View Full Version : Fighting Thread XXXII - How, Exactly, Can Blood Melt?

New fighting thread since we'z over the limit.
Current fighting game of interest: Melty Blood Ver. B. Well... actually, I suppose it doesn't matter to anyone other than like... me and maybe two other people.
Sigh...
Uhm.
so here's the question: Will you play a shitty fighting game because you like the characters or something other than the actual gameplay?

To answer your question, no. I'm that picky about my fighting games. If a fighting games mechanics are shit, it's hard for me to go back and actually enjoy it a second time. Then again I sound like a total hypocrite because I actually think CFJ isn't THAT bad of a game.
Also (OT), this is a good place to mention that tomorrow (the 25th) is my birthday. Yes, I will be spending the weekend celebrating with my friends, booze, and lots of MVC2, 3S and CVS2 at Milpitas Golfland.
I love arcades that close at midnight.

I have no excuses for some of the fighting games I have played. But typically, if I don't like the mechanics, I won't be back.
Jimbo Slice
07-25-2007, 03:03 AM
I also don't think that CFJ was that bad. It got a particularly bad rap because of the anticipation for it, but it seriously wasn't that bad.
It was a mediocre game that came out at a bad time.
edit: I just saw a commercial while watching Family Guy for King of Fighters 96 (via Gametap). Pretty cool but pretty strange.
I'll try it if the characters look cool. But yeah, if the mechanics suck, then repeat play goes out the window.
And sorry, but here's a really stupid question: will you be able to import T5DR Online from PS3 to PSP and play it on PSP?

Power Instinct Matrimelee. I played that horrid game just because Jimmy from Rage of Dragons was a Secret Character. Groove on Fight is much better than that game, but thats not saying much either.

In truth it looks hella slow HnK is much faster and man do the characters in the videos walk funny. Of course that might be because of the screen filling weapons.

Yes, one game clearly comes to mind: the Battle Arena Toshinden series. I love the characters (Kayin, Vermillion, Gaia, Sho, Rungo, etc...) and the story isn't half bad either. I never tought the gameplay was awful but it's definatly not top notch. Plus the anime was directed by Masami Obari.
I give you Eiji Shinjo, the Ryu of BAT:

Blood can melt if you freeze it in an ice cube tray, then put it in a microwave.
Shitty fighters I have been into:
--Toshinden
--Heavy Nova (Genesis)
--Slaughter Sport (Genesis)
--FX Fighter (PC)
--Pray for Death (PC)
i can't think of any others right this moment. there are plenty that I played a good bit though. I'm particularly ashamed of FX Fighter-- I really played it a lot.

I remember trying out the PS2 Naruto fighting game at an anime convention, and getting humiliated by somebody. That's when I decided to try and practice the game.
If it's tough to even explain the mechanics of the game to somebody else, then it seems like they have some problems. Or I suck at explaining things.

and in no way is Melty blood Homo Erotic. If anything its the exact opposite. I have noticed alot of people hating on the Blood though. The game is a damn solid fighter with a deep combo system which rewards creativity. Plus its pretty much crack for people who love tsukihime.

It has implied lesbian twincest. Maid lesbian twincest! Back in the original H-game, do the twins ever (potentially) get it on with knife kid?
Oswald9599

your mixing up Tsukihime the PC Hgame with the fighting game. The Characters and origins are the same but the storylines from the H game that include all the sexuality are not within MB. Anyway I think that Hisui and kohaku werent lesbians persay, though they didnt get with shiki, Hisui has a crush on him.

I played Melty Blood down in Tokyo for about an hour back in December. It's actually a balanced game, with great characters, awesome moves, and tight gameplay.
They have some statues for sale at my local hobby shop as well.
I'd definitely buy it if it arrived on a region 1 disc.
What I was more excited about was the Hakuto No Ken fighting game. I love Fist,... and this was everything I had always imagined a game based off of the series to feel like.
I played Fist for about 3 hours, and conquered every single Japanese contender in the arcade. I was suprised, because I figured the guys that lived at the arcade were good players.
One after one, I picked them off, and finally, when it was time to go, I gave my sticks to my last losing opponent, who was confused as to why I was giving him my continuing game.
He fired up a cigarette and kept playing as me and my friend left for lunch.
I pray that Fist comes to America,.. but I fear it won't, as it's been out for quite some time here in Japan. Keep your fingers crossed on that one.

