i was very unhappy with it...the way the game played, it should have came out before Chaos Theory..and the 360 version was a stripped version..
To the Op....it all depends on what titles from what system you are interested in... that will help you out..

OP, do you have a PS2? Because that still looks like the best option for a JRPG/platformer fix. The remaining 60gb PS3's are the last batch of consoles with the Emotion Engine; basically, if hardware emulation is important to you and you don't have a PS2, picking up a 60gb PS3 before they're discontinued may not be a bad call (plus there's a good sale running on Amazon right now that allows you to get 8 blu-ray dvds for free; if you don't want to keep them, you could sell them to recoup some of the cost of the system). The problem with the PS3 is that it currently doesn't have much in the way of standout excellent exclusives: Ninja Gaiden Sigma is there, Folklore looks like it may be a good platformer, Ratchet and Clank is coming later this year, and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune could well be a hit. The biggest exclusive on the radar right now for the PS3 is MGS4, with FFXIII on the distant horizon.
The 360 is definitely the console for shooters: Bioshock is great, and Halo and Mass Effect are dropping soon. There are additionally a number of promising shooters coming for both 360 and PS3; keep in mind that, although it isn't free, Xbox live is far superior to Playstation Network right now - if online play is important to you, the 360 has a real upper hand. JRPG's are slowly trickling onto the 360; Blue Dragon is releasing this week, though it's received fairly mediocre reviews, and Eternal Sonata is coming out soon - I enjoyed the demo, but I don't know how good the game as a whole is going to be. There are a couple of platformers on the 360 (PenguinMaster mentioned Kameo and Lost Planet) but for my money they're don't compare to last gen's best.
I've been unimpressed with the Wii so far for the most part, but if you're a huge 3D Metroid fan, Metroid Prime: Corruption just came out. The only Wii game I'm interested in is Smash Bros Brawl, which comes out Dec. 3.
Hope that helps.

Well, if your looking for games to play right now, out of the 3, there isn't much of a contest, the 360 is the only system that has many quality games out to play right now. The Wii and PS3 are still building their libraries (in fairness, those systems have been out less than a year, and it's in the 2nd year that the library gets built up nicely).
The future is very hard to say. Sony has dominated 2 generations, hard to imagine they will just fall completely apart. The Wii will likely, at some point (arguably may have happened already) that it will lead this generation in sales. That being said, with the funky controller, expect 3rd party games to be controlled oddly, and Nintendo exclsives, though great, often come out spaced far apart.
My rule of thumb has always been to have 3 games on the system that are "must play" games. If a system has this, they usually have a bunch of other games I would buy also (but not buy a system for), and then just go from there. Though, ultimately, I always want to own every system.

Xbox 360 hands down, there's really no question about it. Right now the 360 is the place to be, it's getting a shitload of amazing, unbelievably groundbreaking games. Right now the PS3 is just finally getting a passable library, but nothing astounding to speak of.
Ask me again in two years and the answer may be different, but as you're asking me now, the only logical answer is the 360.
If I did decide to predict the future, I'd have to give it to the 360 as well, hands down. Even with the PS3's price drop, at the very height of its potential, the 360 dominated the PS3 in sales, and keeps doing so very consistantly. Unless everything completely radically changes, PS3 will continue to sell under 200k units a month and the gap will only widen between it and the 360. This means developers will be turning to the 360 for not only the largest install base, but the largest attach rate as well.
If you enjoy JRPG's and Platformers I'll also have to say that buying a Wii to go along with your 360 will be a fantastic investment, especially after this holiday. With all the amazing JRPG's and Platformers coming out for the Wii, I'd place the Wii's library just behind the 360's (though the Wii actually would have more platformers than the 360).
If you can afford it, the Xbox 360 and Wii together will definitely have the best game line-up in the near future.
You definitely won't regret it, though I do recommend possibly waiting on the Wii a bit, as right now its library is lacking (like I said: that will be solved by this holiday). Super Mario Galaxy promises to become an absolute classic of this generation.
Of course, be sure not to sell your PS2. There are still fantastic games coming out for it (check out Persona 3 this month).

