Ugly as hell, but I may preorder to get the new heatsink or just to sell (at an inflated price) to some poor mother with a spoiled child at Christmas. 'Tis the season.

I wonder what EB would offer on a trade in of a current Premium
if that thing ends up retaining value like the halo edition xbox 1 it will be worth getting.

Seriously. Fuck me. This sucks balls being a huge Halo fan. I've got the Xbox 1 Halo box already..and just tons of other Halo shit. I have goddamn official balloons that have the Halo 2 logo on them. BALLOONS.
I'm still on the fence about this. $170 for the Halo box was reasonable...but $400?
Nice find Zew, I was thinking it would be $399.99. Gah, a $50 premium for suckers like me who are into the "LE/CE" shit. Oh well, if it has the 65nm chip, I won't feel so bad trading up for one.
Now to see if GS is starting up pre-orders this week...

It's not bad if you don't consider the recent $50 price drop. You're getting a limited edition Premium for the Premium price. Plus HDMI and gamerpics/themes.
My bet is you're buying one. ;)

How much do used premiums go for these days anyways :) Heh.
It's also kind of lame it didn't come with a transfer kit. Damn that HD...why would it have to be themed too?!
$400 console + $130 Legendary Edition....My wallet just caught fire. If I get one, it's going to be impulse. Just like my Premium 360 that I bought at 4 AM at a Wal-Mart.

Plus the play and charge kit. This makes it steal considering they probably could've priced this at the elite price and it would've still sold out.

Hmm...I was under the impression that this was going to be $499.xx or $500. I mean, if you take into consideration of the extras like the play and charge kit, the HDMI port, and that it is going to have a limited production.
At $399.xx, I suppose this is going to be a good deal overall for many. :)

You thought it would be 500? Yeesh.
I suppose 400 isn't that bad. You do get a P/C kit, HDMI port, more reliable system, and something that is limited edition.
I'm very tempted to replace my premium with it, but ehhhhh.

Not a bad price, but it's really silly that they couldn't include the game.
Are they money hungry, or perhaps they don't think Halo nuts (the kind who would buy this console) would want any version other than the supremo 'legendary" edition (and thus MS is considering themselves benevolent by not forcing said Halo nuts to buy 2 copies of the game)?

In my opinion, with 3 different versions of Halo 3 they really couldn't. They would have most likely put in the normal version, but then what if you were already buying the Legendary or Collector's Edition?
Or the Legendary AND Collector's Edition (no comment).
Yeah, I have to get this now, too.

PenguinMaster
08-07-2007, 09:17 AM
It sounds like a perfectly reasonable price. Considering a play and charge kit is $10-$15 (and I consider it an essential accessory) you're basically getting an HDMI port and a limited edition console for $35-$40 extra. If you really want to use HDMI that's a fair price.
Not a bad price, but it's really silly that they couldn't include the game.
Considering they're selling the normal Halo 3 edition for $60 and this console is only $50 more than a premium with extras included, they'd definitely increase the price of this console if they included Halo 3.

I couldnt get rid of till the 360 came out since it was also my primary X-Box at the time. I am hoping with the release of Halo 3 at the end of September we will see a spike in the value of these things again.

Yes. I believe they were manufactured during July so it shouldn't be too much longer before they are on the shelves.
What annoys me about this deal is if it were the normal premium I'd be all over it - I want an HDMI port, I don't need the 120 GB drive, but....I don't want the goddamn spinach-flavored diarrhea coloring.

2 of my buddies got the Mountain Dew Xbox back in high school. That thing was about 4x uglier than this one.
For those of you still in high school. If your school has a recycling program like mine did, go around the classrooms and collect all the bottle caps you can, and ask all your friends to save caps for you. This worked out well because our school has a license with Pepsi and there were like 3 or 4 vending machines in the school.

Gamestop is taking pre-orders tomorrow. $50 down. I'm doing 2 one for me and one for my cousin.
Thanks, I'll be going down there tomorrow for pre-order.
Also, I think the HDMI is still going to be stuck at 1.2 like the current Elites. Ashame if that holds true, as future-proofing would be that much more of a bonus...

you should call customer service, I'm pretty such their manager would be pleased to know they turned down a res, if not then the whole store could be filled with fanboys
Really LP? That sucks. I went right in on Thursday when my local store opened, asked the guy about the pre-order, and he found it and signed me up straight away. He even remembered me a few days later when I came in to trade a couple more Wii games that were collecting dust. The clerk said that after I came in, a bunch more people pre-ordered the console behind me.
I'll be in again this week if they open up the PSP Slim pre-orders as well. I'm not a fan of GS by any means, but the one closest to me has treated me very well for the most part.