Is it the newer fighting game, or the side scroller?
I think there were 3 different games made, and wasn't sure if the fighter was the arcade port, or an original fighting title for the console. Let me know, as I would buy a Japanese PS2 for that game,... although, I may end up buying the arcade machine if one comes up cheap enough.

The newest PS2 release is the arcade fighting game. I keep being tempted but the 64.90 pricetag drives me away. Plus I have no one here to play with and from what I've read, it doesn't offer a whole lot of stuff to do in single player mode.

Yeah, there's a semi-interesting mission mode that I tried a bit of... mostly played the arcade mode for single player though. It's still a lot of fun even without people because the AI is surprisingly good at the game even on the default difficulty setting. And from what I hear, it won't come out in the US. The licensing issues alone would probably make this impossible to bring over.

Anyone wanna take bets on whether Sega will release a patch or "Evolution" version of VF5 for the PS3 that has all this stuff? Maybe they'll release an even later revision...to give us incentive to buy the game for the 3rd time.
I would rather have a PS3 version-- I like the sharp look over smoothed and muddled textures...but if they could make the models a tad smoother, that would be nice. no FSAA though...

But to answer your question, what's the point in Sega doing anything with the PS2 version if VF5? Nobody bought the game when it sold brand new for $40. Answered already, but yes it's the Sega arcade fighter:

It's steep @ $65, but you could always wait for a PA 20% off sale or use strikebang or those $5 off $50 coupons to lessen the damage (to your wallet).
And shit, PA charged me shipping for KoF Reg A. Damn, it was part of a larger order which they shipped out to me...earlier in the week! Wha? I'm wondering why they didn't just save me $2.10 and just ship the whole kitandkaboodle together. #-o

For one thing, the Japanese fans who bought PS3s just for VF are going to be pissed that there's a better version on the Gaijin 360. Sure they make their money in the arcades, but their console fanbase is all on one system right now. This makes me think they have plans for more VF on the PS3, one way or another.
More importantly, it would take less time, money, and effort to build on what's already there, making the profit margin higher. Since the PS3 fanbase will only grow and people know VF, a budget (or just cheaper) version would probably do pretty well.
Chacrana
07-26-2007, 05:05 PM
If we got VF5 Evo on the PS3, I guarantee that it would sell much, much, much better than the original version... I mean, it'd be the only game at that price point and much easier to swallow for people weary of spending $60 on a fighter.

d/f+2,1,3 hits... so does f+2,1...
You can do 1,2, hop over... if they stay there do BT 3, if it hits them while getting up you can get an u+2 if the stun happens....
You can also do hop over land 1+4 for the moonsault...

Yeah, usually how it works is,... if it's on Play=Asia for $65,.... then it's at my local retailer for $34 after the exchange rate conversion... and that's if it's new.
There are literally hundreds of games for the Japanese systems in bargain bins all around where I live.
Down in Tokyo, and Den Den near Kyoto, you can find even cheaper deals.... I'm talking single digits for fairly good games.

Totally unrelated to anything, I only have 1 costume left to unlock in MVC2.
This is the 2nd time I've had to do this over the years. It's rewarding but extremely annoying at the same time.
Also Tron's projectile assist makes playing cruddy low-tier characters pretty fun.

Earning the characters was a nice bonus to the game. I love MVC2 so I don't really need an extra push to play more.

