Glad I'm not the only who feels this way! As much as the demo was awesome, I'm really not sure I can handle playing through the whole game.

In a way, I'm glad my amazon order doesn't ship right away as I still have time to cancel it (though not much).

Game freaks me out bigtime. Theres a point where you are just walking along minding your own business and all the lights go out. wtf man...

Got the call to pick up my pre-order at EB.

I won't be out of my classes until around 3, but I'll probably devote the rest of the day to playing it.

Excitement.

Showed up at 12am at Walmart, had 1 employee look in the back for it, then had one manager look in the back, told me they don't got it and to check back tomorrow at 10am...god I hate Walmart.

Should have known better than to try Meijer. They never have shit in. They always order a handful copies for a midnight release and take damn near a week or more to get more in stock.

They did have about 11-12 Wiis. Which would counter my argument except for the fact it's the first time in about 5 or 6 months that I've seen a Wii at the local Meijer.

Oh man after seeing that if my Big Daddy Figurine is broken I get an art book I am kinda hoping mine is broken cause that art book looks sweet.

Also it sucks that GS opens at 10 because I am busy from 10 till 11 so I will have to pick it up then.

Honestly, I think this game is somewhat creepier than Condemned. This game pulls a creepy trick a few times where (non-plot) you get into a particularly large firefight with the spiders with this 1940's music blaring and lights going on and off and they're all screaming stuff and that part made me jump for sure.

Also, the entire theatre sequence where you have to hunt down people I'm in now is a lot more unnerving than anything in Condemned.

As much as I am enjoying this, there are so many little things wrong with the presentation. Subtitles are horribly out of sync, no way to stop recordings from playing once you start them, and the whole twitch/stutter bits are quite often.

I also feel like the control scheme was tacked on. It feels way too much like a PC shooter than a 360 shooter. I'm going to try bumping up the turn speed and see if that helps.

Wait until you start seeing the dead bodies with no textures on them. They just look like smooth brown manequins. I've seen it happen a few times, but it doesn't take away from the experience all that much.

My Big Daddy came in pristine condition. I'm starting to think the broken figurine catastrophe is overblown because they seem to be pretty solidly built. darth007, my cage is a little off-center as well. I wouldn't worry about it since it isn't like the Big Daddies are supposed to be perfect, they are abominations after all. ;)

I wonder if 2K will reject any broken figures that aren't factory sealed? That way they will know who did any tampering to get the free art book.

Coupled with incorrect widescreen settings? Hmm...

I haven't played the final version, but I feel like the lack of ability to pause a recording seems like it would get pretty damn annoying.

I was also surprised at how many people were saying how well the shooter controls worked. Again, I've only played the demo, but I remember trying to shoot splicers, but they sometimes move too quickly for you to even keep up. I pretty much solely play shooters so please don't comment on my aiming. This is a small issue that I got used to on the second time through the demo though.

Thanks for your feedback. ^_^ This wouldn't be such a big deal if they didn't offer the amazing art book too. The art book is what's motivating people to break them. They should just give the book away to those who register the game or something similar.

4:3 is so like 2 years ago.

The pictures on the 2k forum are pretty ridiculous. A LOT of screen is cut out. Also, either Joystiq or Kotaku took their own pictures of their screens with Bioshock.

Oh dear God, this game is so damn good it will make grown men weep. I've only had time to play the first hour but I can already tell that this is a true gem. Completely immersive and not as scary as I thought it would be (in fact, scary isn't even the right word). It has the "fun" of an RPG rather than a shooter like Gears.

To anyone who has played a fair amount of the game, should I be conserving the magic points or will I always have a constant supply because I have fun electrocuting everything in sight. It seems every enemy I kill keeps giving me magic points so it doesn't seem like it will ever run out.

No, there are plenty of ways to get eve (mana) that you find later in the game, so go crazy. Besides all the bottles scattered around, you find some abilites that grant you mana when you use a health pack, or even hit things with your wrench .

Honestly later in the game, I found bullets harder to come by, so ive been using my powers far more.

For anyone looking for deals - Frys is also doing the 49.99 launch (along with CC), no PMs necessary.

For anyone who was curious - the 10% coupon worked flawlessly and I got 7.60 back off my previously paid off pre-order. I distributed a bunch of copies to all the other ubernerds waiting in line with me, and there was much rejoicing (and eyes of fire from the lone cashier operator who now had to perform an extra transaction at the register). I pre-ordered Halo 3 to appease him, and after I pick that up I've officially washed my hands clean of Gamestop forever, barring any legitimate deals.

