Boy, this thread is going to be full of so much wrong, we'll have enough to make wrong cookies. Which are an excellent source of calcium when eaten with milk.
When not eaten with milk, they aren't a good source of anything.
I'm sure what I'm going to say will add myself to this wrong list, so here goes:
Diablo 2.
It is a good game mechanically and fairly well executed, but it didn't end up being what I was hoping the game would be.

Another title I would like to add to the list would be:

Halo 2 and MGS 2: Sons of Liberty, for the same reason:
Game Developer: "Our first game was a huge hit, what should we do for the sequel?"
Janitor walking down the hallway: "How about make them play through the games as someone other than the main character?"
Game Developer: "Great idea, thanks janitor!"
Seriously though, I know they sold a crap-load of copies, but I was really annoyed at the Raiden and Arbiter stuff. The single-player of the first Halo was much better than Halo 2. I know Halo 2 had the multiplayer content, but I felt ripped off with the Arbiter missions. They should have made a longer Master Chief story and then released the Arbiter gameplay as downloadable content.
And even though MGS3's main character was Big Boss, it was still a great game.

The X-Box and the 360.
The fanboys would cream their pants over Halo yet when given the chance to play it was the same as every other FPS. Of course I didn't buy either one of these but it's fun to point at the 360 people who got the RROD and laugh. Shoddy company, shoddy product. Do your homework.
Final Fantasy XII. That was a steaming pile of crap. I would go farther but let's just say that this is the last time I pay $50 for a FF game unless played beforehand.
Dark Cloud. Hailed by Sony as a Zelda killer but the only thing it killed was my interest in it.
The DS web browser. I got it for free but still feel I payed too much.
State of Emergency. OMFG. I deserve a beating for buying this game. Horrible. I was told this was going to be just like GTA. Ugh, last time I listen to anyone without testing first. On top of that(I still don't know why to this day, I NEVER buy strategy guides)I bought the guide. Now you see why I deserve a massive beating?
Madden for the SNES. I was and still am a HUGE Super Tecmo Bowl fan. friend of mine said that Madden blows it away. Well I tried it and it blew all right. STB is still the best football game hands down IMO to this day.
Metroid Prime. Those fucking bastards ruined Metroid by turning it into a FPS. I know I always have the DS and GBA version but still. Let Microshit have Halo and LEAVE METROID ALONE YOU FUCKERS!! But that's not going to happen.

Honestly? The Ps2. I loved the Ps1 back in the days when I had time to play RPGs. I got a Ps2 with he same line of thought, but I can't really take RPgs over 20 hours or so anymore. After that point, I just wasn't too impressed with the lineup, even though the system is prolific. I have maybe, 15 games for my Ps2.
It's not a BAD system, it just wasn't this great thing I thought it was going to be.

I cant really think of much. My tastes are so narrow, that I'm very accurate when it comes to knowing in advance that I'll like a game and subsequently being excited about it.
The only thing that comes close was Contact. Even then, I see the value in the game, I just didnt like the pacing or the combat. It wasnt really for me.

I'm very picky about games, so I rarely run into something that turns out to be a complete disappointment. In fact, it's only truly happened once, where I anticipated a game, it passed all the filters (sound good?, what do others think?, early reviews?, so on), and I was generally very excited about getting it home and booting it up, only to later discover after a few hours that I just didn't like it at all.
That game was Shenmue.
I gave the game a fair shake, at least 15 hours of gameplay (I quit at a stage in the game that had something to do with a forklift). And I think I got it, as best I could: Asian soap opera involving thugs and other bullshit. But when you come right down to it, eventually I got sick of talking to all those assholes. The weather changes! It's a real-time day! Big fucking deal when I've got to shlep across town just to find out I'm supposed to put milk in the kitty's saucer. Then I've got to grind out some cash in a lousy arcade so some dick will teach me fight moves one at a time. And even that doesn't make things interesting.
The thing I learned about dothog from Shenmue is that, in moving from one part of the narrative to another, I'd much rather have countless random, annoying Jelly Slime battles than just have boring dialogue and more boring dialogue.
I realize this is highly subjective and there are some people who love the game, but yeah, Shenmue for me is a steaming pile of shit. If there are people out there who consider it a masterpiece--well, more power to you, shiteaters!

Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror - Not really a turd, nor was I really all that excited to play it, but it definitely was not the amazing game that people hyped it up to be. The online mode has to be the worst I've seen in a game in a good long while. The community just ruins any fun that could've been had. It was a good game, but flawed.

