Awesome deal if they just didn't charge tax I would so be in. 391.00 still is like pushing for me 350.00 would have been fine with me though. Still a really nice deal if you're looking for the system. I wish system came out with rumble already. Also I tried my Florida address came to 370 , but nothing special on the system for me yet to pay that.

that's so tempting. i told myself i would wait for it to come with rumble controllers bundled at the very least before i bought one, though

not sure how this warrants a thread as a video game deal... its applying for a credit card that gives you 150 off any purchase. I did this a while back when it was 250 off 500, and this too can be used anywhere.

Throw it on a different credit card and wait for the refund. If you'd apply for a Sony Visa you probably don't care that much about being in debt anyway. ;)

Hmm, looks like it says it on the home page itself: "Free Shipping on Everything. Ends Thursday." Added a PS3 to the shopping cart (without signing up for a Visa card, aka no $150 credit) and got this:
Price:
$499.99
and as low as $16.99/month No Interest, No Payments Until 2009
Tax: $41.25
Shipping: INCLUDED
Estimated Total: $541.24
Can't find anything else that talks about shipping, though.

Well, on the CC it says on any purchase over $299. So couldn't you just apply for the card, get approve and than go purchase it at Amazon.com for no tax and free shipping, and you'll still get credited the $150.

Now that'd be great.
Would the $150 credit be a check? Because I'd just pay off the card asap so I don't get hit with APR and chances are wouldn't use it ever again.
Edit: 1. Sony Card is issued by Chase Bank USA, NA, and is subject to credit approval. Card credit will be applied to your Sony Card account 8-12 weeks after your first purchase of $299 or more ("Qualifying Purchase") at SonyStyle.com or Sony Style Stores. Offer expires August 31, 2007. First purchase must be made by November 30, 2007.
I wonder if I can apply for the credit card in a sony style B&M store on that tax-free weekend comming up soon. No shipping, no tax and $150 credit FTW!

That would be a good deal for you. Read also the intro apr rate, there is no interest for 12 months, as long as you make your payments on time. For those without a PS3, it might be worth jumping on this. Although not really a deal, just easy way to get a PS3.

Weak. Paying via credit cards is noob shit.
Building credit so you can get larger sums of money lent for things like a house, car, etc. is noob sh*t. Call me a noob then, responsible people use credit wisely, and are better off for it, paying off the balance in full each month. Now if you lack all discipline, that's your own problem.

No tax on Amazon? Is this for all states? Edit: Nevermind saw the bolded "purchase at sony style" part.
I may have to force my sister to sign up for one (I signed up back in Jan. for $150 without the spending restriction)
About the credit, if you leave the credit sitting there, I think after a certain time they'll automatically send you a check. At least that's what happened with me. I used part of the credit but had like $50 sitting in there for a few months and out of the blue I received a check for it.

I applied for this card a few months ago for a different deal. I received a $100 credit on my statement after my first purchase. I bought some shoes with it and sushi ;D. Obviously, this one is only good if you want to buy something such as a TV or console. The free shipping ends today which makes it less desirable. And the 5 free blu-rays you choose from the selection are medicore at best. At least they still have some of those $500 ps3s.

nah, actually part of your credit score is determined by dividing your total debt over the amount of all credit cards you have and averaging the totals, regardless of whether you pay off on time or not. In the long run, it will drop your score slightly regardless of whether you pay it off or not. But to be honest, it wont make the slightest bit of deal if applying for a loan.

Based on that as long as you pay them all off and have no debt, you'd see no effect.

Anybody else actually try this. The card says 12 months no APR, with the $150 off I figured I'd bite. But there was no instant approval for me, said I would be notified in writing. I have excellent credit and there is no reason I wouldn't be approved. I was just wondering if that is their scam, not giving most people instant approval so they get their credit card applications. Any one else apply and get instant approval????

Instant approval here...and I have a Sony Style store close by :) AND if the card comes by next Friday, I'll be in Rehoboth, DE, and there's no tax in Delaware so I'll save another 6% there!
And yea, for those worried about the $150 credit being 2-3 months away, note that the card is no interest for the first 12 months, so you won't be paying any interest before you actualy get the credit.

In some instances an application may require additional processing, in which case Instant Credit will be unavailable. When you are approved for the Sony Card, you will receive your account and CVV2 number on-screen. Please make sure to make note of your account and CVV2 number as this information will not be available until you receive your card in the mail. If you are approved, you will be able to make a one-time purchase at SonyStyle.com only, with up to a maximum line of credit of $5,000. Additional purchases with this account cannot be made until your card is received in the mail. This promotional offer is available for new Sony Card account holders only; existing Sony Card account holders or accounts are not eligible. The Qualifying Purchase must post to your account between August 1, 2007 and November 30, 2007.
ONLY A Sony Style.com purchase. And not EVERYONE will be instantly approved... so...

I also did this a couple of weeks ago, but bought a USED 60GB PS3 from Amazon.com from GoHastings.com for $399.99 + shipping. So hopefully once the $100 credit comes in after 8-12 weeks, I can say I got a 60GB PS3 for $303.98 :) - Kinda just wanted to brag ;)

Anyway, i applied this deal back in Jan/Feb when it was $150... The thread was in the deal forum for some times, but eventually got moved to other deals. It was an awesome deal back then, i scored my Wii for $11 or so (including NYC's insane sale tax).
Well, the $150 was suppose to be used for the PS3, but i couldn't get a descent deal back then, so i spent it on the Wii. Total i paid for both system was $561.25 (Wii, PS3, 2gb SD card, extra Sixaxis, Genji).

