I think HollowFreak's kind of right on this one, but I'll explain a little more. There was an awesome deal on a 27-inch Olevia HD monitor for $299 not too long ago, so I'm fully expecting that to come back around sometime. I know you want to know which of these is better, and in that case I'll say the Ilo, but be advised that's a "best of the worst case" scenario.

You're much better off waiting for an Olevia or Vizio to come down to an affordable price point for you. I for one would have jumped on the Olevia, but until I find another sale such as that one, I'm saving for a 32-inch Sharp Aquos. You have to take into consideration quality, not just price, on something you'll be using regularly. And I know Ilo sucks from experience, as does Akai. My aunt has an Akai and it's horrendous looking.

Also, I seem to hear a lot of bad stuff about eCost. Just FYI.

Those are probably off-brand cheap companies, but it's the panel they're using that counts (unknown).

Can't argue at the pricing though, but be vary of buying stuff like that. I personally wouldn't buy eitehr, but the 32" wins.

whats the difference in the westinghouse 32 and the akai 32?
and i changed my mind about the akai. the Akai has ASTC/NSTC turner when teh Westing has HDTV/NSTC tuners.

It should be noted that those or both refurbs, and still both from eCost. But yeah, Westinghouse is a much better brand.

OP, please check the following link before doing business:

Always research a questionable company first.

well where do you suppose to get a good tv at a price for UNDER 430 dollars more in the range of 300-400 dollars.

I'd personally wait and save up a bit more... 32" Olevias for $500 are pretty common so maybe you can get a smaller Olevia for $400 range. While I don't care for Olevias much they're the only budget brand I'd consider.

Keep an eye on the forums every day over at Slickdeals.net and Fatwallet.com. You'll regularly see LCDs in the $400 range. If you can wait to Black Friday, I can almost guarantee you'll find something quality for your range. Buy.com has a deal on a 37-inch Vizio refurb for $499. HNot sure if it's still available, but Vizios are considered king amongst off-brand LCDs.

yeah we were gonna get a Vizio for like 500 like months ago but now my Parents are saying that, thats too much for us right now.
And is their anything bad about buying a refurbished TV?

Not really, but some people just like new things.

I HIGHLY recommend saving up, man.

Seconded. And, no, there's nothing wrong with buying a refurb. I'm sure a lot of people got in on a good deal with the Philips refurb deal that was running not too long ago ($269, refurb 30-inch tube HDTV). There are so many things to take into consideration, too. How many HDMI ports. How many component. What kind of tuners, if any? Contrast ratio? Response time? Do some research in the down time while you're saving and you'll be a much happier customer in the end.

8ms response time is good. 1000:1 contrast ratio is not. My LCD panel is 5000:1, but granted, I spent lot more than $400 for it.

I'd never buy a refurb, but that's just me. Someone or something screwed it up (or returned unhappy) and had it fixed. That just not something I would be willing to risk for a big purchase (hell, I don't even like used cars).

Seriously, I would save your money for one of the bargain brands that the others have mentioned. If you have not heard of these brands you are looking at, there is probably a reason.

Also, it seems like you don't know a lot about HDTV's. Do some more research before you run out and get something you won't be happy with.

well i think we'll just order that TV and it has a 90 day warrianty so we'll see and they better let us return and get a refund.

Skip doing some research on what you like and get a refurb that you hope that you can return when you hate it. That's a brilliant plan, I wish I would have thought of it.

Don't be surprised when you hate and have to start all over again.

Are you sure about your contrast ratio? Are you sure it isn't dynamic contrast ratio?

A 1000:1 contrast ratio is fine. My LCD was 32" Aquos $800 (on clearance!) and even that only has a contrast ratio of 1200:1 (and a dynamic contrast ratio of 6000:1)

It's just a TV?

See, this is the problem that most get when they step into the HD era. Recently I just bought an 80 dollar 20 inch SD TV and it works fine, clear, etc. Didn't have to look up anything about the brand at all. Had problems with some things on screen appearing tilted, but other than that fine.

HDTV's are different. They are expensive. Price matters more and quality can really vary between a 1,500 dollar 32' and a 600 dollar 32'. So much problems can come with them ( ghosting, burn in, sd looking like shit, etc) yet they all cost so much. This is why you have to research. This is why there is a the avs forum, a forum full of nerds who buy HD sets constantly and are willing to tell about the problems and such. There is always help out there , it is just that you are not willing to accept it.

Bottom line: 400 dollar HDTVs will look like shit. 400 dollar monitors however....
Bottom line: No name brands ( and I'm not talking about Olevia, Vizio, Westinghouse, Vewsonic to s a certain point, Sceptre to a certain point ) will be worse than name brands.
Bottom line: Ordering off of the internet is not exactly a good idea. Especially from that site, especially from a no name brand. When you buy a Sharp, a Sony, or a Samsung, you are pretty much assured quality. Now when you buy a brand that nobody has heard of that you haven't even seen yourself you're practically bending over. There are places who are there to help people like you. Walmart actually sells quality ( somewhat optimized ) TVs for lower prices. So does Target and ect. That's the closest you can get for buying just a TV for a relatively low price. Also, it seems as if you have parents who don't want to spend the money. If you want to get them to buy an HDTV then convince them to step into a best buy one day. Maybe even a walmart. Let them soo for themselves how HD looks. What you're trying to do will turn them off completely. First off, if the TV is terrible or something happens with shipping, anything, they won't ever want to do this again. Trust me, I had my mom buy me a refurbished PS2 from gamestop quite some time ago and months into it it got DREs. She never bought me anything at that price again ( for a present ). I'm thinking maybe months later or a year later it went down to 150 new, so I got screwed. Also, if they see that THAT TV sucks then they will think they all suck and are not worth it.

That's another thing, HDTV prices will not stay this way forever. In 2009 all analog television will be ceased. That means that naturally, they will try a push an HDTV on everyone. That's something they just can't pull off at the current prices.

When you come back and want to invest some money into your gaming/ tv/ movie/ home theater (?) experience, then we can talk.

PS, an entertainment center would be easier to buy. Now a home theater is a different story :P.

Cheap tube TV that's the same as the one that was 269 refurbished. 350 though. 30 inches, and weighs a ton. Not refurbished. Check that out. Look in the other thread to see how it is.
