Features

Set in a cyberworld, the legendary fast-paced action-shooter Rez HD, created by Tetsuya Mizuguchi, will provide the ultimate audiovisual experience as the player targets the enemies and hacks the system while creating their own beats. Rez will open your senses … let's go to synaesthesia was the watchword when Rez released in 2001 to become a fan favorite. The dynamic, total integration of visual presentation, sound and player input provides the ultimate audiovisual experience.

Legendary gaming experience: Old-school vector style graphics, sensory response, and beat synchronization sets the title apart and is perfectly recreated in this port for Xbox LIVE® Arcade in high-definition and 5.1 surround sound.
The world of Rez: Rez consists of five different levels, each with its own unique visual theme and style, musical track and a boss battle at the end. The game also features several different modes and lots of unlockable elements, giving it plenty of replay value.
Game modes: Play through the five areas in regular or Score Attack mode. Go to the Beyond mode and try Direct Assault, Lost Mode, the free play Trance Mission, or take on all the bosses consecutively in Boss Rush.
Feel the rhythm: To further enhance the Rez experience, artists including Coldcut, Adam Freeland, Joujouka, Ken Ishii and Keiichi Sugiyama (SEGA's Wave Master) contributed tracks to the game.

That's pretty awesome. Considering I've wanted to play Rez and Ikaruga forever, but didn't feel like paying $70 bucks for ’em, the probability that they'll come in at 800 ~ 1200 points each is pretty nice.

Sheesh, with Sin and Punishment hitting the VC, I'm going to be drowning in quality shooters all of a sudden.

Oh, and is it just me, or does Itagaki make it sound like Ninja Gaiden 2 is (at least temporarily) at 360 exclusive?

peteloaf

According to the description of Ninja Gaiden II on the XBLM video it is an exclusive.

It is apparently. The video is on XBL, though I didn't DL it yet.

nice! Will pick up Rez, Ikaruga and EEE all on day 1. I really need to get the 120gb hdd because I am running out of room. I know I could just delete some demos and videos, but I like keeping them on there. The videos to show off on my TV, and the demos to mess around with on games I just want to get a quick fix for. Then of course the downloadable content for games like Gears, GRAW and R6 arent helping also because they are like 500+mbs. Then of course all these good arcade games already out and coming out.

Wow. Definitely will be picking up Trigger Heart and Rez whenever they are released. I already have Ikaruga for GC, so I am going to skip on that.

If MS keeps releasing XBL titles like these, I might have to upgrade my HD.

Every Extend Extra Extreme, Ikaruga, Trigger Heart Exelica, and Exit are all actually old news, and Rez has been a rumor forever[i], but <3 <3 <3 now that it's finally confirmed.

Also, one of the biggest things, for me, that they confirmed at that evert is that, holy shit, [i]Mobile Ops: The One Year War is still coming out!! Soon, even! I know they never even hinted at canceling it or anything, but the extended silence made me really nervous. Anyways, awesome, because that's been one of the Xbox 360 games I've been most looking forward to ever since they announced it over two years ago.

Also, I could only force myself to skim that Kotaku article, because the writing is just so godawful. God I hate Kotaku. :[

"Fear is the mind killa". chuckles. ;-)

Personally I'd like a sequel to "Rez" released exclusively on XBLA. It would be the perfect low budget, high profile, low sale cultish game that would sell perfectly under the XBLA delivery system.
Now I'm just wondering where is my "Guardian Heroes" with multiplayer?! Specifically 6 player. I think that's what the Saturn version could hook up to right?

Overpaying?

Most of these are improved (either/and visuals, online, sound) from the originals.

And most games "that came out over 10 years ago" are only 400 points (5 dollars)

Uh, Mortal Kombat didn't just start sucking because of anything in regards to XBLA. It's been sucking non-stop for 15 years now.

On XBLA, you can get Gauntlet with online co-op for $5. This is officially the greatest thing of all time. Just because Mortal Kombat is still the same herky-jerky mess it's always been isn't really reason to dismiss how awesome XBLA (and the other downloadable game services on Wii and PS3, though Wii VC is sorta lame so far, because none of the games add any functionality whatsoever, really) are.

The kind who aren't going to shell out $40 for Rez or Ikaruga, used, at GameStop and would prefer to shell out $5 to $15 for the games digitally downloaded onto their console, complete with achievements and possibilities of online multiplayer.

Yes, we're cheap. But we're not totally fucking anal about it where we believe everything old should be free. Hell, one of these games hasn't even been brought over to the US before.

On another note, it's nice to see some games that were once on the Dreamcast (despite a couple being in arcade first) coming to XBLA.

my only question is how much for rez and ikaruga?