Well, here's what I'm doing:
1. Use the card in a Sony Style store, and you still qualify for the $150 credit, and no shipping, obviously.
2. I'm buying mine at the Sony Style in Delaware, where there is no sales tax...I happen to be going there next week. If I bought it here in PA I'd be paying 6-7% tax.
3. THe promotion also gives you 8 Sony points for every $1 spent, so you'll end up with about 4000 points. You can redeem them here: www.sonyrewards.com . 4000 will get you a Blu-ray movie, or a greatest hits game. I'll probably get the memory card adaptor.
4. Don't forget your 5 free Blu-ray DVD's!
So, for $350, I'm getting a PS3, 5 free DVD's, and a memory card adaptor. Ya can't beat that! :)

Even through Amazon.com it would be $500 with free shipping and no tax. (I have to pay sales tax on Amazon.com purchases)

I was instantly approved a few months ago. I seem to be easily approved with chase and citibank cards, but discover and bank of american don't seem to like me even though I have great credit. Usually, if not always, if you aren't instantly approved then you can forget about seeing the email 30 days later which almost never arrives. They don't use any tricks like you mentioned. The "no sales tax days" are specific to the state, not the SonyStyle store. When a state has a "no sales tax day", none of the stores have sales tax. They typically do them close to the beginning of the school year, so around now.

I hate to say it, but this whole deal doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to me.
The Sony CC is no more related to the PS3 than any other credit card offer other than they both have the words "Sony" on them.
Why not just use one of the $250 cash back credit card offers (like the Iowa rewards one) and buy the PS3 at the store of your choice like Amazon with no tax and free shipping?
That comes out to $249.99 SHIPPED.
Why pay $100 more just to use a card that has the word Sony on it?

I haven't had any problems with Chase (use Chase as my bank, and a Chase credit card). I primarily use my American Express card, but Chase has been problem free for me as far as everything is concerned.
And this is not really an incredible deal...I have enough credit cards as it is, and all ones I prefer to have over this one (2 Visas, 1 Mastercard, and 1 AMEX). AMEX in particular is my favorite for things such as fraud protection - you're not liable for any expenses for a stolen AMEX card, no conditions attached.

I wouldn't say horrible, but opening or applying for a card will take a point or two off your credit score and than immeadiately closing will take another couple of points off. While doing this once or twice won't really affect your credit it can add up if you do it all the time.

I might go for this deal. I plan to use the card for a couple of months maybe charging $20 - $30 a month on it and then stop using it. I like reward cards but I am currently saving up for amusement park tickets with another credit card so I want to keep using that as my primary card.

one guestion guys...
Any idea when this offer for the card expires? I don't plan on getting a PS3 until the "slim" version with all the bugs/overheating problems are fixed...probably in late 2008.
Can I still get the $150 credit next year?

Looks like you have to apply for the card by Aug 31st and make your first purchase by Nov....I forget if itts Nov 1st or 31st. Either way, you won't be able to wait until next year. And the credit hits after you make your first purchase with it.

thanks op i ordered this last night when i saw a posting on anandtech
also to note there is another promo which involves points you accumulate for every purchase at sonystyle, 8 pts /$1 which when ordering the ps3 comes out to about $40 (100 pts = $1), i am not sure about the details but its nice none the less. so 500+tax-150-40 = about 345.00 and its no int for 12 months so that gets me a ps3 for less then $30 /mon for a yr.
good shit if you ask me.

If you didn't get approved instantly, then you can probably forget about getting the card. They will send a letter denying that says you were not approved blah blah blah. I didn't get instant approval either but my credit score is over 700. Maybe you have to have no debt at all.

AND never miss a payment its fine.
But if you plan on doing anything like getting a loan, applying for an apartment etc... its so not worth it.

This is all horse shit. Opening a new credit card account has such a minimal effect on your credit score. The idea that it would prevent you from getting an apartment is stupid at best, and 360fanboy deception at worst.
Your credit score is more of a "pass/fail" than anything else. When you get your loan, you don't get a better rate because you have an 800 credit score. Either you get the going interest rate or not. Besides, any tiny effect would only last for a couple of months.
To save $150 on your purchase is the best deal that you will find on any console. Anybody ranting against this offer is insane.

ROFL have you ever even applied for a loan? Your interest rate on a mortgage is directly tied to your credit score. A broker wont even show you rates on loans you dont qualify for.
The "going interest rate" seriously, thats not how mortgages work, otherwise why would you even need a broker or multiple lenders?
Just ask the MILLIONS of people defaulting on ARM mortgages about "getting the going rate or not"
Fixed rate mortgage is the primary way to buy a house that you plan to live in for 10+ years. Your fixed rate has EVERYTHING to do w/ your credit score.
Here is a post from a diff user on a diff board who puts it another way
---------------------------------
QUOTE:
I think it's a terrible idea to apply for a 23.99% APR credit card just to save $150.
First, you do get a ding on your credit score. It might be just a few points, but that can be huge if/when you apply for an important loan (like a home loan) and you happen to be on the border between qualifying for one loan package or the other. It could mean the difference of paying an extra $25/month in interest on a 30 year loan or paying an extra $1,000 or so on a down payment to make up for the slightly worse rate you get because of those few points.
Second, some financial institutions will hold available credit against you. Meaning, if you're applying for a loan and they see that you have a credit card with a $5,000 limit, they may treat that $5,000 limit as if you actually borrowed it. Technically speaking, you are entitled to borrow that $5,000 at any time. So, this may be seen as a risk that a financial institution takes into account.
Third, if you open and immediately close a credit card, you may be flagged for fraud. Credit bureaus are heavily marketing fraud products to financial institutions that basically send alerts to the financial institution about things like this. Even if it's one time, a financial institution can be sent that information. It's up to the financial institution to decide what they want to do with that info.
Finally, I'll defer to an old russian saying that I happen to think is a hilarious response to telemarketers when they ask if I want a free gift: "There's always free cheese in a mousetrap." This credit card bonus isn't being offered without strings. Not only does their research show that if you apply, you will not pay off the amount before the 0% interest promo expires, $150 is totally worth it to them to buy all of your personal information for their own marketing purposes. They may also sell your personal information once they have it unless you tell them not to in writing, which their research shows that you typically will not do even if they make it convenient for you by sending you the form to tell them not to share your personal info.
Just an FYI, writing financial software is my job and I happen to specialize in credit reporting software. I just finished two projects involving products intended to alert financial institutions to possible fraud. I've coded a product that got the raw data from a credit bereau and calculated the credit score (though I admit, it was a few years ago and I've forgotten some of the exact details). I've also wrote several programs that automated much of the loan approval process
---------------------------------------------------------------
ask any financial planner about "saving money on 1 time purchases by opening a new credit card" and their heads will explode. Its the worst way to buy something hands down.