My Big Daddy drill trip broke off... hope this replacement plan is quick and painless as I won't be around for a month.

Unfortunately I won't be able to play this until Saturday, but it feels good to hold my copy in my hands.

Sometimes you just see them walking around. If there are any little sisters left in the level, they will walk toward a hole in the wall and one will pop out.

They do respawn too, so after you've cleared all the sisters in the level you can still find them and take them out. Quick way to make some $$$.

I just saved the first sister you can.

Is it worthwhile like Tenebaum says?

From what I've done... you get less Adam from them, but for every three you save, a little sister drops of a present with 200 Adam and some hard to find items. Also, there is an achievement for saving all of them, and I've read you get the "good ending' although I have no idea how many you have to save for that.

It's kind of disappointing to me that you can't go through any of the game's chapters with full-strength and just run around being fearless.

That's what I loved about Goldeneye. After beating the game and getting all the cheats, it was SO much fun to just fuck with the enemies.

That seriously would've been a big selling point for me.

I saw her with him, and I wasn't going to fight, but a rocket turret was near me so I went for it. Dunno what happened to her though, maybe she ran?

That's happened to me several times. She seems to flee once her protector is getting pretty beat up. I guess you can die all you like during the early stages of the fight but once he's down to like 25%, you need to finish the job without dying. Very tricky on hard.

I saved the Little Sisters the first time through. It's worth it.

Also, for the Little Sister Saver achievement, as long as you don't kill any (it doesn't matter how many you save) you get the achievement.

And yes, the Big Daddies get tougher.

I'd recommend the normal difficulty since the scarcity of ammo might make hard frustrating. It is true that you respawn but suppose you had 5 health packs before, now you only have 1 when you respawn. And suppose you unloaded all of your ammo and still haven't killed the Big Daddy, you have to resort to wacking him with a wrench which would take forever. It's kinda like imagine playing the last level of Doom with God mode but you only have a pistol. It wouldn't be hard but it gets tedious.

To anyone that has had substantial time in this game, is ammo going to be a problem for the entire game? I don't really need it since you can use the Force powers but I've been saving all of my ammo and finally decided to use my weapons in the medical facility and I am nearly depleted. I haven't even reached the boss yet. Not to mention that I could buy ammo with money, but money is scarce too...

I'm not too far, maybe a few loading screens past you, and ammo is always a pain. You find it all the time, but its like 3 bullets, 2 bullets, etc.

Also, your wallet can get full. That's right, there is a cap on how much cash you can hold. I hit it, then splurged, and now I am in the hole. I recommend saving quite a bit, especially before trying to take a big daddy, incase something dumb happens and you get stuck on a chair or something.

Mr Durand Pierre
08-22-2007, 01:38 AM
I'm about 4 hours in and just beat the second level. So far I'd say it's easily the best game I've played since Twilight Princess. The reason I'm not that far is I feel like I spent a quarter of the time playing just looking at the in-game posters and decorations. This is how videogame environments should be.

My only (very slight) criticism is that you need to go to those machines to rearrange your plasmids. I feel like that's something you should be able to switch around from the menu, but that's just me. I'm sure it will get less frustrating once I get more plasmid slots, but it was annoying in the second level where you get new abilities, but there's no places to switch out your plasmids, so I was without my nifty firepower for the rest of the level and had to go back upon starting level 3 to seek out the hidden goodies I missed.

Otherwise it's an amazing, amazing game. Can't wait to play it some more.

-This is one of those games that you wish you had a flashlight in it in.

Everything else is fantastic. I was reminded that my sound system could get REALLY loud with this game. You will feel every single step from a Big Daddy.

I'm at the "no turning back once you go forward" point, so it is definitely as short as people say it is. I am, however, missing a bunch of achievements, so that will probably add to things. A second play through will probably be fun, considering so much goes on that you forget half the things that have happened.

Story is really good though, albeit a bit predictable. I like the little Citizen Kane moments with Ryan on the TVs. Classic.

I'm listening to the LE Soundtrack right now. Track One sounds like an experiment gone terribly wrong, Track Two showed a little promise before the vocals dropped in and now it's only marginally better than the first, and Track 3 is passable at best if you can get past the repetition of the refrain...

I can't believe Moby is actually behind this "album" (if you can call it that). It sounds like these songs were slapped together in Garageband by a summer intern at a mixing studio.

I was actually looking forward to some period music, and instead we get this. Lame 2k, lame.

There used to be one in the prison area with a little sister, but I died at the same time as the Big Daddy and by the time I respawned I could no longer find the little sister and instead there was a new Big Daddy roaming around there, but with no little sister. Is there something I'm missing here, orwill I need to load an earlier save?

