I wanna see that devil version. You should also make a toilet tuesday video for screwattack featuring your Japanese toilet. Advertising Cag on another site is always a good thing.

I'm intrigued by Cheapy's ability to let certain games diminish his ability to like other games.

Edit: Why does Wombat care about MGS4's trailer not being gameplay? It's not like he's going to play it if it was gameplay. Also, gameplay was shown at TGS (http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/6198)last year. Where Snake was rolling around in barrels, doing the worm, using his Octocamo, and shooting off of his back.

Good stuff, as always. It seems to me that a lot of people are saying that Sony kind of "won" E3, but then with the faux price cut some of the steam was taken away. Will they be able to come back in the face of Microsoft's monster release list this fall/winter?

Wombat has no memory: you discussed Metroid Prime 3's Augest release a few cagcasts ago, a live one I think.

Yeah, no kidding, old news there. The big news from Nintendo as far as I was concerned was the announcement of release dates for SSBB and Mario Galaxy - especially since everyone was convinced both (or at least one) would slip till 2008. You guys didn't mention those bombshells at all ;). (Though I kind of understand not talking about SSBB since they didn't demo it at E3 for some reason).

And way to piss on my parade Cheapy - I was getting really hyped for Metroid after watching the latest videos . Despite that, it is still my most anticipated game of the Fall. I really WANT to get into Mass Effect, but the shooter aspect of it is just not appealing to me. I want my RPG's to be RPG's . I mean, the story, the graphics, and the conversation elements all sound great, but I'm not sure I can get into the combat parts of it. It is strange that you find the shooter aspects of Mass Effect so appealing but didn't like the Metroid gameplay. Unless it comes out at the ultra-AAA level (with metacritic average scores in the upper 90's) I'm passing on that till a price drop. Same with Bioshock.

Did you get a chance to play Katamari for the 360? That, strangely enough, is my most anticipated 360 game this Fall. Yes, I have strange tastes (and they definitely don't line up with those of you and Wombat with your affinity for shooters and dislike of JRPGs).

CheapyD
07-17-2007, 08:42 AM
I actually did play Beautiful Katamari...it's pretty much the same thing as the PS2 games, with no jaggies. The graphics aren't as nice as I had hoped.

That's about the impression I got from the videos. Well, my kids were playing the PS2 one a few days ago and no jaggies is definitely a nice thing at least. It does seem from the vids that the objects clump to the Katamari in a more "realistic" way (if it isn't ridiculous to suggest such a thing ) but otherwise the style is exactly the same. Since I loved the PS2 versions (and even the PSP one) I don't mind this game being a "more of the same" one bit. It will be nice adding achievements to the mix as well. That should provide more incentive to get the better times/Katamari sizes and such.

Good show, I was so bored since I woke up early that I listened to it twice while doing other things.

The new Goozex contest pisses me off, if I knew they were going to give away a PS3 I would have waited and not signed up during the "fair" DS promotion that thorbahn3 "won".

Cheapy, before getting a Japanese core system remember that SOME 360 games are region locked. This also means that some games could be region locked in the future. So, if you're tihnking about getting a core system, I suggest doing some research as to which games are region locked and which ones are not.

Microsoft's representative at E3 in a press conference dedicated exclusively to details about live hinted of a major update coming this October to Xbox live. He stated that something really big would instore for October dashboard update. CheapyD, who was an attendee at the press meeting tried to get some more details from the represetatative but all he acquired out of the rep was that is would be bigger than just a dashboard update - more on the scale of Video Marketplace "Huge".

From the impressions I get from the E3 Cag Cast, it seems that the gaming industry is in a really strange place. Pokemon is the largest system mover? Little Big Planet impressing bald, Jewish men the world over? What happened to catering to the most hard core of hard core gamers? It’s like the hard core market has become irrelevant almost overnight.

I turned from hard core to casual with the release of the 360, as it coincided with the birth of my son. Suddenly, I have about 20 minutes of free time a day and just as many free dollars a week.

I took the survery at work so i'll listen to podcast tonight. Also Goozex sign up page is strange I screwed up the 1st time , you need to put the coupon code in the bottom of the page , but they don't really show you that part because it says continue before that. So that page needs to be made a little better.

Loved the show , but I felt like Wombat was a little to didn't care leave me alone I don't want to do this at the moment kind of show. He had nothing to say about the press confrences and he kept being like a child on xbox live. I love Wombat and everything , but he was acting a little to immature. If it wasn't for Cheapy moving along the show I would have had the biggest headace. I can't say anything bad about Cheapy though you kept the show on track and great.