I was also mega disappointed with the Gamecube until it became obsolete. N64 had tons of quality awesome games that I wanted sequels to and they almost all ended up being worse (Sunshine, Jungle Beat) or non-existant (Perfect Dark, Banjo, CBFD) on the Gamecube. They REALLY fucked up by losing Rare's support. I was playing DKC for SNES today and was just in awe at so many nuances in that game that I rarely ever see nowadays.

Holy shit I've found my bizzarro twin on a couple of these. I've gotta respond to Bizzarro Me because he's not on topic, he's just dumping on the Cube.
I was never excited about DKC but I'd say it's a mild turd for all the bogus build-up it gets. Incidentally, that's the same way I feel about Rare games in general: what's the big deal? Am I supposed to ignore the suck because of Goldeneye (which I'm admittedly not crazy about, though I don't begrudge the game its critical praise) and maybe Blast Corps?
I guess the major brainbender is that someone believes that Jungle Beat is worse than DK64. Mothergrabbin' Jungle Beat, which rocked the cube six ways to sunday and made those bongos worth owning. You've blown my mind grapes, Bizzarro Me.

Well I have to go back and throw some clumping litter on the pile of poo Gears of War was again...
Here is some thought behind this one....
Take the ideas of RE4 and implement them into the game because you were such a big fan of the game "as Cliffy mentioned"
But does anyone remember or have played the other pile of poo of a game that Gears totally rips of " Kill.Switch" from Namco?
Gear is basically a clone of that game with a shiny coat of paint on it and aliens instead of generic terroists..
I am still waiting for the Next-Gen games to come out.. those Wow games all they seem to call next gen games now are games we have all played before with nice pretty Graphics..

OP, great idea for a topic.
For the Wii: (the system itself is a bit of a letdown, I have yet to buy a full priced game and be impressed...)
Super Paper Mario has turned out to be a complete waste of my time, and I played through the first boss and realized I'd be better off going to the library and renting out a 10,000 page novel, because that would require less reading.
Mario Strikers Charged, I just bought that at Costco, and I was REALLLY hyped for this one. I usually do not buy games on day 1, but I couldn't help myself (see my screename and I think you'll understand.) Instead of a soccer game like Mega Man Soccer or Head on Soccer (both arcade styles soccer games for SNES and both great) we get this Mario Party rip off game where the comptuer cheats its way into a victory every time and the game basically comes down to who can get off more super shots, which become overused and BORING.
Warioware - HOW DOES THIS GAME GET OVER A 9.0 AT GS?!? Even Cheapy was talking about how the single player was a blast. IT IS NOT A BLAST. It was a game I sold within minutes of buying it. TERRIBLE! It is like a Japanese acid trip...
360: (the fact that they all breaks seems to be the big disappointment here...)
Call of Duty 3 - After playing COD2, this game seems worse than the first. You have to play both to understand. I hope COD4 is all they are hyping it to be.
As for all of the Gears of War bashers, this was the second game I purchased for the 360, and I played it once and didn't put it in my system again until this past summer when a firend got it. We played co-op for over 10 hours. Single player and multiplayer is not fun, but for some reason this game redeems itself with the co-op, especially since it is playable from two different houses.

Mario Kart: Double Dash: I enjoy the game, but it's easily the worst in the series. The lack of any great multiplayer mode (plus block fort) is what really kills it for me. I played the game a ton when it came out and unlocked everything, yet now all I can do is groan whenever someone wants to play it. I wouldn't call this game a turd by any means, but I was really thrilled for it and it let me down a little.
Perfect Dark Zero: Is a gigantic turd. However, I wasn't really too excited about the game, so no big.
Call of Duty 3: It's essentially the same as CoD2, except for some reason it's just pretty shitty.
Draekon
09-05-2007, 11:25 AM
While I wouldn't exactly call it a 'turd' per say, Gears of War was a real let down to me in a variety of ways for me. While I know Epic isn't too great with storylines (aka Unreal I & II), they did semi-decent with Gears and the game felt pretty fluid too. Except it ended very abruptly, the game was easy (even on insane), and the enemy variety was rather poor. Plus the multiplayer absolutely pales in comparison to my beloved Unreal Tournament games in just about every single way. They really shouldof let it sit in development longer to flush out the story more with a wider variety of enemies, and put more in to the multiplayer.
While I still enjoyed the game, especially as co-op, I have to say... BRING ON UNREAL TOURNAMENT 3 BITCHES!