Just follow one around, he should head off to an area that has a hole in the wall. It's the one's that are bronze, the hole in the wall that is. He will start to knock on it with his hand, which is to call out one of the little sisters.

Sorry I kinda worded it weird, I don't know what those holes are called.

For anyone who finished the game, about how long was it?

It took me around 18-20 hours. I really took my time with the game though.

I tried that. I spent a good 40+ minutes stalking big daddies, but no little sisters ever came out of the holes. Upon further research I do believe this to be a glitch. Many have reported finding 4 little sisters in this level (where one was a respawned version of an already killed one). I think what happens is that a some point in this level there is a bug that causes the little sister(s) you've already killed to respawn and prevents others from showing up. It's just a thought as the 2 that I killed were both in the same location (at the beginning of the level) and the other two refuse to show up. I think I'm going to have to reload an earlier save:(

This makes me pretty angry as up 'til now I've considered the game to be a masterstroke, but having to replay the last hour or two to get past a glitch really leaves a bad impression. From what I gather this is the only game ending bug and it's not too far into the game (unlike Twilight Princess' infamous game-ending glitches), but it's still a pain in the ass for a game that's otherwise so polished. I bet a patch will be released soon.

Wow, simply wow. This game is awesome. I picked my LE up yesterday morning at GS and I actually asked the manager wether or not they had any broken ones and he said no. In Fact only 3 LE copies were sent to my GS, one for me, one for the manager and one other guy preordered a PC LE copy. But fortuneatly, lol, my big daddy was broken. The tip of his drill snapped off, What broke on your big daddy?

So I played this game for about 5 hours last night and it was an awesome game, I mean it kept you tense as well as being really creepy like When you were in the medical pavillion and you come up and see Steinman stabbing the body on the table and then there is the three dead bodies tacked to the crossses., that really creeped me out.

Also can anyone tell me with as little spoilers as possible when you will be able to get more Plasmid slots?

Does anyone else feel that playing on Hard sort of interrupts the narrative?

I'm no videogame beginner but where I am now on hard, I'm dying very, very frequently and the wonder of the first couple levels is being replaced by frustration. I think I'm going to start over later today on Normal. I want my first completion of the game to be about the story, not about the insane fights I managed to get myself killed in. Later I can worry about going through on a higher difficulty.

I just caught this off another forum.

Minor spoilers on powers? "You will love this when you can start pitting 2 big daddies against each other and walk away with almost 200 dollars and only have to use a hand full of bullets."

How the hell do you pull that off? That sounds awesome!

There is a plasmid that you get that enables to have a big daddy on your side for a short period of time.

Not a spoilers since its in the manual. You can buy more slots with Adam once you find some Gather's Gardens. However, you just go see those or the other machine that lets you switch them out until after the medical level.

On another note: Anyone else fully upgrade the bee power and find it completely pointless but totally hillarious?

You don't have to start over to switch difficulties. You can do it from the pause menu. Which begs another question - can you get the hard achievement by switching to hard right before the end?

If that is the case, I might consider playing the remainder of the game on Easy and play Normal my second time through so I can just concentrate on the story. I think I'm different from most gamers where I play games for storyline and immersiveness first, and challenge second. Though if a game is purely action based like Halo and Gears, I never play Easy. I heard Big Daddies are ridiculously easy to take down though on the lowest difficulty level and most normal enemies die in one hit.

The AI is different. In easy it's really easy to kill the splicers/etc, on Medium it's a little harder, and on hard they're pretty hard to kill and smarter.
I'm playing on medium, and that's pretty alright for me.

Quick question (friend picked up my special edition copy for me since I'm out of the country until next week). I'm kind of paranoid I got a broken copy and can't check the box myself, but my friend took pictures and said it looks fine (emailed them to me). He did say that all the boxes at EB had some rattle to them.

Does this mean I'm screwed and that something (the figure or a dvd) is broken/loose?

If your figure is broken go to the 2k website, they'll replace it and give you a printed art book to boot. I highly doubt the game is loose, you're fine.

If you really want a challenge in this game, don't put it on hard, that just makes you take far more damage. Just turn off auto-aim.

I found the game to be a little too generous with auto-aim. Just fire in the general direction and you will hit.

Finally got the game today.

Played for a couple hours.

Most amazing moments:

Finding the shotgun. Lights go off and you are surrounded by splicers. Absolutely insane.

Advertisement for "dealing with splicing".

Woman: "What's happening to me, I feel odd, and sometimes I imagine things that aren't there"

Man: "You'll be fine, but maybe it's time to hold back on the splicing: remember: a slow splicer is a happy splicer."

