In the midst of E3 (http://e3.1up.com/), rumble patent holding company Immersion issued a press release stating they had begun licensing their technology to third-party peripheral creators Hori and Katana to produce accessories with rumble on consoles and handhelds. Specifically, Katana will start releasing rumble controllers for PlayStation 3, starting in September.
So far, Sony has not announced a rumble-enhanced Sixaxis controller for PS3, but if a third party is delivering one this September, a first-party edition seems pretty likely.

Maybe this isn't the right place to ask buuuut:
Is the actual fact that the controllers rumble what Immersion has a patent on or is it the way they do it? Can't Hori or whoever figure out a new way to rumble the contollers and skip licensing?

I believe it's the actual method of rumble that's what got Sony into trouble in the first place. They could develop new methods, but that could probably just end up costing more in time, money, and research than it would be worth it just to license it and be done with it.

This needs to happen soon .
Hopefully it'll add the missing weight to the controllers .

SIXAXIS Rumble Confirmed By SCEA Employee (http://kotaku.com/gaming/it.s-real/sixaxis-rumble-confirmed-by-scea-employee-277564.php)
The release of a force-feedback SIXAXIS is a rumor that has been rumbling about for some time (har-har). Lawsuits later, Sony was forced to remove the rumble from their controller and have apparently reinstated it. Today, a Sony Computer Entertainment employee confirmed directly to me that the SIXAXIS with rumble is coming. Nothing like getting something that's been taken away!

I would factor the timing of this into my decision, but I guess its not a big deal... I will have to get a replacement controller at some point, so whether the DualShock or the DualShockLess comes with the console is pretty irrelevant.

wow.. sony is so... unbelievable.
first, they say that nobody wants rumble and that it does not contribute to gameplay and now the confirm it, because everybody wants it.
interessting strategie.

I wonder if a new "rumble-enabled" Sony controller would come along with a redesign in the form department. I liked the DualShock 2, but since Sony wants more trigger like controls for the PS3, I think it's time to start over, form-wise.

I posted not too long ago a blurb about a new PS3 controller with offset analog sticks, similar to the 360 and gamecube controllers. Others also posted about how in the Haze video described above the controller is actually blurred out, but you can still see it move as it rumbles.
Rumble is coming, but I'm actually hoping they make a completely new controller design with all the modern ergonomics information.

Do you mean the photoshopped Dual Shock 2?