Crusin USA for N64. Nintendo said it would be a 100% perfect arcade port with added features such as a bumper car mini game. Neither were true, it was choppier than in the arcade and it was censored (animals removed from the entire game) and no new modes were added. Worse, a memory card was required to save.

Ah, finally thought of two. Kinda.
Knights of the Old Republic 2 was not a turd. It played and look the same as its fantastic predecessor, of course. The story, however? The non-Bao-Dur-characters? The fact that it was only half finished? A little on the turdish side.
Deus Ex: Invisible War was crap. The physics were poorly done. The characters looked weird. The RPG elements from the original were all but removed, and the shooting was far too bland to compensate.

Perfect Dark Zero
Battlefield 2 (PC)
Silent Hill 4

Unfortunatly, I'm gonna have to add Bioshock to the list. While by no means a "turd", I bought it after hearing so much great stuff about it. It was a solid game and all, but it felt so much like half-life mixed with Star Wars (force shock, telekenesis, etc.) that I felt like I had played it many times before. Luckily I only paid $40 for it and I can trade it for $42 credit Saturday.

All of the RAW vs. SmackDown! games for PS2. After a VERY nice (or atleast in regards to wrestling games on PS2) SD5: Here Comes The Pain, the first RAW vs. SD game was a total turd with the others following suit.
As far as crapping on GC, I love it and have one with pretty much all the hits sans the quasi-RPGs that were released since I can't stand them. I just felt let down. DK Jungle Beat and Mario Sunshine weren't turds but they're nowhere near as good to me as any of the games that preceded them in the same franchise. I felt that they would have been better as a break from tradition, not the platformer-turned-retard version of Guitar Hero (Donkey Konga 2 especially, not so much the other two bongo games) and the platformer-turned-germophobia assault vehicle.
As far as my love for Rare, I just really enjoyed their games. There's tons of reasons why:
They put out games that could be played and enjoyed by everybody. You didn't need to be a FPS nut to play Goldeneye nor a genius to figure out how to complete the objectives.
The games also got progressively harder but they never broke away from their core. A LOT of developers forget this. You don't make a game harder as it goes by increasing enemies or taking away life/energy/fuel etc. A game also should never get harder either because its limitations hamper the gameplay (e.g. lots of jumping in the later levels of a platformer even though the button detection sucks)
Kinda tying into the last reason, the gameplay was always built and layered very well. Especially in the DKC games, when you were presented with learning how to overcome a new task you weren't given some stupid tutorial and then expected to do it right away. Instead you were smoothed into the process until you realized you could do it without trying. A specific example is the use of the tires that were littered about in the first one. When you first encounter them, you see bananas above that are higher than normal jumping distance so you jump on the tire to get them. Later on you'll see a platform instead of the bananas so you know to use the tire to bounce up high. Further on down the line you roam through a level passing a lone tire and you reach a high platform. You figure out that you have to move the tire near the platform to jump up. Lots of games will just start you off with a tire somewhere in the distance and a high platform without explaining the connection. You'll think the tire is for something else until you start experimenting.
I think DK64 gets crapped on very unfairly. It gets shat on for being too much of a fetch quest but it never felt like that to me. I thought it was genius that to break up the monotony you had to use different characters to achieve different goals. Too many developers would make the main game all about Donkey Kong and then make using the others a bonus. When I think of fetch quest I think of King Kong or even moreso Super Mario 64 (beating the same level three different ways with the same guy?).

Here's one that I'm sure some people will disagree with but for me it just didn't live up to what it could (maybe should) have been.
Super Mario Sunshine.
It was the first new mario platformer in so long that I was super excited and then I found out that I was cleaning shit.
At first I thought the same thing... but after watching my son play this game for years (and years) it is a really nice little game.
Pac Man (2600) (traded it to a kid down the street for 2 Activision games the same day I bought it... Kaboom and Pitfall 2 I believe)
Gears Of War (360) (nothing new...)
Death Jr (PSP)(yeah, a stinker)
Star Wars Batttlefront II (PC)(it was the same as part one !!!!)
The Simpsons (both SNES games... man, they sucked)

Bioshock, didn't it take them 7 years to make the game? And there's 7 levels. Wow, one level per year! And those damn 10/10 reviews. The game is good but not excellent, nor perfect. Also, there is no multiplayer after you beat the game. Worth a rental, not $60.

I have to say Sonic the Hedgehog Next Gen. They should of took their time to fix the game instead of rushing it. I can safety say that because I have played through the entire game.
Also Capcom Fighting Evolution a lazy game with cut and paste characters from other games. They didn't bother to update any of the sprites and some of those characters were lifted from Playstation One games!
And it just didn't have the fun that Marvel vs Capcom and Capcom vs Snk games had.

