I have to agree. The game is very linear. Walk here because you can't walk anywhere else, search dead body because there is nothing else to do, kill person, tap b for health.
I really think that's more an indication of what they put into the demo/the very beginning of the game versus what the final product is. I mean, this thing got insane reviews. If is was just another Doom 3 (beautiful graphics, same old shooting), it wouldn't be nearly as universally praised.
I'm so going to bug TRU everyday this week. I'd love to have some quality time with the game before school starts.
I wonder if any GS' will break street date. Seems like they could if word gets out that tons of people are going to buy it from TRU.

Meh. Graphics were great (spent 15 minutes at the beginning after getting out of the water), but the game didn't seem that great.
Agreed.

I doubt they can guarentee it this late. It's under a week now, their order numbers have already been sent off.
Well, I'll give it a shot anyway. I might as well try to reserve it now rather than hope they have extras on launch day.
I'm not that worried though. I don't really live in a place with a lot of gamers. Stuff is usually really easy to find around here.

I live in an area surrounded not only by gamers, but game studios. I've walked into a store where a bunch of guys are filing out wearing gaming shirts. I ask for a game at the counter and they tell me the guys from studio so and so just picked up all the copies.

I've had it stutter on me quite a bit (voice warping, pauses, audio glitches), I'd be pissed if this thing dies while I'm trying to get through Rapture. Oh well, I already set aside emergency funds for a new 360 if such were to happen.
The official forums and neogaf are retarded about the street date break, MODs are locking threads left and right....
Hell SciFi is running a commercial that even says: "Availible Now!". It'd be an awesome day for me as a gamer to have both Persona 3 and Bioshock arrive at the same time.

Just went through the demo for the first time...
I remember why I don't like games like this.....they scare the shit out of me.
I can handle "scary" movies because they're only scary for moments at a time. But videogames? Man, you're fucking in it the entire time.
I was pretty impressed by the game. I like how you can rummage through the world and pick up stuff. Will I pick it up? Probably not because I'm a vagina, but I did enjoy the demo. I may give the demo a second run-through because now I know what to expect.
I'm just glad I wasn't playing with my 5.1 speakers. Man. I'd probably lose my mind if I actually played the full game.

Ditto on it being scary, I just played it on my projector (92" screen) w/ 5.1 surround. But I'll still end up buying it and probably not even finishing it or playing it during the day. Same thing happened with Prey and Condemend.

Same here, I downloaded the demo for the hell of it and haven't even played it once. I'm a fan of comedic violence and junk like Dead Rising, but creepy games aren't my cup of tea.
Hell, I'm inching my way through RE4 for the Wii and the fucking Novistadors scared the shit out of me when I first encountered them, they don't look scary, just that I turn around and find acidic vomit being spewed on me made me jump.

Oh man. FEAR. That game...ahh get it away from me lol. Creepy little children are the worst thing to ever happen to the horror genre. Fucking just...get them away.
I really do love horror movies, and most of the time I don't even think a lot of the movies that people consider really scary are that scary at all. Such as 28 Days Later, or The Descent. I will say that The Descent had me going a few times, but overall I was like "yeah it was ok scary." Games like RE or Bioshock are seriously 100x scarier than any horror film to me.
I'm still very much on the fence for this game. I've been thinking about getting RE for the Wii as well, I'm trying to overcome my fear of frightening videogames.

Played the demo. I was really looking forward to this game, but I wasn't all that impressed with the demo. I think that when you get a game like this, and the hype surrounding it is off the charts, that a lot of people, who have put a lot of hope into the game, say they were more impressed with it than they really were. It's like when you buy your first car, and you're all hyped about it, and then you find out it's a lemon, but because you loved being hyped about it, you try to up-play the good things about it and downplay the bad.
That being said, the graphics and atmosphere were great, but I found the game to be a little disorienting, and I don't feel as though the demo gave much of a story to follow. I was a little confused as to the whole beginning, but that could just be because it's a demo. Who knows.
I also found the controls to be a tad floaty. Not too bad, but it made it kind of hard to aim, especially with how fast the enemies moved on screen. Also, the enemies all look pretty much the same. I'm one of those sick freaks who inspects bodies after they kill them, and I noticed that in the demo, they all pretty much looked the same. Bleah.
Will I get this game? I'm on the fence. I'm not sure it's worth $60. I'll probably wait until it hits around $40 to $50, but we'll see.
On a final note, as I played through the demo, I kept thinking of a phrase a game publisher once said when Bioshock was first being shipped around. He said Bioshock was "'just another ****ing PC FPS that's going to sell 250,000 units." I agree with half of that statement.

