I was thinking Goonies II, but there's no sword there.

Sounds like goonies II to me. There are lots of doors in that game that you use to travel to different areas. Also, once you go in a door, it goes to a first person view almost and you use things like a hammer or a hand to open things and find things that are hidden. Does that sound like it? That game is awesome. Another of my favorite nes titles.

Besides the sword at the end the first that comes to my mind is Start Tropics and it's sequel. Out of all the games listed in this thread Star Tropics is the hands down better game by a long shot.
