. I can sympathize with you and others with this issue. I can see how it's a mistake, and I bet there was internal discussion about it, but I just don't believe it's this huge massive gigantic, unforgivable thing...but then like I said, it's a perspective thing, and I specifically avoided earlier HD screens as I expected something like this would happen.

uncheck the 720p option in the display settings / video output settings and leave 1080i checked, and that should force the game to display in 1080i. [there was another game that had the same issue, don't remember the name] But anytime you want to force a resolution in a specific game, this is how you do it. 1081i does give a slight improvement over the 720 (or 640p) resolution.

If it isn't, mine are defective too.
I don't know where the thermal sensor for my multimeter is or I'd test it but I'm guessing the air coming out of mine is about 20 degrees F hotter than ambient.
I'm thinking the PS3 can get a lot hotter too, as the fans can speed up to be just as loud as the 360. The videos for the fan test are very interesting, very interesting indeed. According to the person who made the 40gb fan test one, if you do that test, it's like the PS3 cleans itself of dust.
That is most intriguing, since I remember having to clean my friends PS2s and their fans would sometimes be gunked up with a ton of dust, which had to be removed manually.
It sure as hell beats blowing compressed air into the PS3, like we used to have to use on the PS2s.

Today I headed down to Walgreens and picked up a prepaid VISA card. Little did I know I had to wait an hour before activating it. The time finally came (9:13PM). I then had to bring the PS3 near my PC so I can plug in the cable modem. It took over an hour moving setting around until I finally was able to connect. I then went into the PS3 store and added to my cart a bunch of Rock Band songs (10). I then was asked to enter a credit card number, I entered the prepaid VISA's number. Afterwards I downloaded the songs.
My question is what gonna happen next? Since I paid with a prepaid VISA is the total just gonna subtract from the cards balance. I just hope I don't get some bill sent to my house. This is the first time I do this kind of thing. Any help appreciated.

Anyone know where I can get an extra PS3 HD tray? The last person who owned the PS3 tried changing the HD, but warped the hell out of the screws to the point that a phillips head won't fit anymore.

I tried logging in online through the PS3, but connection failed. I did a Test Connection, and where it says gettin IP address it Fails. I recently switched from DSL to Comcast.
I have this modem (http://www.shopping.com/xGS-Motorola_Sb5100_Surfboard~NS-1~linkin_id-8001673)
Any help?
Also, If I can't log in plugging in the modem directly does that mean that if I buy a router I wont be able to log in either?

Typically, those pre-paid cards just have the amounts deducted from the available balance until the balance reaches $0. Although, the card I had for Christmas had a disclaimer on it saying that if you went over the balance and for some reason the charge went through, you would be responsible for any overages.
I don't know how they could try and do that(aside from tracking which address the item that caused the overage is sent to, if it's a physical item), but I'm sure they'd find a way.
Right now, I still have a .05 balance remaining the card I got for Christmas, but the card itself expired last month, so I lost that whole nickel.
Many of those cards have inactivity or monthly fees taken off of the total after you haven't used them for so many months. There is also typically a charge for checking your balance with some of them. Some of the WORST offenders I've seen were the Visa cards available from Wal*Mart.
I had a Vanilla Visa myself, which had a $5-7 charge over and above the cost of the card itself to activate it. It had no fees associated with it, aside from the inactivity ones after 6 months or so. I used up the balance on it LONG before the expiration date, so I definitely got my moneys worth from it.
Hope this answers your question....

Thanks for answering. You answered my question
One last thing. I have a $2.93 balance on the card. I want to get one more song, but I have to add funds with a minimum of $5.00. Right now the PS3 shows that I have $0.00 funds. What does it mean to add funds? Should I just click on add funds? Like I said I only have $2.93 on the card but I have to add funds of minimum $5.
If I click on add the $5.00 funds does that mean I am making a $5 purchase with a card that only has a $2.93 balance?
It says add funds to wallet with the minimum being $5.00. Does that mean that I will add funds to the PS3 wallet? Since I am making a purchase of $1.99 and the card has enough to cover that. Only if I spend the remaining funds in the PS3 wallet then I would be spending money that I dont have.

Are you sure you have to add funds first?
When I bought the Warhawk booster packs it let me pay the exact amount.

yeah I d/l the CoD4 map pack and just paid for it. Just don't add funds, but rather just add what you want into your cart and basically buy what you put in, rather than having a balance.. not sure if it works for everything like RB but worked like this for me.

Just remember that the minimum charge is still $5 even when you use the exact deduction method. So, if your wallet is empty and you're only buying something cheap like a Rock Band song, you'll end up with a couple bucks left in your wallet for next time. Not a huge deal, but I could see how it could be annoying if you were pennies short for something.

