View Full Version : CAGcast #83: Nuts Ahoy!

CheapyD
07-26-2007, 03:42 AM
CheapyD explains his best/worst E3 picks, complains about his first Xbox 360 theme purchase, and both hosts give impressions on MGS4. Not only do we cover the latest game industry and shopping news and answer your questions from the CAGbag (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=71382), but Wombat tries to guess CheapyD's long running secret!

Man... Metal Gear Solid does have a lot of ... nut buisness. I just loaded my old save from MGS3 and the bad guy comes in and grabs Snake's pants after saying "I was waiting for you in my room". I think that is what messed up him and his "sons" right there.

I like the way Sony does updates. Also I like the PSBlog, seeing that they are working on their consumers most wanted features. I'd hate having to wait months for updates. It is like, do you want small improvements now, or one huge one every half year? I'm weak. I want simple updates every few weeks.

Also some of the CAG's have a PS3 Wallpaper thread now. (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=145968)

My Thoughts on MGS4 Gameplay not being Shown at E3

I think there are two major reasons.

1.Hideo Kojima has been very up front about his feelings that the New E3 was a step in the wrong direction, he feels that the old format with the large attendance and Spectacle helps to bring mainstream awareness to gaming.

2. Since the new E3 had so many fewer Invites, there may have not been as many members of the Japanese press able to attend E3 this year. Kojima was smart to show off the game in Japan where it could make a huge splash among the Japanese Audience.

Holy crap, congratulations Cheapy and Mrs. Cheapy!

What, ah, eh? I'm listening now - haven't gotten to that yet, but congrats in advance!

Anyway, Cheapy, just wanted to say I found your response to my comments about MP3 to be entirely acceptable and appropriate. I know you don't often hear that from people in these show threads so I just thought I'd throw that out ;). I have to admit, while I really like the 3D Metroids, I haven't finished either one. I am intrigued by the Wii controls though (and it supposed to look at least marginally better than the GC ones ;)).

As for Katamari, I'm fine with "more of the same" on that one. No jaggies and a solid frame rate will be great. I've been getting the itch to bust out the old PS2 ones - now I can just wait for the new one. On the pricing: well, you guys forgot the PSP version in the incremental gouging. We had the original at the great price of $20, the sequel at an OK $30, then the PSP version at an unacceptible $40. You can see where this is going - I'm sure the 360 version will be $50 (can't imagine it is $60). I preordered it at Gamecrazy and they had it either for $40 or $50 (can't remember - but it is probably not a final price anyway).

Edit - EB/GS has it listed on their website for $39.99. That is good news if true - I'll gladly pay that for it!

Nintendo's press conference had way too much gloating, Microsoft's too. Powerpoint presentations are just boring.

You guys don't know why they didn't show MGS4 gameplay? It would've stolen the show away from anything else Sony had shown. Plus, they weren't planning to show anything until the next week or two, so they get their own spotlight to shine and announce new things. Cheapy didn't answer my question in the MGS4 thread about if you're actually excited about the game or not. Mind explaining if you're thinking about picking it up or not.

I'm sorry, but I wasn't impressed by MS's lineup this fall. Besides multi-platform third-party stuff, I'm not interested in much else. They'll be great for those that are interested in those types of games, but that doesn't include me. Maybe Blue Dragon and Mass Effect, but not enough to be pick one up with the plethora of hardware problems unless I have help to be able to afford it. What Sony has, especially from Insomniac and Naughty Dog, is more interesting to me. I guess taste has no bearing on that type of thing.

About Wombat's complaints about the MGS4 gameplay video, the cutscene was brief and you can play the game however you like. If you want to shoot everybody and not sneak, you can do it, as long as you don't suck. Cheapy, Snake hit the guy in the balls. Not a punch, but enough to knock him out.

The Heavenly Sword demo should be the same demo that's been shown at the conferences for the past year.