Top dollar is worth it for Ikaruga. The most they could charge is probably a quarter what it's worth new & sealed on the Gamecube. It's worth even more on the Dreamcast.

Only thing is that Ikaruga has been "coming soon" for ages. Anytime they announce a game for XBLA, I don't let myself get excited. It's always be 6-18+ months before any of this shit gets out of Microsoft's speedy certification process. Freakin' Castle Crashers is probably going to wind up being release on the Xbox 360 2.

And it doesn't bother you to buy something that has absolutely 0 resale value?

Since alot of people have points built up (twister contest, smarter child, CC B1G1F) paying 400-800 points for a great game isn't a big deal at all. Hell when I heard ikaruga was coming out this past march I sold my ikaruga for $40 figuring I can get it for $5-$10 again in 6 months to a year. Expect alot of people who aren't collectors to do the same with Rez now. Some of us just want to have the game to play and don't care about the actual disk if the price is right. Granted digital still sucks and I don't think I would pay more then 800 pts...

To be honest, I have enjoyed Xbox Live Arcade a great deal. I think a lot of the older titles should be 200 instead of 400 points and 400 instead of 800 points, more robust games like Castlevania: SOTN, Prince of Persia Classic, and Rez are acceptable as 800 point downloads IMO.

I hear ya. I'm sitting at 41 XBLA games right now. The CC point card sale certainly helped, the purchases are low cost and easy to justify (i.e. splurge), and the consistency of which they're bringing out high quality titles doesn't hurt.

On topic, every single one of these games will be a day one purchase for me. I love Ikaruga, though all I've got is a burned Dreamcast version (Shh!) and I'd really like to be able to finally own the real thing for a reasonable price. Now if Rez would only support the Japanese pulsating USB hardware...

Yeah, seriously. Rez would suck with any of that music. It just wouldn't gel at all. Jeez, Apossum, do you think they should have updated the PSP port of Parappa the Rapper with the latest in underground hip-hop as well?

Well part of it is I don't know if I can't trust that stuff not to be Generic Trance crap, the kind Tranceheads like but that still sounds the same to me. I think the music of "Rez" connects with most, if not all, that play it. I don't know if the same could be said for most people with Trance.

I use to have Ikaruga on GC and always felt the game is meh. REZ is cool, but I already own it on PS2.

These games will please the hardcore gamer, but they won't help the 360 at all in Japan.

I could see several people buying these games again just to inflate their gamer score trying to prove who doesn't get out much.

I use to have Ikaruga on GC and always felt the game is meh. REZ is cool, but I already own it on PS2.

These games will please the hardcore gamer, but they won't help the 360 at all in Japan.

The Japanese love their shooters, so who knows. And to say that it won't help the 360 at all is simply laughable. It's not a question of if it'll help, but how much will it help?

Personally, I think it'll help ever so slightly, but not enough to suddenly get them second place from the PS3.

OXM has posted impressions along with some small pics:
http://oxmonline.com/files/u9/area2_a.jpg http://oxmonline.com/files/u9/area3_a.jpg

http://oxmonline.com/files/u9/area2_b.jpg http://oxmonline.com/files/u9/area3_b.jpg

We’ve known this one has been coming for a while, but we finally got a chance to get all up-close-and-personal with a very near-final version of XBLA’s Rez HD, a retooling of the visually experimental Dreamcast shooter. The “HD” in the title points to the fact that co-developers Q Entertainment and Hexadrive have, in fact, rezzed up (har) the original with new visual effects, as well as modernized the graphics and sound to accommodate the hi-def demands of 360 gamers. The result, thus far, is a faithfully tripadelic redux of the fast-paced arcade shooter, only with more cowbell.
But what if you never had the chance to play the original on your Japanese Dreamcast or U.S. PlayStation 2? Well, never fear — as hardcore as the game may look and seem, Rez HD’s gameplay really can’t be much more simple or basic. In fact, if you’ve ever played an arcade-style 2D shooter, you’re already two-thirds of the way there.

With the A button held down, you’ll enable your reticle — controlled with the left analog stick — to lock onto up to seven different objects. Once you release the A button, you’ll fire off lasers to destroy the highlighted targets. You can lock onto the same enemy object multiple times if it’s particularly tough — and you’ll have to do this in each of the game’s level-ending boss face-offs. Along the way, you can collect power-ups that enable a smart bomb–like screen-clearing explosion, or that gas up a meter that helps your character “evolve” into higher forms…like a throbbing green nucleus. But take a hit from an enemy and you’ll get kicked back down the evolutionary scale.