I was flipping through some of my old comics and look what I found. Anyone remember these?
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/Zangeif123/StreetFighterComic.jpg
- If you don't already know, these were Malibu Comics adaptation to a Street Fighter comic book. It didn't go so well, infact it was so crappy that Capcom stepped in after issue #3 and said, "This is terrible, stop making it." The series only lasted 3 issues. Apparently I'm missing issue #2, I guess my brother has it. But anyways, out of intrest & boredom I read these two comics. I must say, as a fan of both Street Fighter & comic books I applaud Capcom for stoping this before it got worse. :applause:
Here's the synopsis: Ken won the first Street Fighter Championship, however it's Ryu that Bison has his eye on, why? I don't know, maybe cause he's Japanese. Anyways Bision orders Balrog & Sagat to beat up Ken. They succeed, scalp him, then mail his scalp to Ryu with his bloody clothes. Word breaks out, everyone thinks Ken's dead (he's not) and all the other Street Fighters are outraged (Guile, Zangief, Blanka, etc.) I guess eventually they are supposed to organize and stop Bision from what ever the hell he's doing, just like the dumb SF Movie. In a shameful attempt to sell some of their other crappy comics, Malibu includes one of it's own heroes in the mix, simply named "The Ferret." E. Honda sits on his toes and wins, pretty much telling the reader "This Hero Sucks!!!" It ends with some unknown chick punching a dummy with Ryu's picture on it, signifying she hate Ryu. Who this girl is, nobody knows cause it never got past issue #3. Also Ryu & Chun Li have a thing for each other.
- One more note, they spell Chun Li = Chan Li & Blanka = Blanca. :error:

hey foolz~!! let's talk about Guilty Gear!
I dont mean like "oh yeay guilty gear what a nice game, I like the story, I'm gonna buy it from play asia, blah blah blah blah"
naw mang fukk dat. Let's talk about like, u know, playing this game!!
Ranbatos start next saturday for accent core, I gotta lot to relearn!
so here's my shyt, I play Axl as my main dood (especially since I aint lpayed in years)
I jux got back from the arcade and was playin sum dood, I'd go for my typical combos and shyt only to realize they replaced Axl Bomber!
that shit goes at a downward angle instead of up!! wtf mang?!?!
apparently, there's a new bomber loop to go with it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjcJ4fvskls
apparently his old bomber is now a force break attack as I noticed by watching match vids jux now.
furthermore, I also noticed u can air dash after doing his FB, I not sure if it requires jump install or not...
but with this new move means all the theory fighter I thought of (as well as successfully tested) is now moot...
i.e. anti air launch, jump cancel, mini air combo (k,h or something like dat), new 63214S move, frc, land, 2S, SJC, H, D, 623H
shyt wont work anymore...
for non corner game, 63214S seems to be the air ender, and that's it, no more after that.
so now I am wondering how useful the blue cancel in that move now becomes...???
there's a bit more on my mind rite now... but I'ma leave it at that for now...
so..... who do u guys use?
Chacrama, u said GG is your favorite game and u're good at it, spit sum knowledge yo. I'm hungry to learn.

Mayng, I don' know shiii about Axl. All I play really is Sol, Ky, and Baiken... sometimes Faust. And I was happy with the changes that those guys got for the most part. Except for Sol's Ground Viper coz that shit used to fly up in the air so it was a lot more useful, but now that bitch ain't got no hopz. But it's still easy as heeeyyylll to bounce people into the wall and then smack dat bitch up with Sol's super so that's nice. And Ky's got an additional attack that he can do after his shoryuken-attack (whatever it's called) that hits people into the wall and if you'z quick, you can fly over there and smack dat bitch up some more. Baiken's pretty much the same tho... crouch and HS is still really powerful, though you don't get no blood in AC. Gay.
Still, I haven't played much AC, but I've had to revise a lotta my tactics. Which is too bad.
JEKKI
07-29-2007, 02:15 AM
flying high into the air makes u vulnerable tho...
it's really been a long time since I played, but I remember doods would use ground viper only for rushdown tactics and to push you to the corner.
you can do like ground viper, RC, command grab into combo... I think. I dont use Sol but I'm playin theory fighter again, everything I kno about GG is too outdated... dat's why I wanna play again
Yo, sorry for the late reply JEKKI... the con is completely sold out already :(

Yeah 63214S for Axl is mainly an ender move, but sometimes you can use it as throwbait when you TK the move.
You can do this combo with the 63214S move:
63214S[FRC], land, 5P, 2S, SJC, j.H, j.D, 63214S
or
this combo for the corner:
63214S[FRC], land, S(c), 2S, JC, j.D, bomber, 2S, JC, bomber, rensen, tap 2
If you land the first 63214S as a counter hit you won't need to do the FRC(blue cancel).

