From Xbox.com:

An epic RPG from tri-Ace, developer of Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile, and Microsoft Game Studios, Infinite Undiscovery™ was first presented at the 2006 Tokyo Game Show, and represents the culmination of 10 years of ideas from producer and designer Yoshiharu Gotanda.
The exclusive power of Xbox 360™ brings to life a world that changes in real time, allowing players to make their own choices that will result in numerous "unknown discoveries." Experience a grand story set in an ultimate fantasy world overflowing with detail and realism, delivering a true role-playing experience.

An infinite world. Infinite possibilities. Infinite Undiscovery.

From square-enix.com:

INFINITE UNDISCOVERY is Unchained on Xbox 360: September 2, 2008
Los Angeles (May 21, 2008)

Square Enix, Inc., the publisher of Square Enix™ interactive entertainment products in North America, announced today that INFINITE UNDISCOVERY™ for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft will ship September 2, 2008. The first in a completely new lineup of Square Enix titles for Xbox 360, this fantasy RPG (role-playing game) is a collaborative project with fan favorite development studio tri-Ace Inc. (STAR OCEAN® and VALKYRIE PROFILE®).

“With the simultaneous release of INFINITE UNDISCOVERY, Square Enix is entering an exciting new period of delivering great gaming experiences to our fans all around the world at the same time, creating new global communities,” said John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix, Inc. and Square Enix, Ltd. “This is something that we have aimed to do for a long time and we look to continue to deliver worldwide gaming experiences across all platforms well into the future.”

INFINITE UNDISCOVERY envelops players in an engaging real-time world where every decision you make leads to a myriad of discoveries and affects every encounter. The developers that set a new standard for RPGs by fusing exploration with battle in the STAR OCEAN series establish a new benchmark for the genre, perfectly integrating traditional tri-Ace elements with the technological power of Xbox 360. The experience is enhanced with a soundtrack by composer Motoi Sakuraba from the STAR OCEAN and VALKYRIE PROFILE series.

GAMEPLAY: DISCOVERY & IMPACT
Every discovery and action that players make has an instant impact on the world, creating an unpredictable gaming experience.

Situational Battles
As players are faced with a variety of episodic situational battles, they will discover that they may have to try various methods to defeat the enemy, where the most obvious solution is rarely the right move. Players can assemble parties from a pool of 18 characters, choosing those with the best combination of abilities for the job. Snipe distant enemies with the help of a bow-wielding ally or skilled magic user. Based on each player’s decisions, the intricate environments will offer a variety of experiences, presented in a way never before seen in RPGs.

A Seamless World and Real-time Action
Players are drawn deeper into the world as each act becomes more crucial to survival. To make careful decisions and advance, players will need to rely not only on sight and sound, but also scent. Combat, exploration and other actions will all take place within the same environment, seamlessly shifting between each game facet.

STORY
Known as the throne of the gods, the moon rested peacefully in the heavens. Man enjoyed great prosperity by harnessing the power of the celestial body.

Until one day...
A sinister force ensnared the moon with chains and fastened them to the surface, bleeding the life from the planet. The enchained lands were transformed into withering wastelands, and their once carefree inhabitants now lived in fear. Behind the world's plight were the Dreadknight and his menacing horde, the Order of Chains.

Deep in a forest, in one of the Order's prisons, a young boy named Capell was being held captive. His captors called him the "Liberator," though he had no clue as to what they meant. On the third day of his imprisonment, he was rescued by a spirited young woman named Aya. She was a member of a small band of brave warriors who had gathered under the banner of Sigmund the Liberator to free the world from the iron grip of the Order.

Upon meeting Sigmund, he was surprised to find a man who shared his very face and appearance. This meeting would change Capell's life forever and shake the foundation of the world itself.

Hopefully MS's capital will be the only thing invested. Past that they should keep their mouth's shut, at least the American division people and perhaps the Blinx one's. Past that those other people can make comments.

Apologies for bumping this old thread, but I didn't see the point in making a new thread to pass on the info when I don't have a 360 anymore.

Been keeping an eye on this game, and IGN has confirmed that SquareEnix has dated this game for a September 2nd, 2008 release. Yes, this year. Pretty interesting news.

SO3 was fantastic and now a September release is making me excited for IU. I'm all for action RPGs

Edit: WOW! That 2nd trailer looked amazing! The lip syncing was pretty bad, but the combat and the graphics were superb. I cannot wait! I haven't played an action RPG in a long time. The last one was Tales of the Abyss and my god that was terrible! I couldn't get past the annoying main character,

This game looks generic in every way.

