Linked from Kotaku, this is the first real concrete evidence I have seen from a developer actually admitting that Blu-ray allows developers to offer more and that they are limited by DVD.

I'm not necessarily calling out REPOST, I'm just pointing out it's already there, and I figure you think you might shrivel up and die were you to actually go into the 360 forums, which is why you didn't see it.

I thought this was more of General Industry News than just Xbox 360, why I posted it here. And no I Didn't see the 360 post, because I don't own a 360 and therefore have no reason to go into the forum.

Whoa whoa whoa, you're telling me you can fit more data on a Blu-Ray disc?
Why didn't I get the memo?

Any news about the PC verison and DVD? Or would they consider it not an issue since installing things from several discs is so common?

Yet, you're worried about the DVD size limitations of the system you don't own. That's awfully thoughtful of you.

If it's online multiplayer maps...couldn't they just put the extra maps on Live?

It wouldn't be a problem on the PC since you can install stuff, and if need be, use 2 or more DVDs to install the game. There's no disc-switching involved.

That is pretty much what Mark Rein hinted at.

I continue to be disappointed that folks on the internet treat any positive thing we say about one platform as some sort of critique of another platform. We're a multi-platform company folks please come to grips with that. We like the PC. We like the 360. We like the PS3. We like the Macintosh. We like Linux. We will deliver UT3 for all of these platforms and it will rock on every one.
The simple facts state that the optical disc on the PS3 holds more data than the optical disc on the 360. If we exceed size of the 360s optical disc then we'll have to find alternative ways to get the content to 360 users such as making it downloadable. Adding a second DVD to a game like UT3 would be a challenge because when playing online you might not know exactly what map you're going to be playing next and we have to be able to accommodate users of the core system. So does that mean the disc on the 360 might have a map or two less? Possibly although it is too early to tell for sure. People love Unreal Tournament because we always ship it with tons of great content but that also makes it a bit of a disc hog - in a good way http://utforums.epicgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
I don't know the exact numbers but I suspect the version of Gears of War that most of our customers play today on their 360s, when you combine the downloadable content with the content on the disc, is larger than what we could fit on the 360's optical disc alone. So clearly there are perfectly good strategies to cope with this situation. We're all very used to downloading extra content for console games and with UT3 there will be lots of it for all supported platforms. In fact the cool thing about our engine is that when you make content for one platform it can run on all of them. If history is any indication, the vast majority of UT3 content won't even come from Epic - it will come from some very brilliant end users with lots of cool and innovative ideas.

Yeh, you must be glad that the few good games that you will get will have the maps that the 360 users will get from the marketplace. Anyway, who needs more maps at release? PS3 owners. Why? They have nothing else to play! While us 360 players will have many others games to pour our hours into that we won't even be bothered. It will actualy free up some time for our others games.
I know you have a 360, but im pointing this post out to all the PS3 fans.

This had better not come to pass. They had best put a second dvd in that 360 case or include a code for free downloading of the missing maps. And if not any of that then it better be cheaper than the ps3 version at least.

And this is why I think that soon more and more games will start using the hard drives for things like maps at first. You know, a game like UT might have a map disc that install some maps and the other disc is for playing.

By the time (and around the time) UT3 is released there will be quite a few PS3 games I (and other PS3 owners I'm sure) be playing, so you're wrong. There a lot of great games coming this Fall/Winter for PS3 besides UT3.
Thanks for trying!
On another note, if any maps are left out of the 360 version hope you guys get them for free.

It would be cool if they included a 2nd disc that transfers the maps to the HDD, but the core system is ruining that one. I wonder how many Core owners (like myself) DON'T have hard drives? I got stuck with a Core at launch and the first thing I did was buy an HDD. I'm curious how many Cores out there are HDD-less.

I'm sure Beautiful Katamari isn't the same damn thing as every other Katamari game, so enjoy!
And Bioshock is also on the PC, so should I choose to play it I can.

My PC is pretty much around the minimum requirements for Bioshock so it's not a big deal :-P

They'll just put the left-out maps on XBL and charge us for $20 or $30 in DLC.
As soon as the HD-DVD add-on reaches $100, they should finally just give in and use it for game playback (and include it built-in in future Xbox 360 revisions).
