Roger Ebert needs to play this fucking game, it's a work of art! Nobody can deny that after they've played just a few minutes of it. Loved the feeling of the game, took a lot of time just looking at random stuff in the game.

Fantastic demo. Far better than anything else I've seen this year. The demo makes it a must buy--maybe even day one, which I never do.

didn't really have trouble downloading the demo, didn't exactly time it but probably under an hour or so to finish the download.

anyway the game looked great a definite buy at release game for me. As said before the atmosphere is very well done, got creeped out at some parts but mainly due to the fact that I get scared easily

Great visuals, great sound to accompany, great setting, and what appears to be a great story.

Amazing game, but not for me :-( I just never got in to the whole creepy game kinda thing. Doesn't mean I don't think this is an amazing game though. Very well done.

I see this as being a game where I will play for about 10 hours straight the day I get it.

Wow, I got it downloaded in like under an hour i think last light. It's a great demo, yeah, and I find it hilarious that aparently you can get drunk, even if only for 5 seconds. Quickest buzz ever.

Yeah, great demo though. Loved it. I'm not getting it day one though, maybe a couple weeks after.

The water effects are top notch. And I like the whole art-deco look of the city.

I like the whole art-deco look of the city.

That's the first thing that drew me in (along with the glimpse of the underwater Ayn Rand-inspired dystopia). What ambience!

The game is at beautiful and atmospheric as I expected. Just gorgeous and creepy. a little less interactive (in the environment) than I expected, but that's about the only negative I've found so far.

Did anyone notice (I suppose it's a spoiler, but want to keep kids happy) that Andrew Ryan looked stunningly similar to Orson Wells?

Wow all I have to say is Wow. That was definately worth all the trouble. But this demo actually made it worse for me, now I reallly can't wait for August 21st. Also did anyone have trouble in the room with the security turret? I died there several times trying to beat that room.

Also did anyone else notice the dead big daddy? I just wonder what killed it.

Got to 84% by background downloading for something like 7 hours. Then I wake up and it says you can't download this item. Now I'm back to 3% and crawling again. I love paying for premium services when people paying nothing have the demo already.

What! This is fucking bullshit. I leave my 360 on low power download all night, and it didn't go up at all! It just stayed at 33%! So not only did I probably shave a year off my 360's life, but it didn't benefit me at all. fucking. bull. shit.

08-13-2007, 10:17 AM
Yeah, this download was ridiculous. Between this and the trouble I had getting Stranglehold, I don't know what MS is doing. I started it at like 11 last night, let it download in standby all night, and it was at 92% this morning. I had to cancel and re-download it like 5 times for it to finally finish...

seanr1221
08-13-2007, 10:19 AM
I just deleted it and restarted the whole thing. I'm convinced this will pretty much kill my 360 though.

They really need to institute lines for big downloads like this. That way the people who start the download first get their shit done in a timely manner and so does everyone else who downloads (they may have to wait to download, but once it starts it goes fast).

And myke did you watch the opening video (not the one in game, but at the menu)? When they pan down there is a KNO radio station featured prominently.

seanr1221
08-13-2007, 10:30 AM
I just don't know what happened this time. I went from midnight till now (9:30am) and look where I'm at. 1% because I had to start over. On one hand I'm happy BioShock, but on the other I'm pissed if this kills my 360 before Halo 3

I guess in retrospect though, I shouldn't have left it on all night.

If they institute lines, they'll need to prioritize both the first to log on and start downloads (obviously), and also prioritize Gold over Silver members, lest they infuriate those who are paying for the service.

I noticed what you mentioned in the spoiler, but I'm afraid I miss the reference. If anything, it reminds me of RKO, whose stations broadcast War of the Worlds originally.

I think there should be a peer to peer like service as well where if you finished downloading the game, you can help upload it as well to other members.

VanillaGorilla
08-13-2007, 10:45 AM
I would rather just wait the extra week and rent the game, instead of blowing the initial amazement period on a demo. When I play this game the FIRST time, I want to be able to do EVERYTHING, with the full retail copy. Playing a demo of BioShock is like art fans back in the day getting a "sneak peek" of the Mona Lisa before it's even finished.

god no I hate that peer to peer crap I always get worse downloads from that than I do from the source. WoW does this and it makes a 30 meg patch take an hr sometimes just due to losing connection with other gamers and waiting to pick up another freaking miserable! >_<

P.S. Sorry if that came out harsh I"m just very touchy about peer to peer downloads as you can see they commonly don't work well for me.