ROFL have you ever even applied for a loan? Your interest rate on a mortgage is directly tied to your credit score. A broker wont even show you rates on loans you dont qualify for.
You are so full of crap in everything that you posted here.
General Warning: Don't listen to expane. He isn't giving accurate information.
The fact is that almost all lenders will offer you the exact same rate. If anybody wants to check this, go to two seperate lenders and you will see. They will offer you near, if not identical, packages.
People defaulting on ADJUSTABLE Mortgage Rate loans would have nothing to do with your credit score or the rate you would receive. Those people are in trouble because they are suckers who can't afford a loan at 10% and stupidly thought that their adjustable rate would always stay around 5%. This is just one example of how expane is showing that he is pulling his incorrect figures out of his backside.
Fixed rate mortgage is the primary way to buy a house that you plan to live in for 10+ years. Your fixed rate has EVERYTHING to do w/ your credit score.
Your rate gives you either a "yes" or a "no" for most lenders. If your score is bad, you may end up only getting a "yes" from "John's House of Shitty Home Loans", but most people with decent credit can get a loan from anybody. Your actual interest rate is more tied to how much money you are willing to put as a down payment.
Instead of quoting the rest of your crap (that you are now quoting from somebody else because you don't know yourself), I'll just address them.
First: If your credit score goes from 730 to 725, it is NOT going to effect you getting a loan. If you have really bad credit, you probably have bigger concerns to deal with than opening a credit card account. If you have terrible credit, you couldn't even get the card. The likelyhood that you would lose out anything on your mortgage loan is slim to none.
Second: Some financial institutions will hold it against you if you don't have enough credit. Banks want to see that you have some debt and you have a history of paying your debt. Opening a new credit card is good for some people, especially people just trying to establish a credit history.
I know of an example where a bank denied somebody because they had too much available credit. They had a single card with a maximum available balance of $100,000. Banks are more worried about that than somebody taking their $5000 limit, cashing it out, and moving to Mexico.
THIRD: Don't immediately close your account, if you are that worried. They are more worried about people with late payments, bankrupcy, or collections.
FINALLY: CheapyD may have already sold your personal information for all that you know. This is a silly concern. If you are getting any junk mail then you are already on somebody's list. Just like anything, people need to be responsible enough to actually pay off the bill. If you can't be responsible enough to do this then it's best if you just stay in your mom's basement.
FYI: Somebody coding financial software does not a credit expert make...
Saving money on a one time purchase (15% off at Sears) may not be the best idea, but saving $150 off a $500 purchase is definately worth it!

Listen kid, no need to flame here, its CAG take it down a notch and drop your personal attacks against my name.
You are mixing and matching convenient credit info to try and support you argument. Let me explain it to you, these "credit arguements" get long and off topic since credit is such a complex issue
Here it is in a nutshell
Open a new credit card, get $150 credit to your account. That is the "deal"
The question is whether or not it is "worth it" to open a new credit card to "save" $150 one time.
obviously it will be worth it to *SOME* people. Those people are
1. people who dont have credit cards already
2. people who dont plan on doing anything in the next 2 years that will incur a credit check. House loan, apartment lease, car loan, student loan the list goes on and on
3. people who are really short on cash and $150 is such a big deal that they will go through the hassle of dinging their credit just to save $150
Brokers offer loans from different lenders, lets say you want to buy a house.
You go to a broker and you can get "pre approved" they run a credit check, then they run that number and your history to see what loans you can get.
Say you get pre approved for a 5.0% loan from a lender. Now you go an open a credit card w/ sony, suddenly your credit history has changed, you may no longer qualify.
Some lenders will offer a really good rate w/ points but be very particular about who they qualify, that type of loan is very much dependant on your score and YES a few points will affect it.
As was mentioned if you open it, and then close it right away, that is another red flag on your credit report.
In the end its your credit history, do whatever you want with it, I gain nothing either way.
I was simply giving CAGs a heads up that opening a credit card for $150 is not a unique deal and is not really a deal at all.
I get hundreds of credit card offers every week w/ much better deals.
Lastly, you are now accusing CAG cheapyD of feeding all our our personal info to SPAMMERS? WTF Kid you better be careful w/ accusations like that

