Interesting. The link is for purchasing the Toshiba HD-DVD players, but includes Blu-Rays. I'd try this if I didn't already have a PS3 from the first promo w/RE:A and Sony Bluetooth remote.

Offhand, it seems like a loophole of some kind, so I'd jump in before the deal disappears.

Oh man I already purchased a PS3 from Circuit City last month. Hmm. I wonder if it's worth it to return it now. I'm not too late to return it and I have everything.

I've already created some user accounts on my PS3. I guess I can just delete everything all accounts right?

You are right!

Since I have the 10% extra off HD movies promo, the total cost of an 80GB Motorstorm bundle with X-Men The Last Stand, Ice Age, and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen would cost $563.65. Shit and double shit. I'm almost a little sad I jumped on the first Amazon bundle promo now.

I'll say again that this deal is worth jumping on now if you're a movie fan.

Edit: I mean, jump in fast, because I don't believe the promo is going to last the way it is now.

After investigating the forums, I don't believe this to be true. The confusion lies with Sony producing and selling Emotion Engine-less PS3s in April 2007 (actually March 2007), but strictly for the European and Korean market. The North American PS3 supplies of 60gbs still have the EE chip built-in and there's no official statement that says otherwise.

Ridiculously hot deal --- I have an XBox 360 and actually just recently got the HD-DVD addon. This pushed me over the edge --- I will sell the 5 extra Blu-rays that I get, which will drop the PS3 cost to ~$378-390, and will keep three of my favorite movies in Blu-ray format:

Casino Royale
The Departed
Rocky Balboa

The extra $20 off loophole was a key in this deal. I wonder how long it will take Amazon to fill in that hole.

A few weeks ago, I picked up a PS3 due to similar thinking (and mentally deducting the cash proceeds I would get when I would then sell of my PS2) and I now regret that. While I've upgraded the firmware, I just don't think the PS2 games look as good on the PS3 as they do with my slim ps2...Then factoring in the lack of rumble, the fact that my guitar hero guitars don't work on the PS3 and its nice to have system that you can stick in a backpack or move to another TV, if only to use as a DVD player, with no effort, I've decided to keep my PS2 and just sell off the PS3 instead. I'll buy another PS3 in a two years or so, when hopefully there might be more than a handful of games worth playing on it. The PS3 is a nice piece of hardware but there is still isn't much to play on it.

question: where does the -27.95 (bringing the ps3 total to $472) come from?

For some reason Amazon deducts the price of ALL the movies and also deducts the lowest price movie from your overall total. For me it was 21.95, so it depends on what movies you get.

question: where does the -27.95 (bringing the ps3 total to $472) come from?

The reason it works is because Amazon is applying 2 promotions.

- Great 3 free movies with purchase of hardware (~$84)
- Buy 2 Get 1 Free for Blu Ray (~$28)

I almost bit on this, but I still just can't justify buying a PS3 just to be a blu-ray player. I gotta have some games before I buy it, no matter how much I like technology.

You can't find the list anymore. But just add 3 blu-rays to your cart the discount thing still works.

This is really tempting me. I would get the 60 gb version and the following bluerays: 300, Stranger than Fiction, The Transporter, Transporter 2, Resident Evil 2, Corpse Bride, Invincible, and the Italian Job. Plus I can add the Bioshock guide and Metroid Prime 2 guide without shipping. All of this for under $500 (only $497) and no tax or shipping...plus there are actually some games for PS3 coming out: Ratchet and Clank, Lair, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Folklore which I want plus I already want Resistance and Ninja Gaiden...decisions decisions.

Do everything the OP says and add 3 movies from the correct selection to the list.

There are currently 2 promos running with the purchase of a PS3 on Amazon:
-3 free BluRay
-B2G1
They are stacking, so when you add three movies, it makes them all free, but then also under the B2G1 takes the price of the lowest movie gets taken off.