For what you're asking for, Xbox 360 would be the best solution.

Have you seen Blue Dragon (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/rpg/bluedragon/index.html) or Lost Odyssey (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/rpg/lostodyssey/index.html) for the 360?
In the realm of western RPGs, Oblivion is available now (also on PS3), and you can expect Mass Effect, Fable 2 and Fallout 3 in the future on the 360.

JRPGs- PS3 (Possibly Wii)
While nothing has really been announced, it is assumed the the PS3 will get the Final Fantasy Series maybe Dragon Quest.
Xbox 360 has many new JRPGs, but is not doing well enough in Japan for Japanese companies to really bring over the big guns.
Wii had Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest offshoots, and has Opoona, Chocobo's Dungeon, Fire Emblem, Paper Mario, etc.
Shooters- Xbox 360
Xbox 360 is King here with Gears of War and Halo Leading the way.
The PS3 follows with Resistance Fall of Man and a few more.
The Wii is lagging with only Metroid Prime 3 as a major Shooter/Adventure. There are more shooters coming, but right now Metroid Prime is the Big Bad...
Platform- Wii
Mario Galaxy is poised to be the NEXT BIG Platformer, and Nintendo always has several mascot based Adventures. Sonic and the Secret Rings is the strongest Sonic the Hedgehog effort in a while.
PS3 has Ratchet and Clank. I can't think of any others, but I am sure there are a couple.
Xbox 360 has Kameo, I guess. I really don't know if that would be Platform or action.
Overall, I think the Wii could be your Best Bet if you are into 2/3 catagories. I think it will get the Lion's Share of JRPGs (Top System in Japan), and will get the majority of the Platformers.
If it continues to sell well, the shooters will come.

Good post, Lynsanity, but I'd like to add a few things:
JRPGs- PS3 (Possibly Wii)
Wii had Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest offshoots, and has Opoona, Chocobo's Dungeon, Fire Emblem, Paper Mario, etc. You're missing some of the best stuff: Wii has Xenosaga and Baten Kaitos.
Not to mention all the amazing titles that Nintendo has which it could (and fucking better) bring over to the Wii.
The PS3 follows with Resistance Fall of Man and a few more.
The Wii is lagging with only Metroid Prime 3 as a major Shooter/Adventure. There are more shooters coming, but right now Metroid Prime is the Big Bad...Resistance was mediocre at best. PS3's big FPS is Killzone 2... which is a sequel to arguably one of the biggest forgettable let-downs in videogame history... and it's coming out way far away off in next year. Other than that PS3 has multi-platform shooters, but the real quality ones, as you said, are 360 exclusives.
But the Wii has lots of shooters, and a bunch of arcade-light-gun type titles coming out. The problem with Wii is that the shooters are very unique to the system, and you really won't be seeing the waves of must-have titles on that system.
Xbox 360 has Kameo, I guess. I really don't know if that would be Platform or action.Xbox 360 has RARE, with Banjo Three-ie coming up. This is by far the 360's leading platformer. Kameo was underrated and fun, but I wouldn't call it a platformer.

I don't have live so I don't know how it was online, SP though sucked ass. I wouldn't take it as a gift, and today it is in my top 10 worst retail purchases list. Luckily I got $50 for it from a friend. :D Yeah Viva Pinata was pretty good, I enjoyed it and Kameo. Also no Dead Rising on that list! HAX! ;)

Could Overlord possibly fit in that catagory also? I've only played the demo, but I'm interested in the title when it drops under $30.

No, I don't think so.
Unless the real gameplay is desperately different than what I saw in the demo.
Right now the only real platformers for the 360 are liscenced games (Ratatouille and the like)... the last liscenced Platformer I liked was a Spongebob Squarepants game... and it was only passable.
I'm hoping Bajo is good, and that we get a real next-gen Rayman.

It's pretty up in the air. My xbox worked perfectly ever since I got it, my 360 started giving me DREs the first night I booted it up. I'll cross my fingers for you though ;)