I'm not sure if you know this, but this website is called CHEAP ASS GAMER. People here are looking to save $5 on new releases, or get a 2 for 1 trade-in deal at GameStop. I'm sorry if you are so high and mighty that you like to flush $150 away, but I'm guessing that MOST people on CHEAP ASS GAMER are interested in saving $150.
Say you get pre approved for a 5.0% loan from a lender. Now you go an open a credit card w/ sony, suddenly your credit history has changed, you may no longer qualify.
If you are in the process of buying a house, don't apply for a credit card. That only really matters if you are IN THE PROCESS of buying a house. Your lender, if they are worth their salt, would tell you the same. How many people here are currently in the process of purchasing a house? This doesn't mean looking at the idea, or even looking for property, but actually through the process of applying for the loan to make the purchase? Few, if any. You are just putting a straw man.
Some lenders will offer a really good rate w/ points but be very particular about who they qualify, that type of loan is very much dependant on your score and YES a few points will affect it.
The chances are slim to none that this will happen. The parts that I am skipping from your post here are items that I previously addressed. I am stating again, expane is simply not truthful to people about this things. He is either lying or ignorant, or maybe a little of both.
I was simply giving CAGs a heads up that opening a credit card for $150 is not a unique deal and is not really a deal at all.
I get hundreds of credit card offers every week w/ much better deals.
$150 gift is a very unique deal. You are just lying again. Nobody is telilng people "You have to use the credit card and rack up a $1000 balance."
According to you, you get 29 offers per day that are all better than "take a free $150". ... 29 offers EVERY SINGLE DAY... that's what you really expect us to believe? :applause:
People went apeshit at the $100 PS3 drop and the $50/$30/$20 360 drop. It's amazing that somebody of your stature would spend time slumming at CHEAP ASS GAMER, a website that's focus is looking for deals with video games. Since $150 is no big deal to somebody such as yourself, why bother looking for $10 discounts on games and such?
Lastly, you are now accusing CAG cheapyD of feeding all our our personal info to SPAMMERS? WTF Kid you better be careful w/ accusations like that

I'm not going to get into a flame war with you that is not what this board is about. If you disagree and think opening a new credit card every time there is a $150 cash back offer, go right ahead.
However you attempts to flame me and weak baiting are pointless and off topic. CAG VGD is not about flame wars and trolling. I respectfully decline your invitation to get into a back and forth with your rants. ROFL you even tried to accuse me of being a "360 fanboy" because i was talking about the risks of opening a new credit card? Seriously kid you need a reality check.
Its very simple.
Open new credit card to save $150 or not.
This "sony" branded card is no different than the thousands of other credit card offers out there.
Go ahead and talk to your own financial advisers and ask what they think about opening a new credit card every time you want a 1 time savings of $150 on a purchase of a very low resale item like electronics.
If you don't like my opinion, that is perfectly fine. I get nothing out of it one way or the other. Go open 100 credit cards for all I care.
But you come here and try and flame and ignite some sort of neogaf argument it is off base and needless.
Seriously this isn't some conspiracy theory. Credit card companies offer incentives DAY AND NIGHT , what makes this "sony" deal any different/special?
nothing, absolutely nothing. Its your standard open a new credit card deal.
Should we now post every single credit card bonus on CAG?
How about the 4 american express offers I got yesterday in the mail, should I post those as CAG deals too?
You know WaMu has a "deal" where you can transfer your existing credit and get 0% financing, is that now a CAG deal?
I simply weighed in with my opinion based on my experience with financial advisers. Everyone should have their own financial advisers and work w/ them on things like credit management.
You jumped in like a n00b and attacked me personally instead of offering a different opinion in a respectful manner. I have news for you, this aint neogaf or 1up or gamefaqs.
CAG has a much different tone, we dont like to engage in personal attacks and flame wars.

It's a universal truth you need to examine your credit history at least six months before you are looking to buy a house. With that in mind, you shouldn't be opening any new lines of credit for six months before that.

what's up with the arguments? While both side got good points, but i gotta agree with the $150 thing... I don't know about you, but to me $150 opening a card is a good deal (i opened a Sear card for $30 on first purchase). I don't know any good CC offers out there b/c don't get a lot of junk mails. I don't think having few CCs gonna kill your rating (i believe the magic number is less than 10).
Bottom line is, if you're a responsible person, chances are your credit history is clean and good (unless someone stole your id).

I know credit is a complicated issue. But I've been utilizing deals with credit cards for quite some time. ALways buying something at 0% and opening a new card or something. I still have excellent credit, and got top notch deals on mortgages and vehicles. Heck, we tend to trade in our vehciles almost every 2 years and its not really hurting our credit.
So I think it depends on so many factors.....that the people who are trying to watch every single credit point....may not want to open a credit card. But I think that most people....saving 150 bucks is a pretty large amount and opening yet another credit card (assuming you have the cash to pay it off) is such a small ding, if any ding, on your credit that the pros outweigh the cons. I have about 5-6 cards open, all with no balance except my main Visa I use. I tend to open a couple new ones each year to buy stuff, and I'll close a few to keep it balanced out. Still excellent credit.
So anyways, there are no universal rules to credit.

I hold a Platinum American Express Card, I have NO debts (haven't had any in years), I've lived at my current residence for over a decade, I have a good job and a healthy savings account. Also my credit score is great.
I'm completely stumped as to why I would be rejected. I don't even have that many credit cards. I only have the AMEX, a Target Card and my ATM.
huh
Maybe it's time to check your credit report for identity theft...

This is a pretty good deal, actually. I am working on the $375 payout at yourps34free, so I may try to use that to get this PS3, rather than trying to earn enough points to get the PS3 instead of the payout.

I felt the need to chime in here...
I applied for the Sony card about a week and a half ago. I got screwed because when I signed up for the card the offer was for $100 off. Anyways, when I applied online I didn't get a message saying if I was approved or not. All I got is a thank you, do not apply again, we will contact you within 30 days.
I didn't know what to think! Well, a week later my new Sony card came in the mail. Let me say that I hate credit cards and have very few of them. I think credit cards are for the most part evil and dangerous, but I really think this one is decent. No interest for the first twelve months, the $100 Sony credit (now $150), and the Sony rewards program make this a very compelling offer.
I don't think anyone has mentioned that if you use the Sony card to buy a PS3 at a Sony store or SonyStlye.com in August you get 8 Sony points for every $1 spent. That is enough to get a FREE Blu-ray movie! I will be picking up my PS3 at the Sony store, so I will be getting my PS3 for approximately $400 plus SIX free Blu-ray movies.
This really is a great deal. Anyone who doesn't think so shouldn't be on CheapASSGamer. :)