No worries :).

I see your point, but I am saying if they allow that in addition to their own private servers. That way if the servers are getting hammered, it would automatically switch them to other people. It can only benefit you.

I didn't even checkif mine finished or not. I used the low-power download method last night (I LOVE that feature). I guess XBOX Live went down last night, so that is why some may have been stuck. I was 22% after 45 minutes last night before I shut it down to low power mode.

Is there a lot of 'gameplay' in the demo like shooting, using your powers etc or is it mostly just exploration?

Sc4rfac3
08-13-2007, 11:00 AM
You guys had problems getting it. I got it in no time at all last night as soon as my bro said it was up. This game is fucking awesome. i gotta buy it first day it comes out. Its not a lot of shooting but its enough to keep you happy.

I am excited so many of you guys are excited considering I thought not many of you played and 'Shock' games. If your looking for a great title to tide you over for one week and scare the living shit out of you (im serious) do yourself a favor and play system shock 2. I dont normally recommend it but theres a torrent of it and the game is top notch. The demo is amazing but hey we knew it would be.

Scorch will back me up on that.

All in all I have been waiting 8 years for this game cause I knew after system shock 2 they weren't done.

I have to say the texture work is phenominal and so is the lighting. Great radiosity and normal mapping.

I tried downloading this last night and it did not move an inch. This is one of the first downloads I had trouble with in a while. The last one I recall was crackdown demo.

Well I am going to wait this one out and download it at a later date. I give it a few days let the hype die down and then give it a go. I have it on preorder so no worry if I don't get to play the demo plus I saw the game in action at wizard world this weekend and it looks great!

I really enjoyed the demo, top notch looking game. If you have a nice Dolby Digital system it really brings out the atmosphere of Bioshock. In a dark room with a big screen tv you actually get a feeling of being underwater. All the bulkheads creaking, water dripping behind you and other great creepy noises really adds to the enjoyment of this title.

Not too much. From start to finish, the demo took me about 25 minutes to finish. Though, I didn't do as much exploring as I would have liked since I had to go to work.

Demo was fun, but I really hope the sound works better for stereo, non-surround setups in the final product. Other games I can still make out where sounds are coming from, but this was pretty hard to distinguish.

Definitely way spookier than I thought the game would be, but looking at the release lists I may need to grab this to hold me off until November since there isn't really alot else coming out (I don't care about the big H).

Yeah, the first one. I got out of there by simply backtracking through that small tunnel with the burning desk or whatever it was. I didn't get the enemy that comes when you get close enough to a door, though.

I like the concept of the game, but I'm not liking its execution. I hate how you have to activate the other hand before you can use it. Sometimes it activates and uses at the same time, and other times it doesn't. I just know that I've wasted ammo and energy by pulling the trigger twice when I should've just pulled it once. I also don't like the Doom-style never have enough ammo mechanics. I wanted to play a shooter! I swear, I didn't shoot any more than three dozen times! It was more effective to Gordon them to death, too.

For those that have played it: Have there been any moments that make you feel like you've spoiled a key part in the game? Not so much the "damn, that's amazing" moments, but stuff you imagine would be lessened in the retail version since you've already seen it in the demo.

I'm wondering whether to keep my BioShock content block out going and wait for next week for the game to get in.

I had issues downloading on low power as well...have you tried downloading while keeping the X360 on for a while? I know everyone has different experiences but mine downloaded in less than an hour when I left it on, when it was on power save mode it just got stuck at 10%.

BTW: This demo is worth killing your X360, if you can't play this game then why have an X360...yeah its that good!

I started the DL at 6:30 PST and it was finished by 6:40. I then spent an hour savoring every moment and detail (fantastic voice acting, graphics, good choice of song "La Mer" by Django Reinhart and Stephen Grapelli, Art Deco architecture, Individualist philosophy, Ayn Rand references (the man behind Rapture is named Andrew Ryan--anagram for Ayn Rand sort of)) All in all, this one hour was the best demo I've played since Ico back in 2001. I'm so happy I preordered the LE.