Well as for the story element...it's a demo. Though I did wish for some more background on why there were still people alive in Rapture. But I know it'll be in the final game.
I was never that hyped up for this game at all because the game never looked that appealing to me. But after playing the demo, I did enjoy myself. Plasmids were fun, so was rummaging through stuff and searching dead bodies.
I'll agree that the variants in enemies was kind of lacking, but in an FPS...I'm not that worried. Again, I'd probably expect more come release day.
Also, what do you mean by disorientating?
EDIT: Same here Appossum. During what time is this game supposed to take place? I know Rapture was created during the 40s or 50s....but what about the outside world?
I also can't over the hilarity of the cover. It's just like....BAM!

Yeah, the majority of TRU stores are seling it early, saying that there was never an official street date (even though there is). The commercial says "available now".
Apparently 2K wants to abolish the street date and make it sellable upon receivement, but no official word yet. I've also heard that Bioshock has been completely removed out of the EB/GS system to prevent early selling. This is one giant clusterfuck.

I'm dying to play this. I really want (and have largely paid off) the GS CE. At the same time, it's been 3 years since I bought a Madden game and the TRU deal would make the regular Bioshock very cheap (comparatively).
I should just turn off my interweb for the next week in order to avoid being teased like this.

There seem to be an inconsistency about that. Rapture was built in 1946, there doesn't seem to be any contradiction to that. But for the time period you're playing there does seem to be a conflict between the website and the demo. Your ship sinks in 1960, that's clear. I forget the month but it shows you that as well. That's reasonable because when you're in that bar in Rapture there's a fallen banner that reads "Happy New Year 1959" so it's been about a year and a half since Rapture collapsed. However, the website (http://www.2kgames.com/cultofrapture/rapture.html) says that "At one point Rapture's population numbered several thousand at its peak during the early 1960s". That clearly cannot be correct if the game is set in 1960. I'm assuming the website is in error here since the in game evidence is far greater than one date on a website. I would check the forums but I'm getting database errors trying to load the page.

Yep. I'm gonna head to TRU because I want to play the hell out of this game, not for a quick $100 that someone will instantly regret. I'm not very nice, but I'm not an asshole, either.Good luck with that. Hopefully you can find it there, and use the 20% off coupon as well. Save $12.

BS for the the TRU's in the northgate mall, the one in Bellevue ,and the one southcenter in WA state :(

No luck at the TRU on Daniel Webster Highway in Nashua. The clerk was an asshole about it too. When I asked him he sighed and agrily said "NO, we DON'T have Bioshock, people have been asking all day and it's getting REALLY annoying". I would've unleashed on him for being such a dick, but there was a big line of little kids behind me, so I thought it would be best not to.
So I went to Gamestop and reserved the LE; the guy guaranteed me a copy on launch day.

Sometimes you gotta cut the employee a break. Think about it. That guy's probably been asked hundreds of times today. But the part where he said "it's getting really annoying" is a bit excessive.

Wow. Some people truly have some impulse control issues.
$109.99 for a game that will be out in less than a week? It's not like the damned thing is going to be released in limited quantities, like the LE. Sheesh.
$109.99? I see some $140 and $150 sales there - for the regular version! Those people deserve to get fleeced... morons...