Just wanted to share my exeperience so far, in case there are some people who are thinking about doing it.
I applied for the card 2 days ago and I got an instant approval, but no CVV number (as sonystyle said it would give). So I wasn't able to order the PS3 yet.
Today, I got a call from Chase (the Sony card is essentially a Chase card), to verify that I signed up for a new card. It was for fraud prevention purposes, and because I already have one card with Chase. I told them yes it was me, and went through some verification processes, etc. The rep then told me my card will be overnight-shipped to my address and I should receive it tomorrow by 5pm.
Once I get the card tomorrow, I can order the PS3 (although I may wait til it's FREE SHIPPING again, as a previous post mentioned it's every week, between Tues-Thurs), or I actually may end up buying something else with it. I must say, I've been on the fence about buying a PS3 or an 360 for many months now, and with this deal, I was sold on the PS3. But with all the latest news in the 360/HDMI/65nm chips, I'm not quite sure what to buy anymore! For the most part, all the games I want to play this Fall are coming out on both systems!
Anyways, all in all, for me, it was a pretty painless experience and in my situation won't hurt my credit. I'm still pretty young and I only have 2 credit cards right now. I think for those that are concerned about this deal hurting your credit, I wouldn't sweat it too much if you don't do this kind of thing often. There's nothing wrong with holding a few credit cards!

Wow, you could make $3,000 per month just by selling the stuff you bought on Ebay and banking part of the $150 profit.
That is of course, if you were actually telling the truth... which you are not.

PM me your mailing address and I will send you all my credit card offers as I get them.
Of course opening 1 credit card would impact trying to open another so its technically impossible to apply and get approved for the offers.
But anyone w/ a mailbox knows about CC offers that come every day, I'm also quite sure you are a cowardly assface. Are you trying to tell us that CC companies dont snail mail spam people? You couldn't make a more ridiculous statement
I only say this after you have repeatedly flamed me, called me a liar and accused CheapyD of "probably selling our personal information"

Having no debt, good checking account and all doesn't mean you're giving a green light for new credit cards...
Some times a CC company turn you down b/c you're a dead beater to them (i.e. you pay your balance in full all the times). They don't make money off you, thus they don't want you to have their "special" card.

Ok now I'm really suspcious of this offer. I sent this link to my friend, a man who owns and operates his own business. I know this guys has decent credit and yet he too was rejected.
Honestly, and I mean no offense to the person who started this thread, I think this deal is a scam. Not only that I think they are using this as bait to acquire your personal information so that they might bombard you with future credit offers.
I was so worried about not getting accepted that I had my credit score checked. My family accountant told me that Credit Card companies pull this trick all the time. They put out the bait and then only a handful of people are actually accepted for the offer.
I do not want to argue with anyone. Nor do I wish to be insulted by new members. (Some of whom sound suspciously like viral marketers). But it is my opinion that this deal is a scam.
If you don't like what I've said, then please accept my appology and get on with your life.

While the exact nature of the link could be questionable, but i can assure you that the $100 or $150 Sony CC offer is legit...
I applied one back in Jan and got it approved instantly, i.e. given a number to shop the Sony site right away. The actual CC was mailed to me a week later. Regardless you make purchase or not, the first statement will show a bonus credit of $100 or $150. So basically that's free money...
I cut up/cancel CCs every year... The Sony and Sear card will be can'd next year for sure.

No offense, but most people in this thread have been able to get the offer without a problem. My PS3 was delivered at noon today.

I got my rejection letter in the mail today. The reasons listed were "haven't had credit long enough to establish a credit history and my balances were to high". I am only 25 but I have 2 credit cards since I was 18. There are no balances on either of the cards because I pay them off every month.
I happaned to check my credit score last week because I wanted to buy a new car, my score is not too high I guess, its only a 740. But everything looks legit on my credit history and all the acccounts listed were mine so no fraud or anything.
I am curious what they meant by "balances were too high". I don't have any balance and I barely use the cards

Yes.....AMEX is a one sexy CC bitch.
And it's the best CC at the same time, they send me an average of $350 (cashback) check (not credit) each year just for using them, no annual fee either.
Here's the best part...before AMEX i had Capital One (worst credit card ever!!!) not only there were fees for going over the credit limit but the limit was only $400 for the whole FOUR years i had the stupid card even thought i always paid on time, so then i applied for the Costco AMEX which gave me $3000 to start off with and no ANY kind of fees except a late payment fee which all credit cards have, so now two years later i still have AMEX who upped my credit line to $16000, not that's a great CC!!!
It gets better folks, most CC's like Capital One have a $20-30 fee for each transaction you make if you go over your limit, AMEX on the other hand not only lets you go over the limit with NO fees but ALSO they will increase your credit limit.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but will i still get the $150 back if i make my first purchase at the Sony's Metreon store here in San Francisco?
I was going to wait for the free shipping on Tue or whatever day it is but i work in a postal/parcel warehouse and stuff does get abused, so after seeing that i no longer want anything shipped.

Besides, any tiny effect would only last for a couple of months.\First of all, for people wanting to get a good idea about their credit scores, and how their credit score is calculated, and how that affects them personally, myFICO.com is the industry strandard and will give you a basic run-through of what is taken into account. This is an official site which will give you the truth, and not some idiot trying to sound like he knows what he's talking about when in fact, he doesn't.
To make it easy on some of you too lazy to do the research yourselves:
Payment History: 35% (pay everything ontime, EVERY month?)
Amount Owed: 30% (You have a COMBINED [all your credit cards/loans combined] credit line of $5000, you owe more than 30% of that, your credit goes down, you owe more than 50%, your credit tanks even lower...
Length of Credit History: 15% (Just opened a new card? Your credit drops. Have cards which have been open over 12 months? Your credit looks better.)
New Credit: 10% (similar to above, how many NEW lines do you have open? None is best, one drops you a few points, more than one and you'll drop significantly.)
Types of Credit used: 10% (These store cards, sony/brand cards, et cetera work against your credit rating. AMEX, Bank of America or other BANK credit cards don't hurt you.)
Second point: Knock off the flaming. Now.

