View Full Version : New PSP owner, must have cheap games

I'm picking up a PSP from Craigslist today for pretty cheap but I need some games for it. Not looking to spend a lot, so probably some older games that are a must buy for under $25. Any suggestions besides sports games welcome.
Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror
Mega Man Powered Up

Daxter, Syphon Filter, Hot Shots Golf, are all $15 at Best Buy.
Wipeout Pure is $10 used or less most places. Mega Man Powered Up and Mega Man Maverick Hunter X are both around $15 used.
I highly reccomend Daxter if you're a fan of platformers. Crush is still $30 but it's the best game on the system, imo.

That's just it. We don't have one. They keep coming in going every couple of weeks. Like when people get a PSP, they come here asking what to get, then the thread tanks, and a new one arrives. We can always sticky your thread I guess.
Oh and just keep your eye out for cheap shit. Constantly check Deals forum because us PSP gamers have scored insane deals over the past year.

Ok, sorry, thought you were hinting that I should check elsewhere.
It always seems that PSP games drop in price pretty fast so I'm hoping to get a good collection going with spending minimal money.

What kinds of games do you like? Off the top of my head:
-Syphon Filter-Check out IGN's review. It's amazing, one of the best games I played last year.
-Metal Gear Acid 1 and 2-really great if you like strategy type games. Interesting in that they're strategy games with stealth.
-Ridge Racer-best racing game I've played in years.
-the collections like Sega Genesis Collection and EA Replay are cool.
Tons of other games too, plus I prefer to buy the Playstation Portable version of a game if it's available on multiple systems.

No one has mentioned the first Grand Theft Auto? What about that Mercury game (I don't know what the title is....); I heard that game was good.

Well the PSP I'm getting from some guy and it includes GTA: LCS, Hot Shots, Twisted Metal, and Ridge Racer. I really don't care for racing games, but the whole package is only costing me $100 so I didn't complain.
I like RPGs, puzzle, action, platformers and anything that could be pick up and play so I can get some gaming in at work but hide it if I need to.

I plan to, is it hard to find now that it is the downgrader for firmware or was that a short-lived rush on the game?

Good point about Grand Theft Auto. It was a lot better than the first two 3D games (I never played the San Andreas). I quit playing eventually though because it just got too disgusting for me. I wish they'd clean up the controls even more than have you play a GOOD guy.
I like RPGs, puzzle, action, platformers and anything that could be pick up and play so I can get some gaming in at work but hide it if I need to.
What? I don't know anything about that! ;) (Looks at PSP under desk :D )
That new Tales game is supposed to be good if you like those. I've never been a fan, but this one actually looks kind of good from the previews I saw. You'd probably like the Metal Gear Acid games too-strategy, not RPGs, but you'd probably get into them once you "get" the system (it has a bit of a learning curve since it's so weird compared to anything else, but it's got really great gameplay).
Polopocrios was kind of a fun traditional Japanese RPG, and there are a bunch of others, and Diablo-esque games too.
Actually there's even an Elder Scrolls game that was reviewed well, but it sounds like it's been simplified since obviously the full Oblivion would need more than the PS2 level of power.
And definietly pick up Syphon Filter (and probably Daxter) for $15 each at Best Buy, and don't miss the Toy's R Us clearenced games!

I am getting Polopocrois from Goozex, I'm looking forward to that. I love Diablo like games so I am looking to get Untold Legends. Any other games besides the sequal that is that style?
I will probably pick up Lumines 2 from the Toys R Us clearance, but I want to get the first one as well. Are they both pretty much identical or is it worth getting both?

Exit (puzzle platformer, generally about $10 or so at most places)
WTF ($15 at EB/GS. It's a fun, quirky take on the minigame genre)
Daxter
Loco Roco (Was on sale for $10 at one point, though I'm not sure what's happened to it price-wise since then)
Gunpey ($10 at BB last time I checked. It's fun, but harder to get into than Lumines)

Ultimate Ghouls and Ghosts... it always gets overlooked. It's such a great visual feast with classic gameplay for under $20.

They seemed pretty much the same to me. I didn't like the sequels music, though that's just personal preference. I actually like a lot of the groups they advertise on the back, but I wouldn't even be able to get far enough into the game to get to them.
There's probably too many Diablo-esque games to list. Off the top of my head-beyond Untold Legends, there's Dungeon Siege, Neo Pets, the Oblivion spin off, that dungeon creator game that just came out (got a pretty good review I think, but I don't know what it's called), and I liked Justice League Heroes, though it's very linear (which I actually liked versus the phony exploration in most of these) and it doesn't have the typical item management-but I liked it much more than the very generic Untold Legends. I think there's more than those too

Yeah, the MGA games are fantastic. I was never bored by either one, which is saying something. Haven't played Daxter yet (just got it last week). Sega Genesis Collection and EA Replay are two of the best collections ever.
Loco Roco looks totally awesome, but I haven't played it yet (got it last year, but I'm saving it as I think I'm going to love it.)
Of course We Love Katamari is good-not as good as the original, but still fun. Tons more I'm forgetting.
Don't forget Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror! It's amazing. I like it better than Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, and I liked that. IGN called it the PSP's killer app, and it is. It's as high-end, well produced, and good looking as the best PS2/X-Box games. Geez, the music was done by Mark Snow, and the whole thing is that caliber.
Personally I wouldn't recommend those MegaMan games, because the PS2 Megaman collections are better deals, and I prefer the 2D art. They're not BAD of course, just kind of redundant.
Hopefully I didn't oversell Polopocrois. You've played it before, and the gameplay is VERY basic traditional JRPG, but for some reason I found it kind of charming. I actually beat it, and I'm not able to stomach most Japanese RPGs anymore, so that's probagly saying something. (I've just seen everything too many times to play through a lot of games anymore. And even though I've seen Polopocrios's gameplay, I still have a soft spot for it for some reason. I couldn't make it through Final Fantasy 3 on the DS, but played that pretty much straight through.)
I just got the demo for Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow, and it's looking to be awesome too. What's scary is those games are still being underclocked. If they (hopefully) do a sequel, they can turn the system clock up 50%...scary.

Lummy 2 has most of the skins of the first, barring a few licensed songs (and arguably the best, Shinin') as well as better presentation, more skins, and more modes. I would just get the second.

untold legends 2 is a lot better then the first one. I played the 2nd one probally for good 30 + hours but only 2 to 3 on the first one (couldnt stand the first one)
lumines is dying down. Up north in kendaville they got greatest hits of the game for 12.99 sealed
neopets is a fun game but its a pure rip off of untold + they have level caps . meaning you just cant stat build and sort of gets boring fast.

Games always require and ship with the newest firmware at the time of their manufacture. When you put the disc in, in addition to displaying the title screen for the game, on that same section it'll show the firmware update. Or if you launch the game and it needs to be updated, it'll prompt you to do the update.
Alternatively you can update it over Wifi from the system update menu, or download firmware through the Playstation 3, or from a computer.
You have to have the system plugged in to be able to update, to prevent power loss during the update (which could fry the system's firmware).
This is all a really complicated explanation for something that's super simple