All of this sounds like so much fodder for every shooter that has clawed its way into old-school existence, but Rez’s special sprinkling of pixie dust is in its presentation and simplified ambition. Like much of Q’s past work (Lumines Live!, E4, Space Channel 5), Rez combines music and graphics to be much more than just shooting crap on a screen — there’s a definite attempt to elevate the experience to something more transcendent. The beats, bleeps, and blips in the game’s ambient, trance-skewed soundtrack correspond directly with the gameplay. Lock on to multiple enemies at once and you’ve just strung together a series of hi-hat riffs. Fire off those lasers and you’ve got a bassy string of squeaks. And let's not forget Rez HD’s pulsating backdrops and technicolor paint job. The better you do, the more elaborate the landscape becomes — keep excelling, and subtle differences in the stage reveal themselves to you. The whole affair raises the shooter experience to more of a mind-altering trip than anything — and luckily, it's done without veering too far into Space Giraffe territory. Sure, there’s plenty of visual over-stimulation going on, but you’ll never be confused or lost.

What the devs have added for this XBLA upgrade — aside from 5.1 digital sound and enhanced, retooled graphics — is minor at best. A leaderboard option is open to high-score addicts who go into Score Attack mode for pure point-nabbing pleasure. You’ll also be able to play Rez HD in its original resolution. But really, from what we’ve played of the game so far in its XBLA incarnation, Rez HD is more about recapturing an experience that many of us may have missed the first time out. We know we’ll be ready to download it onto our 360s come late January.

Confirmed to be 800pts and be relased in the next few weeks:
Q Entertainment just shot an email out to our iron-fisted rulers at Joystiq (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/08/rez-hd-arriving-this-month-for-800-msp/) to tell everyone that Rez HD will release to the Xbox Live Arcade in "only a few weeks" and that it'll be priced at a soothing 800 Microsoft points.

Q also sent some new in-game screenshots which show off its trippy visuals (we've added them to the recently created (http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/01/08/xbla-screeny-blowout-rez-tron-and-poker-smash/) gallery (http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/photos/rez-xbla/)) and confirmed that Rez HD will sport updated 5.1 audio, new visuals and a Replay Theater to further induce brain seizures. Joystiq also confirmed (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/07/rez-hd-extra-controllers-double-as-trance-vibrators-seriously/) that Rez HD on the 360 will feature its own version of the infamous PS2 Trance Vibrator (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rez#Trance_Vibrator) where you'll have the option to enable rumble on three additional Xbox 360 controllers, place them wherever you choose (http://www.gamegirladvance.com/archives/2002/10/26/sex_in_games_rezvibrator.html) and let the Rez vibrating bliss ensue. And yes, we're afraid to see how people will use that "feature"

Anyway, got it this morning and played a bit before I had to leave for school. They did a great job with it. The game looks awesome on my HDTV, and the 5.1 sound is awesome. As soon as I get home I'm going to try it with the extra controllers for the transvibrator feel. I'm still going to keep my PS2 version, since I want to have a hard copy, but this is the best version of the game.

I DON'T have an HDTV.
I DO, however, have a sweet surround sound system.

Think it's still worth buying if I already have the PS2 version? I was gonna just blow this off since I wouldn't be able to take advantage of the HD, but playing this with surround sound is kinda enticing...

So the advantages over PS2 would be sourround sound, vibrator, achievements... anything else?

I tried shooting everything.. letting it regenerate..shoot..etc. I killed it at 145k. The boss seems to give you 10k. Hope that helps a bit.

Tips for score attack in general:
*Use MAX combos, they provide more points.
*Stall on the boss, they have excess pieces that you can shoot for points.
*Don't worry about shooting everything down, I shot everything down in Area one, and without stalling the boss, and I just barely made it over 150k. Stalling the boss is the key to a higher score.
*Although you shouldn't concentrate on shooting everything down, DO aim for over 95% cleared because it gives you a harder boss(There are 3 forms, something, Giga, Tera. You see it in [] after the bosses name, such as EARTH[Tera]). The Tera boss gives 20,000 points instead of 10,000 points.

This game is quite a trip, but I'm getting my ass kicked. I can't even beat the second level boss ... I got pretty close after about four tries but I can't seem to not get hit during the level getting up to the boss.

Any tips?

I'm in the same boat. Actually, I've only played the level twice, but I barely last 15 seconds against the boss. The first time, I barely started, and it was over. I think I lasted 10 seconds the second time.

Seriously? Just prioritize the bosses attacks on you, and then go after the boss himself.
And don't forget about your overdrive.

Rez really is quite the experience. Stage 5 was so enchanting, and even though I didn't get to play Rez "FOR REAL" on dreamcast, The game's feel is so fitting to the system. Amazing originality, a fresh approach to an old idea... it's like the Jetset Radio of Shooters, heh.

REMEMBER, people having problems with score attack, YOU CAN WATCH OTHER'S REPLAYS! I love this feature in Rez and Omega 5, it really is wonderful to see how the best players go at score-centric games like this.

