No I think that is the shity (last time I went) mall. That place is a dump.
Holyoke Mall is in Holyoke which is off I-91 between Springfield and Northampton.

I'll just double post it here...
The Holyoke Mall TRU...
Polarid or whatever the DS puzzle game is called was $5, Metriod Prime Pinball and Trace Memory were 50% of $35.
They had at least a hundred Baiten whatever it is called for the GC, but it was still $25.
They also had some cheap, cheap PS2 DDR pads, no price through.
Oh and they had a GBA Poker game for $3, but I still thought that was a ripoff, and this Pinball game, worth which I heard were terrible.

The Downtown Strawberries story (boston) has a few Xbox 360 games used for $39.99. Condemned, Madden, Need for Speed, and I think Fifa. The best part is that they have a 20% off used dvd/games promo going on too.

Sam's Club in Natick had Premium 360 Bundles.
Premium System, extra wireless controller, and Play N' Charge Kit for $449.99.
I'm not too familiar with 360 prices so I can't really tell you the deal quality but they ahve them so that's something.

Almost one month without a reply. This is so sad.
The Sears at Cambridgeside still has games locked under glass and key that might warrant a visit to check for things from the ongoing 50% clearance if no one's been there lately.
On a side note: Anyone remember seeing a Red Octane Drum Controller around these parts? That ugly box seems familiar, but I can't recall where I may have passed it by.

AnyBody checkout the Virgin meagastore closing yet?
I was there earlier. They had GTA Triple Pack for $9.99 (!) over the weekend, but they are long gone now.
I saw
Harry Potter (ps2, the first one I think) $4.99
Lord of the Rigns the Third Age (xbox) 4.99
Odama $9.99
King of Fighters 2002/2003 $9.99
Burnout Revenge (xb0x) most tagged at $9.99, some tagged at $4.99
Urbz (xbox) Most tagged at $4.99
Mad Maestro (tons of copies) 4.99
Codename: Kids Next Door $4.99
Metroid Prime 2 $9.99
Davinci Code $9.99
Pokemon XD $9.99
NFL Street (xbox) $4.99
I can't remember the rest, most weren't that good, although I seen someone walk out with Mega Man Collection X for $9.99.
Most of the other games are regular priced with a 25% discount.
Hibiwa
10-03-2006, 01:29 AM
They had new stuff marked down over the weekend and the place was packed. One guy had a basket overflowing with games -- he didn't look like he was buying for his personal collection either.
Other games include:
Outlaw Golf 2 $4.99 for PS2 and XBOX
Phantasy Star Online 2 and 3 for $4.99 XBOX
Star Wars Battlefront II XBOX (no price, but mixed in with other $4.99)
Sims Bustin Out ?
Sims 2 ?
The Guy Game $4.99
Goldeneye Rogue Agent $4.99 XBOX
Some sports games
Some random GBA games (Ty 2 $4.99)
What's confusing about this sale is you don't really know how much something costs because they have to manually override whatever scans up. Moreso for the stuff that's marked at their regular price, which would mean 25% off, but some games actually belong in the $4.99 group which nets another 30% off.
And if you end up at a register with someone new/clueless, it could be bad. No way to check before hitting the lines either.
Don't remember seeing any GC games, or $9.99 prices, so those must be newer or a lot older.

But most of those $4.99 games are now being retagged with $9.99 stickers. No more great bargains (unless it still scans cheaper) and only 25% OFF for all videogames/electronics.

Picked up the guy game (xbox) and nba street v3 (gamecube) for $5 each. Got the lotr return of the king box for $15, no idea why it was that cheap since the sticker said 80 and 50% off would be $40. Also picked up a couple cd's for half price.
One odd thing that happened was, after purchasing that, I found a dharma and greg season 1 dvd in one of those rolling carts, and it was priced at $40. Figured it would be $20 since dvd's were 50% off. So I take it up to the register and say "can you price check this? A few of the things I purchased earlier came up at more than 50% off". It came up at $20 but the guy says "alright, I'll give it to you" and manually took off another 50%, so I only paid $10 bucks.
The person I was shopping with bought a bunch of tv series dvd's and did not get the extra 50% (or 75% off total), and just paid the advertised half price. So I don't really no why the guy did that, but I'm glad he did.

