LOS ANGELES -

If the best Sony has to offer is a Darth Vader-branded PlayStation Portable, it may be in trouble.

Having already announced its big news July 9 — a $100 price drop on the PlayStation 3 — Sony (nyse: SNE - news - people )'s event at the E3 video game convention Wednesday didn't leave room for many surprises.

However, Sony made a point of picking a hardware fight with Nintendo (other-otc: NTDOY - news - people ) on the portable front. Sony redesigned its PlayStation Portable into a slimmer shape, offered two new colors (one silver, and one etched with Star Wars' Darth Vader) and gave it the ability to export video to high-definition televisions, all to better compete with Nintendo's DS. Nintendo sells about 423,000 portable devices per month, while Sony sells only 221,000, according to NPD.

Sony executives made it clear that they know they need to do more than lower prices to woo consumers back to its flagging video game brand. Tepid audience response at Wednesday's event suggests the company hasn't yet done enough.

“Our accomplishments bring no guarantees for the future,” said Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton. “We want to earn each and every one of our customers.” While Monday's price cut is already reaping rewards — Tretton said sales of the just-reduced PS3 have already doubled at the company's top five retailers — it won't juice sales enough to give the company the “installed base” that it wants.

Sony tried to impress its bread and butter customers — hard-core gamers — with a slew of exclusive violent action games from third-party publishers and Sony's in-house studios. Footage of gruesome knife battles in Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4 drew cheers, but it might be too little too late: the game will be released later than expected in early 2008.

The company can't promise PS3 owners exclusive access to Grand Theft Auto 4 from Take-Two Interactive (nasdaq: TTWO - news - people ) — it will appear on Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people )'s Xbox 360 as well — so Sony's taking a stab at creating a game called Infamous, which features a similar style of play known as the “emergent gaming sandbox.”

Price cuts and new colors on hardware will only go so far to help Sony catch up to Nintendo, which is moving to take an even bigger lead. Earlier on Wednesday at Nintendo's E3 event, the company attempted to prove that it could expand upon its successful strategy of appealing to nontraditional gamers, while at the same time encroaching on Sony's hard-core gamer demographic.

Nintendo aims to get traditional gamers interested in the Wii with a new gun-shaped controller and a few “first-person shooter” games. For everyone else, Nintendo intends to capitalize on the Wii's motion-sensing features by selling a new suite of health-conscious games called Wii Fit. It requires the purchase of a floor-pad controller that looks a lot like a bathroom scale.

Nintendo Is Star of E3 Show as Rivals Scramble to Catch Up

Triple confirmed by USA Today

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/gaming/2007-07-11-wii-balance-board_N.htm

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Nintendo, which helped create today's video-game industry more than 20 years ago, had to change its game plan quickly to avoid being overwhelmed in the home-console wars.

Now Nintendo and its Wii are riding the biggest wave of success at the E3 game summit, overshadowing tech giants Microsoft and Sony and their more powerful entries.

Love is over guys, time to retire.

Personally I was pretty bored with the Sony conference, but they didn't show any of the PS3 exclusives I'm looking forward to. However, I would think that most people would consider Sony's press conference the best since they really did focus on a wide variety of games for longer then anyone else.

I think the one - two punch of dropping the price on the system and coming out with a crazy killzone 2 trailer ( which Forbes didnt even mention) will help sell a lot of consoles.

while I will be picking a ps3 up in the near future due to the pricedrop, I really don't think the $100 is enough to get the amount of systems sold to approach nintendo or msft in sales at this current time. I am sorry, but $500 is still a big purchase for the avg consumer to spend on a video game machine.

What are you talking about? MS' conference was awesome! How often do you get to see the head of a division at Microsoft make such an ass of himself? I thought watching Peter Moore play Rock Band was good the first time. When I saw it on repeat on G4 today, I thought "damn, that was worse than I thought it was".

I can't believe they thought it would be a good idea to show Moore playing that game. It was just sad.

That is actually quite sad. I don't see how anyone can honestly think Nintendo had a better show than Sony that is actually into gaming. These "mainstrean" media outlets probably feel this way since Nintendo is catering to them, the so called "non-gamer".

Sony, which previously held events that featured such concert acts as Macy Gray and Beck, settled for a low-key sushi shindig this year.

Apparently they think that was Sony's entire show.

As an owner of both a PS3 and a Wii I really think the mass media just latches onto the frontrunner at the moment. Since Nintendo is kicking everyone's ass in sales, the media just hops onto the bandwagon. The Nintendo keynote barely showed any gameplay videos and aside from giving a few dates, told us very little we didn't already know.

I honestly don't understand how anyone can yawn after seeing the Killzone 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4 trailers.

Articles like you guys posted kill me. I bought a PS3 on Tuesday and after seeing Sony's conference yesterday it eliminated any doubts I was having about the purchase. Nintendo just continues to brainwash mainstream press, which may eventually lead to hardcore gaming being doomed. I'll be honest that I did like the Nintendo press conference better than the MS one, mostly because they announced Mario Kart Wii.