I like how Cheapy can read N-Gai as N-Gay so easily, but has trouble saying N-Guy like he was saying something innapropriate without laughing.

Response to Cheapy's answer to my CAGbag question: I did say that you guys poo-pooed the hype, not the game. ;)

Congrats on the big news, Cheapy.

Good show, despite Cheapy's crankiness.

Wow - the surprise was one thing, but the October due date is even more of a surprise. How could you keep a lid on that for so long? My wife is due mid November and we've known for ages, it seems (also a boy by the way, but that's nothing new to me). You guys are due right around the corner... Too bad, though, Cheapy, you'll have to play Mass Effect with the volume down so as not to wake up your newborn . Though perhaps the noise of the 360 itself will wake him up, even with the volume all the way down ;). (By the way it was me who mentioned that the Halo demo was probably running off the HD - like I said, my Elite is very quiet when running XBLA games and the like but a beast with 360 games so it seems, maybe, MS has quieted down the fans though I have no idea what that means for overheating).

Edit - One final note from the end of the show when Wombat asks if there are any big releases next week - HELLO, Mario Strikers Charged! Now, sure, not everyone will be into that, but it is the first *real* online game for the Wii and (friend codes aside) will be a big test for the online capabilities of the Wii and, more importantly, Nintendo's online infrastructure. It should be a nice early test of how well things like SSBB (hopefully online, though Nintendo is suspiciously quiet on that front) and Mario Kart (definitely online) will go...

Cheapie you're really off on Metroid Prime on the GC. Amazing game. AT the same time many folks don't like it. Why? They expect a standard shooter and then are disappointed when they don't get it. (Disclaimer: I never was a big Nintendo fan either. I just got a GC 2-3 yrs ago. And I didn't think the second one was that great if only because it was more of the same.)

I think you're biased against Nintendo because you think only NIntendo games get a break from reviewers. F that. They are no different than any other franchise like Halo or GTA or any other big developer like Rockstar or Bioware. I mean hell you already gave MS's lineup an A+ this fall. You're already saying Bioware hasn't let you down and it (ME) will live up to the hype. You're a bit hypocritical there.

Also I think you diss the Metroid Prime 3 for one reason. Lack of hi-def graphics. IT's funny that you say, 'sure it plays different, but it looks the same.' without quite realizing that you showed your bias and how many people actually would rather have games that play different rather than just look prettier. After all what makes games different from movies is your interaction with the screen.

The controller for the Wii is really NIntendo's hi-def.

Also Wombat is right. Sony and others just show hi-def trailers and Americans buy the game. American gamers are too easy.

And Congrats!!!!!! on the future kid. I have a 6 yr old and a 9month old myself.

And Rockband? I think it r won't take off as much as you think. I'm with Wombat there. Guitar Hero has the brand by far. Rockband is too much $$$$. I think there's too much coordinating amongst friends to really make use of it to its full extent. IF you're only getting the game then that doesn't make it much different than Guitar Hero. I just don't see it.

Go is a very popular game. Kinda surprised you had never heard of it.

In fact, Hikaru No Go is a manga based on the game of Go, which runs in Shonen Jump.

And Cheapy, if you are wanting to practice, Yahoo! Games has free Go on there.

Congrats Cheapy!! Great news for you.. I am sure you are going to have a great time and get your new son into gaming as soon as he can hold that controller.

Great show as always.. Very entertaining.

Can't wait to hear some thoughts on the new Railfan.. I broke down and grabbed a copy myself that should be here next week.

On a side note.. If you have Softbank Cell service you could use a phone like the HTC TyTn which Softbank sells. You can grab one on Ebay and use an English ROM on it. You could also buy one from Softbank and reflash it to English. Then you could use the same phone with a TMobile or ATT sim in the US.

My wife is over in Japan now and she is using a Vodafone / Softbank phone that she uses over here in California and just got a SoftBank sim to use over there while she is visiting family.

Anyway.. keep up the great work.

Also there's an anime/manga based on Go. Here are some things you can watch on youtube.