Hey Cheapy, you might want to reconsider buying a new 360 and putting your old HDD in it. Only your profile will be able to play the XBLA games you purchased, other profiles will only be able to play trial versions.

I did the same thing, called MS to get points for all the games I bought so I could redownload them, and they said I needed to prove that my old system was returned to a store. I was unable to do so, and my girlfriend has been pissed ever since because she can't play Astropop on her profile (her fav game).

I for one am a big big Wombat fan. I can't imagine the Cagcast without him. I have even grown to like how bitter and jaded he is, and like that he's critical of the games industry.... but holy fucking shit he was negative in this episode. It seemed like it was his sole mission to rain on Cheapy's E3 parade and E3 in general. E3 should be an occasion to rise to for videogame podcasters and I got the sense that Cheapy was trying so hard to do so but Wombat only served the purpose of bringing him down.

Darknessbear, you are comparing a regular gameplay screenshot from a ps2 ratchet game with rail grinding screen shot from ps3...not exactly a fair comparison. Of course the PS3 version is going to look better. I'm just saying, the difference during the actually gameplay isn't that huge.

Also, I think wombat just wanted me to explain "the point" of Mass Effect, as in, the story, gameplay, etc...I know it is a game he is very much looking forward to.

Good CAGcast, but I'm unfortunately going to have to jump on the "hate Wombat" bandwagon for this particular episode. If you have a show that is centered around video games, I don't think it's asking much to set a few hours aside and watch the press conferences; especially when this weeks show is focused on said conferences.

I understand it can be hard when you have to go to work, but I work and I'm going full time at school and managed to watch all three conferences. You owe it your listenership Wombat, even if you think the conferences are boring, watch them for the sake of the CAGcast.

Wombat likes Cheapy to read things to him or talk about what he saw so he can give his opinion. Is he Jaded? Maybe. I'm Jaded too, sometimes things get to the points where it's more of the same and it's all just blah and hard to get motivated about games.. Besides, he also has a life and a wife. Gotta to give the furry bastard a break.

Nothing will ever be perfect, but using your voice and showing how you feel things are being crappy, bad, or being negative is a way for people to try to get things going in the right direction.

I'm not defending him either, since the few times he has responded to me, he acted like I was a nobody and it was a chore to write something to me... I didn't appreciate that.

Just my thoughts. Agree or disagree, I don't care.

I wasn't asking what s the point of playing the game, I genuinely wanted to know the storyline as I wasn't super familiar with it and was hoping Cheapy got some insight at the show. I wasn't being negative in slightest. As far as not having the time I guess my best excuse would be spending a portion of my week at my in-laws internetless house at east for my wife's birthday. And yes Mrs. Wombat will always come before a videogame press conference.

eh kinda meh, but you guys are allowed a so-so show every once in awhile.

Wombat seemed pretty uninterested and eh we kinda already heard about all the games Cheapie talked about even before E3 happened. Plus, at least for me, hard to get too excited about games that are even 3 or 4 months away and hard to get excited about trailers and too many gushing over how good games look.

Thanks for clearing it up, don't mean to be hard on you.

But you should have atleast made that clear, I felt like you were kind of ragging down on gamers, you seemed like Jammie Kennedy during the Activision Confernce.

It seemed like you were just "to good" for the Press Conferences and E3.

Ok ok, the Mass Effect thing was taking out of context by me, but thats because I was listening to that part as I typed. There were some other prime examples! That, I fail to have on hand.

And the Ratchet screens, I guess I agree it isnt the same thing, so let me try again:

ALTHOUGH, I will agree that Ratchet animates fairly similar to the original games thus making it seem like its graphically similar but its just that the animations where so simplistic and WELL DONE in the first RC1 that it is hard not to match them in RCforPS3.

Hey, that's a fine excuse, but to my defense you didn't say anything regarding that on the 'cast. It was more or less "Hey Wombat, did you watch bleh and blah?" your response was practically "Nope, they bore me", hence my post saying that even if they are boring you owe it to your listernship.

...Whats the point of him?

I watched the damn press confrences, FULLY.

Dissapointed... Should have had someone else on for this CAGCast.
Allow me to explain to you the concept of "the straight man." Imagine Wombat HAD watched all the press conferences, read every single hands on report, and called Major Nelson each night just to say "Hi." At that point, the conversation would go something like this:

CheapyD: So next I saw Mass Effect. Did you see anything about this?

Wombat: Yep. Tons. Looks great! What else did you see?

CheapyD: Well, I saw Bioshock and...