And then Dr. Whatshisname (the plastic surgeon). Wow. Feaky shit.

Also all the quotes on the wall, refferences. This stuff is amazing. "Above all do no harm" writen in blood on the ground. "Aesthetics is a moral imperitive."

This is some very heavy stuff in the first hour of gameplay. After beating Dr. Saltsman (or whatever his name was), I unloaded nearly all the amo I collected (before finally finding the pool of whater in the basement I should have used to begin with), and I'm exhausted from playing this game.

Absolutely amazing.

So, keeping in mind I've only beaten the first boss (maybe second boss, if you count that one guy with the grenades in the Creamatorium), here's a prediction:

Little sisters and Big Daddys were part of the splicer resistance. Doesn't seem to me Ryan (at least in his "right" mind) would have thought up of them.

So I've been wanting this game for months and I played and replayed the demo just frothing at the idea of being able to play the full game. I had a blockbuster coupon for a free game rental so I stopped yesterday and got the first copy. I was the first person to rent the game from this blockbuster. I drive home and throw it in my 360 and as the disc tries to spin my 360 makes a noise like a choking duck. I tried a few discs and sure enough my 360 maintained the mallard with emphysema sounds. Curse you Xbox, curse you Bioshock!

Now I have this game out for five days and half-price rentals for two weeks (if I want to rent another game it's $3.50 for five days). My coupon was even expired, but the lady was so nice she used it any way.

Hmmm... shooting from the gut here: Atlas was the leader of the resistance, maybe. Perhaps he was directly responsible for some of the most fucked up stuff (developing Little Sisters, etc). Maybe he's using you to do more than find his family.

I found the game to be a little too generous with auto-aim. Just fire in the general direction and you will hit.
Yeah, but the challenge is to hit them in the head, especially when they're swarming you and everything's riddiculously intense. Pulling off a headshot is so intense and rewarding in this game.

There's just so much going on in the game, even just in the environment. I just find myself reading things off the wall for a few minutes at a time. Or just staring, jaw-ajar, at the amazing graphical power being shoved onto my TV. Even as such, I'm sure I'm missing a ton. So refreshing to not just have wall after wall of sci-fi metal walls. The future is boring; the past with crazy crap is where its at! ;)

It's werid, I wasn't even following this game at all (I got it and Fallout 3 confused easily--tells you how much I knew about it), up until about a week and a 1/2 ago when the scores started coming in. I used no strategy at all and just stood there like The Terminator and machine gunned him down. After the battle I noticed my health bar went down not even 20 percent.

It doesn't matter what you purchase, as far as I can tell. I like to open up slots (cause using plasmids is the best).

As for the first boss being easy... WOW! He was so intense for me on Medium.

I definitely have been playing my heart out, running out of ammo at times, crawling around scared and desperate for a health pack. Medium is DEFINITELY the way to go. If you play this game on easy, you will be ruining the whole experience for yourself.

Easy is for people who are brand new at shooters. Period.

Personally, I can't imagine what hard would be like if I'm only playing on medium.

I'm in Arcadia right now.

WARNING! BIG SPOILER IF YOU AREN'T IN ARCADIA YET!!!! Dear God I hope Atlas's family didn't die... I so want to hold out a bit of hope for the guy.

Here's another note:

Hacking is a blast! Seriously, I almost want to disable my engineering plasmids so I can have the full challenge with hacking.

I just want to say, using telekenisis is an absolute blast. There is nothing more satisfying than tossing a fuel barrel into a gang of splicers.

I'm sure they are, but I can't understand the thick scottish accents that half the residents of Rapture seem to possess. Can anyone just give me a run down?

Okay, playing on Easy is officially TOO easy. I decided to check out that difficulty level for about an hour and after facing the first boss, Dr. Steinman, he barely made a dent to my health. I used no strategy at all and just stood there like The Terminator and machine gunned him down. After the battle I noticed my health bar went down not even 20 percent.

Like I said before, one alternative to monkeying with the difficulty is to take off auto-aim. It plays much differently then. Try it for a spell.

Then turn on the subtitles from the pause menu.

Didn't know you could subtitle the audio diaries. Thanks for the tip :D

Err... that's australian, friend.

My problem is when the voices are too soft to hear over the huge amounts of noise in the game (explosions, bangs, and music)... also when you're listening to a diary during dialogue (like when ghosts are talking).

Perhaps there's an option in the pause menu to turn up the voices (or turn everything else down).