I've thought about this before when people move to a foreign country, but what language do you teach the tyke. Obviously if the kid is going to live there, it has to learn the native language. But you yourself, only speak english. Does that pose a problem, or is it just easier for kids to learn two languages at once?

Congrats on mini-Cheapy Cheapy! Now when will Wombat get a litter of lil Wombat juniors? Anyhoo, nice cast, I thought it was slightly rushed so Wombat got left behind sometimes on some of the things he wanted to say. I disagree with what you said about games getting rated higher because of the brand naming, the brand name represents the essence of what gamers like about the series. Wombat brought up a good point about GTA and Halo, etc., can't have a double standard there! When I play a GTA/Halo/Zelda/Mario/whatev game, I know what I'll be getting and I know I'll like it, and I look forward to the next one because of what the game is about, not the brand name. They're more of the same and like Wombat says, it's a good thing when done correctly! And since when did ratings matter to you cheapy! Screw ratings, they're useless anyways.

http://rbjtech.bulldoghome.com/pages/rbjtech_bulldoghome_com/XClampIII.htm

Take it for what it's worth, but people over at some other sites like Gamefaqs have reported this fix to work when even the towel trick fails.

Link to more fix methods:

Why didnt you guys talk about this?

http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Story/200707/N07.0720.1230.26535.htm?Page=4

Kim: Yeah, but here's the thing: I think one of the most important, subtle announcements at the Xbox 360 briefing is that Resident Evil is coming to Xbox 360. Yes, it's from Capcom, who's been a great supporter of us.
GI: But we knew that two years ago.
Kim: What?
GI: Resident Evil. It was shown at TGS two years ago.
Kim: No, but coming to Xbox 360.
GI: Yeah. It was at the press event.
Kim: I don't think so.
GI: I'm positive. I was there.
Kim: Really?
GI: It was shown at both press conferences.
Kim: That RE5 was coming to…?
GI: Yep.
Kim: I'm going to have to confirm that. That was supposed to be the big announcement

BTW, Congrats. I call that he will go as robocop for Halloween.

Shocker! best conference is the one with Cheapy on the big screen. Also shocker! notorious fatass gamers complain about walking around E3 but get excited about Wii Fit. I hope that Fit scale is a truck scale. Little known MGS fact, Snake is named after his affinity for trouser snakes. The great thing about MGS games is that you can plow through them if you want Mr. Wombat. Btw congrats to the Cheapys on fulfilling their biological objective. October due date = No Mass Effect in '07. From one father to another, get ready for the greatest experience of your life and say goodbye to gaming. Peep my baby girl in case you missed it the 1st time.

Well I have something in response to #83. Cheapy was talking about E3 and who he thought won and lost with respect to the press conferences, etc... I just didn't get how other than the purest of Nintendo fanboys he is the ONLY and I mean ONLY one that though Nintendo had the best press conference!?!?! What exactly did they show?
I HAD to miss something, along with every other report that I saw come from E3, becuase the only thing that I saw was Metroid and Wii Fit!!!!! I mean come on, that is why true gamers don't have Wii's in their house.

Now I've heard some arguments that Sony won the press conferences, that MS won the press conferences, but NOBODY has until Cheapy said it, have I heard someone say Nintendo won it with Wii Fit.

I just didn't understand this at all, what was so compelling about the Nintendo conference? I'm willing to take note that I could have missed something along with everyone else. What was it that I missed, and please don't say the Wii Fit, because that's not worthy of conference of show?

I'm sorry, but this statement negates everything else you said .

I give Cheapy kudos for picking Nintendo (though, as he says, they all kind of sucked so it's not like he thought Nintendo blew the others away). We know from the CAGcast that he's no Nintendo fanboy, so it is his genuine opinion based on what he saw.

I agree. Juarez is a perfectly acceptable Western shooter. I would have prefered some light RPG elements, but other wise, it was a fun shooter.