I agree with Chochese. You keep posting as if you have to be the last one to say something against your argument with Expane. He was right that you attacked him when all you had to do was give your own opinion without saying anything offensive to him in a respectful manner. You make good clear arguments, but your opinion doesn't mean squat if you flame other forum posters. Thanks Guinavere for the homework....
Now, dude, jumping on this deal is not gonna make your mortgage rate a quarter % higher. Like the other poster said, if you got perfect credit score, you're not gonna get better rate because of it.
If you got bad credit, you're gonna have hard times to get a loan, P-E-R-I-O-D! If for some reason you do get a loan on bad credit score, prepare to pay heavy PMI rates...
Anyhow, this is getting ridiculous... If you're afraid to get into trouble, then don't use this deal. The more i read about people concerning their credit score b/c they don't want to or too lazy/paranoid to apply the Sony card, the more i realize they are just saying the grape is sour...

Is there anything missing from the 60GB version compared to the 80GB version besides the extra hard drive space? I'm a happy 360 owner and never cared to get a ps3, but for under $400 this is reasonable.

Once the 60GB version is gone so is the Emotion Engine chip. The 80GB and all future models will rely on software patches for backwards compatibility like the 360.
I believe the numbers I've seen were 98% with the chip and 78% work with the software version.
I bit the bullet and ordered one. $350 was nice. I've never owned a PS2 either so that helps justify the cost, and mainly why I wanted to jump on this now, before the chip was gone.

Please stop confusing people. PMI can be avoided by putting 20% of the total mortgage as a down payment. You're seen as a less of a credit risk if you show you have the discipline to save that much cash. If you have bad credit scores, you will get a higher interest rate.

if you can't put 20 down, many times people are being denied these days, just a few years ago people would buy houses w/ 0 down (insane)
We got our house even w/ a lower bid simply because we had the 20% whereas all other bids were 0-5%. Seller had already had a contract not work out because some 0% buyer who was "pre approved" got denied when the final paperwork went through. I think our bid was 30-50K less than their bid too.
Even in the down market, where i live there is no such thing. sales might go down but prices never do. If we didnt love the house so much it would be a perfect flip opportunity, but we'd flip and then have no where to live as no houses we want in this hood are up for sale (only the ones that require 50K of work, eating into any potential flip profit)
At the end of the day its your credit, and you really shouldn't trust anyone's opinion other than your own accountant/financial advisor.
if your FA/CPA tells you to open a sony credit card to buy a PS3, go for it. Enjoy
if you are managing your own credit w/o a CPA/FA ... go nuts

sigh.... enough of this shit man, basically, you're talking about the same thing. I'm not confusing anybody here... If you can put down 20% for the house, chances are you got good credit. Think about it, why would you have shitty credit score if you got cash in the bank? Unless of course, you're getting the 20% from a family memeber... The original AMEX green/gold/black, those have no pre-set limit. But as far as I know, every other AMEX card, the blue, the costco trusaving, etc those are like every other credit card.

If you can put down 20% for the house, chances are you got good credit. Think about it, why would you have shitty credit score if you got cash in the bank?
Gee, I dunno. Why don't you ask the millions of Mexican immigrants who have thousands of dollars in a bank but no credit background whatsoever due to their fear of the American credit system? You clearly are naive, and maybe even a smidge retarded.

I think it said "Oh Hold" until it shipped.
How about a moment of silence for all the disrespected Mexican immigrants with $20,000 in the bank saving to buy a house.:-#

I think the ender was trying to say that since the system is set up to milk college students and the middle class, it's a flawed system. It doesn't bother the lower class that their credit store is in the dumper since they do most of the banking in the ghetto with check cashing joints, pawn shops, and loan sharks. Immigrants send most of their money back to the home country and they usually shack up 10 in a 1 bedroom apartment. Why bother with saving up to buy a house when Section 8 takes care of everything? The system doesn't bother the upper class since they have the cash to qualify for what they want anyway. They only have to watch out that they don't buy so much crap that they bankrupt themselves trying to keep up with the joneses.
The system really isn't about how much money you have and how much debt you have. There's a shadow formula used that people with great credit get denied as they have in this thread. If I applied with my formerly horrible but presently decent credit score, I'd probably get accepted. Again, any system that penalizes you for being responsible and paying your bill everytime is flawed and is only out to hurt middle america.

You are right, banks like you to pay the interest, because the "money" they supposedly lent you, was never really there, it is only there on paper, the Federal Reserve (not federal or a reserve) only requires banks to keep 10% off assets on hand, and quess who is running the Federal Reserve ? PRIVATE BANKERS ! So they really don't have much to loose if you don't pay. Sad but true. Sorry to rant, I am done now. Have a good day all.

Building credit so you can get larger sums of money lent for things like a house, car, etc. is noob sh*t. Call me a noob then, responsible people use credit wisely, and are better off for it, paying off the balance in full each month. Now if you lack all discipline, that's your own problem.
i was going to say something like this. I use the CC to buy things i actually need like groceries and get frequent flier miles from that. Be wary about appling for CC tho, some of them have an annual fee, some dont have an annual fee the first year but then hit you with it the second year.
At least this offer doesnt have an annual fee. If you really want to take advantage of this, you can apply for the card, get approved and get the $150, then cancel after a few months. That would make the most sense imo

That's what I'm doing, just get the ps3 and dump the card once you get the $150 back. I do this usually once a year when I see a good deal on something like this. It doesn't hurt your credit at all, my score is around 740 and have never had problems with buying cars, house, whatever. Just never, ever pay late, that's the credit destoyer.
$300 ps3 after selling DVD player on ebay for $75 and the $150 credit goes on the card. Good deal in my opinion.

yeah this is true afaik if you actually use the CC to purchase something then it shouldnt ding you, if you are buying a $500 game system i would think you are fine. I admit i have not tested this by checking my Cred score before and after doing this. I just look for a what looks like a good offer(usually free airline miles) and get that card and stick with it until it expires, then look for another good offer.