As long as the voice acting can be turned off I don't care, I don't take my console RPGs any more seriously than other games.

Looks generic maybe, but the developer is claiming that in-game decisions actually affect the world at large (with infinite possibilities). If that claim is true, the game should be pretty fresh.

Overall though, Last Remnant, Lost Odyssey, White Knight Story and Enchanted Arms all share that dull HD-RPG skin to me. This game seems like it's going to fall victim as well.

Interview from a couple days ago:

Infinite Undiscovery Producer Interview (X360)
Producer Hajime Kojima explains what we will be discovering in Infinite Undiscovery.
By Gerald Villoria (http://feedback.gamespy.com/) | June 17, 2008

Square Enix is easily the most prolific role-playing game publisher in the business, and recently it teamed up with Microsoft to bring a handful of original RPGs to the Xbox 360. Developed by tri-Ace, Infinite Undiscovery (http://xbox360.gamespy.com/xbox-360/square-enix-tri-ace-shooter/) is an Xbox 360-exclusive set to be released worldwide this September. We had the opportunity to sit down with Square Enix producer Hajime Kojima to discover more about what's in store.

http://media.gamespy.com/columns/image/line.gif

GameSpy: Can you tell us about the origin of the name "Infinite Undiscovery" and what it means?Hajime Kojima, Producer: We realize that "undiscovery" is a made-up word. (laughs) It's not that you can't discover anything, but there are many things that remain undiscovered in the game. GameSpy: One of the main premises behind the game is that the main character is supposed to be the spitting image of a famous hero in the game world. Are you eventually going to have a party with two identical characters fighting side-by-side?Hajime Kojima: Yes, there will be two characters that look alike together in the game. While we can't reveal too much at the moment, it won't be two identical people. GameSpy: So one will have a flute, and the other a giant sword?Hajime Kojima: (laughs) Well, the main character is a flute player, but he's actually pretty good with a sword as well. GameSpy: There's a flute magic system for the main character, Capell, correct?Hajime Kojima: There's a variety of ways to use the flute, yes. He can play it to get the enemy's attention. Or you can use it to block magic attacks. A third way to use it would be to play the flute, and if there's a wall before the players that blocks the way ahead, it can be an illusion, and playing the flute will dispel the illusion, clearing the way. GameSpy: So tell us more about the "discovery" in the game.Hajime Kojima: As we showed you in the demonstration earlier, there are many examples of interactive objects that can be used in the game like the barrels that you blow up to defeat the ogre. GameSpy: Can you move and shoot at the same time?Hajime Kojima: When you want to shoot, you engage in Connect-action mode. You can only stand still and aim at objects. GameSpy: What is the bar on the side of the screen that looks like a sword?Hajime Kojima: That's the AP gauge. It measures when you attack a heavy enemy, and how much you lift it off the ground. GameSpy: One of the core concepts of the game is the Situation Battle, and we've seen a few where you have to run away from the enemy and complete the encounter by working with the environment. Are most situation battles going to be about running away from a strong foe?Hajime Kojima: Not all situation battles are about running away from enemies. The demos we showed did focus on running, but there are definitely situation battles where you have to fight. One example is a battle where you're fighting a monster, but during the fight you have to avoid tornadoes as they move across the battlefield.

Bestbuy has the Metallic packaging for infinite undiscovery. I'm wondering if they have the code in a preorder box as well like the Lost Oddesy one they had.

I'll check and report back later today.

I wasn't going to get either game and now because of these limited editions im thinking about it. I think i'll place a pre-order at Gamestop and if it ends up being to common I can always just cancel it and move it to something else.

By the way i've only seen Japanese voice acting. Other then the special moves voiced I haven't heard the english voice acting.

Can anyone link?

Call me a sucker. Especially since I have to many games to play already but I just pre-ordered Infinite Undiscovery from Best Buy.

That exclusive limited edition metallic case, that looks to have a decent chance at being limited since it's exclusive to Best Buy, and the fact that i'm a pretty big Tri ace fan... I just couldnt resist.

Valkyrie profile, and Star Ocean are amazing games that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Anyone have any guess's on how they're going to fit some Valkyrie Profile characters in here, becuase you know they will, since they always do. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tri-Ace#Recurring_characters)

With a reputation like Tri Ace has with RPG's I think I owe it to them to get this first day since I got all their other games used and have loved all of them i've played.