Let's see, some of these have already been mentioned, some haven't.
Sonic Heroes
Deus Ex: Invisible War
Devil May Cry 2
Super Smash Bros. Melee- hyped out the ass about how the single player was improved. I buy it and find out it's pretty shallow single player game.
WWE games on Xbox- while GC & PS2 got decent games, Xbox got crappy games by developers that had no experience with wrestling games.

Call of Duty 3. The second game I bought for 360 and it completely sucked. Take any mediocre PC FPS and it kills this one. COD 2 was amazing though, and COD 4 looks to redeem itself. Thank god they went back to the original developer.

Yea, definitely a rental. All the reviews say, "you will play through it through again". I didn't get that feeling. Mine was more like, sell it back now while I can still almost break even. Don't get me wrong, the game is one of the best I have played this year, but when you can beat it in like 3 days, don't waste your money buying it.

Dirge of fucking Cerberus - Even with the bad reviews, as an FFVII fan, I had hopes. Nothing can save this game... the story was painfully insipid, the music bland and unmemorable, and the gameplay the worst I've ever come across in any action-oriented game.
Xenosaga Episode I - *snores*
Final Fantasy XII - Not a total waste, but definately does/did not live up to the hype (and my hopes). It would be absolutely brilliant if it was about 30 hours shorter and the main character was Ashe instead of Vaan. Still playing this one, technically, but it hasn't been touched in well over a month.

Virtually anything for the Sega Master System on a card. Transbot and F-16 Fighting Falcon especially. Ghost House too.
Space Harrier II's level theme would have been more appropriate for Harvest Moon.
WWF Superstars on the Game Boy's only redeeming value was being able to take the Hulk Hogan and Mr. Perfect themes wherever you went. (the Million Dollar Man's was an interesting interpretation) Also, Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game, which removed everything fun from both Wrestlefest and Mortal Kombat, and mixed what was left with Vince McMahon reading NBA Jam announcer scripts. Actually, all WWF 2D wrestling games were a letdown.
But they weren't the only ones. Wrestle War on the Mega Drive was great in the arcade, and advertised domestically (U.S.) in the first Genesis posters bundled with games. You can play it on the Dreamcast's Sega Smash Pack.
And thanks, Sega, for the sound emulation in the Sega Smash Pack. Yuzo Koshiro's music couldn't sound better were it played by an orchestra of armpit farts.
Psychic World (Game Gear), Shadow of the Beast, Turrican, or any game where contact with an enemy equals a constant drain of the life bar.
All shareware advertised from '92 - '95.
The EB "make your own game" kit from 6 or so years ago.
The 32X itself, but Doom crashing to a C:\, losing in Brutal because the round began and the computer hit you before your life bar was filled, and Cosmic Carnage's existence deserve special notice.

Turd might be a bit harsh, but games I was really looking forward to and ended up not really liking at all would include:
Too true. The title of this topic should have been: "ITT We Lambaste Games We Hate That Are Critically Acclaimed!"
As fro what this topic actually asked for, games that I was hyped up for, but turned out to be disapointing:
1) All-Pro 2008 -- Don't get me wrong, it's a decent title and all, but after NFL 2k5 (which is is still one of the greatest Football titles ever), I was expecting something more. What I got was a stripped down version of NFL 2k5. Great game play can only take you so far.
2) Lair -- Without a doubt, the PS2's "Bouncer". It had promise, but was rushed out the gate to help give depth to an otherwise shallow library. Good thing I saw it's mediocrity months ago (here's a helpful tip: when game mags and sites start dropping hints in their previews that a game's going to suck, chances are high that it's going to suck).
3) SNK Vs Capcom Card Fighters DS -- Take Yu-Gi-Oh & Magic, then strip away everything that makes either good and you get this. Oh, and toss in the worst single player campaign ever and you've got this turd.
Chess. Everybody talks about how great it is, and how it makes you, like, think and stuff, but it totally sucks. First, everybody has the same army; second, your guys don't level up; also, you always play with some haxxors who do that "castling" shit; lastly, it doesn't use up 1/1000th of a blu ray. You'd think a game that's been in development for 500 years would actually be good. So don't listen to reviewers.
EDIT: Oh, also, DMC 2 and MGS2.