The more I think about this console, the more it's a blatant opportunity to take advantage of the Halo brand. (I know this is exactly why this console was made) But seriously? $400. 20 gig HD, Halo branded skin, controllers, headset, play 'n charge kit.
No wireless headset. No 120 gig HD. No 65nm chips. No Halo 3 included. ONE free theme and ONE free gamerpic set. Seriously. MS put little to no effort in this package.

With all the information going around about the 65 nm chips, it's hard to keep track of which ones do have it and which ones don't have it. Has there been any information to prove or disprove that the Halo edition has the chip in it?
I don't recall seeing any final tech specs on the Halo 3 console. I personally am just going on blind faith that it will have the Falcon. At minimum, it should have the new heatsinks and quieter drive, though.
And I'm sorry to say that I am a little disappointed in the special edition gamerpics and theme myself. Not that I'm spending the extra $50 just for that, though...

Until info is leaked (which in this case it doesn't seem to be, coming from someone at M$ that would know, or the factory...), assume it'll have the 90nm chip unless there is word of 65nm (falcon) chips present in Premium or Elite consoles.

If I borrow a memory card from a friend and copy all the stuff that can't be replaced (savegames, gamer profiles, and such) will I be able to load all that stuff onto the new hard drive and 360 and download all my old arcade games again without too much trouble or will I run into some sort of problem?

Just ordered one for PU at my local CC. Hoping to just walk in, present the paperwork, and walk out. Painless.
By the way, when I ordered it they included for free a $19.99 gamers savings club membership. Also hoping they'll accept the $40.00 of coupon. We'll see.
Mine is paid for. Hopefully my GS got it yesterday so I can pick it up later today (whoa it's past 1am already--better hit the hay soon).
I hope it has the Falcon chip, but I'm not gonna hold my breath on that one. As long as it's got the upgraded heat sink and quieter drive, I'll probably be ok with it. We'll see...

I ended up picking one up this morning. On the Halo edition there is no mention of Zephyr/Falcon on the sticker that would say Zephyr on the new Premiums. I will just keep it sealed in the meantime and play my MS refurb until any confirmation is made. In any case, I got a free CC Gamers Savings Club out of it, and $6 off a Halo 3 controller because of it (wanted a 4th controller, so what the hell), so all is good if I end up just keeping it for collection purposes if it does not have the Falcon, as given the previous Halo console, I am sure it will at least retain its value, if not gain any.
EDIT: I saw this right after I posted, it looks like there may possibly be hope for improved hardware in the Halo edition, as described in post #69 on this forum thread:
http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t=546641&page=5
Basically, the poster's impressions are that his console runs cooler than both the Premium and the Elite and the disc drive is a little quieter (poster states his disc drive does not make a "swoosh" sound when inserting discs).

*Went ahead and got from CC, along with a Covenent Controller (seems like these are selling out everywhere)

Do you know what drive it comes with (i.e. BenqQ or Hitachi?) and does it include any special XBL subscriptions (or is it just the standard 1 free month of GOLD)?
Also, can you confirm that it DOES NOT INCLUDE an HDMI cable? Thanks for any response. Enjoy the system.

ok my drive is round, so it's benq, i am sure and it's just one month of gold, one thing that i c is that it has a power and charge kit included, and no hdmi cable.
Can you check the back of the unit to see if the model information is printed somewhere there? I won't be picking mine up until the kiddies go down for a nap after lunch, so if anyone can post sooner, that'd be appreciated.

the HDD is 100G smaller, and although it has an HDMI port, there is no cable included.... i know they are cheaper for you guys in the states but up here in canada the cheapest 3 foot HDMI cable i have seen was a 4 foot for 70 bucks and going up to over 300 bucks for a 12 foot monster.......
so for me its the elite as an upgrade. especially because canada gets the video marketplace next month.

Need some sort of confirmation on the 65nm chip or no buy.
Well, until someone either does a tear down or leaks "insider" info, we won't really know. There's no indication what chipset is being used anywhere on the console, box, or packaging that I could find.
Which in and of itself kind of suggests it's a Zephyr w/HDMI to me, but again, there's nothing to prove or disprove that unless I open that bad boy up (which I'm not going to do).
S'ok w/me. It's actually pretty nice, and I like having the HDMI out option. I may post more impressions once the wife relinquishes control of the TV hehe.
Edit: Ok, I fired it up and the yes, the drive is a lot quieter than the one I originally had (manuf date 7/06). The fans still spin up pretty good, but to be fair, it's 87 degrees where I live right now. I've migrated most of my stuff over from the old console, so I'm just playing catch up with downloads now.