It can. Credit history plays a factor in your FICO score. For example, say you got a card like 8 years ago. You get a new card today maybe with a higher limit. By canceling the old card it's like wiping it away along with 8 year history. Just what I heard.

If you were to never close out the card you would have that credit open which can be seen as unfavorable. Creditors see that as credit you could use, they don't know you cut the card up. They would just see a bunch of open accounts that you could potentially run up.
The only reason I ever use more than 1 card is for the deals like this. Don't open new cards often, like I said I do it maybe once a year. Just don't run mutiple cards for a long time. Temptation can stike and creditors know this.
The best thing is to have one card with a long history (and none of that Macys or Sears crap, come on 22%, are they being run by the mob?). I have one card with a $15,000 limit at 6.9% that I have had for ten years. I use it every month for gas, food etc and pay it off monthy. It helps keep a good credit history, plus it is easy to track my money if I have everything on that one card.
You should try and build a good relationhip with your card company. Anytime someones tries to screw me like ebay or something, I call the card and tell them the deal and they handle it, they don't even question me anymore.

Probably not, this isn't a credit card for newbies either. While I was researching credit cards, checking offers and stuff, it seems this one needs a score of at least 740 just to basically qualify, anything below that and you're almost automatically rejected.

for the previous poster, i don't think this application is instant approval (Chase is the provider, not Sony) and the confirmation comes through the mail (at least mine did, as well as many others ive read about on mobileforums).
this card also allows you to get a Sony Reader, which retails for $300, for $50 plus $9 shipping. Gona use that to cut down on my ever growing stack of manga. Killer deal on this card, if you can get it.

Hope it ships Monday like they said. Now I just need to go buy an LCD HD Tv.
Any suggestions for a good deal on a 32" LCD HD?
Thanks for posting about this deal. I'm very happy with it and would not have pulled the trigger on PS3 so soon but to get it for 350 plus tax plus all the sony rewards points and the 5 free Blu-Rays is such a good deal that I could not let it pass by.
Now I'll be on this forum to find deals on PS3 games and assessories, so I'll be in touch with everyone :D

No, you definitely want to cancel the card. If you continually do that, you will have all this available credit in your credit report which will cause issues when you try to apply for a mortgage or big car loan.

Looks like alot of people are running up a good amount of debt because of this card. If you didn't already have an HDTV, why are you buying a PS3? You have a great Blu-Ray player and a good next-gen system but nothing to showcase it. Now you "have" to go out and buy an HDTV. The credit card companies are laughing all the way to the bank because you just put Daytons on a Yugo and now you want the nicer car to go with the rims.

From what I understand, cancelling cards too quickly hurts your FICO score. The credit report agencies like to see stability: credit cards with a good history of on-time payments, etc. I agree with you that having too many credit cards open is not good. However, closing too many credit cards (to the point that the gap of your actual debt to your "potential" amount of debt you can carry is narrowed) will lower your FICO score. For those cards that you no longer use, you should definitely leave open the accounts with the most history and just cut up the cards. I'm in the field of science, so I am by no means an expert on this. Just my .02.

Offer expires soon, you only have till the 31st to get it. The 80GB will be $450 still not too bad, and you DO get moterstorm (which is great if you wanted the game anyways), also the 80GB has a diffrent bluetooth antena in it so it might not have the droping out problems some people have with the 60GB.

Just for clarification, the offer that expires at the end of this month is to sign up for the Sony Visa Card. The first "qualifying" purchase of at least $299 must be made at either SonyStyle.com or a Sony Style store before November 30, 2007. The credit of $150 will be posted to your card, provided it's in good standing, 8 to 12 weeks after the purchase date. I was able to get the 60 GB version (since I want the full compatibility with the Emotion Engine chip on this version) before it was OOS at the Sony website. It looks like there won't be anymore 60 GB versions at the Sony website since it stated "Out of Stock" whereas the 80 GB version is "Back Ordered."

I don't know if there will be anymore 60 GB versions available in the future at the Sony website. The 60 GB is "Out of Stock" whereas the 80 GB is "Back Ordered." Have you considered going to a Sony Style B&M store if there is one near you? This is also considered a qualifying purchase. You just need to make the purchase by November 30th, although by that time, I'm guessing that the 60 GB version will be completely gone from both the Sony Style website and B&M stores. Good luck!

It's a safe bet, although I would make sure to make the payments early and verify that they go through. Don't pay last minute because if there's a problem, at least you'll have some time to address it. If you have a late payment, there goes the $150 credit! I would also suggest that you pay more than the minimum (at least X2) even though there's 0% APR for a year...that's just me...

The 60GB is now showing in-stock on the website(yesterday it said Instock but Backordered at the same tiem).
Applied for the card but it said they'd let me know the status in writing within 30 days. Anyone have that happen to them and how did it work out?

Gosh I'm agonizing over this.... there arent' any good games and the only ones I want are coming out Q1 of 08....
The more I think about it too full backwards compability is kind of a small extra for me. REAL small.
But when I go buy MGS4 on launch day, I dont want to pay 500$ for an 80Gb version... (suggesting a price drop).
Its like I have a bad feeling of buying it now AND waiting.
Maybe if I knew how much stock they still had.....
They have had this $$$ off to join Sony credit card dealy before, right? So there's a good chance that by Jan-Feb, it'll come back?
So I'm reading the fine print and I find this.... "The minimum gross annual income required for an account is $14,400. You must be at least 18 years old..."
Maybe that's why some people were rejected or will be rejected. I know I dont qualify by that account.

