I need to get a new power supply but as you may know getting decent info is sketchy at best. I only need 500w and it needs to fit in my dimension 4500 case. Any suggestions?

Why do you think you need 500W? Your Dell came w/ a 250W power supply.

Here is a CoolerMaster 500W for $30 AR (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171018). It fits your request and it is a known brand as well as having an acceptable price.

Don't forget, the 4500 case does not have a cutout for the power supply switch. If you get a power supply with a switch you will need to modify your case. Just something to keep in mind.

That's really good observation and a really good point. The CoolerMaster PSU, in this case, would not fit the case according to this illustration (http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4500/replace.htm#1114028).

This HIPRO 300W (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817174026) PSU will most likely work on your Dell desktop.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. Especially the switch tip. I wouldn't have thought of that.
This video card my friend gave me for free is starting to not be so free.