Here is one that Level 5 dumped on us deemed the Zelda game for the PS2 lol

I know I'm going to make a few say 'wtf' with this list or most of it anyway.
Stuntman-playing a mission a couple times to get it right= not bad, playing it fuckin 90 times because I miss my mark by a half a damned millimeter=annoying
State Of Emergency-biggest turd I've ever played in my life and I've played(and liked) ET for the 2600(then again, I was 9-10 when I played that)
Knights Of The Old Republic-I expected this to be an action title and instead of that I ran into the craptacularness I associate with the Final Fantasy games. Turn based play does NOT belong in a Star Wars game, a universe known for massive battles and lots of ACTION
Devil May Cry series-Horrible lock on and NO voice overs? YAY!! I get to read everything that this slappy is reading or thinking. Boorrrrring.
Star Wars Battlefront-one shot kills, by the enemy troops=a little too realistic and annoying for me.....
Ico-grab a dumb girl from a cage, drag her from point a to point b to point c, all while beating away demons, etc, etc. Wow, haven't heard of this story before, SO groundbreaking.
Chronicles Of Riddick-I tried giving this FPS a real shot, but I just couldn't get past the fact that it was another semi ho hum FPS with more 'different' weapon types. You've played one FPS, you've played them all.
I'm just glad most of the games I listed had better trade values than what I paid for them and in the case of SOE, EB gave me my money back because I pissed and moaned enough about it.
I have more, but really can't think of them right at this moment.

Don't exactly agree with your opinions, but that's to be expected...
KOTOR is one of the best xbox games, and one of the best games period of last generation. Bioware = win.
Riddick is a great game also, totally underrated.
DMC 1 and 3 are great, not so much 2.
Never played ICO, but heard great things about it. From what you hate, I'm sure i'd like this game too.
State of Emergency is a general concensus.. one of, if not THE worst game I have EVER played. Why that game got ANY hype is beyond me.

The bolded ones are the ones I think you must be on drugs or something. ;) Na j/k it's your opinion and your entitled to it I just disagree with it. The biggest one I disagree with is Ico. If you ever played Shadow of the Colossus you would love/understand this game. They both go together so well and you have to put the story together, to understand what happened and why you are doing this ect. I think that is why I love both of those games and could never get rid of them.

I just expected KOTOR to be more like Battlefront, which I also hated, but for a different reason. I mean, tons of laser fire going over and by my head was what I expected outta KOTOR too. But, I didn't expect to have to stop, choose an attack, watch my character attack, then repeat. I expected it to be more of an action RPG. It moved too SLOW for my liking.
I still don't like the DMC games for the lock on that I felt was poorly done, but what I meant by my comment was all the text bs when you either went to a door and it was locked or picked up any item. Great, it's locked, you couldn't have just lemme know by making a doorknob being jiggled sound effect instead of telling me 'the door is locked'. OK, so I found an XYZ item, bring up my inventory with a description, don't scroll bs text for 2 minutes to tell me what it is.
Maybe I just WANTED to find something wrong with the DMC games, but quite frankly, I found them to be more tedious than other games in the action genre(even the older game Rygar I found interesting by comparison). Then again, I played God Of War before I ever played ANY of the DMC games, so I probably was spoiled by the straight up action(some will call it button mashing, but there ARE combos)of GOW.
I mean, I felt as if DMC was more of a Silent Hill type of game, where you have to go around, find out which door is open, beat some monsters in between and just flesh out the story piece by piece, where GOW was just action from the word go I felt.
It did feel epic, but I guess I'm one of the short attention span people that devs are making games shorter for anymore, so we can get them done in 1-2 sittings and not say 'theres tons of boring levelling up in it'.
Either way, these are still only MY opinions and since the DMC trilogy hit GH status, that means there were more people out there that liked it than didn't. So, maybe I'm just picky?

You do seem more of the GOW type, as I kinda figured that is why you didn't like DMC to start with. Anybody that played DMC before GOW usually likes both, rather then the other way around. IMO DMC is the better game over GOW any day. Ya know I just can't stand there and block block block hit, block block block ect in DMC. I have to actually evade attacks instead of just sitting there holding down a block button all day. To each their own I guess, like I said I just HIGHLYdisagree with your opinion.

Super Mario RPG. I still consider this one of the better games I've ever played but doing an RPG with Mario is so inexcusable. It's a platformer first and foremost so having to level up like a fiend for that final boss fight was ridiculous. I seriously must have lost a couple of friends over playing that last fight. Didn't the boss have something like 1,000,000 hp?

