I've decided to try and go through the first two Suikodens by the end of the year and I've got some questions.
I want to get all 108 characters but I was wondering, are there characters which you can miss and never be able to recruit again?
If you lose a character in those big battles (the ones with your army vs. the enemies army) are they gone forever?
Is it worth getting all 108 characters?
I'm only like 7 hours into the game (I just reach the elf village after it's been burned down.) and love the game but I wanna get the most out of the first time through since... I don't have time to go through it more than once.

Okay, let's see. Been a fuck of a long time, but...
For getting 107 characters in Suikoden, Gremio comes back to life. He is pretty weak compared to most characters, but the strength of your hero's army unit goes up a fair bit. You will be able to get him to join you in Sui 2, along with your main character, though there is a surprising amount of dicking around that has to be done to get them. I do not know what happens if someone dies in battle, as mine have only ever been crippled - not killed. If you get all the characters in Suikoden 2, You get Nanami back, I think.. I can only recall two characters that you only have one chance to get: Pahn in Sui 1 (you would be insane not to get him), and that asshole with the coin in Sui 2 (need Nanami)
Edit: Come to think of it, I don't think you can get Shiro and Kinnison after a certain point in Sui 2. Not sure. I always made a point of getting them ASAP, on account of Shiro being made of awesome.

Alright, that's good to hear. But I wish I hadn't read your first spoiler because... well, I didn't know that he died in the first place. Oh well, I actually don't like him and I wish he'd stop following me around honestly.
Thanks for the help!:)

Really?
...
Don't read the second spoiler, then.
I'm sure there are other people here who have played Suikoden's 1 and 2 more recently than I and can better inform you about this, but I'll keep you posted if I can think of any more limited-time characters.

Did you get the chipmunk (weird name..something) at the beginning?. The hero's hometown...been awhile.
If you don't get him, you won't be able to get him later on in the game, ever.

You're thinking of Suikoden 2.
Also, to answer the OP's questions:
In Suikoden 1, during the army battles, if it tells you that someone has died on the battlefield or something to that extent, then yes they are dead and you can't get the best ending. Also, considering where you currently are in the game, you need to be using Pahn and leveling him up and sharpening his weapon as much as possible, as you can lose him permanently in a couple hours based on where you currently are in the game.
In both Suikodens there is a certain period where you have to have all 108 Stars of Destiny, kind of a point of no return. It's not really obvious when this is in either game. I don't think there are any specific characters in the first game that are time based before the point of no return; just be sure to find out when exactly Leon will join you because it's a small window.
That's all I can think of right now. If I think of more, I'll post it.

Umm if you don't meet the correct conditions in suikoden 1 it's impossible to get the best ending. If I recallit requires your friend beating your father in a duel which is quite difficult unless you write out his responses and corresponding attacks.
Also suikoden 2 has a few tricks that are required to get the best ending.

Oh shi... really? I haven't used him since he came back after beytraying me. And I just lost Giermo to the man eating bugs or whatever. Damn, I really wish I had the guide for this game.

Like zionoverfire said, there are certain conditions to getting the best ending in Suikoden 1. One of them regards Pahn. After you defeat Milich, the current general you're fighting, you will fight Teo, the hero's dad. Pahn will duel him and if you lose the duel, Pahn is killed and you therefore cannot get the best ending. Using a FAQ is going to be best when doing the duel, since you need to know which phrases correspond to Defend, Attack, and Special Attack. Pahn statistics do carry over into the duel, that's why you want him leveled up with a powerful weapon.
Just follow what I said in the spoiler and enjoy the game, it's a wonderful game. Also, since I don't know what your primary party is, might I always suggest having Kai in the party as his and the hero's unite is by far the most useful in the game.

Don't remember much about S1, but I remember it being pretty easy getting all 108 stars.
Minor spoiler about S2
S2 was a little harder.. the barter one (forget the name, the shops have a balance on top) was a bitch to recruit.. took me forever. I'd make sure to have all 108 from S1, you can get Tir in S2 and he's probably the best character in the game. His rune is unstoppable.

Alright cool, I just got through all that and decided to look at an FAQ only to realize that... I missed a couple of characters but got a lot of them. But thanks to that girl's teleportation ability and that mirror, it's pretty easy going to places to do errands and coming back to the castle. I just gotta make sure to get all 107 characters so Giermo comes back before that certain point (which I don't know about yet).
As for Kai... hm... I don't remember if I have him or not. It sounds like I do according to the FAQ but I can't remember. I'm using the Victor, Valerie (very useful), Cleo as my main characters. Giermo took up the 4th spot but that's now occupied by Flik and Pahn made the 5th but since I no longer need him, that leaves an open spot. I'll kick out Cleo for Kai so I have a Unite attack.
One last question, should I worry a lot about leveling up my unused characters for the big battles? I appears that your characters levels carry over to your attributes during those battles but I'm not entirely sure.
Thanks all the help! Definitely loving this game and can't wait to get to the second one. Playing this game brings back so many memories of playing SNES RPGs... probably because of the 16-bit era graphics.:)

No, they don't. Think about Jeane, you can't even use her in normal fights. However she can still use a rune in the major battles. Their are some characters that are only in the game for these major battles. Example: Maximlian.