The game's not at all shabby, having completed the demo. A worthy successor to System Shock 2, and that should count as the highest praise.

Not so sure about the "THIS... IS... ART!" histrionics though.

Wow, just wow. I finished the demo 5 minutes ago and good lord was it mind blowing. I'm reminded of the first time I played Half Life 2 which is/was one of my favorite FPS' of all time.

Everything was clicking for me here. The atmosphere is incredible, the graphics are just about the best I've ever seen, the backstory seems very intriguing. This week cannot possibly go fast enough.

If I have one complaint it's that I spent too much time fighting things. There were times when I wanted to stop and look around more but I really couldn't because either something would be blowing up or crazy people would be coming after me.

The madness that seems to have taken hold of the residents of Rapture is especially disturbing yet understandable.

I have not been this blown away by a demo for as long as I can remember. My slight regrets about shelling out for the LE at Gamestop have evaporated.

I find it only fitting that Andrew Ryan's paradise is nothing more than a (Spoilers for those who haven't played the demo, but even then... these aren't game breaking.) wasteland haven for craven scavengers headed by a paranoid, delusional, egotistical fuck who, three decades after founding Rapture, still believes the CIA and KGB are out to get him.

I kinda like the saturated dystopic stuff. The powers you get (I already forget what they are called) are clearly inspired by the Radium craze-- people thought it was a miracle cure for everything, then they all got cancer and went crazy from it. That's one of my favorite "crazy" times in history :) I think I can guess one way the story could go:
if you get too many of those powers, you become a...skinner, is it? I forget the enemies' names too

If you don't even know the name of what you're criticizing, I'm not sure how valid your opinion is. The fact that you chose such a bizarre adjective reinforces that. Of all the valid criticisms of Objectivism there are, you hopped right over them and could only pull out a meaningless emotion-trigger word?

But mostly I enjoy that you fell into the simplistic trap of believing that this game reinforces your own ideology, or really any ideology at all. This quote from Ken Levine (creative director) sums it up:

"I was on the forums; I think it was Slashdot or something that someone pointed me toward. There was one guy saying, "this asshole! This communist asshole! He's taking down objectivism!" There was another saying, "I don't want to play a game that's some sort of Republican screed about free-market bullshit!" I really love the fact that two people can look at the game and take away two totally different opinions on it. The game is not about answering questions and coming up with solutions; it's about asking questions. When you start the game and ride down the bathysphere and you see Ryan's short film asking, "is man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?" that's a hard question to say no to. And, I dig it. But then there's Rapture, and I like that sort of opaqueness in storytelling, because I don't think there are black and whites."

If you're seeing answers in this story, it's because they're the answers you want to see. There are only questions being posed.

j/k, RS. This cat's got his trousers cinched too tight. Nobody ever said Randians () have senses of humor.

IMO, the entire Ryan soliloquy during the bathysphere ride down is a rail against socialist ideology. What does "is man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?" refer to, if not objectivism? Socialism redistributes said sweat; religion demands a portion of it. What in the world conclusion *could* you come to other than viewing Rapture as an Objectivist dystopia?

Moreover, the game overtly states that Ryan's ideological enemies are the CIA, KGB, and religion. It's pretty clear what the gamemakers are referring to. Ryan did not model Rapture after Marx and Engels' philosophies.

Ryan is evidently part Orson Welles, and part Howard Hughes. Me likey.

Ever since I tried playing RE2 by myself when I was like 10...man. Not only was I scared shitless at that age, I also didn't have a memory card yet because my brother and I JUST got the PSX. So I had a complete fear of death because I couldn't save!

Seriously it's because of that game that I have a more-than-normal fear of zombies. Like no really. That game fucked with me lol. I can't touch any of the RE games. Other zombie games I can handle, but survival horror games with zombies are definitely not happening for me.

Whenever I walk around my house at night and the blinds or door drapes aren't closed, I just imagine a zombie running up and banging up on the glass. I'm weird I know.

I feel alone in the, "Not really feeling this game" group.

I thought the demo was alright. I was never to fond of this game and the demo was actually a little worse then I expected. I was actually looking forward to the demo ending... *sorry*

The game to me, is hard to describe... it reminds me of the old resident evil games where they would have prerendered backgrounds and sort of out of place/ugly enemies/everything that was usable.