First, why in the hell would you worry about seeing where the reflections are coming from? You're just looking for reasons to not like this game, which is fine if that's what makes you happy. I just hope you don't do it with every game or you'll never be satisfied.
As far as the whole, crazy, "ooh, drugs!" bit, until we see how that part plays out in the complete game, I'm reserving judgement. Yes, it seems hasty in the demo. At the same time, it's been said many times before that the demo is not necessarily exactly the same as the initial parts of the game. It's intended to be a teaser, not to plumb the depths of what the main character is going through emotionally and physically.
Um ok why would I worry? Well when a graphical "standard" has been set by let's say a game like Doom 3 (on xbox no less) you'd expect that games released after it and on a more powerful system would do certain things as good if not better. There's three (graphical) things that really matter in a game and that's lighting, shadows, and reflections if any one of those are off it can make a great game look like crap but if your eyes can't tell the difference you'll be happy playing with crap but I sure won't.
Looking for reasons not to like a game? That's just plain insanity. I constantly look for reasons to like games it's not my fault they can't take the time to polish the crap. I can see right past perfection and enjoy myself, but one flaw, one reflection that doesn't make sense catches my eye and annoys the fuck out of me. But anyway, in actuality I preordered the game from liongames.com so you're wrong I want to LOVE this game, as I don't drop $45 on many games at all.
I agree with you that this is a demo and it's a teaser and it's intended to wet my flibbin whistle, BUT it sure seems like the beginning of the game. I hope I'm wrong but like I said before "I really hope it's just the demo's fault that this story/game seems a lil rushed."

I haven't had a chance to play the demo yet, so can someone answer one question?
Is it creepy, or is it scary?
I love creepy games, such as Resident Evil 4, where the atmosphere is just imposing, the creatures warped, and so on, and you're sort of uncomfortable the whole time.
I hate scary games, like Doom 3, where shit just jumps out at you. They're boring because the atmosphere really holds no value.

I remember sometime last year watching a video of an early preview of bioshock with one of the creators (think it was Ken Levine) and he was explaining how, unlike most FPS's their goal was not to create the next jaw-dropping grapical engine to compete with the rest, as that would take up too much dev time. Instead, they focused on AI and environmental interaction type stuff.
This said, you can nitpick the hell out of the graphical effects not being up to par with the big boys all you want. But I would contend that the shock games have never been about the best graphics. They have been about gameplay. Just because it's an FPS, don't be confused into thinking otherwise. The gaming populace has been brainwashed the past few years into thinking each FPS game that comes out should offer some new level of graphic wow. And that's lame.
Personally, I feel that even though the engine may not stand up to other games released this year, it's art design is among the best, if not the best. And I would rather have awesome art design with a mediocre engine than the best graphical engine and bland art design.

I agree with you but the Doom 3 engine could do everything I was talking about and this is using the Unreal Engine 3.0 which I would imagine is much more adavanced. It just seems to me that simple things like say lights in the kitchen might be something you'd add to a level. They took the time to light the area and even had one of the lights flicker but there's no light fixtures anywhere. It doesn't take a degree to know how stupid lit areas look when there's no light "sources".

And the firefight isn't as large either. Also, there are no bots to hack or anything until the beginning of the second level. The demo does end exactly when the first level of the game ends though.

I'm not too concerned with MP or length because I pretty much only play Halo online, and games that are over 20 hours I never seem to finish. But I do think these are relevant points and I truly do hope reviewers address this.

Bioshock might have a better single player than any of the three Halo games (that remains to be seen), but the allure of the Halo series has always been it's multi-player, not really the story or single player.

I can't understand how not having multiplayer is a bad thing in a game where the focus is on immersing you in an experience that would only work in a single player game. Hopefully no reviewers are taking away points for something so trivial.

QFT. Game length is the last thing on my list that I care about. Plus, you can have too much of a good thing where games that are amazing are still too long. *coughokamicough* 12-15 hours is the sweet spot to me as long as there's no filler.

If you liked Condemned: You will like this game. If you liked Dues Ex: You will like this game. I have played for two days now and I dont know how many hours in but I am engrossed. The story is so strange and twisted that you want to find out what is going on. Figuring out how to fight Big Daddies and Splicers with your different plasmids is also tons of fun because they are so diverse and throw so many different things at you...Know they throw the camera at me so we will see where this goes.
This game is definitely one of those games that you have to play. Whether you rent or buy. It is in the same echilon or slightly below Half Life 2, Halo, Zelda and Mario

I'm far more interested to see how "on" the Wii FPS controls are in Prime than in playing anything dual-analog for right now. That, and I've never played a Prime before, so it's a first for me :)
Not like Bioshock is going to suddenly disappear early next year when I'm likely to pick it up and play it.
you're batshit insane if you choose Metroid Prime 3 over Bioshock
Color me batshit insane, too, then ;). MP3 is a must buy, Bioshock is a must look at some time in the distant future for me. Which is saying something as I haven't played ANY of the games you all compare this too - just not my type of thing. Though if the great reviews keep pouring in, I *may* rent it some time in the next month just to give it a shot.