The Darkness is pretty solid, as well. Beat them both and really enjoyed them. I like games I can go through and not have to think too much about.

BTW, Cheapy you keep saying that the 360 has "no question" the best line-up this Holiday season? Really?

The 360 has Mass Effect, Halo 3, F.E.A.R Files, Blue Dragon, Fatal Inertia, Katamari, Ace Combat, Bioshock, Two Worlds, PGR 4, and Battlestar Galactica

The PS3 has Ratchet&Clank, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Eye of Judgement, Unreal Tournament 3, Haze, Lair, Warhawk, LBP Demo (The Demo will be realeased this year on PSN, with the full version next year on Blu-Ray with levels created by users), Folklore, Hot Shots Golf, GT5 Prologue, and Time Crisis 4

Or the Wii with it's big titles such as Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros, Metriod Prime 3, Mario Strikers, Zack and Wiki, and Soul Calibur.

I think all 3 consoles have an extremely positive outlook this year, but I wouldn't say one is definitely better than the others, as it is a matter of taste of what type of games you like.

I enjoyed this show, but I have to say, this is the first episode where I've agreed with other (previous) statements that Cheapy talks over Wombat too much. Maybe it was just because he was feeling rushed for the BBC stuff, but all too often, Cheapy said his thing and moved on, or asked Wombat for his opinion but didn't let him get it all out.

While I was driving home today (and listening to the actual part of the cast where Cheapy announced it), I for some reason thought of my brother and please please please please Cheapy don't give your son some name because it's "funny." My last name is pronounced "pilot." My brother named his son Otto. Otto Maddock "Pilot" (automatic pilot). If you do something like that to your son, I'll honestly stop listening to the show. ;)

All three consoles do have rather solid holiday line-ups this year, but you can't deny that the 360 has the strongest line-up when it comes to first and third party titles. Halo 3 is undoubtly the biggest game comming out this year, Mass Effect is one of the most talked about games comming out this year from E3, Bioshock, PGR4, Half-Life 2 Orange Box, and Blue Dragon all look amazing. Not to mention the EA sports games will run at 60 fps opposed to the PS3 versions running at 30 fps and the 360 will be getting the better version of GTA IV.

Sony probably has the weakest line-up this holiday season despite having some great looking titles, none of them are going to sell systems like games like Halo 3, Mass Effect, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Mario Galaxy will.

Despite this though we all know that Nintendo will continue to dominate throughout the Christmas season. Look at how well they are doing with next to no worthwhile games out, just imagine when they have the three games every Nintendo fanboy has been having wet dreams about for the past couple of years.

Funny how gamespot, Ign and 1Up all said that sony had the best conference and nintendo had the worst.

After watching all 3, I'll go with the big sites on that topic. And wombat the head guy making MGS4 has gone on record saying that he misses the old format of E3 and hates the new version. I think that has alot to do with him not playing it at E3.

1. Half Life Orange box is coming out for PS3 as well.
2. People bought Madden on PS2 and Xbox when it played only at 30 fps, and I don't think the average consumer even knows about that, so while it is an issue, not a big one.
3. The episodic content for GTA IV won't be out till next year so that doesn't factor in.
4. I will agree with you, name wise MS has the best line-up when it comes to having the most recognizable games, however, game quality wise it's hard to make that arguement as there are NO exclusive action or platforming games coming out this year for 360, and as a fan of those type of games, the 360 line-up does not have me that excited.

episodic content matters when the game is released because people will be deciding which version to buy when it comes out and thats all that matters when looking at "this holiday season"

you shouldn't throw in the lbp demo, and gt5 prologue in that list as they are not like the other titles.

I don't think that hot shots golf, haze, folklore and eye of judgement have the same buzz as any of these titles.

I agree with you on the rest of your ps3 list looking good though.