Merruty Brutto - Acto Cadenuzah!
MANIA!!! Uhm... so lik, there isn't a whole lot changed from Act Cadenza. The core gameplay is still pretty much the same, and that's to be expected. First, there's the addition of White Len. I think there's maybe another new character, but I don't know. Second, there's a few new stages, all of which are pretty cool. You can see one of them in the last screenshot. There's some tweaks done to the gameplay to make it more balanced... can't say what those changes are since I never really played the original that in-depth. The tag team mode is pretty damn cool though. Fits in completely naturally with MB's gameplay. The graphics still look rough... which I suppose is to be expected. Luckily, if you have a good video card, there's some stuff you can mess around with in your video card settings that'll make it look a little better. The game does run at 60FPS though and it looks really, really smooth. Smoother than the PS2 version.
So yeah, it's worth picking up if you're a hardcore MB fan or if you haven't bought any version of MB yet. I definitely like it better than the PS2 version... speaking of which, my copy's up for sale if anyone wants it.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention -- the AI has gotten a massive upgrade. On the default difficulty, the AI's pretty vicious and dishes out some surprisingly nice combos. I was happy to see that, since before, the default difficulty gave you braindead enemies for the first half of the matches you play and then ramps the difficulty up a ton.
I love this game.

I wonder if that will be the final look or not. It seems odd they would add those two little images to the top like that. I sold off my DOA 4 stick when the prices got insane, so as long as this one works like that one did I'll pick this up. I can use the 360's D-Pad pretty well with SFIIHF but with the upcoming games like VF5 and SSFIITHD I think I'm going to be happy to have a stick again.

the two little images (whether they end up on the final version or not) make the entire stick look terrible.

hmmm most of you guys may be getting your wishes:
http://arcadeheroes.com/2007/07/30/street-fighter-4-may-still-be-on-the-way/
Thanks to a tip from the Stinger Report, it appears that Capcom may be soon revealing a new Street Fighter arcade title. It is unknown if this would be Street Fighter 4 something else but at the recent Anniversary celebration for Street Fighter at a number of Capcom arcade venues, displays have appeared with copy that alludes to a new Street Fighter arcade title. Both us and The Stinger Report are going to be wary about this until anything official is announced as rumors back in 2005 turned up with nothing once Capcom began scaling back on their arcade operations (you might recall another game which seems to have been lost in limbo, War of The Grail). So please remember that is solely a rumor until we actually see a system for it. Photos courtesy of The Stinger Report via Gamewatch.
when is the JAMMA show anyway? Tekken 6 news is a strong possability :)
anyone see the gameplay videos of harvey birdman yet? Guile makes a cameo since Capcom is making it.

Phew, got back from Gamestop after turning down a warranty, a GameInformer subscription, and a $10 preorder on the $100 Guitar Hero 3. The guy started another sentence, but then looked at me and said "$16.15" and I paid him and left promptly. Because he was annoying me.
So I get home, thinking to myself, "Y'know, this better be an improvement, because I really hope that the PC version isn't just really strict or something gay like that." Because I can't even dash without encountering some sort of issue and that's a red flag. A really red fuckin' flag. So I take the Radioshack piece of shit and plug in the Pelican adapter which I'll be using for Tekken on the PS3 in a few short weeks. I plug in the Tekken stick. I proceed to play a match of Melty Blood. Instant improvement. As in, now, I can do absolutely everything effortlessly. So I guess that input lag is actually a far bigger issue than I originally thought, because it was crippling Melty Blood. So yeah, I was thinking of holding onto the Radioshack adapter in case I have a friend over who wants to play Melty Blood, but it's such a piece of shit that I think I'll just throw it away and get another Pelican adapter. So anyway, I'm happy. I recommend the fuck out of the Pelican adapter as it is lag free and works flawlessly on the PC.

best thing to do is keep an eye on craigslist... I didn't want to pay too much as well, but found it for $200 cheaper than retail and didn't have to pay tax at all, thus saving me roughly $250. I bet you can get them cheaper now as well since the price drop thingy.