Whenever I read about this sort of thing in the ancient texts, prophesied by the great Shamans of the Before Time, I always thought they were crazy. "This is crazy!" I'd say, and slam the book closed. "NO ONE does that sort of thing!"

Out of curiosity though, what did you find to be worse about it? I have to agree with Plinko, I enjoyed the first Kingdom Hearts more than the second.
For me, the battle system was worse. There are just so many things going on and so many options that I forget I have things. Like I totally forgot that I even had the overdrive things, or whatever they are callled. I'm not saying it's a bad game, it's just less enjoyable for me than the first one.

I'm the same way; the second KH was decent, but it was no KH1. I much preferred the story and especially the battle system of the first game. The second game's battle system was too focused on flash (with those special moves) and not so much on substance.

Lufia: The Ruins of Lore is easily my biggest disapointment ever. My first introduction to the Lufia series was number 2, so I obviously had high standards. I thought "Yes, finally a Lufia game for the Gameboy Advance, maybe they'll do what they did with Lufia II, but improve it with maybe more variety in the characters, music, towns, etc, it's sure to be a masterpiece either way."
I was dead wrong. Upon starting the game up, I knew something was terribly wrong. The characters moved at a snail's pace. I got into my first battle, atleast they still kept the monsters on screen in dungeon. WHAT!!!! The battles take 10 times longer, not only because of the enemies being stronger, but also because the battle system moves at the pace of a damn turtle. I could go on for hours on all the crap I hated about this abominable distant relative to the legendary Lufia II, but I'll sum it up by saying it sucks.

Bioshock was pretty average for me. Not a turd, but definitely not 10 perfection like some of the reviews say. Basically, it was generic FPS + powers + atmosphere = 10. The AI sucked. FEAR has way better AI. I guess if they added plasmids to Quake IV and Doom 3, then those games would have been better received. Chronicles of Riddick was much better.

Sadly, I agree with you hank, I bought bioshock, loved it at first, then by the end was like, "when is this going to end" Not a turd, but not perfection like it's made out to be.
My all time disapointment was Fable. I was really disappointed in that game. Again it wasn't a bad game, but it was no where near what it was suppose to be. I read everything about that game, was very excited and to this day it is still the only game I have ever preordered. I played it though and sold it quick.

Is that the one you had to reset the Genesis to advance past the 5th level (Mojo's world)? That was its only redeeming quality and probably among the first instances of really breaking the 4th wall or whatever they say. That game was pretty decent.
This thread is sort of hollow. It either boils down to "this game was overhyped" or "I just don't like this game."
I know everyone says "it's your opinion and blah blah" and yeah everyone is entitled to an opinion, but I still tend to think most people know quality when they see it. Like the Devil May Cry series - that was quality.
It just depends on what you are looking for out of a game. I tend to judge a game on how close it came to fulfilling the goal the designers had for it.
Devil May Cry was supposed to make the player feel like an action hero, giving control to moves that were usually reserved for cut scenes (ex. the stripper pole in the third one - not groundbreaking...just fun as hell). I think it did that and did that well, so that's not a disappointment.
God of War, same thing. It was about very visceral combat, and it acheived that through its controls, graphics, atmosphere, etc.
The medium of gaming is about taking all these tools and utilizing each of them to create a feeling. Many games are successful at this.
Some that weren't - MGS 2 (people who praise the story aren't thinking, it was a turd and made no sense), Kingdom Hearts 2 (not because it wasn't great, but because the story blew and I guess the whole novelty "OMG ITS SQUALL AND YUFFIE AND HOLY SHIT MICKEY MOUSE)" sort of wore off), and, of course, Fable. Not because Fable wasn't an OK game, it was just so...generic. People would have forgiven it if it had disappointed but still been unique. People will never forgive generic.
I prefer to think about all the pleasant surprises: what about Godhand? I bought for $11 during the CC clearance and man, aside from bad clipping on walls, I would have felt fine paying $40 for it. Criminally underrated.