10 each!? Damn, you didn't even get the 25% OFF for videogames? Aren't signs for it plastered all around?
It's pretty half-assed if they are continuing to go in reverse on sale prices as it gets closer to the end. Not to rub salt, but Half-Life 2 could have been about $3.50 after discounts (before tax) when the closeout began if you found one stickered at $4.99.
Then again, they contradict each other with or without the signs anyway. Total crapshoot.
On a videogame related note....

You mean the store? At the corner (end) of Newbury St. and Mass. Ave. It's 360 Newbury St. ...right above the Hynes Convention stop on the Green Line if that helps.
BTW, their pricing is still screwy. The $9.99 games are now supposed to be "Final Prices" as marked -- at least according to those cheap handwritten signs. Problem is some aren't marked or marked differently than the same game next to it.
It doesn't hold water for the games with only original stickers because then those would get to be "50% OFF" the price on the upc tags. Or not. YMMV.
Bah.

You have to give a license or cell phone or something of value in exchange for the Wii remote. It is not attached to the system at all. I especially want to know if you are the one meekly hiding behind the paper as the cop is screaming at you 12 inches away from your face with a megaphone. Thanks to the Globe for running that pic. ROTFLMAO.

I got the penny guides in the BB's in Dedham and Braintree. BB in Watertown is tough to get guides at, and Brockton is just annoying (they always have to ask a manager), though it was the only place i could get the Prey guide.
On a different note, do any of you guys know of any good pawn shops with games? I'm from Canton (go to school in Waltham) and used to go to one called Trader's Mart in Brockton, but it isn't that great. There is another pawn shop with games in Taunton, but it is a little pricey. The best deal I got from there was Jedi Outcast on the Cube for like $6, though it had no case and manual.

A little rumor that I've heard through a BB associate. If you haven't noticed, the Cambridgeside Galleria BB has been closed for like 2 weeks. A water pipe burst in the store and pretty much destroyed the place. Word is though that BB is on it's way out there, and that's why they're trying to pick up the old Virgin Megastore locale (on MassAve/Newbury). I think it's a bit foolish considering Landmark is a 15 minute walk from it (and 2 T stops away). But apparently they think there's enough unique business from the MassAve area and Newbury street that doesn't go to Fenway. I may flop stores since I live closer, but it's a really tiny place, so we'll see.

Yeah the water thing was pretty crazy. They closed a good chunk of the street and it made for awful morning traffic. Any idea if they are planning to re-open before closing indefinitely, or are they pretty much done?

FYI for anyone in SE Mass. who doesn't have the original Phoenix Wright yet--I picked this up at the Brockton TRU for $19.99 the other day, and there were probably at least 4 or 5 copies left. Definitely worth a look if you're in the area.

That sucks. I used to be an ASM there for a long time. I even got my Wii there.
Were you there before or after the GS buyout? There was only one guy that was the assistant manager? (post takeover) that worked most days up until the EB closed.
The Copley EB was a great escape from the clothing stores. Better organized and easier to navigate than the way crowded overemployed Pru GS.
Need to add some spit for sending my EB preorder into limbo with no notice. I guess I have to head over to GS and ask for my $5. I can right?
I only found that EB a few weeks before they closed. Really pissed me off when they left. I work across the street from the convention center, so it's nice to have a game store nearby, but the GS in the Pru really sucks. Poor layout, pushy staff, and terrible selection.
The manager there is particularly bad. Up until last August, I spent four years managing an EB in western MA, so I know the sales pitches by heart. After getting hit with every line in the book by this guy, I finally tell him that I was a former manager, figuring that he would lay off, knowing that it's a waste of time. Instead of stopping, he tells me "Oh, then you know all about what a great deal preordering is. What can I put you down for?"
I also heard the ASM bragging about how he'd won a $100 bet because a kid got shot and killed over a PS3. This was in the middle of a crowded store at Christmas time.
I hate that store, and if there was any other convenient option in the area, I'd stay out for good. I hope the Best Buy moves into the Tower Records spot soon.

Anyway I don't spend more than $20 for games so I'm always looking around for deals. Other than the KMart in Somerville (killer7 for $10 etc) and a few $15 games at CC in Somerville I have not found any good spots for clearance items. The Sears at Cambridgeside has nothing.