I think Bioshock is going to end up as the best reviewed 360 game of all time, if this keeps up. 5 points higher than the next two games on Metacritic.com, GoW & Oblivion.
And on Gamerankings its almost 2% higher than the highest ranked game of all time, Zelda OOT. Granted, there's still quite a few reviews to come in but quite a few have already been posted as well...
Usually I try not to get too excited about games because I get let down but I don't even think its possible with this game at this point.

Actually, I have Blue Dragon preordered as well and the original plan was going to be for me to play it over Bioshock as it is more my style of game. However, that was back when it was hyped up and Bioshock looked like any number of other games. Now the roles have flipped and Blue Dragon is looking like just a barely above average JRPG, so I will probably wait on that. I'll just stick to Metroid for now ;). And to whoever it was that said we've "played this to death", I haven't - I played Prime almost all the way through 2 or 3 years ago and barely touched Echoes. So MP3 will be pretty fresh for me.

In my opinion, GoW was crap as in the style, not the execution. It obviously was technically fairly complex, but it's a shame that it's dark, gritty, colorless design didn't allow you to appreciate it.

I also just watched a video on youtube of The first chance you get to either harvest or save a Little Sister. Wow. Like. Watching the Little Sister try to run away and cower in fear from you...IDK if I could ever harvest her, despite how ugly she may look, she still is too much like a little girl, it's a little unnerving for me. On the flip side, when you do harvest her, she turns into a slug thing. Weird.

Gotcha - I can understand that. It's just that for me (and I'm sure there are others) this genre of game is not for us. It irks me a bit when people claim it is a "must buy if you love any kind of games" thing. That just isn't true. Hell, the hype on this has gotten me at least to consider it, which is fairly remarkable in and of itself ;). Like I said, if it continues, I will definitely give this a rental (when it becomes available - will probably be pretty hard to find at my local Blockbuster or Hollywood for a while).
I'm just worried that if, as someone in this thread claimed, the Big Daddies are extremely hard to fight, then I'll be totally outclassed. I don't usually play any first person games (Metroid is the exception) so I'll be pretty clueless about how to play, particularly in tougher parts (though I managed part of the demo just fine).

But that's always the double edged sword of good graphics. Splinter Cell has awesome graphics but the game isn't set in a variety of environments. That's just what the game is. You can't be pissed off going into a game that was advertised as dark and gritty. I'm not going into Bioshock wondering where the hell the sun is.

The Metroid Prime series is actually the one series that usually doesn't hold up well in pricing. MP went almost directly to the clearance bin, Metroid Prime 2 dropped from $49.99 to $14.99 in 6 months.
But enjoy it, it'll be decent. I hope. I'm looking forward to it, but not on launch day. I'll give it a rent or two

That sucks, but it's your money/gameplaying time. Not saying I agree with it, but I see no reason not to get the game right away if its not going to see a price drop for a long time. Actually, waiting and then buying it at full price a ways down the line would be doing far more to "support" their pricing strategy than buying it upfront. But, I'm not actively supporting anything corporately with my purchase. Prime 3 has a lot more that interests me than Bioshock does at the moment (e.g., is the FPS a viable genre for the Wii?).
You guys enjoy now. I'll be around to catch up soon. :)
The flip side of the argument (in favor of buying Metroid at release) is that half (well, OK, maybe 1/4) of CAG runs around putting down the Wii with the it's two Gamecubes duct taped together with added waggle meme (though that seems to have died a bit recently). So I say it is entirely necessary to support "hardcore" games on the Wii (something that isn't a mini-game compilation at any rate). So there ;). These types of games will always come out for the 360, no problem.
Edit: Responding to Daroga below so as not to make yet another post - I actually composed this message at the same time as your last one - we're talking in parallel and not really addressing each other
Anyway, I've made my point and am done as well - continue on with the regularly scheduled Bioshock hype!
And to get you back on track, here's the metacritic page for it:
http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/bioshock
98/100 average on 11 reviews - that really is phenomenal!
Blue Dragon is getting a respectable 82, which surprises me given the amount CAGs seem to hate it.