No, I'd agree that MS has the best lineup of first and third person shooters this holiday (and I include Mass Effect in there - doesn't look like an RPG to me). If you are into those types of games (like Cheapy and many others on this site) then it is a no-brainer that they have the best. For others it appears more balanced as the other two, while having less (potential!) AAA titles, have a better variety of games.

Hey CheapyD, congrats on the kid. You are now living the full dream; living in Japan, married an Asian girl, living off video games and ya got a kid along the way. CONGRATS!

Now for my point, ya mention MGS4 a lot but sometimes don't realize that some of your info is a bit off. It's mostly opinion of course but just incase I thought I'd write some quick points incase they help you see what MGS is all about. (Since its not an easy game to get into)

-All MGS games except Portable Ops, used a real time engine to show their cinematics. Which means that the graphics in the cinematics are the same graphics used while in game play.

-Also I dont know why many MGS fans never noticed this but game play footage was actually showed a while back ago. I think it was TGS, not sure. It did have a very cinematic feel but at the end of the day it was game play. Not sure why people disregarded this video.

-Wombat says he doesn't like to stand still in games. Well MGS doesnt have to be played as a stealth game. You can actually just shoot your way through enemies. Sure you will die a bit more but I know its possible because I've done it. Sometimes I really wanted to see what would happen next in the story and I didn't have time to hide in a locker.

-The whole punching of the testicle thing was pretty much Kojima's humor at work. MGS is a very serious game so Kojima does his best to try and not make the series feel so up tight. Which reminds me you noticed all the ball grabbing but made no mention of the now flip able girly magazines. Shame.

-Guns of the Patriots is really a subtitle only MGS fans can recognize. Really big to the story and would be a huge spoiler for anyone who is just getting into the series.

-The reason MGS wasn't showed in E3 by my opinion is that it was more important for Kojima to show it at the 20th anniversary party. That's just a guess though.

-Many fans describe MGS as an interactive movie, not sure how truthful that statement is but I do know that not a single fan of the series wants shorter cinematics. I think we were all mad when MGS3 featured less cinematics. It truly is a brilliant story.

Well that's all I think I should say. There's probably more but this is long enough as it is. We all have our opinions so this game might just not be for you guys.

I really enjoy the CAGcast and can't wait to listen to the next one. Keep up the good work.

I want to thank you for talking about this week's Circuit City deal with the 1600 point cards on the podcast. It's rare that you talk about upcoming cheap ass deals, and since I don't frequent the forums much, I often miss out on these great finds.

Thanks for giving me half a week of heads up time - I was able to check the stickied thread, get the lowdown, and bought four 1600 point cards before the rest of the internet caught fire and figured out what the CAGs have known for weeks.

:applause:

As always, keep up the fine work; if there's anything I would like more of, it would be more updates on the hot finds in the Deals forum. I know you've said in the past you don't like to do deal talk because most often the deals are dead by the time the podcast goes out, but I enjoy them nonetheless.

pfft, sorry Cheapy but i disagree, Nintendo had the WORST press conference. i wanted to bail 3 times when i was watching it live. their presentations for the games were half-assed. all they really focused on, aside from their constant gloating was WiiFit. it was lame and boring.

Sony and MS's press conference had actual game demos and some exciting trailers. you are wrong.

Just listened recently and congrats Cheapy!

Other than that great show, but Wombat is nuts for thinking Jade Empire was Bioware's best Xbox game, unless there was a better version that was released that I somehow missed. The combat was far too simple, and had the easiest final boss battle in the history of gaming. Plus while the early levels had long and engaging storylines, the last couple felt short and rushed. KOTOR, FTW.

Great show this week , last week was kind of a bust this one was the show that should of been last weeks.

Anyhow Congratulations on little cheapy on the way. Also what kind of name are you planing for him a more of a Japanese name or a American name?

Also about MGS4 , Kojima wanted to do an on stage demo at Sony Press Confrence , but Sony said no to it. They wanted Killzone to be the head name talked about at their Press Conference.

Of course Congratulations once again and would love to hear about names you have in store for little Cheapy.