EE chipped systems have a very high compatibility rate, around 98-99%. Non EE chipped systems hover around the 70 percents or so. It will have emulation updates, but like the X360, it will never be as high in compatibility rates as the EE chipped systems. Additionally, Sony, and Microsoft, will eventually re-direct backwards compatbility resources towards products that actually generate money.

I got Circuit City to honor a 10% off coupon with my PS3, as well as a free Gamer's Club pack thing which is actually pretty good since it gives you 10% off games, accessories and guides for one whole year. Although, three Blu-Ray movies isn't bad.

Once the 60Gigs are out of stores they will not be replenished by Sony.

I have my PS3 back at Sony being repaired (or they will send me a refurb). This is the second time I had a problem with my PS3 and when I asked (begged) for a new 60Gb the customer service person stated that they are no longer available new direct from Sony for replacement. I read similar thoughts elsewhere and think the EE is gone once stock leaves stores.

Yup. Last I checked, even Sony's online store listed the 60GB model as "out of stock." Sony has already stated they will no longer produce the 60GB to cut costs, and all the units that are at retail are all that is left. Europe never had EE-chipped systems to begin with so it's not a surprise.

I wonder if EE and non-EE systems have differences in terms of visual quality of PS2 games.

And even better, I bought an HDTV from Amazon last November, and got a year of 10% off all HD DVD and Blu-ray discs, which I completely forgot until I went to do this deal and got 10% off the price of the 3 discs. So I ended up with an additional $7.50 or so off my price, bringing my PS3 down to $468

Yep Yep. This has been on slickdeals a day or two now. I picked up the ps3 with The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, The Departed, and Blood Diamond. The final price was $480, I believe, minus a remaining $150 from my Iowa Rewards card. I wish I had received my $250 amazon gc from amex by now--that would have made this even sexier. I think I should have picked this up when they were giving away a remote or controller a few weeks back. Well, I'm getting this mainly for the blu-ray, for now at least.

For those of you that are confused, or don't know what is going to happen with the PS3 emotion chip, there is no confusion. The earlier PS3s contain the emotion chip. After a price drop on those, it was revealed that they were being phased out for a new PS3 variant, with more hard drive space, and crucially, without the Emotion chip.

So the Emotion Chip is being phased out. Get the old PS3s while you can. You can always swap the HDD over when your warranty runs out.

The reason it works is because Amazon is applying 2 promotions.

It looks like they fixed the promo slightly.

You can still get a PS3 + 3 free BluRay movies, but you don't get the extra discount anymore, because the `buy 2 get 1 free' deal was stacking with it.

Still, $499 for a 60GB PS3, with 3 (+5 by rebate) is still a good deal.

One slight observation regarding this deal. I have the BN promotion that gives me an additional 10% off Blu-Ray / HD-DVD (and this did stack as well), but when I went to change the option to the free shipping (to save about 7-8 bucks more), the -23 dollar discount was removed. I guess you can only stack three offers in Amazon's system or something. Anyways, I bit, but just wanted to find out if anyone was able to get four discounts stacked on their order...to see if I had done something wrong. Oh well, I'll just get it a little quicker now :)

phew. good thing i ordered the other day. i really had to think about it.

i just got an hdtv and a htib so i definitely wanna test it out on something. i heard blockbuster is gonna only have blu rays to rent, so i went with that.

also...i was gonna see how cheap i could get a 20gb ps3 for, but i heard there was no built in wi-fi. and with the 80gbs not having the emotion engine...that put me in a happy place with the 60gb :)

there are 3 games that i want. resistance fom, ninja gaiden sigma, and heavenly sword (dunno if that's out yet) but those will tide me over...along with my 360 until some really awesome games come out. which is supposed to be next year.

also i live in cali, so i'll get taxed anywhere i buy something other than amazon. even if i could find a ps3 for 399, it would still be pretty close to the 470 i spent. and that would probably not include all these blu ray movies :)

i think i made a fine choice...but with the end of month bills...it's gonna be tight lol :)

I dont know too much about the cables, and know that for the most part if it works it works, but things like 28AWG and 22 confuse me.The American Wired Guide (AWG) is the rating which basically relates to how long the cable can be without degradation to signal (it's either gonna be able to carry the signal that distance or it won't).