The save system is the main thing that killed it for me. The rest of the game was ok, but not as good as I had hoped. I recently got a 360 and it was my most wanted game. I guess my expectations were just too high :cry:I can understand that.
I was hoping for a creepier game from the zombie side. The creeps turned out to be the scoop characters you'd have to fight (that fat policewoman and the clown come to mind). I love the game for the number of enemies onscreen at any one time. Driving and running through the tunnels, the onscreen enemies is crazy high. I still play here and there to get any of the achievements I've missed. But it didn't scare me as I was hoping it would. Still fun to play, though.
I think my biggest disappointment right now is halo 3. It's beautiful and plays perfectly aside from cortana and gravemind interrupting you every five minutes and the vehicles being scripted to be allowed in some areas but not others... at least in one and two if you managed to get a vehicle where it wasn't supposed to go, you could still use it. In halo 3, if you're in a vehicle and the designers wanted you on foot in the next section, you hit ye olde invisible wall until you get out of the vehicle. But the storytelling took a huge dive. One and Two, you'd play the game and the story unfolded. In Three, the cut scenes are... I dunno, it's like "okay here's what's going on NOW." Like what they say about a joke, if you have to explain it, it wasn't funny. In three, they keep trying to tell you what the story is and why this is important and blah blah blah, and it comes over as poorly constructed.
And Cortana writhing in agony is just absurd. She's a program/AI/OS/whatever. I get that she was scripted to be an interface, and a userfriendly interface at that. I get that she was created to have a personality. Loved her in one, she got toned down in two and she's completely absurd in three.

spiderman 2....hyped up, played basically all the way through, but once you got past the first few missions, you realize the voices are annoying, the game is shallow, and it basically feels like a tech demo of swinging spidey around
gta: sa....bought it, barely played it, really come on, you can't fix any of the broken controls to this series? so many things that were still never corrected from gta 3 in this game...plus RPG type elements? what idiot thought that was a great idea?
oh and world series baseball 2k1, um hello this game was hyped to be like the saturn/genny MLB series, you couldnt field, the game was broken, didnt feature anything that was mentioned early on that the game would include (including what was on the cd case itself), was unfinished, and yuck just terrible

Drakengard. It got some pretty mediocre reviews, but it seemed so good in theory, and I figured most reviewers were tired of the hack-and-slash genre by Dynasty Warrior: Electric Boogaloo.
Oh, how wrong I was.
As were the reviewers, actually. It is not a mediocre game. It is a horrendous game. I could rant for paragraphs about the bland graphics, the uninspired gameplay, and the laughable script-VA combo.

If it's not a turd, then why bring it up?
Because some people want to threadcrap.
Because others read the first half ("games you were excited about") and don't bother with the second.
Maybe someone ought to create a "Games you were excited about and were massively disappointed with" thread although half the posts for that are already here.
A "turd" should be something worthless, awful, and (figuratively, at least) complete shit. While there may be a person or two who likes that sort of thing, there really should be general agreement that yes, that's a steaming pile of crap.
The Wii and PSP are not turds. Halo 3 is not a turd. Gears of War is not a turd. Katamari is not a turd. You may not personally like them, but you're just showing one of two things if you declare they're turds. You're showing you can't read/understand really basic words, or that your idea of being provocative is utterly lame and pathetic.
Wiffle Ball is a turd. Shogun Empires is a turd. Elf Bowling is a turd.
Granted, those games probably don't belong in this thread either, as I can't imagine anyone excited by them. But those games are certifiable turds.
Games like PS3/360 Sonic, Bomberman Act Zero, DS Lego Star Wars II, DK Barrel Blast -- these are the kind of turds we should be talking about here.
Can we get back to some genuine crap here?

I gotta agree with blandstalker. Several pages back I wrote something similar to this; but if you thought games like Halo 3 & Gears of War were turds then consider yourself lucky.
I think most of the posts aren't meeting the criteria of both "excited about" & "complete turds." Just my observation.

Can you hear that? That's me applauding Blandstalker.
...
I still thought Landstalker sucked, though.
Just because the OP used the term "turds" doesn't mean you have to take it literally. He started off with Persona 3, which has gotten great reviews from media and fans, so that lends itself more to a thread about letdowns than actual worthless games. So how are you going to define "turd"? It is semantics.
The thread has over 200 replies and almost 5,000 views so someone must be enjoying it.
To me Katamari was a terrible game. Different? Yes. But I stopped playing after a few levels because I was bored and didn't enjoy it so to me it was a "turd", despite what anyone else says.
Because some people want to threadcrap.
To me you are the one threadcrapping here. Let the thread evolve into what others want, not what you want.

To me you are the one threadcrapping here. Let the thread evolve into what others want, not what you want.Thing is, this same exact bullshit flamebait thing is repeating a thousand times over across the internet. Once a month some poor fuck decides to compile a list of "most overrated games", which invariably turns into... well, bullshit flamebait. So for once - for once - some of us would like to keep the conversation away from that. We would like to talk about games we wanted to like, but were bad. Not "bad to us". Not "bad because I have shitty taste". Bad.
"Why," you ask, "do we have to inflict such a thread on you? If we don't like the way this thread is going, why don't we just stop reading and posting in it?"
Because this is a message board. This is a forum. We are here to talk, not to run in terror from the - say it with me - bullshit flamebait.
You want that in this thread? Wait a week, and another one just fucking like this will show up.
Now we wait for Linkin Prime to close this thread after mistaking my use of the "Shaq-Fu!" graphic for flaming...