IMHO the connector box with the optical is kinda pointless for most
1. most won't use hdmi (no real image benefit if your tv's inputs are up to standard)
2. users of the hdmi have a tv with an optical or coaxial output (go check its probably there)
3. They have a reciever with hdmi.
The elite is meant to cater to those fringe customers with tv's that have no digital audio out or recievers with hdmi in.

When you factor in the cost of the HDMI cable ($45 at the lowest), it's more cost friendly to get the elite.
Hell if you get the elite over the Halo Xbox, you're only paying $50 more and you're getting the HDMI cable, 120gb hard-drive included.
My friend's TV has optical out so he can use HDMI in and then use optical out to his receiver.

I believe the component cable it comes with has an optical port on it. It's only an issue if you want to use HDMI and optical, as then you need the $50 cable/adapter thing.

09-17-2007, 02:13 PM
Yes, from what I understand you cannot plug in both the HDMI cable and the component dongle as they overlap. This SHOULD be advertised more....as a LOT of people use optical. I have a decent receiver, but it does not have HDMI. I would get the ELITE though if I ever upgraded.....that would be the ideal situation since it includes the HDMI dongle.
dmaul1114
09-17-2007, 03:21 PM
Of course you can just use component which is included. HDMI doesn't offer much benefit anyway.
Or check to see if your TV has an optical out, as that should pass the audio from HDMI off to the reciever.

Good catch. Kind of what I expected. Not sure how much longer the Zephyr/HDMI combo will last in comparison with the previous chipset, but then again, I had my first console (manuf date: 7/06) for over a year with no problems in a generally warm climate.

alright i found a way around it, i am using a 24 inch samsung monitor for gaming and it doesn't have speakers, i bought the halo edition 360, thinking it would come with that audio thing also, but i realized it wasn't there, so i used my hdmi to dvi-d cable that i got from monoprice and hooked up the 360 for video, but there's still no audio, and i tried to see if the component video/audio cable that came with the 360 will fit with the 360 but it just won't it just too damn fat. I went out to gamestop and bought one of those unversal compatable things that lets u connect a 360/gamecube/ps2, thats the only thing they had, and it was like 10 bucks. I brought it home and had to struggle to fit the thing in the back with the hdmi, but i did, it's kinda bented a little but oh well it works, i got sound now through my z2300 logitech speakers. You need one of these:
http://www.ebgames.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=802758
Includes Optical/RCA Audio Adapter. The Audio Adapter allows HDMI video to be routed to the HDTV with the audio routed SEPERATLY to the home speaker system
Assured quality from the Xbox brand
These allow HDMI video and have an output for the Optical Cable so that you can get sound through your receiver.

OK I bought the Halo 3 xbox and I was under the impression the exclusive theme and pic were on the Hard Drive, in actuality they are available via a points code for Xbox live. Now to try and figure out the value of these codes so I can Ebay them since I don't care about the theme or exclusive pictures but I know someone will, any ideas ? Also I can't figure out why people haven't brought this up yet ?
I did think about it, but you figure a bunch of more motivated folks are already doing the same thing. I'm too lazy to search, but I'm sure the auctions have already gone up and maybe even ended by now. I have no idea what people would be willing to pay for those codes, but I can't imagine very much--they're not mind-boggling IMO and you can get free Halo dlc on Live right now via Best Buy.

So I was getting my new Halo 360 setup (I decided to stick with it and sell my premium), and I had my gamer profile and game saves on a 64 MB memory unit ready to go to transfer to the new hard drive. During the setup, it took my gamer profile that was on the memory unit and redownloaded all of my Xbox Live Arcade games automatically! I definitely was not looking forward to transferring all those over, so definitely a nice little feature.
EDIT: Some other fun facts about the hard drive included with the Halo edition 360. It comes preloaded with demos for "Call of Duty 3 St. Lo.," Fuzion Frenzy 2, Lego Star Wars II, Lost Planet Online, and Madden 07 (why they would include a demo for 07 and not 08 is beyond me). Videos that it comes preloaded with are "Accessories," Bringing It Home Halo Wars Trailer, E3 06: Fable 2 Trailer, "Forza Motorsport," "Forza Motorsport 2 Customization," Halo 3 Announcement, Halo 3 1st TV Commercial, Halo 3 ViDoc "Et Tu, Brute?," "Wireless Accessories," and "Wireless World." It comes with no preloaded music.

Would you mind sharing your exact procedure? I might be in the same situation in a few days, so a heads-up preview would be great. Thanks!