Has anyone who wasn't approved instantly gotten a card in the mail yet? And if so, how long did it take from the time that you applied? I didn't get instantly approved, and I want to get one of the 60GBs before they disappear.

I didn't get instant approval. I got my credit card in the mail a week after I applied online.

60 GB back in stock, with rumors going around that th 80GB will drop its price soon. (did Joystiq lie? well they say its back but the website says different)
Gosh I want to go in at this deal (full backwards compatibility) BUT even at 350, I have no use for those Blu-Ray movies (I dont own an HDTV)
Free Shipping Ends Thursday....... does that mean at the end or beginning of Thursday.....
Did it actually go up in stock? I'm so confused, it still says backordered....
Don't sweat missing the free shipping that ends this Thursday. Even if you don't order by this Thursday, Sony offers the free shipping quite frequently.

They offer free shipping if you order between Tuesday through Thursday. Also I did get a credit card in the mail after it said I wasn't approved, took like two or three weeks, and the credit limit was much higher than I expected. Though by the time I got it, I had already gotten a PS3 from gamestop for much less after trade-ins.
Anybody know anything else that is good to use the credit on? I was looking at the w810i. If anybody else has any other suggestions.

So if the wait is 2-3 weeks there's a good chance the credit card wont arrive in time to get in on the deal?
I keep convincing myself not to go for it AND at the same time to go for it. Quite annoying. I wonder if I'll be able to get an 80Gb PS3 for $300 in the future.... I hate to see that system just sit there for half a year until something decent comes out.
(300$ for 60GB is based off Sony Reward Points, 150$ off, free shipping, Blu-Ray value, and TAXES)

For me, the wait was a week. If you apply ASAP, you SHOULD get the card and be able to place the order for the PS3 by 09/30 (which is the deadline for ordering the PS3 to get the free BR movies). Besides, sonystyle.com has the 60 GB back in stock (even though I think Sony had previously stated that the 60 GB was OOS at their online store warehouse...maybe they found an extra palette?). I would definitely jump on this deal before the 60 GBs are truly OOS. The fact that the 60 GB version has the Emotion Engine chip sealed the deal for me. Just my .02.

I applied august 13th, and the card was just added to my chase account online with a $2000 limit on september 4th. Card still hasn't arrived in the mail but i'm expecting it today or tomorrow based on what the customer support told me. I tried calling to see if I could get the full card information to order and told them that I only signed up for a deal that was expiring the next day but they wouldn't tell it over the phone. Wish the chase website would tell you the full card number and not just the last 4 digits somewhere! :) It's very possible you wont get it before they run out of 60gb's though I'd say..

Thanks Mojimbo (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/member.php?u=3424) vbmenu_register("postmenu_3318033", true); for letting us know the 60 gig PS3's were back in stock. I wanted to take advantage of this deal a week or two ago, but they were out.
I applied for the sony Card, got instant approval and used it to pick up a 60 gig PS3. I talked to the CS at sony and they said it might take 2 billing cycles to get the $150 credit, but since the card has 0% for the first 12 months, just make the minimum payment the first month then you could pay it off the second bill once the credit is posted. I plan on using all 12 months, always use other peoples money aka sony card every change you get!
I was charged state sales tax on the purchase though, anyone else have to pay sales tax? I live in PA and we have a Sony Plant, maybe that is why?

I didn't get the instant approval but got a call like 7 days later telling me that I got approved and then was told that it was 7-10 wait for the card to arrive. I asked for the code so that I could order the PS3 online and they told me that they couldn't give me my info over the phone. It's been a total of almost 3 weeks now and still no card in the mail!

Thought I'd try for the hell of it...got the usual "we are reviewing your application. you will be notifed in writing within 30 days". Oh well, if I didn't get it, just means the less extra debt that I can put myself into...

The CC app page says only $100 back on $299. Is this the new promotion? No games. Not ready to get it if it's gonna be $400 + tax.
60 gb PS3 is "Backordered" again.

I wonder if they're doing this just to drive sales. I mean scarcity makes people buy things when otherwise they wouldn't.... and I'm one of them. If I do miss out right now I hope the 80GB drops 100-200$ in the next 7 months OR at least includes a better game than Motorstorm....

Yep, I checked too. Oh Well, I guess there goes that deal for me. Even if I get the card now which I've been waiting for like 2 weeks now I won't get the PS3. Not tempting enough for me to just get a $100 credit. They definitely changed it to $100 instead of the $150 credit!

OOO that completely breaks the deal for me too!
Here's to some good deals in the coming months. Cause hell if I'm going to pay ~550 to play MGS4!
If you first applied for the card during the $150 promotion you should definitely call them up and argue for it. Worth a shot, anyway, and I would not be surprised if they give it to you rather than lose your business ...

I agree. When I ordered my PS3 last month, I also printed out the $150 promotion details from the Sony website just in case the promotion ends or changes while I'm waiting for my credit to post.

I am rather confused as to what a "Qualifying Purchase" is. Does this sony card promotion include the purchases of games and psp's or just very expensive hardware?

I just got my SonyStyle bill and the $150 credit was on the very first statement...so it won't take the 8-10 weeks I believe the sign-up offer said it would!

Looks like the deal is completely dead now. SonyStyle.com took the 60 GB off their site. And as mentioned before, the credit card deal is only $100 off now.
I applied last week right before the discount change, and got my credit card in mail today. Ran down the the local SonyStyle store where they still have some 60 GB in stock. Hopefully won't have problems getting the $150 credited back...

If you get the card, remember that you get points with it as well. You might have enough to get a free controller.

You can register your card at chase.com, and you can check your bills/activities that way.

Well, IF I got approved, I guess theres no point in getting a PS3 now. Seeing as you guys have said that the 60gig is off their store. And I'm sure that the credit only applies if you bougt it from the SonyStyle store too
