"Next month, New Medium Enterprises' 1080p set-top players, which use the HD VMD (Versatile Multilayer Disc) format, will go on sale on Amazon.com (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/pcworld/tc_pcworld/storytext/136977/24378924/SIG=10junn564/*http://Amazon.com) and in stores such as Radio Shack and Costco for around $150--about half the cost of the least-expensive 1080p HD DVD player, and perhaps a fourth the cost of the least-expensive Blu-ray player. The movies that work in them are similarly inexpensive.

"Expect a small premium over DVD [discs], and a big discount over Blu-ray and HD DVD," says Jim Cardwell, an advisor to the company and former president of Warner Home Video."

This thread is probably the full extent of publicity that this format will receive.

At launch, 20 U.S. movie titles will be available, including many from Mel Gibson's Icon Entertainment International. That's pretty sparse, and the list doesn't include that many hot titles.

Yeah, this thing's going to be a failure.

Who going to support it? None of the exclusive studios are going to jump on board and I doubt any of the neutral studios are jumping for joy about adding another HD format to their already not making them boatloads of money SKU.

There's a gazillion other HD formats out there. I'm sure not too many have heard of the FVD or whatever the hell the chinese call it. There's also another one from korea. I saw them both at this year's CES.
