Between those two, the Quad and overclock it yourself. Or you could get a cheaper dual core and overclock that. Unless you buy the best of everything, I don't think you'll see much of a differences in whatever you do. Is there even any games or programs that take advantage of quad core cpus?

I would get the dual core cause I don't think my motherboard supports quad core

It's tough to say at this point. It doesn't seem like most games are taking advantage of quad core over dual core yet, but they probably will in the future. I would probably go with the quad core, but I don't think you will have made a bad choice with either.

I read that dual core is the best right now but quad core wil be future proofing. i'd probably go with a cheap dual core now & OC if you want, and upgrade to a quad core later on if necessary.

That's what I would do too.

for me, I would go for Quad Core.. I know Graphic and 3d programs are starting to use multiprocessors more efficantly then games so I would be able to hold out for about 3-4 years.... but intel wants to put out a 80 or so core chip within the next few years... god damn, thats real over kill.

i'm leaning towards quad core for a few reasons
1. games: seems games are more dependent on GPU & DX hardware support and less importance is placed on CPU... 2 x 8800 ulta SLI anyone?
2. apps: i usually have a lot of windows/apps open.. if i had more cores, i'd prolly have more crap running
3. and as someone said earlier, future proofing
but ya, either would be way better than my p4 3.2 right now... :D

Go with the dual core. By the time most apps actually take advantge of quad core it'll be time to upgrade anyway.