The enemies moved awkwardly and felt out of place... and the combat was really boring. And I hate shooting at things with a health bar. And nothing felt like it had wait to it.

The graphics and atmosphere (When there were no enemies around) were awesome. When ever there are enemies around though, it turns unappealing to me. . . I would prefer this game to just be a walk through this underwater city solving puzzles and crap.

The start of the game up till the point where you meet the first enemy was awesome. Kind of lost interest after that. I basically enjoyed the non fighting portions is what I am saying.

Uh, dude? I don't look for answers OR questions in video games (If you take life lessons from video games, you have more problems than I do.). Please, come off the intellectual masturbation about how you are the lone enlightened who doesn't see things in black or white. You clearly take this WAY more seriously than I do.

EDIT: Frankly, I kinda wish the Bioshock creators would get over themselves as well. Video games are, if history is any indication, a uniformly crappy medium for philosophical treatises. If they really succeeded at it, they don't need to keep buttering us up with so much prose that reeks more of self-reassurance than actual boasting. The product will speak for itself. If all you're doing is "asking questions," you're already taking a wishy-washy stance, so I'm not particularly interested in what you have to say beyond letting me judge precisely how well you asked said questions.

And, "Is man not entitled to the sweat of his own brow?" doesn't lead directly to gibbering zombies and lots of explosions. So the narrative arc we have is nothing but fragments, so I don't see how anyone can judge greatness or vapidity at this point.

However, given the evidence stated above, I'm leaning towards vapidity. I imagine the game will be a blast, but vapid.

imo, this demo is thicker with story, life, and intrigue than every game I've played this year combined, so I'm leaning towards it being compelling story-wise. that's not saying much, but it's worth noting.

I don't expect greatness, I just expect to be basely motivated to see what happens next. games and stories are two separate entities that may or may not ever blend, but the atmosphere in Bioshock is enough to make me think about what I'm seeing in the game, which is more than I can say for most games. still, that barely scratches the surface of what 1 minute of a good movie can do, story-wise. The demo sets up the skeletal structure of the story and as usual, it probably won't get much deeper than that. We're lucky to even see the basic conflicts illustrated in real time, rather than explained in some off-the-cuff prologue written by the programmer's cousin...still, I'm genuinely interested in hearing the story, even if it would sound like the most retarded thing ever if I explained it to a non gamer. ("A dystopia with a post-WW2 theme...but 18 fathoms under the sea! big Daddys! Little Sisters! Splicers! Super powers injected in to your arm!")

my downloads went by pretty fast i think. downloaded stranglehold and queued bioshock in the afternoon, went on my pc for a few hours and went back it was done.

i really never planned on buying bioshock at least not for full price. i have been keeping up here and there with trailers and whatnot, but playing the demo got me really excited for this game. i think the polish put into this game shows and although i still don't think i'm buying it day one, if that ad pic turns out to be true i will pick it up for 40.

The water part in the beginning fooled me, I thought I was watching more cutscenes, lol. I just was waiting there and then I saw the analog stick icon pop up to tell me to move. The graphics are really good.

The demo was awesome. Definitely a day 1 purchase for me. Everything about it was just perfect. In that one hallway with all the water, I pretty much just stared at the water for a few minutes. It looks stunning.

I never really got scared -- maybe I'm just weird. Games such as this, Doom 3, and Resident Evil haven't scared me -- but Like Likes from the N64 Zeldas scared the crap out of me(and I still have no idea why).

Well of course there's a drawing story. These people are claiming heirdom to System Shock 2!

I'm not yet pulled in by it though, but I imagine we'll have a good plot.

Speculation that could be big spoilers based off of info in the demo and only in the demo and a BIT taken tangentially from System Shock 2: Given that Ryan, with a half dozen monitors at his disposal in the final room of the demo, chooses instead to appear as a still image with an old-fashioned projector, he either has an unmatched flair for the dramatic, or Ryan is not who, or even what, he seems to be. CLEARLY HE IS SHODAN REBORN.

Speaking of SHODAN, is anyone REALLY falling for Atlas's claims that his 'family' is trapped in the Neptune area? Seriously. Who the heck is he trying to kid?