Stick wise for the PS3 I think it's the HORI Fighting Stick 3? But the 360 your limited to only the DOA Hori stick. In a few months you can get the VF4 stick, but I asume it'll be the same exact thing, just diffrent art.
For games you gotta find a way to play import games for your PS2. It's actually easier & cheaper than most people think. Games like Hokuto no Ken, KOF XI, Melty Blood, SamSho Tenka, Neo Geo BC, etc... Most will never find their way over here.
EDIT - Also watch out for Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD which will be on XBLA soon. I'm sure this entire thread will be playing.

Not to be a dick but you should rule on the Xbox/X360 if you want to be a hardcore fighting fan. Most of the fighting games released for them are on other systems and run better. That is unless you want to get yourself really good at DOA.
Rodimus is right is saying that you should find a way to play imports on your PS2. Many fighters (a lot actually) do not make it over here to the states for one reason or another. Most hardcore fighting game fans I know have a way to play imports on their PS2.
Those who do not import, well it's sort of mandatory you own a PS2 (or Dreamcast depending on who you ask) for fighting games. The U.S has a pretty solid list of fighters available here in the U.S to get you started.
As for sticks, get a PS2 stick. That was later on you can use it for your PS2 and pick up the PS2/PS3 Pelican converter to work on your PS3. But if you know for a FACT you will never use your PS2 for any importing, a PS3 stick would be a good choice.
360 stick? If you can get one cheap, why not get one. Then again if you are like me, most of your fighting game collection is on other systems. Maybe 1% of my fighting game collection is on Xbox 360/Xbox
More importantly, as Rolento said PLAY WHAT YOU LIKE. I would hate to start playing fighting games simply because I want to tell people who "hardcore" I am.
EDIT: As far as practice, do you have any friends that are hardcore fighting game players? Do you have an arcade where you can find competition at. If not, there isn't too much you can practice on when playing against the computer (as it can get predictable). Just practice your bread-and-butter combos, countering, your good/bad matchups, punishing whiffs (missed moves), etc. etc. Pretty much keep it in your mind how to take advantage of a situation but also how to get out of a bad one (or make it so it doesn't sting much).

Azu, you'll never be better than me at DOA 4, so stop trying. But -- the best stick you'll get on the 360 is probably the upcoming VF5 stick, so get that if you're planning to play VF online (which you should.) If you've got a PS2 or PS3 (actually, I know you have a PS3), pick up a HRAP or a Tekken stick. The Tekken stick is cheaper, but uses a stick and buttons that are slightly less awesome, though still very good (from my understanding.) With the Pelican converter, you can use the Tekken stick on your PS3 and PC as well.
As for getting good at fighters, honestly, I'd recommend playing GG until you get at least decent at it. The reason being that it's a really complex fighter and really fast paced, so if you can handle that and get good at developing your own strategies (IMO, the most important skill you need for being good at fighters in general), then you can apply that to pretty much anything since there's little else that requires you to act as fast as GG. And no, before the wolves attack me, I'm not saying that VF, Tekken, etc. are slow.