It was just as simple as it sounds, just make sure to move your gamer profile over to a memory unit before you start the setup on the other console. Then, insert the memory unit in the other console before you turn it on. Then, go through the setup, and eventually it will tell you that gamer profiles already exist on this console (instead of having you go through the whole process to create one or to recover one). After you select your profile, it will say that an update is available over Xbox Live. The download was fairly large, but when it was finished, I had noticed all of my XBLA games were now on the new hard drive. However, it did not download any additional content for those games, you have to transfer those over yourself (Uno decks for example, I had to move those over myself).
Another thing I noticed about the new hardware, which may or may not be of any significance, is while registering the console to use on the campus network, I noticed the first half of the MAC address was slightly different (the half used to identify a manufacturer, etc). So, there may be a new type of NIC inside there.
EDIT: As an update to my postings for tonight, after I actually went to look at those arcade games, they are actually only just the trial versions. They must have been preloaded onto the hard drive. Oh well, just means I'll have to redownload a bunch of them over again. I guess I originally should have taken a closer look and seen that not all of the games I originally had were there. At least for the trial versions that are already on the hard drive all I have to do is select "unlock full game" again, it knows that I owned it before and doesn't charge for it. All I can say is hooray for the download history list in account management, made it very nice to download my TV shows again too.

I was thinking about picking up one of these, but I'm worried that the transfer process will be quite a hassle. For example, is there an actual solution to the DRM issue of having to be signed on to Live to access your downloaded content (without having to call MS)? I'm connected to Live most of the time but do bring my 360 around to where there might not be a connection. I found the following link (about the Elite but should be the same) but don't know how reliable it is:
http://vgstrategies.about.com/od/xbox360faqs/a/Xbox360EliteTra.htm
Also, I have a smaller lcd monitor in my room that I occasionally use. It doesn't have HDMI, will I be able to hook this console up and use surround sound speakers, or will the lack of an optical input be an issue?

The 360 Elite has the same stuff already pre-loaded on the HD.

Not mine I left mine on for 3 straight hours and when I came home I expected my house to be burnt down but I could barely hear the thing. I also live in Florida and keep my console in a cabinet under my TV so basically there is no ventilation. On a side note though I have left my PS3 on for the last 3 days and it is literally making no noise at all.

Is there that much of a difference between HDMI and component hd. MY mom is getting a 57' dlp(I think. Dont know details yet) and id like to know

It can matter if you plan on using 1080p on the TV. Most TVs will only accept 1080p over HDMI, not component.

HDMI is a little sharper and you don't have to deal with a 5 pronged cable-- audio and video goes through that one cable. It's also necessary if you are doing 1080p.
If you do decide to get one, no need to spend $30, when you can have one for $4.79: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10240&cs_id=1024004&p_id=2412&seq=1&format=2
unless you are using an optical cable for audio, there's no reason to pay $30 for an hdmi cable-- they're all the same.

Not sure about their HDMI cables, but I'm using a set of component cables from their website for my Wii and it looks fantastic. The cables are pretty much identical, all your paying for is the name on the box/cables when you go with Microsoft, Monster, etc.

Just keep your HD and use it on the new halo xbox.

Memory card.
You can move (smaller) game data via a MEMORY CARD unit.
If your merely trying to move your achievements and XBL account settings you can do so via the "RECOVER GAMERTAG" option. You will not lose any gamerpoints so don't worry it's a safe route.
Obviously if you want to move loads of data that won't fit on the mem card - then going the route you originally suggested would be your best bet.
Sticking the old HDD onto the new (green) xbox 360 will obviously look like butt - so don't go that route unless you don't care. :)

My guess is Microsoft will put out an option to order a transfer kit with software specifically for transferring between two 20 gig hard drives, and put up a request form similar to what they have for the elite.

The memory card wont work on the arcade games and thats my biggest concern. I have a feeling that the elite transfer kit wont work either since its probably desgined for the elite to 20gb not 20 to 20 like stated above. I am just suprised there arent more people with this issue.

the 65nms should be hitting the U.S. a week or 2 into Oct of Dean Takahashi is right.
the HALO 3 editions do have a new type of heatsink w/ heatpipes though. so it should be more safe from the RRoD than older 360s. the drive is also quieter.
and yes EA has said publicly that they are focusing on the 360. so all EA games should run better on the 360

Sorry to get off-topic but I had to respond to this.
Actually on a recent Game Head, Peter Moore said starting with next seasons games they will be equal. I don't remember the exact quote but Geoff keighley was teasing him about MS and if he had any favortism.

I picked up a 512MB MU. Between the MU and the 'download history', it was quite easy and fast to get what I needed onto my new Halo box.
The white wireless adapter is no bigger. I do wish there was a black chatpad, the white doesn't look so hot on the Halo themed controllers.
