View Full Version : Question about upcoming Tax Free Weekend

The weekend of August 17-19, Texas is having a tax free weekend. (And I assume other states are as well.) At first I thought it was only for school supplies and clothes, but having read a Best Buy flier it looks like select items (TV's $399 and up, DVD players, etc...) will also be tax free.
Question, would a PS3 constitute a DVD player? I only ask because I have quite a few reward certificates I'd like to use before they expire. And with no tax, I figure it would be a win-win.

Funny thing is I read something similar to this but the guy who created the thread last time was from Massachusetts...hopefully this comes to Ohio

TN was only school supplies and PCs up to 1500, and to a evil corporate entity and da guvment they're only looking at PS3s as game systems.

It's already been said, but this is the wrong forum.
Anyway, to answer your question: Unless this Tax-free weekend is different than all the other ones, the only things that are taz-free are clothing items less than $100. No video game systems, no games, no TVs, ect.
Now, where did you see that Best Buy is having TVs tax-free?

In MA it's this current weekend (yesterday now and today), and it's on everything that's less than $1K or something like that. Pretty damn good if you're in the market for a game console. Doesn't matter too much to me though, since I buy almost everything in New Hampshire anyways <_<
These are the states that have a tax free weekend:
• Alabama • New Mexico • Connecticut • North Carolina
• Florida • South Carolina • Georgia • Tennessee
• Iowa • Texas • Maryland • Virginia • Missouri
• Washington, D.C.
It depends on the state and how it's law is written. In Virginia, retailers have the option of paying for taxes themselves for items that aren't regularly exempt (at least last year they did). If this is what's happening where you live, then it's up to Best Buy to decide what counts as a DVD player or not.

in TN it was only on school supplies. and even then they weren't even generous as to what was school supplies. a printer didn't count! so basically we could get tape and scissors tax free. i saved a whopping $0.57