Wombat: Yeah, the art deco levels are cool. Looked great in the videos and it sounds like everyone liked the way it played. Next?

CheapyD: Ummm...Little Big...

Wombat: Seen it.

In situations like this, it is Wombat's job to be our representative in the discussion. Cheapy went to E3. Wombat didn't. And like many of us, he has a life and cannot follow every single snippet of information coming out of the show. Moreover, he's not supposed to know everything because then Cheapy would have no reason to tell him about it, would he?

That said, I did find it a little frustrating that Wombat declared Nintendo's "big news" to be the release date for Metroid Prime 3, when in actuality it has been known since at least GDC. And both guys glossed over the announcement of release dates for Brawl and Galaxy, which WERE new, and didn't even mention the announcement of Mario Kart for Wii.

In general, Nintendo kind of got the shaft in this show, while Microsoft got most of the love (curious given the advent of Cheapy's 360 joining the ranks of the departed). I can only hear about so many 360 shooters before my eyes start to glaze over, no matter how good they all look.

But for the most part, great show. I know what Cheapy means about E3 being better when it's smaller and about the people in the industry, rather than a lot of flash and jiggle. During the three years I covered it, it was just too damn much, and a lot got lost in the shuffle. My favorite part was hanging out with other game journalists, but they were damn hard to find. You might see them once, then never again unless you made specific plans, which was more or less impossible in that environment. So whether E3 keeps this new format or disappears altogether, I think it's about time.

Good, point. But you act like they planned that. . .

And I doubt Wombat would be like, "Little Big Planet? Ok next!" Its a discussion you discuss what you thought about it and you get two different views on the game.

Saying that its impossible to discuss a game without having one person not seeing it doesn't make sense. My favorite E3 discussions where the Ziff Davis (1up) Crew. They all had great conversations, and also revealed alot of information I didn't even know.

And it doesn't help when every time CheapyD explains the game Wombat kind of brushs it off, "Oh, that sounds... lame..."

But I did enjoy the CAGCast, it got better near the end. And I agree with Cheapy when he says there is alot of great games coming! Its going to be disgusting. Wombat says hes going to need to work more to afford the games, im going to need to work less to play them! Ahh!

Perhaps, but I've heard way too many gaming podcasts lately (IGN, Epileptic Gamer, others) where everyone works together, everyone sees and plays the same stuff, and the discussions essentially devolve into inside jokes and frat boy behavior instead of intelligent commentary about the stuff they've all seen but we haven't. I would hate to see the CAGcast turn into that.

And while they may not have officially "planned" for Wombat not to watch any of the E3 stuff, it's generally understood after 80+ episodes that, unless it's Oblivion, Wombat is generally going to be less informed and Cheapy is going to be the one telling us about things. THEN they discuss. The formula obviously works. I don't understand why people continue to act surprised.

glad you're safe Cheapy. i didn't know you lived that close to the quake.

btw, nice job with E3, you added a pretty cool "everyday guy" POV of the event.

Womabt wins this week with that line: "Jewish stars [aligning]" haha

R.I.P. CheapyD's Xbox 360

Damn, so many 360 deaths. Sounds like a horror movie in which the 360's are each being killed one by one. I fear that my 360 will be next. Ugh, this blows...

Damn - what a great Goozex promotion !! Too bad I signed up during the DS lite contest. For those that haven't signed up yet, give it a shot. I have been very happy with the service so far.

I'm not messing around with towels. I didn't pay $400+ so I could wrap the bastard in towels and hope that it works.

It's going off tomorrow.

No offense to you but this is about the 12th E3 podcast where the host spent a good amount of time on how much they drank at E3.

Otherwise I appreciate your takes and LMAO at "the falcon should come preinstalled with tic-tac-toe"

Looks like this fall I'm going to be the Cpt. Kirk of Mass Effect and try to nail me some blue alien bitches. Have you checked out the Too Human trailer out on live? That cinematic looks like shit next to Mass Effect.

Nice show guys. From the sounds of it, E3 was a lot of fun. I was a bit surprised that Cheapy's game of the show was Little Big Planet, considering the release date is TBD. From the sounds of it, I thought it would have been Mass Effect or BioShock.

As far as the big XBL annoucement later this year, I'm guessing it's going to be the Zune Marketplace being added to XBL with it's own blade, so people can download songs directly to their 360 or Zune, and manage their Zune via XBL.

I enjoyed you show.

The only thing that got me was the R&C complains about "More of the same but only in HD" what else could they have done? What would you have done to change up things and NOT RUIN the game for the R&C fan base?

