Hmm, interesting. I think that if this gets final approval, our first amendment rights will slowly begin to be stripped away in the next 40-50 years. While I can see why burning our beloved flag is definatly something we do not respond to nicely, it is still a freedom of speech and should be perfecly legal.

Funny how these bills always crop up in election years...

Flag burning is the only proper way to dispose of a flag that is to tattered or worn to be flown any more. Boy scouts do it all the time.

I'm glad to see that the Government is taking action on these types of items.

I can't tell you the number of times that I have had to witness people burning the flag. Just the other day I walked past a group of people (I'm not sure but they looked like they were foreigners) that were burning a flag in the middle of an elementary school parking lot! After they burned the flag, two of males (I think they were males) got married, and burned another flag in celebration while having sex! In front of school children no less!

Thank GOD that our government is spending what little time they have left this year focusing on issues that really matter instead of dealing with such "non issues" like the budget, health care reform, the impending expiration of the assault weapons ban. We need to deal with the flag-burning epidemic that is taking place in our country, and a constitutional amendment is the only way to send a clear message to these people.

Love it or leave it!

PS - For those of you that couldn’t tell, I am being sarcastic.

The first ammendment covers the freedom of speech and symbolic expression.

Flag burning is a form of symbolic expression.

Oh, and I almost forgot. The right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness makes gay marriage legal. The state bans on gay marriage are unconstitutional.

That silly old "constitution" doesn't apply these days.

These bills have been coming up and getting voted down for how many years now?

Thankfully, amending the Constitution is difficult. There's a reason why, and this is a good example.

EDIT: how could I forget?

I'm an amendment to be, yes an amendment to be
And I'm hoping that they'll ratify me
There's a lot of flag burners who have got too much freedom
I want to make it legal for policemen to beat 'em
Cause there's limits to our liberties
'Least I hope and pray that there are
Cause those liberal freaks go too far

Don't tell me.....without even reading the story yet -- it MUST be Orrin Hatch again, I'd even bet money on it. That fucker throws this one out every two years. He's a freaking Nazi motherlover. Just watch, He'll do it again in 2006, MARK MY WORDS.

I love the argument that THE flag cannot be desecrated. Like there is only ONE omnipresent flag for american consumption. THE flag is an abstract, an idea, thta cannot be 'owned' or 'burned' by anyone.

MY flag is in my front closet. It's MY property and I'll do whatever I feel like doing with it, or to it on MY property. If they ever get this amendment passed, I'll be the first of many to burn MY flag and run it up the flagpole along with a middle finger flag that says " F-U Orrin Hatch"

people who stick flags on thier cars and let them get tattered are worse. They are being "patriotic" yet destory the thing they seem to want everyone to believe they cherish.

Running around naked is freedom of expression to. It doesn't mean you have the right to do it. Personally I look at it like this, I don't give a crap if some idiot burns their OWN flag. If people start burning other peoples property then I'd have a HUGE problem.

Funny how the constitution always is brought up to defend/validate stupidity. Seems this would just be moral standard.

Why burn the flag? Simple, some people just enjoy the idea of a good protest.

This may shock you, but there are already laws covering people burning other people's stuff. There's no need for this one.

Well, as long as I can still urinate on it, poop on it, spit on it, and rip it up, I'm fine with this new law.
