Sony says that, but it's coming. Just like a price drop, they can never officially announce new hardware functionality until it's released due to people not buying the system in order to wait for the next hardware.
For example, I know a lot of people waiting for the 65nm hardware revision on the 360.

not gonna bother with 360

The only problem with the 20GB is the lack of Wi-fi and the other memory card slots. If you're ok without Wi-fi, go find a nice used 20GB like I did.

Remember that you can always buy an off the shelf Wireless Bridge to use with the PS3, it's basically the same thing.
The PS3 has always been a slightly more open platform than the 360, you don't need Sony brand stuff to enhance it. Another example is that any bluetooth headset will work with voice chat.

I'm waiting on Warhawk so I can use the headset bundled with the game :-P

Heh, yeah. I'm planning to get the retail Warhawk for the same reason, kill to birds with one stone in a way.
SOCOM Confrontation will have the same setup, download online, or buy in store with headset.
What's interesting is that the bundled headsets are actually good if I've read correctly. They're normal bluetooth headsets, Sony brand. Sturdy solid state device instead of a flimsy headset.

Hi guys,
I was wondering with the 60gb model; everyone is saying to buy now for the EE chip... but I was wondering if in the future with new firmwares.. do you think Sony will disable the EE chip and force all PS3's to rely on software emulation?? If that is the case then there would not be a real good reason to buy the 60 gb now, would there?
Please help me with this because I am not sure if I should get the PS3 now because of the "rumors" and also $500 is a lot to cough up.... However the EE chip is pretty important in my opinion but if they disable it down the line I would be worried about buying a system now...
Also does anyone know what the compatibility rate of the emulation software is? Would I be able to play obscure titles like the Shin Megami Tensei series??
Thank you
happy

It would just be a stupid move to disable the EE chip. They may give the option to use software emulation since that may do a better upscaling job for some games, but why disable the EE when it is already in systems?
Also SMT is hardly obscure in the big picture, my understanding is that it's up there near FF and DQ in Japan.

No one knows Anarchy. We don't really have the numbers on the amount of consoles out on shelves. I really doubt it'll be sold out in a month if the rumors have quite a lot of units on shelves are true.

I'm planning on using it with my phone as well as the PS3
I'll probably end up buying a hard copy of Socom as well, since I like seeing the games I own on a shelf and would hate DL'ing it again if something were to happen to my PS3 or I upgrade the HD down the line

That's my plan, as well.
If the 2-3 million 60 GBs in stock is anywhere close to the truth, there's no reason to panic about it selling out in a few weeks.

does best buy rewardzone certs apply towards PS3? If thats the case I might have to get the 60GB PS3 with the $120 certs from the movie gift card deal. You guys think about $415 after tax is a good deal for a while or will there be some sort of a deal sometime soon? I'll be taking some flak for this from the mrs since I just bought the Wii last month and havent played it since the first day.
All 60GB out now has the EE engine right? I have way too many PS2 games and dont want to lose the capability to play them on the PS3.

This is my problem as well. If I can sell the PStwo I have for like $80 or so it will offset some of the costs of the PS3. I don't want to give up Guitar Hero I, II and Rocks the 80s though. This whole situation blows - I feel like $500 is a ripoff especially since I won't be buying any games for it but if I wait there's no EE included which would be a very very nice feature. Plus, I'm still not 100% clear on how the PS3 operates on a 480i/p/1080i HDTV.

Mine works just fine on my 1080i TV. You can set the video mode in the menu, but you'll need to pick up either an HDMI or Component cables to get it. By default mine set to 480i, but I just went in and set it 1080i and haven't had an issue.
I think people get confused and think they need to run it at 1080p; that's not the case, it's just that the PS3 will natively support 1080p off the actual hardware (unlike the software in the 360).

So you get blu-ray in 1080i as well as (most) games? I know Resistance and a few other games only supported 720p so those will get downgraded to 480p on a TV that doesn't support 720 but I want to be sure that most everything displays properly. I've got an HDMI connection (and component) so that shouldn't be an issue...