Agreed, pretty much the only store I ever go to is Landmark BB, which is a black hole for any deals given the foot traffic in there. I end up even buying the stuff on sale in a week or two ahead of time and going back and price matching since they're so often out of what's on sale.

Went to Landmark and Cambridgeside recently and both are pathetic. I did manage to find the old Transformers game for $10. That was a nice surprise.
I imagined the redo would give the mall store a boost, but nope, it still blows. The old airplane hangar feel is intact. Now it comes with lighter grey carpeting and angled aisles. W00t! Bleh.
Let's hope the Newbury St. store becomes the flagship, but I doubt it. It's going to have even MORE foot traffic to thwart any deal finding.

The only reason I venture to Landmark is because I am in college at NU, and I don't have a car, so right now, it's the only place within walking distance. (When Newbury opens that'll be closer for me, but I'll probably still hit up Landmark).
The thing with Newbury is that it won't even be a full store. It's going to be like 1/3 the size of Landmark or Cambridgeside (if you ever visited the Virgin Megastore when it was there, it has a decent sized first floor and two tiny floors above it. It seems much more like it'll be a yuppie version of Best Buy with a ton of CDs, DVDs and plasma tvs.

Virgin Mega actually had a decent footprint for fitting everything in nicely. The big box BB's and CC's are too cavernous IMO -- lots of wasted space. The layout bugs me for some reason so I'm biased against the latter two.
If you are up for an adventure to South Bay Mall to hit up BB, CC and Target at once, take the #10 bus from Copley (St. James St., across from the Fairmont Copley Hotel) for a quick and rather painless ride directly there. Reverse direction and you're safely back in the Back Bay.
That is a more preferred route over the Red Line to Andrew Station and then hopping on a shuttle or one of the other buses to the mall.

There is a brick and mortar store in Revere, MA called AC's Sports Cards. It's near the beach and forget the street name, go look it up. They have good cash/credit ratio and usually can work out a straight up deal.

Back Bay BB has opened their revolving door.
July 27, 2007 marks the assimilation of the once funky corner into blue shirt central.
No game deals found. Hoped for a stash of frontlane games and sadly didn't see anything.
It's nice and clean, but so devoid of the character and charm of Tower and Virgin.
The aggressively cheery drones trying to make you want help was tiring at every turn. Must be armed with deflector shields and perform evasive maneuvers!
It really felt uncomfortable and sterilized on my first visit.
Anyone else gonna stop in for a peek? And yeah, the sight of these uniformed pod people spreading out onto neighboring streets on their way to lunch, etc. was weird. It's like they were escaping the institution in different sized groups.

You know how the newer BBs look like they were dropped into an airplane hangar. It's not that.

So I went. Pretty underwhelming. It really did feel like they had a pretty small selection, but its also the first time I saw Wiis in stock at a store. Hell, when I went to checkout, someone had just gotten a Wii.
Their game section was pretty good, and they had GHII set up (PS2).. with no memory card. They also had a Wii set up, which was a nice touch, but you can only do VC stuff via Classic Controller. (The Wiimote was in a plastic box attached to shelf)
Their anime DVD selection was pretty crappy. They didn't have a whole lot, mostly newer release stuff. Not alot of boxes either, which sucked.
Did pick up that flyer with a coupon for $10 GC with $100 purchase. Might go scan that later.

Its a much shorter walk than 15 minutes, its right across the bridge. There is a large shopping center there as well, with a Target, FYE, even a Chucky Cheese. Very accessible from Wellington. You do have to venture across a busy street to get to Bestbuy, but there is a set of lights.
In the opposite direction from Wellington there is a new Gamestop and some other stores, that new 'station landing' development. They've got a pedestrian bridge right at the station.
The South Bay Center in Dorchester is right off Andrew Station, they have a free shuttle bus but its only a quick walk. Theres a Target, Bestbuy, Circuit City, I believe an Office Max, and some others. Bad neighborhood, though.
For a while my only shopping option on the T was the Galleria, at least now there are a couple other places to try. Anyone else know of any good malls or areas to shop on the T? Downtown Crossing isn't real appealing anymore.