Congrats Cheapy! You got one past the goalie :)

I was completely and pleasantly surprised that you would choose a CAGCast to make the big announcement. As a dad I can attest to the many great things that await you and Mrs Cheapy and while you will hear many scary tales of parenthood (loss of sleep, no time, diapers) don't be intimidated by them and if you are half the man you are on the CAGCast you'll make a great dad.

And believe people when they tell you your life will change. As a gamer I had to make adjustments (buying more kids games, only playing M rated games at night, etc) but all that pales to the positive such when my 3 yrd old got to see Guitar Hero for the first time.

Tell Mrs Cheapy to enjoy the Japanese hospitals which I hear are way better than american ones for giving birth. And don't forget to do all the heavy lifting for Mrs Cheapy!

First of all, congrats on your recent success, both on Digg and with the podcast awards. The CAGCast is right up there among my favorite videogame podcasts, alongside 1Up Yours. One segment I think you guys could borrow, and would benefit from, is the 1Up Crew's Whatcha Been Playing?. I know you both mention games you have been playing throughout the show, but a more detailed and structured segment would allow for more of your gaming experiences (and opinions) to be shared with the listeners.

Just a thought, keep up the good work!

FYI to quote the 1up yours podcast from 7/20:

"...The Playstation show in Japan the next day [after E3] where all the 3rd party games were was the big fuck you to Santa Monica E3..."

They also stated that most of the Japanese Press wasn't invited to this year's E3 which may explain why Kojima left out the shiny gameplay trailer from E3. Why would he showcase has best stuff when the press he actually cares about namely Japanese press wasn't there?

Wow...I go out of town for a week and this happens. Congrats, Cheapy clan! Now you'll join the likes of Crecente, Ashcraft, Gabe, and Tycho in the "Game Web site icons with kids" category. I think at least some credit should be given to the Rez Trance Vibrator.

Give the little guy a good real world name, but I think around here we should call him Cheapy Wee (then again, might be hard to get that past Nintendo's lawyers). Also, please refrain from videotaping the birth and putting it on YouTube. The marital friction it will cause is not worth the Diggs.

Incidentally, tomorrow is my birthday and my wife just happens to be ovulating at the same time. So we thought we'd roll the baby dice, just for fun. If nothing comes of it, we'll wait til next year to start trying in earnest. Why do I feel like Luke as he's about to make his Death Star trench run?

The intro music was one of the best. I remember playing the shit out of PaRappa the Rapper back in the day. I only would've needed 2 questions to guess the Mrs. Cheapy was knocked up, Shame on you Wombat. Just what we need another Cheapy walking around filming unboxing videos. Wombat, wonder what game you will pick? Let us know.

Sorry for being somewhat late, but congrats Cheapy! (Although, is it wrong of me to imagine Mrs. Cheapy breaking the news to you with subtle hints, ala to Bruce Willis in Pulp Fiction?)

Soon, you'll realize that sleep will become a form of currency during midnight feedings and such. ("I'll get this one if you rub my feet in the morning...)

Totally worth it though. My son turns 4 in a few weeks and he's already beaten Golden Axe on XBL. (In fact, he figured out not only how to download movies and games, but how to buy MS Points. He then figured out how to reconnect the wireless adapter when I tried to put a stop to that. I even had to give him his own gamer tag when I realize I now have friends in Japan and Mexico on my friends list...)

When he gets older and you have someone to game with, it is so cool - it kinda re-ignites some of the excitement when watching him play something like Super Mario Bros for the first time and figuring out things in the game that we have known for 20 years and have taken for granted...

EDIT: Thank you for mentioning what a waste themes are now! I bought a Dead Rising theme (the Jessie one, which is supposed to be fan service), andthere is just no point to the themes anymore. Everything ends up totally covered! (I checked out a few other themes I had gotten in the past, such as PDZ, and while most of them are just ugly, the ads on top just make them uglier. I ended up just going back to the Glass theme...)