As you might already know, IGN gave the game a decent, but possibly disappointing 7.1 score.

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/902/902768p1.html

Always take these things w/a grain of salt of course, but Smart Girl's Book Club got a 7.3 in comparison.

I'm going to be so broke come next week. I'm finally going to pull the trigger on Lost Odyssey with the recent price drop at WM. Then there's Infinite Undiscovery. I'm kind of iffy on Vesperia, since I didn't really enjoy the battles in the demo. Even with the auto-control off, it seemed like I had no control over the characters. I haven't even picked up Eternal Sonata yet.

j.elles
09-01-2008, 01:57 PM
Vesperia demo did put you in a bad place for a demo. If you're not use to tales, or it's been a while you probably were confused by the battle system.

Infinite Undiscovery is reminding me so much of stuff like Secret of Mana though that I have to try it. Plus i've heard that multiple difficulty modes, bonus dungeon, and multiple endings have been confirmed on a nother board. I'm not sure if it's actual ending, or just ending with different charecters or something but it's enough for me.

09-01-2008, 02:12 PM
I've been waiting on 3 games before making a decision. Infinite Undiscovery, Tales, and Mercs 2. I rented Tales, and as much as I really wanted to I just didn't "get it". (I guess I'm just pants on head retarded)

Mercs 2 looks great, but since I actually had forgotten it was EA, I'm waiting on a used copy. I feel it's somewhat of a moral choice. :)

Now Infinite Undiscovery looks interesting. Yeah yeah I know, reviews. Well I think IGN gave it one point lower than ToV, 1up seems to have liked it. I'm wondering if the combat is somewhat like Kingdom Hearts, anyone know?

If you likes tales then yeah it's pretty much decieded. The increased gore factor in this game combined with it's battle meachanic means more people should at least rent this though.

If this game does it well hopefully well see Action RPG's adopt a lot of mechanics from this game.

Anyway, I'm off to get that metallic cover from Best Buy myself.

Anyway the review form 1up is a B in case no one knows.

gunm

Only 4 published reviews out so far, and the game is averaging a 69 on metacritic as a result. The mixed reviews seem make this title more of a rental unless you are a big fan of JRPGs. Wonder if a demo will be be released this week?

j.elles
09-02-2008, 05:04 PM
Don't trust metacritic man. I don't want this to devolve into a gamefaqs thread where everyone jumps up and down at each low and high review.

gunm
09-02-2008, 05:13 PM
Always take reviews with a grain of salt, but metacritic just averages the review scores across a number of game sites, so no need to single it out or try to steer this thread into somewhere it's not really going at the moment. The fact is, there are people who are interested in the game, but are on the fence for any number of reasons and simply want to see what others are saying about the game. I know those of you who are tri-Ace or JRPG fans will probably pick this up regardless, so the review links are not for you.

That's because while it is not without redeeming qualities, Lost Odyssey plays like a Playstation 1 RPG.

I said that territory not trolling specifically. Anyway comments about how a game plays just like a PS1 game is getting close to that territory.

Regardless you are entitled to your opinion. It's just that in my, and many peoples opinion across a lot of podcasts, and message boards like Evil Avatar for example, it's one of the best JRPG's that has been made.

Anyway I like JRPG's. Have since the SNES. And I don't see why genres need to be fused together all the time. As much as I love new stuff like The World Ends With You and The Witcher that try new things for the combat and overall mechanics me and a lot of people love the classical stuff just as much.

Alright, that's enough jelles. Ironically, the more you respond to the contrary opinions, the more you're taking this thread OT.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so unfortunately, you're gonna have to put up with the people that will have less than positive things to say. willardhaven was not canning IU or LO--in fact, I agree with him that 7.8 is a fine score for a game. I myself enjoy LO and will probably pick up IU down the line, when the price inevitably drops.

Thanks for your understanding.

Edit: BTW, jelles, or anyone else who owns the game, I'd love to see your game impressions or reviews posted. Let's keep this thread going on a positive note.

Fighting is fairly straightforward with only 2 attacks (regular and strong). Camera is a little slow, but you can make it faster. Real time everything. Even if you bring up the menu, you can still get attacked. Graphics are dark so far, hard to really tell how good they are. Already found some armor. First level is not hard, but learn to shoot fast.

Seems like it could be good in the long run, if you like action RPGs with characters that stole their wardrobe from Kingdom Hearts. I won't have time to play it much more cuz I gotta go out of town. I hope I pick it back up when I get back though. Has potential.