Cheap HDMI like the $12.99 3 foot cable at newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812105827) will work as well as a $100+ cable elsewhere. Need something longer? Here's a 10foot HDMI for $17.99 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812105829).

you'll see the discount on the last page of the order, right before your submit the order. But again, the deal for under 499 is dead.

The deal is still working for me too. I'm thinking about placing an order...

Did you guys follow the instructions and check the boxes on the appropriate page to add the items to the cart? Or did you add the items separately? Maybe that's where the deal went wrong?

1. Check the boxes next to the PLAYSTATION 3 below as well as three Blu-ray discs that you'd like to order today. (Limit one console and three of each title per customer. Quantities are limited; order now before we run out!)
2. Make your purchase--the promotional discount will be applied at checkout. You will see a credit in your shopping cart.

I'm really tempted to jump in at this deal. The pros are that I would get an EE equip PS3 guaranteeing that it will be compatible with my entire USA PS library. On the downside, an emulated system might open up the possibility of playing import PS2 games. This and the sony card deal are best I've seen so far (though, I don't want another credit card). I'll try to decide by today.

Hey, I don't know if this is covered elsewhere in this thread, but in case it's not:

I'm finding that this deal has enabled another older deal that I missed out on. It seems since buying the PS3, I'm getting 10% off every BR and HD-DVD disc I buy (even on the freebies). I was supposed to get that deal when I bought 3 HD-DVDs right after the New Year, but they told me I had missed out. Glad I'm able to get it now. That should save me a bunch. :)

One more question. Sorry, I'm an idiot:

On the form it says to mail "The original UPC code located on the outside of the player package." with the order form. Does that mean I need to actually cut the UPC code off the box and mail it in? Or can I just write the code down on a piece of paper?

The deal is not really dead just the amount that you can get off. The B2G1 free blue ray deal is dead thus negating the additional 20 dollars off that people were reporting.

You have to use the link from the orignal post and add to your cart from there. I think the deal is dead but Amazon didn't take down the page from their system so you can loophole yourself in before they fix it. I thought it was dead too but just put in an oder using this method.

Just wanted to let you guys know that if your Blu Rays ship separate from the PS3 you'll end up getting charged for them. I understood why it happened so I wrote them a polite email telling them about it. So they were nice enough to not only fix the problem, but instead of removing the cost of the cheapest Blu Ray movie they went ahead and removed all three. I didn't just get them for free, they basically paid me to take them. My final total was 438.71!

I deleted the email but I think the agent was doing it as a good will gesture sort of thing. Because if it was just another mistake I would've let them know about it. I would have that on my conscious because that's just the way I am. The email was very vague and didn't outright claim that's what he did, but it also didn't say anything about what I'd asked (which was just the original order for 478.04). All he said was something along the lines of "I hope what I've done to your order is enough to satisfy your needs, and continuing shopping with Amazon.". At first I thought "Oh no, he didn't do what I asked at all." Then I saw the total was 438.71, and of course I was more than pleased with that outcome. That was the total for the PS3, and my Blu Rays shipped at 0.00.

It hasn't been dead that long. This deal wasn't a mistake or glitch(at least the way I was going to use it). Maybe the way the deal was originally posted was a glitch/mistake, but now the non-mistake part is also dead. The only part that was was the part where you could get the free blu-rays with the PS3 and also take advantage of a b2g1 blu-ray deal to get a PS3 with blu-rays for less than $499. It was still a good deal paying full price for the PS3 and getting 3 free Blu-rays in addition to the 5 from the mail in form.

Not sure what's going on - I ordered mine Monday AM - but it still hasn't shipped. Maybe it was our choice of which free blu-rays, or the fact that I stuck with the free shipping. (Keeping a really close eye on that 500$ bottom line though. I'm really beginning to suspect that my order went in during the final twilight hours of this thing. It's interesting that I ordered Monday 9/10, and they're only now billing me/taking the money 9/13. Maybe that means it's getting ready to ship.)

