And Denounces the new E3
Konami's E3 press conference may have been disappointing from an announcement perspective -- the Silent Hill 5 reveal was nothing more than "duh" -- but the company wasn't there to blow us away with anything but the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots trailer, courtesy of series creator Hideo Kojima.
When Kojima spoke at the Sony conference earlier in the day, he appeared alongside a translator. That's typical. What happened at Konami, however, was not. Kojima took to the stage by himself and gave a short speech completely in English, where he described the process of arriving at this year's E3. Initially, he was told not to appear by friends because the show had been downgraded, but changed his mind.
Why? Because he'd apparently met a number of good friends while attending E3 and thought the show was a worldwide "festival" for games. Following that, Kojima essentially said in no uncertain terms that the new E3 is a complete bust. He wasn't kind, seeming to imply he only came as a courtesy -- not because he likes the new E3.
In fact, Kojima asked for a return to the old E3. Will it happen? Sorry, Hideo, probably not.

There is always TGS in his home country. Parties are nice and all, but the old E3 was a waste as far as dev resources and raw monies that had to be spent on it.

He's probably pissed that major mass media outlets are making a huge deal of wiifit and barely a peep about MGS4.
Which is expected because your average joe could careless about MGS.
Just a guess though.

Why do you need Dig Jellly there? There are plenty of other boobies at Tecmo.. WHEN IT WAS THE OLD E3!

I think this year E3 is better might not be as fun but better. Yes we don't have as many companies, or games. But before it was a madhouse. We're getting lots of great interviews, and more details on games. Because people can hear each other.
Before game videos were someone holding a handycam while someone else played. I remember watching shaky dark videos where you couldn't really here the audio. We also only got some details what the person could remember from playing the demo + a short interview with a PR person about the game. Now were getting great videos straight from the source. And great interviews, since instead of trying to hear someone talk over a giant show. They're setting up appointments.

If E3 sucks, it's because all three companies were disappointing. They should have just put Chewbacca on stage playing his spinach diarrhea-colored 360 while standing on the Roll 'N Rocker (http://www.nesplayer.com/database/accessories/rollnrocker.htm) II/Nintendo Balance Board™ to save everyone some time.

I'm with Kojima.
This is the worst E3 I've ever seen, and I've followed them since the start.
Graystone?
I feel it should be about the fun, about the excitement it stirs.
This was like eating Cinnamon Toast Crunch after not having it for a few months.
Good, but eh.

It also sounds like it may be his last for a while. This is going to be the final metal gear "solid" game. I would be pissed if I went out with a wimper.

eh you know how that goes he may be dne with snakes story but he could easily do a side story with any of the other characters or go back and do prequels. but yeah considering how much crap he got for mgs2 and as i recall he was pissed alot of people hated all the cutscenes ( i know i did) he could just be burnt out on the franchise. id like to see what other things he could come up with.

Now do you mean fun as in the news, and game releases we hear about?
I was speaking about the fact that it might not be as much fun for those attending.

Well then he should make sure TGS is more of a "festival".
The new E3 works better as a press conference, but Kojima is right it doesn't have the excitement of the crazy-out-of-hand festival that E3 had become.
All things must pass.

Kojima says that because he isn't fronting the ginormous bill for the E3 events ... its easy to talk sheet if you aren't the one paying

"I need a shirt! Gimme a shiiiirt~!"
I remember when E3 came around, everyone was fired up with excitement and gossiping about all the new shit that was announced and coming soon.
This year felt more like a "meh." While there was quite a few cool things, nothing really stood out as being completely awesome. Remember how stoked everyone was when Smash Bros. Brawl was revealed? Especially with Solid Snake being a character? How about when the PlayStation 3's retail price was announced and Riiiiiidge Racer?
This year left a LOT to be desired. It no longer has that razzle dazzle that other events in previous years had.

... and I couldn't agree more with Kojima.
The new version of E3 gives the industry an excuse not to try very hard. This years show is proof of that.

Try hard? What is it they need to try hard to do? What will spending milions on fancy booths and booth babes accomplish to make our games better?

Makes up for any shitty games that show up at E3.

I like this new E3 better actually. The interviews and previews are much more in depth then before. We are getting footage that is actually good. We will be playing most of the games shown in just a few months.