Super NOOB question but I just want to be careful. Anyway, I was reading the manual and it said that I should connect all audio and video cables before connecting the power cables. I was too excited and connected the power first and then the audio and video cables and I'm wondering if there's anything bad about doing that? And did anybody else do the same thing I did (If they can even remember)? Thanks in advance.

It shouldn't do any harm to your system, as I've been switching my HDMI cable from my PS3 to my 360 at least once a day and nothing's come of it for the year, nearly, that I've had my PS3.

I burnt out the AV ports on my tv by plugging and unplugging the composite cables I had my PS2 hooked up to my tv with from them many, many times, Frisky.
So, be careful when doing that with the PS3 and 360, since I'm sure you can also burn out the HDMI ports if you're doing it often enough.

Do you mean they physically wore out? I guess that could happen (too bad though :-( ) but electrically they shouldn't care.
So it doesn't matter whether the audio and video cables or the power cables are connected first then, right? I'm just wondering why the manual states that with a caution.

It won't do anything to your system, but if you system ever died and you happened to say you did that, it would void your warranty because you didn't follow their operating instructions. Companies always have holes so that they can get out of honoring their warranties.

Might have something to do with static electricity, or who knows what? Anyway it's something I'd try to do if you remember to, but I wouldn't worry if you forget. Probably not something that's going to hurt it 99% of the time.

I played through the game on the lowest difficulty and got through it in just under 12 hours. I picked up about 80% of the treasure items, too.
It's an exceptional game, but I don't know how anyone could get 40 hours out of it...unless they're playing through the entire game on every difficulty level.

I played through it on the default difficulty and collected about 50% of the treasures and going through using different weapons to get the achievements.. took me about 8.5 hours one playthrough and this is me dying quite a few times and not running through it + watching cut scenes. The game keeps track of your playtime. This game was GREAT, loved (almost) every bit of it, but I was disappointed in the length. I guess it's okay though I enjoyed it enough.

Supposed to be spring 08, though they have been available for a while in select markets (usually around military bases). Maybe before summer.

That's what I figured but it won't let me. I can click on the user name. Hit Triangle for Options. Then the only choice i have is information. From there I can only change the name or the smiling face logo to something else. Is there some sort of delete function on the keyboard when changing the username?

Try making another profile.
Mine shows "Delete" as an option, but I have two profiles on my system.
Ohh... I just had another thought. I think there is a "Restore System" option somewhere, maybe that will do it. (I'm updating my firmware right this second or I'd check and tell you exactly where it is.)
I just checked, it's "Settings >> System Settings >> Restore PS3 System"
That's supposed to reset everything to default and format the hard drive.

The PS3 doesn't have great codecs for streaming, so not everything will work. When worse comes to worse, try transferring them over manually and see if that works.

Oh well. 360 is the much better streaming platform. Perhaps I'll get on that XBMC project soon.
Quick question, I got a 40 gig and have Devil May Cry 4 and Heavenly Sword game data installed with about 4834 mb and 2048 mb, respectively, along with the Iron Man demo. I checked the system information and it says 22/37 gigs of free space left. Does the PS3 use some of the hard drive for its own purposes? Because two games and a demo shouldn't take up 15 gigs of space, right?

360 is about leaving your computer on and streaming media from a computer.
PS3 is about having a massive HDD storing all your media (not really streaming).
Since I'm more of a PS3 person, I basically have all my music and videos on my PS3 HDD, and greatly prefer that method (not a fan of streaming).
Neither way is really better than the other IMO, just preference.

Indeed. But since I have no leads on cheap 2.5" drives, and the PS3 doesn't like any of them anyways, I suppose the XMBC route will be the one I take.
I finally got the drive to work, but even though I double-checked everything, the files will not play.

It probably says somewhere earlier in this thread, but yeah, I think some of it is used by the system. I remember the 20GB version not having much more free space on it than the X-Box 360 does.

PS2 BC is one of those things you think you want, but it's one of those things you'll barely use if you have a nice HDTV (because the upscaling just isn't all that great overall and it's kind of a pain playing PS2 games on PS3 IMO, having to re-connect the controller, re-sign on PSN after the game and so on). For those who don't own a PS2, I could see it being important.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I did not see it recently.
I am in the market for a PS3, but thought I would wait for the MGS4 bundle (not the limited edition 40 gb, but the 80gb with the dualshock and regular edition MGS4). Originally, I thought it would be released in May, but here I am, at the end of May, and I still can't preorder the bundle on Amazon. What the fuck is going on here?
Can someone point me to an official word as to when the 80 gb MGS4 bundle will be released? Is it expected to be in limited quantities so that there will be trouble finding it (a la Wii)??