Yeesh, you actually thought Downtown Crossing was appealing at some point!? It's always been ghetto. Everything is increasingly rundown or closed up. Wait till Filene's Basement closes up for the construction and it will be worse.
Tommy Menino is kidding himself with thoughts of revitalization.
Anyways, Harvard Square T stop gets you to some shopping in the area. There's Tokyo Kid (http://www.tokyokid.com/) at the Garage Mall for anime, import games, toys and such. Good for a browse even if you don't buy.
Then hop back on the Red Line to Porter Sq. and go to the Porter Exchange building and grab a bite at one of the Japanese or Korean (ChoCho's is the only Korean one) mini restataurant stalls for your ramens, bentos, etc. Pick up some grocery/snack items at Kotobukiya market and it's a day.
Other regular malls accessible by T would be Watertown Mall, Arsenal Mall (same street about a block away from Watertown Mall) and the Dedham Mall for the likes of either Target, Best Buy, FYE, GS and even a TRU at the latter. Never been to the Dedham Mall actually. Or at least I don't remember ever going by T. You have to hop on a bus from Forest Hills Station at the end of the Orange Line. There's also another Circuit City and Home Depot at Assembly Square Mall in Somerville where they also have a Kmart and Christmas Tree Shop for cheap junk. Some of these are an adventure to get to.
Haven't tried it myself, but you can also access Natick Mall aka whatever they're trying to upgrade the name to nowadays after remodeling and putting in higher end clothing retailers, etc. and Framingham's Shopper's World supposedly by Commuter Rail for a few bucks more than the average T fare.
Of course, I prefer online shopping where there is no border and no need to set foot onto a grimy, slimy and sometimes crowded MBTA transport of your choice.

I remember back in the 80s Downtown Crossing still had some appeal, but even then it was fading fast.
Haven't been to the Porter exchange building in a while, but I know of it. I'm mainly concerned with shopping within walking distance of train stations, anywhere on a bus is a hike. Used to go to Assembly Square back when it was a mall, and the Arsenal Mall once in a while, but thats very run down now too.

Ongoing boos to Back Bay BB for not carrying frontlane games.
All the enthusiastic help must have quit too. Never seen so many indifferent monkeys huddled together to avoid customers. One cow walked away with no apology to the adjacent register because the other one got confused.

Today I discovered that as a belated grand opening sale, the Medford Gamestop is doing a buy 2 get 1 free used game sale, valid on all used games for all systems. The clerk wasn't sure how long the sale would go for, but thought it would be until the 16th. He said the sale isn't going on at any other stores or online.
This store is located in the Station Landing shopping/apartment complex by the Wellington stop on the Orange line.
I decided to add to my Gamecube collection: I got Battalion Wars, Star Wars Rogue Leader, and Viewtiful Joe for $19!
Hope this saves someone some $$$
For anyone who hasn't picked up Halo 3, if you can find a used copy at Newbury Comics they're going for $39.99.

I think the de facto agreed-upon arcade of choice in the area is Good Times (Assembly Sq., Somerville) with regard to games, so long you don't mind risk of being murdered every weekend.
Not sure about import spots.
As for living, depends where you gotta be or what you gotta do. If you're a student, you'll probably rock the roommate thing unless you wanna drop 1K plus for a shit studio in Allston/Brighton. Further you are from the city, further you are from a T-Stop, the cheaper your crib is going to be. Most kids I know live out on the Green Line, but both ends of the Red Line are popular, too. I'd stay away from most of Roxbury if you value your life and livelihood. What's your financial situation like? Are you going to school or working someplace?

Definitely, sounds like you've got it under control. I think most people instantly do the Craigslist thing but I've had better success checking out the websites of area businesses.
For example, I work in healthcare and had success checking staff postings, accessible via the net: http://healthcare.partners.org/housing/housing.asp

I don't think there are any gamerushes in MA at this time...I do believe Blockbuster is planning on expanding it though, so hopefully soon.

If anyone is looking for GTAIV Special for PS3, South Bay Center BB has like 6 of them left. Got one myself today.

Is/did anyone go to the Mario Kart thing at City Hall today/yesterday? How is it? I'm considering heading down there.

This is a longshot but has anyone seen Wiis around Boston proper or Watertown? Maybe Cambridge? I'm really starting to itch for one.

Somerville Store #4111

Somerville, MA 02145