Since someone mentioned originality before, I will say this:
I was playing it earlier tonight, and my wife (who plays enough games with me to know what she's doing) walked past the TV, and after glancing at it, asked me what part of Oblivion this was.
I called her a dumb broad and sent her back to the kitchen (not true), but afterward it sort of struck me how it could totally appear that way. First person, melee weapon in right hand, magic in the left. Look fast enough and you really can't tell the difference between a splicer and an imp. Here you hack, there you lockpick. Even the HUD. They call it Eva, but it's really just a art-deco mana bar.
I do think the game is very original, but its funny that there will always be some sort of gaming conventions that will never change.

going back to the comparison to metroid prime, while MP was fun, looked, and sounded great, it was really lacking in the story department. because of that, in retrospect it's not that memorable of a game at all, the music is probably the best thing in it for me. the series needs to evolve with the competition actually having compelling stories.
after playing the bioshock demo i already know it has more story than MP.

That's probably true (although I personally loved the original MP's story) but the playabilty is there. I think I'm gonna still get Bioshock first and MP3 later, and that's mostly because Bioshock had a demo (something I really wish MP3 had) that impressed me (didn't really care for it before).

looking at some videos for MP3, it looks like they're bringing new characters and fleshing out the universe. i say it's about time because they've had this cool female protagonist and all we know is her name and what she looks like. for all we know she could be a real bitch :)
You would actually not play a game for fear of it being too difficult?
I didn't say I wouldn't play it, but it does concern me in terms of getting it as a rental if I end up getting stuck somewhere. I don't play all these FPS games 24 hours a day like you guys, after all . If difficult = frustrating and having to play the same level 40 times, then I wouldn't like that (reference what Wombat said about Scobie and GoW in the latest CAGcast). Not that I mind retrying in genres I enjoy - this one, I'd probably get bored with retrying again and again (IF that's the case). Though I did notice it had an easy mode (I did normal on the demo).

I think I read some where that even if you die your enemies don't heal. So for example if you are fighting a big daddy and get 1/3 of its health down and die when you respawn you will be fighting a big daddy with 2/3 of it's health left. Eventually you will beat him.
I am also worried about my general suckiness at FPS games (I kept getting killed at the end of the demo on medium) but I'm not going ot let that stop me from enjoying what could be the best game of the year. I'm actually looking forward to the audio experience the most - the demo creeped me out - especially the little sister!

I have a bit of a problem. I actually managed to get my wife interested in this game and its storyline. She was pretty impressed with the art direction and the opening. the only thing is, she HATES needles, and there is no way she can keep watching me play this thing if the main character is going to jam (and I mean jam!) a needle into his wrist every 20 seconds! Why on earth did they have to put that animation in there? I have no problem with needles, but even I don't really feel like watching that all the time.
Otherwise, amazing game.. I can't wait for the retail version. Anyone out there agree with me on the other stuff?

Back on OT. Since GS changed their ratings to only whole numbers and .5s, I predict a 9.0 and the internet will catch on fire from the "outrage". In reality, it probably would've been a 9.3. A slim chance for a 9.5, with no chance for a 10/10.

This may not be new info but GAMESTOP BROKE RELEASE DATE! I went yesterday to preorder my LE copy and the guy told me that they changed the release date and it is today! So everybody you should be able to go into gamestop and get your copy right now. Also he let me hold and look at the LE box and it was awesome. The Big Daddy figurine is way nicer then I thought it was gonna be. I should be going in in about an hour to pick up my copy.

darthbudge IDK if you know....I would hope you do...TRU broke release date on Tuesday and almost shut down the internet. They've since corrected the problem. Also some GS's have been reported to break release, but for the most part, both chains stopped selling the game early.

I'm so hoping my 360 doesn't die at least until the end of the year. I get a little anxious every time I turn it on.

