Well, if the Patriots didn't have the division locked up before...
He retired so late in the offseason that theres no one left on the market for the Dolphins to sign to replace him.

He didn't have a long career. I remember when he was in College; He was a great player then.
They are saying that drugs are may be part of the problem. Thats a damn shame if thats true.

Wow. That came out of nowhere. I feel sorry for the Dolphins since their only weapon is calling it quits.

For some reasons, when I read the subject of this thread, I thought it's Ricky Martin (the singer)... I don't know why I so want him to retire... mmm
Did Eddie George already get picked up by another team? If not he seems like the only decent back out there with some talent if the Dolphins hope to compete. Maybe Williams will be back next year on another team if this is some sort of way to weasel out of his contract.

He was doing very well for himself, he was basically hte entire miami dolphins offense. This also totally changes his fantasy football status... better go change those rankings.

My favorite Ricky Williams is now the best Ricky Williams in the NFL.(for those of you that don't know him, he plays HB for Indy and used to go to Texas Tech)

Ricky retired so he could travel and live a normal life.

thats too sad.. that was like the only Dolphin's player and star that I raelly knew. The Dolphins would need a star blockbuster contract, or they would probably end up last in their division.

Williams told the Herald his failed marijuana tests had a minor influence on his decision to retire, but was only one of many factors. It didn't cause him to retire, he said, as much as reinforce his reasons for wanting to do so.
Seems like he'd rather get high than make millions and try to win a championship in the NFL. :?

wtf? retiring already?
I thought for a second this topic read "Ricky Henderson retires!" now that would be more understandable.

Kinda what I was thinking. They both decided they werent having any fun playing so why stay? Once you have a few million in the bank its not like you exactly need more cash. (course thats assuming his drug habit is limited to pot and not that white powder stuff, in which case he would probably have stayed in football to feed the monkey)

Now you all know how we felt when Barry Sanders retired. On the plus side, at least Ricky had the decency to give the team enough time to react. Retiring on the night before training camp is just crappy.
And lest I forget...

It's gone gold already so pretty much, he's in it... expect rampant roster updates... :-)... I've already had to remove him from the Dolphins, place Eddie George on the Cowboys, and Antwan Smith on the Titans in EPSN 2K5...

i was just playing eagles vs dolphins in espn nfl2k5 and ricky had like 4 yards against me. Remember the dolphins got the shit kicked out of them last yr by the eagles and now the dolphins have the eagles backup AJ Feeley as their starting QB. I was scared with ricky i the back field and AJ being so good. Now dolphins are done. AJ will have 2 step it up even more. HAHAHA eagles rule. (#81 on the cover of nfl2k5 anyone?)

If anything the value just went up...always with memorbilia, it goes up twice in value in little tie frames, one when the athlete retires, the other when they die.

Ha. Valuable cards?
The sportscard industry has all but destroyed the value of anything save the outrageously limited (limited to 10, 100, 500, etc) chase cards.
I have a box full of early eighties baseball cards, now filled with rookie cards of guys in or getting in the hall of fame, but the book price on them is about a quarter of what it was a decade ago.
Boggs, Ripken, Eckersly, Mcgwire, Bonds, etc.
The cards are barely worth anything compared to what they used to be... and those are the best case scenarios.

This was a shocker. I just don't understand people with talent. They take it for granted. Ten years from now he'll be broke, begging for a job somewhere. What a tool.
The Heisman curse strikes again.

Yep, which is why I collect the limited edition cards, my best Ricky Williams card is signed and limited to only 100.

I was going to play for the Dolphins but I got high
We could have actually had some wins but I got high
Now everybody's gonna beat up the fins and I know why
Because I got high
Because I got high
Because I got high
Ricky should have played basketball, he'd fit right in with most of the NBA.

That's what 3-4 roster changes in the last week? Hopefully we will get one big roster update rather than several small ones.

The whole notion that Ricky retired because of the rules and regulations of the NFL, especially drug testing, is total BS. Ricky Williams suffers from a serious anxiety/panic disorder. Anyone with ANY knowledge of this problem understands how damn awful it is to live with it. It is debilitating; it is scary; it is unbelievably hard to overcome. Ricky recently stated that the hardest thing he has ever done in his life occured in June: he was actually able to get out on a dancefloor, by himself, and not worry about people staring at him, or judging him, or feeling like he was going to drop dead from a heart attack.
Ricky has stated that he doesn't give a crap about money. He was happy when he was poor and he is happy now. He has learned to control his anxiety and wants to find something more meaningful to spend his energies on; if he's poor, but he feels he is making a difference in the world, then he'll be resting easy at night. Ricky said that he was able to take the field in front of 80,000 screaming fans without feeling anxious because, "that is what people expected me to do." People with anxiety disorders are ALWAYS concerned about what other people think of them. Ricky lost the desire to play football, for football's sake, a long time ago. He is tired of running in every aspect of the word; running on the football field and running from his fears. His retirement is a statement, a manifesto in which he's saying, "It's just a damn game, man."
There is more to life than money, people, and there is certainly more to life than a career in pro football followed by ownership of, 'Ricky William's Toyota World' in Miami, Florida.
I know there are many young, bullheaded people on this board who will continue to badmouth him, or call him a pussy, or piss all over him in some other way. I am willing to bet, though, that there are others here who are well aware of what panic/anxiety disorders are, and the havoc they can unleash in a person's life. It is those people who will have absolutely no problem understanding why Ricky Williams did what he did. Enough said.
By the way, Ricky is not the first NFL running back to suffer from a paralyzing panic disorder. Houston OIlers great Earl Campbell did, as well.

Yep, there are only 6 or 7 "stud" running backs to choose from now.