You really have no other Best Buy's near you.

If you're willing to pay me a little extra for gas and shipping then i'll get it for you and mail it to you. Just PM me.

I have 3 best buys near me -_-V NONE got the metallic edition, all regular.

Thanks, but its not a big deal. Girlfriend got one from crapstop for me, got that art card with it lol. So Im not worried.

Maybe later on down the line someone will sell me the case or want to swap cases with me for an extra fee if I paid them :)

Those who are missing the metallic edition at Best Buy, are you sure it's not there? The metallic-ness is very subtle. They are supposed to have a minimum of 10 per store according to the ad. Mine had tons for some reason (and that's all they had, no regulars).

I don't even know what to think about that ... I thought Mack and Cooke from LO were bad enough, but the two kids at the start ...

...I'm trading this in tomorrow. No, but please tell me that's a one time thing.

To the guy wanting the foil cover, are you sure? Cause I only went to one Best Buy and they had 50+ copies and all of them had foil covers as far as I could tell. I didn't think any Best Buys would be getting any non foil covers for a while.

Gf ended up finding me a metallic copy. Dunno how, didnt ask.

Its fun, Im only thru after the prison, but its pretty cool. A bit hard to get used to, you are SLAMMED with stuff at the start.

My 360 is red ringed. The place I sent it to is here in Texas though so shipment only takes a day. So It should hopefully get it back in another 2 weeks or so.

So I won't be able to play this or Tales of Versperia until it gets back. I was on near the last mission of Operation Darkness too. Cursed red rings of death.

For whatever reason, my console won't play Vesperia (only game to ever give me problems, all others still work fine)....so I'm interested in IU again.

The gameplay looks like Kingdom Hearts, can anyone confirm?

Man, why is the text in this game so damn small? I can't read crap, and my eyes are perfectly fine. It pretty much limits how much I can play the game. I also had to just ignore all of the information I was being given in the beginning about battles and stuff because it was too difficult to read.

Are you playing on a SDTV, or an HDTV?

Must be a SDTV because I can read the text perfectly fine.

Yeah, SDTV. If anyone knows a way to fix the issue, please let me know. Thanks.

This is a problem with PS3, and 360 it seems with a number of games. Get an HD TV seems to be the only solution.

Alright, so I've been playing IU for about 18 hours so far, and there are a couple of questionable design choices in the game, but for the most part I've been able to deal with them. Not anymore. It's absolutely inexcusable that there are enemies I CAN'T ATTACK and have to rely on my retarded AI to deal with. Seriously, I can't even use items without going into the camp menu and I can't cast any healing magic, so what's the point? Why am I playing an action RPG where I can't do anything?

I don't have much hope for this game's replayability. In fact, I'm not sure if I can finish the game if I have to fight these guys for the rest of it.

I'm only 3 hours in now but I like it a lot. There's places where it's really odd that they don't have voice acting. That's the biggest problem I have with it so far. Text on screen and no voice at moments where it really feels strange.

The Connect system is fine with me. I kind of wish you could jump to another player though instead of giving orders but i'm already getting the hang of it.

I really like the stealth system and sneaking up on people for extra damage, experience, and stuff. I also like how you get experience differently depending on how you attack.

my brain just stopped working. If someone can tell me how to get back to Kolton (if you haven't gotten to Disc 2 and traversed the Cabasna Timberlands yet, no click spoiler tag.)

after I get the medicine to save Ed. I just cannot remember how to get there. Do I go back to the castle? Where do I go from the castle if so? Or is there an exit in the cabasna timberlands?

Thanks!

By castle, do you mean Halgita? Yeah, you can go back to Halgita, then head north to a T, west to a T, and then I think the first left turn (to the west) will take you back to Kolton. If you walk down a windy cave thing, you're going the right way. Also, you can access the map from camp if you're really lost.

...I just finished the game. The ending was kind of unfulfilling, and I guess the rest of the story is unlocked at higher difficulties. I think I'll just youtube it instead of replaying.

When you start a game in normal mode, it says "most content is available," which I think means cutscenes at the end. I don't think anyone's confirmed any differences between normal and hard modes yet though, so who knows, maybe it was all a lie.

Finally got to sit down and play this one. It's a LOT of fun! The game is fun and it 'flows' real well. I'm only an hour and a half into it. Just got the two gremlins in my party. Graphics, gameplay, story....all good.