Not bad, glad I got to play a demo because the hype and previews I saw did nothing for me. Nice atmosphere, but I'm still not convinced that the hype about how this game "redefines the FPS" is anywhere near accurate.

I'll hold off on a purchase since I won't touch it once Halo comes out, but I'll get it down the road after a price drop.

I didnt find the demo scary, but then again I beat FEAR and played some Condemned and was ok with those(not to mention RE).

I think people are scared to play the game because they dont want to be scared. Once you actually play it then I think you realize it is much more thrilling/exciting because it keeps you on your toes while playing.

I think thats one of the reasons i missed out on the Silent Hill series when i was younger, but im glad that changed since i would be missing out on big quality titles now.

The music is mostly late 50s stuff, appropriate with the timeframe of the game. It's some oldies music, but some is really older than oldies stations play right now, so I don't know. It's kind of inbetween being oldies (60s/70s) and like "big band" type stuff.

You're about 3-4 decades too late for the music; I'd say it *is* Big Band. It's hard to find webstreams of low-fi Big Band/swing music (from the 20's-30's). Plenty of jazz (which was considered the Big Band equivalent of "punk rock" when the Big Bands were in full swing) on iTunes radio and the like.

My grandparents used to listen to this when I was younger, and even then (early to mid 80's) it was only found WAYYY up on the AM dial, near the church shows and tinfoil hat conspiracy theorists.

The music in this game, like the art style, is closer to the 20's-30's than it is the time frame (60's) it takes place in.

EDIT: On second thought, a lot of early jazz works, too, so you're right about that. There's some old Bessie Smith and Billy Holiday tracks that would be positively haunting in this game.

Yeah, this demo really sold me. They just nailed everything: atmosphere, music, gameplay, story, etc. I really wasn't expecting to like this game from watching just brief snippets on IGN, but like Velvet said, it sucked 30 minutes away from me without even thinking - and I didn't even finish the demo.

It was far and away a better experience than the Stranglehold demo, which felt WAY too much like Max Payne with bullet sound effects that sound like cap guns going off. Bioshock might be a nice diversion for me until Sept. 25.

I was finally able to DL this last night in under two hours and on my fifth try!! Anyway, I haven't seen this posted yet, but if you're interested in giving Hard Mode a try in the demo here ya go:

So, you've downloaded the BioShock demo. You've plumbed its glorious depths, defeated its grisly baddies, and you thought to yourself, "Self," you thought, "that was easy." Well fear not, avid BioShock fans, for we have one more way to stay your undying hunger for underwater dystopia. The fine fellows at DCEmu have uncovered how to play the BioShock demo in hard mode. When you start the BioShock demo, you'll notice that the hard mode option is there, but cannot be selected. The workaround for this is actually very simple. Before you start up the demo, open up your gamer profile and edit the default game settings. Under "general," simply set your default difficulty to hard. Now start up the BioShock demo and, voilà, hard difficulty will be highlighted. Just don't move it or you won't be able to reselect it without restarting the demo.

Enjoy.

My mind boggles that people felt the demo was lacking. I'm not attacking anyone but what more do you want out of a free demo?!

The controls were spot on, you got a taste of creative slaying and it lasted, initially for me at least, over half an hour. To top things off, after finishing it there's an incredible video preview of parts of the rest of the game. Sure it leaves you wanting more, that's the point of a demo. Now in a week we can all go pay 60-70 bucks for "more".

Wait ... what hand-to-hand? You must have meant the melee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_M%C3%AAl%C3%A9e_weapons). Overall I was a little disappointed by the demo, I've only played it through once so far and I'll give it another try but some things are bothering me about it. The reflections are bugging the hell out of me, the water looks great at first then I notice the moon isn't reflected on the water and there's white highlights everywhere. Then I get inside and I notice there's reflections on the walls of lights that don't even exist in the game. So I try to look past all this only to find my character acts like 5 yr old with adhd ... ooohh shiny plasmid must stick in arm ... arggghhh. I mean seriously the guy just narrowly escapes death in a plane crash that's right next to a lighthouse that transports him down to the depths of dna hell only to immediately act like a plasmid junkie. I really hope it's just the demo's fault that this story/game seems a lil rushed.

edit: ok I played it a second time and the moon is reflected in the water but not if you're standing on the stairs, go around to the back of the "lighthouse" and slowly walk to the water and it'll pop up when you're at the bottom of the stairs.