What does piss me off is that next to no one knew about Eyetoy Kinetic or some fitness game Xbox had last gen, which Nintendo appears to be copying. Oh course, the mass market will eat up Wii Fit, and act like Nintendo created the first fitness game and call everything a rip off. Also, I could see the mass market going crazy over the new blaster on Wii, saying it's all new, when it's basically the same as Time Crisis and House of the Dead (which have been out longer). I wouldn't be surprised if people dismiss Time Crisis 4 as a way to copy cat Nintendo.

Its a f-ing press conference for "journalists", who shouldn't be cheering and shouting like some rock concert but rather taking notes and observing. Its funny that for all the comments about E3 being low key, most of them are related to journalists complaining that the junket train isn't as sweet as in the past.

In watching the conferences myself on G4, I was started to wonder why I need journalists at all to filter this info.

Man that Article is full of crap,

Sony Makes Strides

Sony was no slouch at E3 either. The company began its event at Sony's Culver City, Calif., studios with a presentation from President and CEO Jack Tretton—or more precisely his avatar. The virtual Tretton talked up the company's PlayStation Home, a 3D virtual community similar to Second Life. "The interactive content-sharing features of PlayStation Home, combined with the library of innovative downloadable games and entertainment, truly push the boundaries of our customer's imaginations and deliver on the promise of an integrated content and community service," said Tretton, in a press release. Users will be able to launch multiplayer online games at home, and watch Blu-ray discs.

Sony also unveiled a new game, Haze, which is similar to Microsoft's popular Halo in many ways, including the name.

With the flurry of new games and products, it's not clear which company will be the most successful console maker in the years ahead. Can Nintendo keep up its astonishing momentum? Can Sony and Microsoft fight back effectively? Certainly, the battle will be waged for a long time. Perhaps there's only one clear winner who will emerge from this year's E3: the growing community of gamers.

We all know they drew Yawns, competitor? more like scrambling to catch up lols...

Sure I care, I plan on getting a PS3 someday. I just was hoping to see at least one of the exclusives I was looking forward to (Lair, LA Noir, Final Fantasy VS XIII, and Heavy Rain). Pretty much everything other major game they showed I either would rather have the 360 or PC version (UT3, RE5, CoD4), or don't care about (MGS, Killzone).
Of course, overall Sony had the best conference with their focus on the games, but it certainly wasn't my favorite (much like Return of the Jedi is my favorite Star Wars film, but I know Empire is the best).

I dont think it's a raging hard on, i think it's the fact that the same people always come in and try to knock the system and it's annoying.

I have barely EVER posted in the Wii forum and honestly I don't care too much for my Wii right now at all. If it wasn't for Resident Evil 4 (old game) I wouldn't have even played it in the last 2 months. Do you see me posting in the Wii forums about how the system is Doomed?

I love my 360, but question some of the games sometimes and thought that the overall feel of the conference sucked for them, but all i said in those forums was "that was a weak show" or something to that degree.

It is not about having a raging hard on for the system it is the fact that people coming in here for no other reason than to make your silly posts about how PS3 is DOOMED! If you honestly believe that Sony is going to bow out and there will be no PS4 your fucking insane.

Ahem.

Anyway, while I may agree that Sony had the best conference out of the three (though it's an understatement to call that faint praise), I think the point that everyone here is missing is that the mainstream media is so interested in Nintendo's product. No, the Forbes correspondant probably couldn't take any of us in Street Fighter, but yeah, he may know something about how to diagnose a market that Random Internet Asshole #11397 does not. There could be a valid discussion about that. Or that what was covered and what wasn't probably speaks volumes about what the "mainstream" is interested in. But by all means, let's return to such bon mots as "Killzone is the greatest game ever!"

I finally got to watch all 3 of the press conferences...IMO, there wasn't a winner as they all were rather poorly presented...WTF was the sony guy doing going on and on how nervous he was...all three of them were just showing us updated trailers of games we already knew about...there wasn't a single thing showed, that made me go holy shit...yes the killzone trailer looked awsome, as did mgs4...but neither are due this year, and neither were really anymore impressive then prior trailers we have seen for the games

I was hoping someone else would talk, but he is the head of SCEA anyway.

it's called humility from getting their asses whooped by a public perception of arrogance.

doesn't matter though, Nintendo wins unanimously.

these 3 sources know nothing about the games industry, all comepeting against one another for a ever so popular negative Sony story... and they barely reviewed most of the products that were intruduced at the show...

Nintendo had a piss-poor showing, and to be honest, the Wii hasn't been interesting in several months. Scrapping Wi-Fi from Metroid Prime 3 was a horrible mistake, and leaving Brawl out of the show, well, big mistake.

it's ok, Metroid Prime 3 will suck ass anyway just like the first 2. Wii Fit and the plastic moulded zapper is where itz at!

Watching The Loop on AOTS right now. Out of the 3 guys, 2 say Sony had the best showing, and 1 said MS did.

All 3 agree Nintendo lost sight of their hardcore gamer crowd this E3.

Sorry, just felt like being a reverse Dr Mario Kart for a bit.