Yes, the non-voiced cut scenes are lame and the lack of save points is frustrating. But, they don't ruin the game by any means.

Heck, even Adam Sessler on X-Play gave this 4 out of 5 stars and he HATES rpg's. I'm very happy I purchased this.

I've enjoyed it so far, and I'm just to the point where the little creepster kids are in the party. Other than the bloody Ogre being a pain in the last TWO sections (I don't really know if I can kill it, but I run anyway) it's been fairly fun. I wasn't a fan of Lost Odyssey (there were parts that were fun, but the middle intermediate enemies got too difficult and annoying to make it fun). Haven't played Tales yet, but I suppose I'll pick it up sometime.

I'm just amazed how few RPGs we've got this generation. These big monstrous machines are perfect for RPGs, and yet we're getting more of the same nonsense in a new skin... Very disappointing so far... but I'm hopeful there are many more on the horizon for 2009. :)

Playing it right now as you can tell, on my nice 60 inch 1080p set as well. So here's some more detailed impressions.

Graphically it isn't great. But it does have it's moments where it looks really good. They are later on in the game though.

One great side is you can have that should be mentioned is that you can have 16 players on screen at once sometimes.
4 parties of 4 running around helping each other and casting spells. This game as you get deeper into it feels a lot like an ARPG mixed with an MMORPG. Much better combat system then FF 12 I can say that.

I really like the flute and the spells it can basically cast. Makes you main character sort of like a Bard. You can dispell certain things and effects, detect hidden chests, and give party boosts with it. Plus it has a tales of, or MMO style crafting, enchanting, blacksmithing, cooking, etc... element to it.

You can level up you're character as well as most spells, and all attack skills individually as you use them specifically as well. The combos also aren't really like they are in say a fighting game. A is fast attack, B is Power attack. But A+B can lift an enemy into the air, A+A+B is a downward strike that can knock an enemy into the ground, and A+A+A+B is sort of like a weaker version of links spin attack. Left trigger also dodges. Best console japanese action RPG i've played as far as battle mechanic goes.

Overall i'd recomend a rental to anyone, and keep in mind the first couple hours consist of running away, and a slow dungeon so it's sort of boring until you get past the tutorial sections of the game.

X-plays review of it is pretty accurate actually. (http://www.g4tv.com/xplay/reviews/1831/Infinite_Undiscovery.html)

Just picked up this game.

Not sure who photoshopped the screen shots for this game, but they did an amazing job because the actual game looks nothing like the screen shots.
Only got through the first area, and controls are clunky, and I find it ridiculous how slow some of the connect actions take, especially when you're being attacked by enemies. Makes it almost pointless to try and use them.

The connect actions seemed to get better the more I used them and the further I got. They got smoother.

My only experience with them so far is trying to shoot the explosive barrels in the prison while guards and that ogre attack me. Didn't really work as advertised.

I have a question about this game. I just got it during Amazon's Black Friday sale (and due to some bugs in the system, I might end up getting it for free), with the foil card. Do I have to redeem the code before I start the game to get the bonus, or can I do that after I've made a save?

I'm debating starting the game, but in case I don't like it, I'd rather keep the code intact as trading fodder...

You can do it after you've made a save. All the vouchers do is add items to the shops.

And to whoever said there's more story on higher difficulties - that's false. You need to play higher difficulties for all achievements, that's it.

Bump for a pre-order bonus lithograph and download code update/warning. The DLC code expires tomorrow, 3/31/09. It claims it will fully expire. I'm not sure how true the statement is but thought it might be worth bumping the thread. Amazon had it labeled as a "gift".

It's been almost a year since someone has posted in here... I'd just like to give this thread a bump. I have a growing backlog right now and I figured I'd grab a game out and beat it before March since there are so many games coming out this month. The game I choose was called Infinite Undiscovery, after completing this game I must say I don't understand any of the reviews I've seen. I really didn't expect much out of it but little did I know that I was picking a game that would soon become a favorite. This is one of my favorite 360 games and I just couldn't put it down. I honestly think this is the most underrated game I've ever played, the combat is awesome, and I really did like the characters. In my book this game is right up there with Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia, if not better than both.

The reason for my bump is to plug this outstanding game, if you are looking for an RPG to play that is cheap you should definitely pick this game up.

I really liked this game too. It did have some major flaws but once you get past the gimmicky first few dungeons and the gameplay settles down a little, it was a great little game. I thought the writers did a great job with the relationship between Capell and Aya too.