Man, this makes me want more shooters on XBLA... Ikaruga and Triggerheart Excelica can't come fast enough... (And maybe that Raiden collection...)

The Demo really isn't as exciting as the full game (duh), but you get the gist of it. Rez, gameplay wise, is strongly about trying to perfect your run through the stages, getting all the items, killing every enemy, and doing everything the stage offers you.

Beyond Gameplay, it's about a combination of the pace and flow of the images and music. The game attempts to bring all methods of interation with it (through sound, visuals, rythm, etc) into one coherent experience, and general concensus is that it accomplishes this better than just about anything out there.

For me, Stage 5 and the bonus features are just as great as, say, Portal. Rez is one of the rare Xbox Live games that was made as a full console release that's now being offered for an exceedingly low price. It encourages and rewards multiple play throughs, too. (More Xbox Live Arcade games need to reward you like this.)

If you open your mind to it, you should be able to appreciate it.

To those having troubles in stage 2 boss:
*Know that you can lock on to multiple enemies at once, up to 8. Use this on the first part of the fight where he shoots the missiles.
*Know that you can use rapid fire by tapping the button. I find this to be effective(and the only way I can survive) when he has those branches out.
*If the boss is really too hard for you, know that the boss difficulty is dependent on how many enemies you kill in the level. Loosen up, and the boss will be easier.

Just curious, by loosening up, do you mean killing more or less enemies in the level?

I knew most of the stuff, I think my problem was that I wasn't doing that good in the level, so I didn't have much by the time I got to the final boss. I got to him yesterday, and actually cruised on him (wondering why I was having such a problem before).

I have played through the tutorial mode, so I knew about locking on up to 8 (or is it 9 when it says max) enemies.

Now, onto level 3 (haven't tried it yet).

There are 5 forms, and the last form has 5 phases. :D

It took me three tries to beat that boss for the first time. Just keep shooting. Go defensive and take your time. Learn to use your lock ons to take out groups more easily (helps when you get to score attack and the beyond modes). Use your overdrives fairly liberally; the first four phases all drop 3 power ups, so you can pick up some more as you go. You can also get some more power ups in the last phase by blasting the larger diamond-shaped ships that start to pop up.

I actually found the game easier by rapid firing instead of multiple locking, although I'm not sure thats the spirit in which the game is intended to be played. It did give the songs a kind of samba beat though.

I find that when you multiple lock you can get hit by things before you've finished firing.

Aye, the first time I went through the game, I used alot of rapid shooting. I did learn by looking through replay videos, though, that locking on (especially to max) nets more score in score attack.

Kinda makes it's own difficulty that way: Playing in a more risky style nets more score.

Tip for "safe" lock-ons: Lock onto what's obviously going to hit you first, then start searching for other things to lock onto. Only release the lock-on when the "primary" lock is right about to hit you. This way, you can stay defended, and still optimize lock-ons.

You get the achievement for doing it on all 5 stages, and I believe it unlocks Boss Rush in beyond mode. Every achievement seems to unlock something else in the game, which is quite spiffy.

I need to go finish the direct assault trance achievement (is this the last unlock under direct assault?), which will get me at least close to the 10 hour playtime achievement. Then I just need to play score attack about 20 more times, and I'm set!

I got it on my first try, I'm not sure on my shot down %. I think I was around 240k before the boss and I just spent a lot of time at the end. Never attack the boss directly, shoot everything around it and eventually it will sort of time out and kill itself.

Tip: Use your overdrives. You only need about 2 to make sure you don't get hit in the last boss, and you get maybe 1~2 overdrives during the boss rush. If you need, bring in 4 overdrives from other levels. Knowing when to use those overdrives is the key, but also be aware that it shoots slightly slower than your own shots because it's single shots, and the enemies it hits may not necessarily be the ones about to go off screen.

Bringing in over drives is a good idea.

I never use them on the boss since I'm good enough that it never hits me (or hits me once, if I'm being careless).
There are a few parts where I could take advantage of extras though (like the big ship thing that deploys legions of small enemies).

Do the enemies the final iteration of the boss shoot out count towards the percent shot down?

insertcleverthing
02-17-2008, 07:08 PM
No, only the actual boss counts toward shot down percentage. The floating diamonds that shoot missles at you and the missles that spray out of the core don't matter at all.

Also make sure you're killing the giant tower that sprays out missles / guys somewhere towards the middle of the level as well as those big winged things toward the end of the level. Just remember where overdrives are helpful (there are like two obligatory spots I can think of) and you should be fine. You can always find youtube walkthroughs if you're really stuck.

Getting 95% was much easier than getting 300k in score attack for me. Maxamizing your chains and abusing the final boss battle timer are much more important than shot down percentage.