It's easy to stand on the sidelines and make comments, but take it a step beyond that and explain some of the creative changes you would make and watch how people knock you down.

Good show overall.

Sorry to hear about your 360, Cheapy. At least you were able to breathe some new life into your console.

Hmmm, if you do get a japanese Core and slap your HDD onto it, wouldn't you be able to play Japanese-only titles as well as region free? (I don't know anything about 360 imports, but I assume there must be a few Japanese-only titles. Or, you can do pre-views of games launched in Japan first, like Blue Dragon that way...)

I have been very lucky with my pre-launch 360; it suffered being spiked down onto the floor, case and hard drive flying off, and still works fine. (I half-wonder if that didn't somehow help it, as everyone I know has had their launch 360 red-ring on them. Maybe it shook the gremlins out...?)

I just signed up for Goozex. Even though I'm more of a collector, I'm going to check it out.

CheapyD, thank you for your coverage of E3 and all the sacrifices you made both personal and professional in order to bring us the news. What I found a little concerning to me was amount of work involved and the visible toll that the E3 schedule was taking on you as the lone representative of CAG's all over the world. This got me thinking -

Where's Cheapy's Wingman?!

While many CAG's would argue that Wombat would be the most logical choice to be Cheapy's right-hand man at E3 Wombat's work schedule and the simple fact that he doesn't earn his living as the CAGcast co-host (yet) means unfortunately that Wombat can only do so much and as a result had to sit out E3 this year.

It looks like you could've used a hand out there at E3 and without putting undue pressure on Wombat perhaps next time you can enlist some help on your next Video Game event.

Why is everyone always bagging on Wombat? He's the color commentator, not the news crew. Jeez. He brings the funny. Straight up news reporting is dull, throw in a Vagina Clown comment from time to time and it makes it more listenable.

He is not even funny. He ads nothing in my opinion.

I found the parts where MP:3 not being great suprising and LittleBigPlanet dosen't appeal to me as much as it does to you so that just goes to show how opinions differ.

Wow, I can't believe the amount of backpedaling and ass-kissery that Wombat has sunk to in the recent episodes. I am referring to the "Vagina Clown" episode where you so correctly pointed out that Major Nelson is nothing more than a glorified mouth-piece for Microsoft. Now it seems that you are eager to retract your position by reducing it to a "phony internet grudge."

Not only that, but you are now sniffing around to be a guest on his show. You have let me down. You should have stuck to your guns. I expect this from CheapyD who seems to harbor a man-crush on Major Nelson (You got him a gift, Cheapyd? Are you serious?)

Oh well, you guys are still the best video game podcast out there. Keep up the good work, and keep off the ass-kissery.

I don't buy that, you greatly underestimate Cheapy's need to talk. It wouldn't just end with Wombat going "Yeah, I saw that." Instead you'd get more in-depth discussions about the topic at hand.

This time though, it was a unique situation where Wombat had to attend some family gathering since it was his wife's birthday and all. A good reason for not keeping up with the insane amount of information that E3 provides, otherwise though there is little to no excuse for not at least watch one of the conferences in their entirety. Especially when you're a host of a gaming podcast.

Well, after the portion you quoted I pointed out that I still felt that Wombat (and even Cheapy) could have done a little more due dilligence, especially when it came to Nintendo.

I don't think they could get Mass Effect onto 1 disc if you ask me.

Cheapy, I think when it comes to Metroid you are just too much used to dual analog controls. I've heard other people talk about it saying that if you're really into D.A. FPS's you're going to have trouble adapting to the shooting controls at first.

Cheapy I sent this to you in a PM but I will post it here in case you want to discuss it in the next CAGcast for others to hear. Thanks.
Cheapy today I noticed that cheapyd.com website has been blocked from my government computer. It says it is blocked because it is under the following category "Games". Previously this website has worked for a couple of years after the cheapassgamer.com website was blocked in 2005. Have you made any domain changes or anything to the cheapyd.com website or have they just increased their sensitivity for blocking game websites? If so is there anything you can do because I am sure I not the only one with this problem now. Thanks Cheapy and I love the CAGcast.

Damn, I'm feelin' like a true CAG. I joined Goozex (http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/temp_CAG-PS3_rules.asp?ref=www.cheapassgamer.com) took the CAGcast Audience Survey (http://www.podtrac.com/audience/start-survey.aspx?ver=1&pid=3GISo-m8x9E$). Goozex seems pretty cool. I am sending out 2 games tomorrow, in fact!

So who do I have to bribe to win that PS3? I promise I'll never say "PS triple" if I win it. :)