I also hate the 3D sonic games after sonic adventure.
Why can't we just run Sonic around in scenic on-rails rollercoaster tracks and loops while avoiding cool enemies and grabbing gold rings (hardcore games could have the option to turn the rails off) I would totally buy that game no problem.
I really don't give a fuck about a side-mission involving fat cat and his lost fishy. If you really need side characters, just have a shadow bonus mission where he plays like a slightly slower Sonic with a death blossom button.

I should've read the reviews on this one before I purchased it. I was expecting NFL 2k5 style gameplay. Boy was I wrong. The game just feels extremely slow.
Dead Rising:
I had to forced myself to play through the game. But the save system and NPCs were so annoying
Loco Roco:
I just don't get the appeal or the challenge of this game
Metroid Prime, and Super Mario 64
I just don't like the new 3D nintendo games as much as I liked the old 2D ones

GTA San Andreas. I bought an Xbox just to play it, and got bored 1/3 of the way through. It was buggier than the first two, just as aggravating, and the characters were all so stupid with such awful dialogue that I wanted to see them all die.
Simpsons Hit and Run. I was looking forward to finally playing a good Simpsons game, and it started great. Then I realized the entire friggin game was like a series of training missions. And who wants to play a Simpsons game where you race cars all the time? Yeah, it had great SImpsons jokes, but the gameplay bored me to death. I think reviewers overscored it because they wanted so badly to finally like a Simpsons game.

Haha I felt the same way but never wanted to admit this because I really love the Simpsons and I thought the problem must have been me because the game scored so high. The Haloween thing was about the only thing I thought was really neat.
Yeah there were alot of problems - to be honest the new Simpsons game looks much better (actual levels!) but I'm willing to bet it has alot of the same "repetitiveness" issues.

Let me add Jaws Unleashed to the mix. I was looking forward to playing as a "Great White Shark" And when I heard it was being developed by Appaloosa of Ecco fame I figured it was gonna be a sure fire win. I was dead wrong. Unfourtunate for me I didn't read any reviews or impressions and bought it the day of release. It got really old after about 1 hour. Sure, you can chomp and munch on innocent beach-goers, but it got old fast. The missions were boring with no replay value. It could be easily beaten in 5 - 7 hours. I think I beat it the next morning.
I saw this game as a Greatest Hits a few days ago and it baffled me. Isn't a game supposed to sell a certian amount and be a semi-decent game? This was none of the above.

You mean Jaws? If so sorry, but I gotta disagree. The controls were poor, getting this guy where he needed to go wasn't fun (unike Ecco.) The camera seems like it tries it's best to be screwy. It's so bad it makes navigating through small spaces is a pain and often Jaws would get stuck in walls, pipes, etc. A few times I've had the timer run out and lose the mission just cause I was stuck. This game was poorly executed and mechanically frustrating.

Starcraft: Ghost has been effectively cast into the Development Phantom Zone, set adrift in space. That's not to say a Starcraft II shockwave couldn't shatter its prison and free it (they discuss this game specifically on a recent "GFW Radio"*, I think).
Topic-wise, it's Prey for me. Yes, Summer '06 was a desperate time for 360 owners. Real desperate. And on top of the totally insipid, knuckledragger-pandering, penalty-free 'death' mechanic, the teleportation portal puzzles were apparently designed by and for first-graders.
But hey, easy Achievement points!
P.S. Could my answer have been a console? I kid, I kid!!

Half-Life 2--I don't know if it's because it's been over-hyped or I just don't like this particular brand of dystopian storytelling (I loved Bioshock, though). It could also be because I'm playing it on the 360 for the first time, but donno...really wanted to like this game, was excited about the chance to play it, but fell flat on its face for me.
Silent Hill 3--My introduction to the Silent Hill series, and failed hard in my eyes. Super slow paced survival horror may just not be my thing.
Blitz: The League--I still play Blitz 2000 on the N64 two or three times a week with my dad, and I was hoping for a game that'd make him keen to take a new console for a spin. I turned this game on, played it for about five minutes, and then promptly deleted it from my hard drive. You don't take a BLITZ game and put in injuries.