The extra 10% off is from an HD movie promo amazon had at the beginning of the year. It's good for one year, no minimum or limit.

In July, I fell for the no more EE chip hype and got a 60 PS3...I sold the PS3 two weeks ago for the lack of any thing to play on it...You'd be better off holding on to your PS2 and waiting a little bit...The PS3 will drop in price again, probably after Christmas, if not before, and by waiting and keeping your PS2, you have 100% backward compatibilty and PS3 at a lower price.

UG - now I'm curious; I still have my PS3 and PS2. Not certain it's a valid comparison though, I've got my PS2 running to an S-video on the TV and the PS3 is just using regular component video.

Huh - maybe I ought to swap that around.

Component is better than s-video. Did you mean composite?

At any rate, there was an initial issue with PS2 games that got fixed, but other than that the PS3 should display them as well or better (except in cases where the new model can't handle them right...)

This may have been mentioned previously in the thread, but before I cut apart my new PS3 box, I wanted to make sure the UPC is located on the top of the box near the handle. Just making sure. Thanks.

I'm wondering if it's worth it buying the PS3 with the EE chip or just wait for a PS3 price drop and wait for the Sony Emulation team to make the PS2 games 100% BC. Decisions, decision, what do you recommend, CAG??

I bit on this deal (actually the 8 free BR deal) and I think it's pretty good one, but if you wait long enough, I'm sure the price will drop further. In addition, the controller will have rumble starting in early 08 which is nice. Your call really.

Regarding the whole EE issue, I think it all depends on the following:

Do you have a large collection of PS1/PS2 games? If so, are all of them "mainstream" or are some of them obscure/rare?

Do you want to get rid of your Playstation 2?

Are you impatient? Do you even want to play any PS3 games on it, or are you hoping that you'd eventually get some games and want the better system? Do you want Rumble support?

Do you want a Blu-Ray Player?

Do you have $500 to burn?
---------------------------

Here was my thought process...

Backwards Compatibility
I have a few PS1/PS2 games that I want to be 100% sure will play on my next gen system. I felt that having the EE chip was best for backwards compatibility. Although miracles can happen and future non-EE PS3 systems may be able to be 100% backwards compatible, I doubt it will happen. I expect only the major releases to have full compatibility, whilist the obscure games get ignored. But honestly, nobody knows for sure.

Price
I bought mine (60 GB w/ EE chip) using the Sony Card $150 off promotion (system costing only $385 after tax). $500 was too much for me to justify the purchase, considering there are no system exclusive PS3 games that I want to buy this year. In addition, I was able to sell my PS2 privately for $90; so in actuality, it made my purchase feel like $295. If I was going to get a PS3, I had no need for a PS2.

Impatience
I'm incredibly impatient when there is a great promo or sale price. If its full price, I can wait. The 5 free Blu-Rays are tempting only if you like those movies, or can sell them on ebay. Most likely, with the right combo of movies, you can sell them for about $50 on ebay. A nice way to knock down the price.

HD vs. Blu-Ray War
I wouldn't worry so much about which format is 'winning' the war unless you plan on buying HD movies. The Blu-Ray is a bonus feature of the PS3. Its a video games system that also plays Blu Rays. I bought myself Planet Earth on Blu Ray and it looks great.

Rumble
I don't care about rumble support. I currently use the the PS2 controller adapter as a second controller (for PS2/PS1 games). When the rumble controllers hit retail, I may consider buying one.

Overall, my PS3 is currently being used to play some Blu Ray movies and PS2/PS1 games. I do not regret my purchase. Eventually I'll get some PS3 games.

Hope this helps.

So I take it the 80GB PS3 model doesn't have the EE chip?? If that's the case, as I do have a huge and I mean huge backlog of PS2 and PS1 games, and some of them are very rare, like the Shin Megami games on the PS1 and PS2, than I guess I'll have to get the EE chip PS3 version soon. I wonder if I should sell my PS2 system and at least get some cash from EB, or do you guys think I should keep it and just buy the PS3 60GB models before they're gone.