Guilty gear is definitely not a complex fighter whatsoever, tho I am not saying that it is simple, but it's very accessible.
offensively you have an incredible amount of options:
*every character has high priority anti-air moves,
*every character has a safe meaty hit that doesnt leave you in dangerous recovery,
*every character has an overhead attack that launches the opponent.
*every character has a blue cancel for rush down
defensively;
*your character can perform a guard that reduces blockstun, eliminates chip damage, and pushes your opponent farther decreasing pressure
*bursting acts as a combo breaker of sorts
*a universal alpha-counter type move
so it's becoz of all this safety put into the game that you do not have to act fast at all!
GG is nothing more than a game of variety of crazy ass combos which makes it fun. damn near every aspect in the game revolves around this issue.
every time a new revision to the game comes out, the combos change.
tech recovery and counter hit properties all encourage and inhibit different combo opportunities making you pick and choose a new one for each situation, as does the guard block meter.
the only complexity really is the variety as each characters plays so differently, but once u get comfortable with that character you're set.
CVS2 and 3S are games that make you think fast, faster games like GG and MVC2 require less thinking and more raw ability to perform shyt.
finally, the only real skill necessary to kno in playing games is to understand why you are losing. period.
with youtube and all this shyt, anybody can get good at pulling shit off, but that doesnt mean you're gonna kick ass against ppl. Just play, recognize your mistakes and weaknesses, and then do something about it.

i dunno Jekki, GG appears really fast and easy to mash, but a lot of characters aren't all that intuitive. I feel like the only really intuitive character with easy combos is Jam (keep in mind I've never even tried using Sol or Ky, so I imagine they're easier to use since they're the ken and ryu of gg.)

That doesn't look so much like a long poke with J5 (6?) as a re-animated B,DB,D,DF+2.....
if anyone goes to GS/EB anytime soon, today all VF5 game guides dropped to a penny... time to get one.

but in regards to Jam, she actually takes a lot more work to play as, comparable to Chipp I would say.
I can understand if you're talking about how you can cancel her kick command attacks into other ones,
but ultimately that is not how you play her effectively.
Do not judge a game on how it appears. Figure out how to play, then make a statement.
I think UMK3 with be the first game I get 200/200 on. I beat Noob last night now I just have the 100 wins left, and a Friendship.

Nice. It might've been the first one I did as well, I can't remember.
edit: I think Geo Wars was first.

I can make a statement without being top ranked, ya know. ;) there are a lot of weird specials and supers that are difficult to use effectively. it's not all gatling combos. it is very fast paced and accessible, but there's a lot of precision involved in the game. anyone who has some experience with fighters can see that.

good point... here's hoping his B,DB,D,DF+1 is the same :) too cheap then :P
also my first 200/200 XBLA game was UNO... and my only full disc game I got full on was oblivion (ie. 1250/1250).
oh and some stupidity:

Hey Markman!
Sorry this is the wrong forum but I didn't get the answer I was looking for in the PS3 forum. Granted, there may not be an answer I like so I'll try here.
Anyhow, you have the JP version of T5DR right? My question is this, how the hell did you manage to buy stuff in the Japanese Playstation store? I'm dying to be frustrated and angry at the JP PSOne release of Last Blade but I can't buy it. Any pointers from you (or anyone really) would be appreciated.

I picked one up in Japan for 100 yen ($1) I pop it in every now and then for a laugh. Blanka always looked so stupid, and I never understood who the hell Sawanda was.

I read an explanation of who he is in a post from a guy who helped create the arcade version (it's basically a huge apologetic rant about how they had hoped to create an amazing game and ended up with crap.)
Ken has the best win pose.

and granted yeay, there quite a bit of precision in the game as when I try to do shyt I'm seeing in videos, the opponent always tech escapes me, so I gotta keep on doing these moves until I figure out how to do them right.
I cant even connect an air follow up from a rensen blue cancel yet -_-, but I think I kno what I am doing wrong. Cant do bomber loop yet either, altho I think I'm almost there.
so in the end, with enough practice it begins to come more natural, and I've only been practicing for 2 days with $1 - $1.50 each day.
in XX the opponents ability to tech out was not as lenient, something that got fixed (or changed) with each new installment I guess. There was less need for precision outside of FRC and just more ability of being good with the buttons.
EDIT: unrelated story, here sum pics I took yesterday (in bad quality as always)