I can see where you would question this game and think it was rushed. The atmosphere had alot of detail and the gameplay was pretty solid, but just knowing that there was no reflection of the moon makes me want to remove the demo from my 360. Also considering the game comes out in 2 weeks I'm sure they'll be fixing the story/game flaws before it goes to production  .

You're so right. Its not like the guy would totally do anything to help kill, from what he can gather, is some genetic freak.

The character weighted his options: Try and kill these mutated freaks with a wrench. Given what he's seen so far, is a little difficult. Or even the odds in his favor with some extra firepower (pun intended).

I'm planning on picking up Eternal Sonata, maybe Mass Effect, maybe Stranglehold, maybe COD4, maybe Army of Two. My head hurts.

Wait ... what hand-to-hand?

First, why in the hell would you worry about seeing where the reflections are coming from? You're just looking for reasons to not like this game, which is fine if that's what makes you happy. I just hope you don't do it with every game or you'll never be satisfied.

As far as the whole, crazy, "ooh, drugs!" bit, until we see how that part plays out in the complete game, I'm reserving judgement. Yes, it seems hasty in the demo. At the same time, it's been said many times before that the demo is not necessarily exactly the same as the initial parts of the game. It's intended to be a teaser, not to plumb the depths of what the main character is going through emotionally and physically.

Sorta like how they gave you Bahamut summon materia in FF7 demo. Imagine if you would have judged FF7's quality and difficulty based on THAT demo lol.

As INSANELY tempting as that is, I'm waiting for GS to sell it so I can pick up my CE.

And yeah, there's a ton of games coming out that I plan on picking up. Bioshock, Two Worlds (pending reviews), Stranglehold CE (already paid off), Blue Dragon (again, pending reviews), Rock Band, Halo 3, Half-Life 2 Orange Box (this is a must), Guitar Hero 3, Army of Two.. man

The local Wichita store didn't have it (or the clerk was clued into the street date) he said it wouldn't be available till the 21st.

I have the CE pre-ordered as well, but if TrU would have had I would have snatched it up. I really want to play this game.

What's one hour and 40 minutes? Nothing.

I'd do it to get the game a week early.

Considering that theres also the Madden deal where you buy Madden and get a second game for 50% off, I think it's worth it.

Don't forget to combine this with the TRU Madden deal, as it appears the TRUs are breaking the street date.

Meh. Graphics were great (spent 15 minutes at the beginning after getting out of the water), but the game didn't seem that great.

Well I have access to my dads honda civic hybrid and that thing gets a ton of MPG. Anyways someone in the deal thread mentioned that 99% of the east coasts TRUs will have Bioshock as it comes into stock and that they will be selling it as it has no street date. I'm gonna call the st. pete TRU tommorow again and make sure they're not BS-ing.

newbs @ the gamestop i preordered the bioshock. i asked if they are going to have it tuesday at opening time, and the clerk asked his co worker and he said it ships in 10 days.

so can anyone answer my question? Is GS going to have these at opening or when UPS ships it? thanks.

They'll have it when they open. Stores are getting the game tomorrow. It shipped out today. It's street dated until the 21st.

They'll likely get it either late the day it comes out or the next day. Depends on how close they are to the shipping facility. But from my past experiences with EB/GS, you can get it late in the evening the day it was released or sometime the next day. However, for something as big as say Halo 3, its like a 99.9% chance that they will have it at midnight.

Atmosphere is a 10/10 for me. Don't know if the rest of the game holds up though. Seems like a mix between Doom3 and Oblivion.

I have to agree. The game is very linear. Walk here because you can't walk anywhere else, search dead body because there is nothing else to do, kill person, tap b for health.

See my above post. Stores either already have it, or they're getting it in tomorrow's shipment.

Just played through the demo again, and I must say, they're not kidding when they say you can't play the same way twice. The flow of enemies was much different this time around. There were places where I waited to get attacked and nothing happened. Then there were places where I didn't expect to get attacked and I did. So awesome. I'm going to reserve my LE tomorrow.

I doubt they can guarentee it this late. It's under a week now, their order numbers have already been sent off.
