I'd make a joke about how much this DotD sucks, but it would probably ring redundant considering your current thoughts.

A crossword puzzle collection....for $20. Yeah...no thanks amazon.

If I want to do some crossword puzzles, I'll go down to the local bookstore and buy a crossword puzzle book for a few bucks.

It's worth noting that this scored a 8.0 on Gamespot and that these include over 1,000 puzzles featured in the New York Times. As far as branding goes, if you were to pay for a book of 1,000 puzzles from the New York Times (the premium of all cross word puzzles) you'd probably pay around this price.

The game is normally $29.99, the book is normally $17.95. Twelve dollar difference right there. Even then, the game's still more expensive than the book itself.

I like this game. You can use one cartridge to play co-op with a friend or even against one another. Race each other to get the most letters correct on the same crossword... or work together on the same crossword to finish in record time. And if you don't have friends, it does rate you on how quickly you solved certain puzzles (though it's very hard for me to get higher than a C on most of them). It actuallt has decent handwriting recognition. Very cool game. You shouldn't knock it until you try it.

A crossword game on the DS sounds interesting to me, especially if it's as good as AngelicLulu described. However, I have a feeling this is eventually gonna end up in the bargain bins for $10 or even $5 sooner or later.

I have this game and love it. If you enjoy crosswords at all, it's worth the money, especially at this price. The clues are more inventive and clever than your standard paperback crossword collection. The difficulty ramps up from Monday to Sunday, but there are hints available if you really get stuck, unlike a paper puzzle. Plus a DS is a lot easier to carry around than a thick book and a pencil.

As for downloadable content, it would just take them extra time and money to implement. And why would they bother when they can just release NYT Crosswords Vol. 2?

I would buy this except for 2 reasons:

1. I'm broke and,
2. Even if I had the $20, The New York Times crosswords are legendary for being difficult and I'm not sure how well I'd handle the frustration.

You know I think at least half the people in this thread have no idea what that even means...

People do a search this "game" was widely discussed in the DS forums the New York Times are the benchmark of Crosswords.

You can select the difficulty, from easiest (monday) to most difficult...

Also you can use a "hint" which tells you the letter in the grid you've requested so you don't have that typical terrible frustration with a crossword.

Finally, many of you clearly have not noticed, but the DS is smaller and more convienent than a book of crosswords, a pen and a light.

Yes, but for some of us, even the Monday puzzles are too hard. :) I tried this game and it is well done, but for me, I need an internet connection to be able to finish any of the puzzles. I have to look stuff up. I suppose if I could afford an iPhone (and $60 a month service) it would be cool, though. :)

I was just going to buy this today at Gamestop (assuming any nearby had it)

I actually own that 1000 puzzle book, but as you can imagine it's a little huge. This thing would fit my needs perfectly

Thanks for the headsup

if you like crosswords, this is a great game. yes, i can nitpick some of it's interface, but i won't b/c that'll probably be taken too seriously.

if you don't like crosswords, why even comment on this game?

--
aside from the portability, the 2 important advantages that the DS version has over any book are:
1. hints - fill in a letter
2. can re-do completed crosswords later to get a better rating

This game gets heavy rotation on my DS, but I enjoy crossword puzzles (especially the NYT puzzles).

I don't really like the font they chose, and there's no way to change it, but everything else is nicely done. The handwriting recognition works amazingly well, even though I never use it. The keyboard interface is just faster.

You can enter a key combination at the main menu (Up, Up, Down, Down, B, B, Y, Y) to change the colors to black and white so the game looks like a "real" newspaper crossword puzzle - charming, if fairly useless.

The puzzles are definitely hard - for me, at least. I can ace the Monday and Tuesday selections, but I go rapidly downhill from there. I enjoy the challenge, though, so that's quite alright with me.

I think it's a great value for more than 1000 NYT crossword puzzles, but I understand that it's not everyone's cup-o-tea.

Just chiming in to say that this game is awesome. I paid full MSRP for it about a month ago and after two transatlantic flights I'm glad I did. There's litterally thousands of hours of 'gameplay' here. It even got the Mrs. to pick up the DS.

However if you don't like / can't do crosswords you'd be advised to stay away.

This is an awesome game. Picked it up 2 weeks ago with GCO for around the same price. If I didn't have it I would be in for 1. I might still buy one for the Mrs' DS. I can make it through Wednesday. Forget about Thurday through Sunday. Those can get ridiculous. The Brain Buster Puzzles are fun because they are a mix of the weeks. Overall a great game. Recommended to anyone that enjoys a challenge.

Yeah, why all the hate? It's a great price on the game ($35/$30 down to $20), and this isn't "CheapAssBooks." :) I'm tempted by the price, but I need to save my money for everything else this fall.

Crosswords = Good
New York Times = Bad

Pass.

NYT is one of the best papers available nationally. Those who don't agree are those who are ideologically afraid of encountering something that might shatter their narrow-minded world bubble, and those who never read it.

Their crosswords are incredibly difficult, IMO, and I, for one, hated the layout of this game. Crosswords are great, and perfect for the DS, contrary to most people's snarkiness about this game being a "nongame." This cart didn't do it for me, IMO.

Nevertheless, I'm of the opinion that this game should have started at $20 in retail, so if I ever do pick it up, I'll wait for $10 or so.

Maybe so, but if you're paying higher for something that's available at a cheaper price elsewhere, then that's not being a very good CAG. :P

Hmmm...I can usually only do the NYTimes xwords up till Thursday, then they get too hard for me. I guess I could probably only do about 500 of the puzzles and I have so many xwords books that I have probably done most of them.

This game has intrigued me. I haven't done a crossword in years, but I did enjoy them when I did them from time to time. If I can find this for $15 or less I'll probably pick it up. It'll come in handy this fall with all the traveling for the holidays.

If I got this, I would end up with a dozen or so half solved puzzles (and I'm giving myself a lot of credit there) and then I'd lose interest. Those fuckers are tough.

I bought this game when it launched for MSRP. Totally love it. But then again I love trivia and crossword puzzles. The handwriting recognition is pretty great, and aside from some of the color choices, I like the way the game plays. Hints are just a button away, and you are penalized for using them when you are scored.

It's obviously not for everybody, but I would much rather do crosswords on the DS than with a smelly pencil and filthy newsprint. Erasing mistakes is a bitch on the real thing. Here it's easy and clean.

I bought this a couple of weeks ago with the EB/GS $5 off a used DS game coupon.

I wasn't sure I was going to like it, and I thought it might be too hard for me.

It's really exceeded all my expectations. I'm currently chugging through the Monday puzzles. It's very addictive and while the interface has some quirks, it's quick and easy to use and I enjoy it far more than a pencil and paper crossword.

I thought I might dislike not seeing all the clues at once, but it's been good for me -- it makes me go around the board and not just zoom in on the ones I know right off the bat. I'm getting a pretty good intuition for things now -- I hope it will help me on the other days of the week.

Already, it has given me far more entertainment value in terms of time spent vs. dollars than most games, and I've barely scratched the surface.

That arguement makes no sense. I'm trying to justify the worthiness of this deal. It was a 33 % drop for a brand new game. It's not that bad, and the handwriting recognition supposed to work real well.
It's rated well and for those looking for crossword play, it's a good deal. Get over it.
However, I will admit that this deal won't appeal to nearly anyone.

I'll give you that, despite their flaws, they are one of the best. You just have to make sure to read the entire articles, especially for the hidden information toward the end.

Which means you need to treat it like every other newspaper.
