This Wednesday, we are getting "Track and Field"
Microsoft has just announced their August XBLA lineup and everything that's coming soon after. As we say below, this Wednesday we get Konami's original Track and Field, but in the coming weeks...wait for it...HEXIC 2!! AT LONG LAST!! (And Ubisoft's War World.)
Most of all, we're looking forward to Streets of Rage 2 later this summer, along with the stomach-knotting feeling of wasting our childhood that accompanies replaying old sidescrolling beat 'em ups. Hit the jump for a full list of upcoming titles and a boatload of synonyms for "hot." We're talking more than a used car commercial in the middle of a legitimate heat wave.
Hot August games also releasing this month:
· "Ecco the Dolphin" (Sega) Cool off with this fun, whimsical update of the classic undersea exploration game featuring everyone's favorite bottlenose dolphin, Ecco!
· "Hexic 2" (Carbonated Games) The highly anticipated sequel to the popular puzzle game "Hexic HD" will have gamers racing to solve brand new challenges, including an all new two player Battle mode.
· "War World" (Ubisoft) A pure adrenaline rush, War World features powerful armored mechanoids battling head-to-head in all-out savage single and multiplayer battles that combine action and strategy.
Sizzling summer launches hitting in the coming weeks:
· "Geon: Emotions" (Eidos) Engage in the unique sport of Geon, where you must master a diverse range of emotions to best your opponents.
· "Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords" (D3Publisher of America, Inc.) Addictive and easy-to-learn, this game integrates story and character progression elements found in RPGs delivering a brand new type of game that pushes the puzzle genre to a whole new level.
· "Space Giraffe" (Llamasoft) Created by genre-defining game designer Jeff Minter, "Space Giraffe" is a psychedelic shooter that spans 100 levels, all set against vivid, pulsating backgrounds that synchronize with any custom music selection.
· "Streets of Rage 2" (Sega) One of the most popular side-scrolling beat 'em ups of the 90's gets the Xbox LIVE Arcade treatment, complete with enhanced graphics, sound, Achievements and multiplayer modes.
· "Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix" (Capcom) This game combines addictive puzzle action with favorite Capcom fighting characters including Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and Morrigan.

Yes very much Puzzle Quest FTW!! I haven't read much on it, but I'm hoping that it'll have XBL multiplayer...::hopes::!! I loved Puzzle Quest on the DS.. can't wait to play it on my XBLA.
I'm actually pretty stoked for Hexic 2..with the sound of 2 player battles it just sounds really fun :)
Oh and SoR2 FTW FTW

It does seem like a decent selection. I wonder if - given the way it's worded - these are all going to be one-per-week releases coming to XBLA in sequence.

Those better be the first releases in September.

How could you not see the appeal? Simple arcade games for low prices. Most with HD updates. That's the appeal.

Thats like saying the dollar store is the best place for deals. We all know that these games have low replay value, often not worth the 5 (sometimes 10) dollars worth of points spent on them.

I wonder what the control scheme will be like for Track and Field, the good old furiously hitting two buttons as fast as you can tactic isn't really suited to the X360 controller. Maybe they'll use the left and right triggers for the running.

There's alot of damn good releases coming out this summer.
Track and field is not one of them ;)
Puzzle Quest (better be cheap, though), Space Giraffe, Puzzle Fighter, maybe War World. Good stuff.

Generally, the only ones that have low replay value are the 80's-early 90's arcade ports. They offer a lot more than that.

Worms gets more play with me and my friends than anything else and Catan is my online game of choice.

I've had the opposite experience. I haven't felt compelled to keep any retail game, but I can replay the arcade games any time. out of this list alone, Puzzle Fighter, Hexic, and Puzzle Quest are the epitome of addicting games.
I think you're just expecting retail level quality out of these games. not every game is GoW or Halo.

Looks interesting.
Puzzle Quest, Hexic 2, and Space Giraffe look like some good things to use some of those half-priced points on ;). Fighting games go right into the /ignore file in my mind. I know they are the hotness here on CAG but basically I stopped playing arcade and video games when they all became fighters in the late 80's/early 90's. Didn't get back in until 2003, that's how much they turned me off ;).
Anyway, will keep an eye on War World as well - that could be an awesome multiplayer game or it could suck big time...

Puzzle Fighter is a puzzle game using S.D. capcom fighter characters. you might be confusing it with Gem Fighter, the fighting game that uses Puzzle Fighter characters.
If you like Puzzle Quest and Hexic, I have no doubt that you'll like Puzzle Fighter :)

Hmmm... Well, I'll admit I know nothing about it. Good thing there's demos of these games ;). I'll give it a shot when it gets released to see what it's all about.

Low replay value? The XBLA games have some of the highest replay value anywhere! There's classic arcade games that people have been playing since the early 80's. There's classic board games that people have been playing for hundreds or even thousands of years. There's "new" board games that have been popular for years already, and finally there are new games that were designed with the same "pick up and play" mentality that spawned other classics.

I don't want to bring this thread down to the dumps, but here's why I'm going to be disappointed in XBLA until one of these 2 games come out:
- The Simpsons Arcade Game
- X-Men Arcade Game (The 6-player version, not 4-player or 2-player, but 6-player)

 I was JUST about to post the same thing. I think this is a case where we can only hope it is as low as 800 points. I could see them going 1200 easily on this, though, if not more. I'm really really really hoping for 800.

There's no way Puzzle Quest goes for anything less than 1600 points. I'm guessing 2000 points ($25).

You think they can get away with that? I'd guess 1600 at most. But who knows, I'm new to this. I'd have a hard time shelling out $25 in real money for it - thank goodness for that CC sale on points! Even with that sale, I'd be hard pressed to spend 2000 points on it.

Anyone know if Hexic 2 will be at 400 points? I hope so...

I think you're on to something :-k
track and field is made by Konami. and I hear Kojima once said "hello" to the developer who worked on the NES port of Track and Field, and that developer later bought a laptop that had Windows on it, thus MGS4 is coming to the 360. :)

Well, I played Hexic about 4 times, though it was nothing special, since I have played many games just like that on thousands of sites on the computer, so I was burned out on that game before I ever played Hexic. I got Uno for free, played it twice and never played it again. When I play Uno in real life, I usually play with a different set of rules, so I found myself bored when playing online.
It seems to me that some of these games are best to just be played as demos and then deleted. But if you enjoy 'em, more power to ya. I get all my MS poitns for free, and I still never buy the arcade games because I know when some new DLC coems out for games like Halo and GOW, im going to enjoy the DLC a lot more than most arcade games.

1600 points would still be reasonable for Puzzle Quest. I don't think I'd double-dip on it for more than 800, still play the hell out of it on my DS. But for being the same game with added multiplayer/leaderboards, it would be a reasonable price.

I am pretty interested in Ecco and War Worlds. I have never played Ecco, and it seems like a pretty fun game to just play. Then War Worlds seems interesting, as it seems like it could be a good mech game. I am cautiously interested in Space Giraffe, as it seems like a little fun, but way to flashy, of course I guess it matters how it plays. I never heard of Streets of Rage, but with everyone so interested in it, I am defininently interested now.

agreed that 800 is pretty steep. I think I'll hold off until after Xmas so I can use my CC points on all the other good stuff. Plus Puzzle Fighter will probably be out next week...and there just isn't room in my life for 2 highly addictive puzzle games at the moment.