Yeah, the 80 GB doesn't have the EE chip and does BC through software emulation. Although I hear it's pretty good, it was the deal breaker for me and if it's important to you, get the 60 GB. Don't know how much credit you'd get for your PS2 at EB. I got a measly $30 at Game Crazy but I couldn't think of anything else to do with it.

If you checked the list (http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus), you'd see SMTIII, DDS, and even Devil Summoner all work with no problems on the 80GB model. And PS1 games should run the same on EE as EE-less, if I'm not mistaken.

Unfortunatly a number of the Final Fantasy titles on the Playstation 1 have issues, and Shadow of Destiny on the Playstation 2 apparently crashes on the model without the PS2-on-a-chip.

I bit on this deal, mainly because in spite of selling off a considerable number of my old PS1 RPGs, I still have a load of them, and I still have a load of PS2 games as well. I moved the PS2 to my son's room and have the PS3 in the living room (with the Wii and the 360). I really wanted the EE chip in my PS3, it's more important to me than a bigger hard drive.

I basically used the money I made selling my old stuff on ebay to pay off my new Mac, and get me a PS3...the way I figure it, the 7 blu ray films, plus the EE chip made it worth it to purchase now and wait for another game besides Resistance.

But if you're looking to jump in and play PS3 games, good luck, because I'm amazed at how little there is to play a year after its release...it's really kind of pathetic. There's lots in the pipeline, but right now....eesh!

I bought the PS3 a couple weeks ago using the $150 Sony card signup promo (I think its down to $100 now). Turns out you get 4000 points for the purchase and you can convert it to cashback which made the ps3 310+tax.

Sadly I've run out of Blu ray movies to watch and I can't even get in on the Toysrus deal because there aren't three ps3 games I would want to keep.

If you want the PS3, I personally think now is the time to get it. (Which is why I did.)

It hasn't been confirmed, but most people expect the 80 GB to drop in price to $500 once the 60 GB is sold out. Nobody knows whether it will still include Motorstorm. But for me, even if you don't factor in the EE chip, 8 Blu-Rays was worth more than 1 game (which might not even be included after the price drops) and 20 GB of space. I never owned a PS2 and there are a lot of games I want to go back and play (and can now get cheap), so the EE chip was the icing on the cake.

The new rumble controller was just announced, but won't be released in North America until early next year. No word yet on whether it will be packaged with the new systems (though I'd be surprised if it wasn't).

There's also a rumor floating around that there will be a 40 GB for $400 with Spider-man 3 Blu-Ray by Christmas.

So what is worth more to you?
-- Definite: 60 GB space + 7 Blu-Rays + EE chip + you get it now
-- Likely, if you wait until 60 GB is gone: 80 GB space + *maybe* 1 game
-- Possibly, if you wait until Christmas: 40 GB space + 1 Blu-Ray + $100 Savings
-- Possibly, if you wait until after Christmas: 40 GB space + 1 Blu-Ray? + $100 Savings + rumble included (I suspect they'll switch out the Blu-Ray for the rumble controller, but that is 100% speculation on my part)

how does one get an extra 10% off?

Hmm..thanks for all the inputs, even though Sony has the list of BC games for it's non-EE chip versions, I doubt they'll ever going to fix all the issues and make it 100% working order, as MS is still getting complaints over not fixing there emulations for the BC list on the 360 and with Blu-ray movies for free, it's tempting for awhile, but I think my huge backlog of PS2 and PS1 games will keep me entertained for awhile at least, before more good games come out on the PS3, like MGS4, FFXIII, and others.

I forgot to ask, when does this offer expire?? it doesn't say on Amazon?? or does it expire until all the PS3 60GB consoles have been sold out??

One thing to note; Toshiba has already planned on extending their free HD-DVD promotion past the current expiration date.

You can bet Sony will match that, at minimum. So if you're worried about the free movie deal never coming back, don't be.