We have a 42" TV that does not support 720p, as well as a 32" that does. I've been using the PS3 primarily on the 32" TV for this very reason. I've lost all hope that this will be addressed by Sony. :(
FWIW any game/movie that supports 1080i will be fine, and PS2 games/DVDs upscale to 1080i. And I believe all Blu-Ray movies are 1080i. The problem lies in the PS3 games that only support 480p/720p.
For reference, here's the list of 1080i/p games:

Holy shit that list of non-1080i games is huge. Count me out. I'll buy a PS3 when I get a new TV... in 2010 or so.

Just got my PS3 few weeks ago and wow, I didn't even know about this issue. Looks like I'll have to be mindful when buying PS3 games. I have an old CRT HDTV that doesn't accept 720p. No wonder when I tried running Heavenly Sword demo last night, my TV displayed only 480p.
Kinda ironic that Sony boasted about "True HD." But included neither HDMI nor component cable in the box. And now no upconversion for native 720p games.
At least I can still watch Blu-ray movies.

That was my plan, but my willpower is weak. And I do have the secondary TV that I can use. It's still rediculous that this problem exists, though.

Those are mostly launch window games and demos. The actual releases will have 1080i support unless the devs were lazy and didn't take advantage of the scaler.
basically, anything coming out from now on, barring some demos I guess, will have 1080i support. They aren't going to fix the ones that don't support it, so you would be waiting a long time ;)

Interestingly enough, on my cousin's CRT 480/1080 only TV, 720p games (like Resistance) upscale to 1080 thanks to the TV itself.

Yep - That's the reason I bought when the price dropped and the announcement was made. I would have waited otherwise. It's not a bad machine it's just, and this is the cheap ass portion of me speaking, I really don't see anything out that looks like it's worth more than $30 in games. I figure they'll drop soon enough to the Greatest Hits level.
Some of the online games are pretty good, though, and for $5-10 the price is right.

I'm still in the same boat. Part of me says "go get it, they offer 5 free Blu-Ray Movies right now" and the other part of me keeps saying to wait, there's no games that appeal to me right now and waiting another year or so would drive the price down and by then Blu-Ray's (if they're still around ;)) should have dropped to the price of DVD's. I have $150 Best Buy credit, if they happen to post a bundle with a game or extra controller, movies...etc. I may bite.
The price drop, EE, and 6 blu-rays (via amazon's promo) was enough for me. :)

just bit the bullet and bought one, the 60GB version, these are guaranteed to have the EE chip in it right? Did they make any 60GB models without the EE chip? The back of the box had game pictures for Lair, heavenly Sword and etc on it.

There have been no reports of 60GB consoles having problems with PS2 software as of yet, so it's safe to assume all 60GB consoles have the EE.

Its really hard to come up with reasons for such a thing being true, but heres my shot:
- We want to move to one 80 GB model at $500, so we don't look QUITE as stupid right next to the Elite at almost the same price point.
- But if we just out and release the 80 GB model at $500, there'll be like a zillion unsellable 60 GB PS3s just sitting around.
- Okay. Let's put the 80 GB model at $600, and drop the 60 GB model to $500, prompting people to buy more 60 GB models than they would have before. Then when it runs out, move the 80 GB model to $500. We'll do some bullshit about a pack-in game that gets dropped in the final price shuffle as a fig leaf.
I hope its not true. I feel kinda bad for being so hard on them all this time. I didnt want it to end like this. Something of a more dignified struggle.
Its possible.
I wish they wouldve dropped the 60gb to $449.99 and the 80gb at like 529.99 or 549.99 at least soften the blow a little bit.
Plus i really dont feel that the game and 20 extra gb is worht $100.

You guys got me all paranoid about my TV playing Resistance in 480p. Before I go ahead and buy one of these machines, could someone tell me if my TV will downconvert 720p games?