Another note:

I like how ammo/health/money is handled. Keeps you switching between weapons, buying stuff, and scavenging. At first when it said "wallet full" I though "wtf??" but now I realize it really improves the flow (no pun intended) of the game.

I noticed the game seems to randomly drop ammo when you return to areas. I'd leave an area and come back later finding electro buck shells and pistol rounds all over the place. Never any health or syringes, just ammo.

No, it's Irish. From a post by Ken Levine:

You can turn on subtitles.

Is there a way to know if you can see how many things you have hacked? Also, is there a new game+ where you keep your stuff from the past play through?

No to both, to my best knowledge.

This is officially the scariest game I have ever played. I am a huge fan of games that are supposed to creep you out (fear, condemned) but they've never really done much for me. Playing Bioshock... I've had goosebumps 90% of the game. It's just so perfect, from the whispers of the splicers just around the corner to the creepy music playing at the wrong (or right) moments.

The only reason I'm not playing right now is to give myself time to recover, I'm scared crapless... hahahaha I feel like such a wussy.

Don't read this spoiler unless you've been in the basement of Sinclair Spirits!

I have never in my life been so scared as the moment I went down into the hidden basement in the Sinclair Spirits building inside of Fort Frolic knowing something just HAD to happen, picking up the item on the table... turning around seeing the frozen splicer thinking 'hmm, was that there before?' only for it to come alive and attack me. HOLY crap did I squeel, I didn't think I was capable of doing that.

Don't feel like a wussy. I'm the vagina in the CAG community. I haven't even opened up my copy yet...I keep convincing myself to play it later. In reality...I'm a HUGE vag and pretty much frightened to death of Rapture.

But, I also convinced myself that this is a game I have to play and I will do so. I think the last time I dreaded playing a game was the Ravenholm section in Half-Life 2. After watching videos of the Howlers, or whatever those things were called that fucking crawl everywhere and lunge at you, I wanted no part of that town. But, I powered through it and felt a real sense of accomplishment after riding the mine cart the fuck out of there.

Wow. Bioshock was a little creepy, yes.. but Condemned had a lot more scary moments imo.

I just got done playing a pretty good section of the game. Again, its crafted excellently, no graphic or framerate hitches that the Gamespot review talked about-- and I've put a solid 6 or 7 hours into it. Excellent stuff. Pyro is right about it being draining though-- I gotta take a break.

My one complaint isn't even really about the game, just the fact that I feel like I need huge amounts of time in order to sit down and play this game. I try to tell myself "just an hour, that should be enough for this level" and it would have, if it wasn't for the sheer amount of optional stuff I just had to do (the rewards were sure worth it). That's not even mentioning the fact where I ended up playing through the boss fight THREE times, reloading my save each time, just to kill him a different way each time.

For those of you wondering, I was referencing the 2nd level, and how after getting the Fire ability (which is optional itself), you can open up two new areas. Speaking of which, the morgue / funeral home area scard the bejebus out of me.

Bioshock pretends it's a linear game, but the amount of freedom given is nearly un-rivaled.

Move over Dead Rising, I have a new favorite next-gen game . . .

Yeah, I'm really happy they stuck in that "save anywhere" feature. It helps with the replayability, and really lets you experiment more. I think if this was a checkpoint system or a "you have to enter this room to save" it would have taken away from the experience.

I wish that you could take a screenshot of each save, like in Oblivion, that way you'd know where the save was, so if you wanted to go back and play there you could.

Or even leave notes on the save, like: "Dr. Steinman ahead" or "Hold off the splicers".

So does anyone know what happens if you kill the "glitched" big daddy with the little sister when there is only 3 in the level and you've already harvested all 3? Will you be able to harvest the 4th?

What level is that?

There are no "glitched" Big Daddy's I know of, but there are some Big Daddy's that don't have little sisters. What they'll end up doing is wandering from portal to portal trying to call out a little sister who isn't there. That's not a "glitch", that's just what Big Daddies do.

One of them is in the Botanical level, and I think he's pretty much put there just to help you hold off the splicers.

Is it possible to placate the big daddies after enraging them?
If you are able to escape from a big daddy, eventually he will go back to patroling around, then you can hypnotise him.

No, I think its the Arcadia lvl. I do know of the Big Daddies without little sisters and I realize thats not a glitch. What I'm talking about is I small a Big daddy with a little sister following him when I already harvested all the little sisters in the level.

I had this happen as early as the third level. During one point my Little Sister count on the pause menu for that level read that I had dealt with 5 out of 3. So it is possible to get more than is listed for the level.

How does the achievment work, then? I assume you just have to deal with what's listed in the pase menu for each level.