I think I read some where that even if you die your enemies don't heal. So for example if you are fighting a big daddy and get 1/3 of its health down and die when you respawn you will be fighting a big daddy with 2/3 of it's health left. Eventually you will beat him.
This is True. Im about 3.5 - 4 hrs into the game (and in love with it) and I was fighting a big daddy last night and just as i was about to kill him a random grunt killed me and i was pissed. Then when i made it back to the room The big Daddy and little Sistier were still there and i was suprised to find him with only a fraction of health. One Freezing plasmid blast :cold: and 5 armor piercing rounds from the old tommy gun did the trick. The i really like the way the respawn system works in this game. It dosent "punish" you for dieing but instead makes you rethink your approach of the area in which you died.

Yeah I know that TRU broke release date but I figured that GS wouldn't do it because they are a bit more reputable in their market. Also it may just be my GS because the manager is really cool and will often do things like this cause he understands what the gamers want.

don't stores get charged a couple thousand per copy that they sell before the street date?

I told my gf this morning I think Bioshock will end up with a 9.5 from Gamespot. If it gets a 10 it'll probably be game of the year. If it ends up with a 9.0 there will be massive outrages.

It has nothing to do with "understanding what gamers want" and has everything to do with not wanting to pay several hundreds of thousands of dollars per copy sold. You may have been told it's today, but I wouldn't celebrate until I had a copy in my own hand.
I just called my local GS. Tuesday.

I just came back from paying off my pre-orders of Stranglehold and Bioshock CE. I asked if I could have it today but no dice. I can get it first thing Tuesday morning. At least he told me that none of the Big Daddy figures came broken. Apparently they had to fill out some kind of report on how many units were broken and send it back to 2K.
Btw, I think Gamespot will give this game a 9.5

As much as I worry that this game will be too short, there isn't much coming out until November so I just preordered the regular edition at gamestop. This will clear out the rest of my credit so I don't have to go there much anymore. (My regular store used to rock but it's all new stereotypical gamestop people.)
The girl told me they are doing the Midnight thing so I can grab it early-ish I suppose. Either way I'll be sure to bring my 10% off coupon courtesy of cag.

Damn son. BioShock is getting amazing reviews all over. I was going to buy this game in December as I won't have time to game in September, but after seeing these scores, I MUST get the game ASAP. This will likely go down as the best game of the year.
With these reviews I'm glad I preordered the CE.
They're just reviews kiddies, remember that they aren't always right and they aren't always unbiased ... remember a little game called Halo 2 with graphics that glitchy and it still scored unbelievably high, it's only saving grace was the incredible multi-player.

Rental...? It's not my bag. I'll play co-op but honestly the multiplayer just doesn't do it for me. Since it scares every other publisher, nothing else on the horizon until a month later it seems :(

Yeah, this game is insanely long. I honestly don't give a fuck about Halo and Metroid anymore. Like I still will buy em, but I was anticipating them so much untill I played this game. The innovation, voicework, environments, interactives, oh my! It reminds me of Halo when it first came out. Sleeper hit that sells consoles.

Jeff Gerstmann, who I think will review BioShock at GameSpot, didn't seem overly impressed with it. I'm guessing an 8.5 from GameSpot, just because they hate things.

*sigh* They gave ONE game a JUST score, which I still think was too high for Zelda: The Ocarina of More of the Same.

This is true. I feel like before GS had the honor of being known as the website that had tough reviews. Whereas sites like IGN, which more than often overrates games. But ever since GS' TP review came out, the internet game community is just like "Oh holy shit! They gave TP what?!" and now, everyone seems to ignore GS if they're even just a couple points below the average score of whatever videogame.

I wonder to think that Twilight Princess would be the best reviewed game of all time hadn't GS stepped up and rated the game objectively.

GameSPot is hit and miss. Some games they review far too low, while others they review far too high. They gave Halo 2 a 9.6 or a 10.0 I think. That's wya too high, in my mind. Low 9s at the highest for a game with a forgettable single-player. But reviews are always subjective, so you can't read too much into them.

Yeah, I seriously would have rated the Wii version of Twilight Princess a 7 or 8 and would have seriously warned anyone interested that it's a brilliant but ridiculously awkward game.
