Apparently, DQM:J has already gone Gold. (http://www.square-enix.com/na/company/press/2007/0914/)

If you preorder the game from them, you'll get a little screen cleaner which happens to have the game's world map. Useful, having a little map, but a little boring none-the-less.
But I'm still happy this game came from Japan. I never thought I'd see another Dragon Warrior Monsters.

Thanks for the info! Might be a good enough reason to preorder... but I won't have the time to play this until after this semester anyway, so I don't know if there's a point :(
Crap, is that $39.99 price the EB/GS inflated price or the actual MSRP? I passed on both Heroes of Mana and Luminous Arc at Gamecrazy because they were $39.99 and $34.99 MSRP (with neither getting stellar reviews to make up for it). I will probably preorder this at GC because they also have the bonus and because this game is supposed to be pretty good. Hopefully it is no more than $34.99 there, though.

Interesting, but I just realized I have no idea what exactly this game is. I actually have no idea what any of the DQM games are, but they can't warrant $40.

I'm pretty sure the $39.99 price tag of DQM:J is set by square, just like all their other ds titles. and for the pre-order bonus, that's pretty meh. I've already got the game at my job, so i'll pass on the gamestop's weak attempt to draw pre-orders.

No DS game is worth $40, IMO.

Amazon has it for $34.99 (http://www.amazon.com/Square-Enix-Dragon-Quest-Monsters/dp/B000SSNCYU/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-3253427-9651857?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1189743413&sr=8-1) and will also come with the Preorder bonus, as per this post over at slimeknights.com (http://www.slimeknights.com/slimeknights/blog.html?bid=1&view=view_entry&blog_entry_id=2332).
Rocket Slim was also $39.99 when it came out

I'd feel terribly ripped off if I paid $40 for Rocket Slime. Paying $40 for a handheld game is ridiculous. I'm sure it'll drop soon enough.

really? I don't remember seeing it for higher than $34.99, but I remember it priced dropped really fast.

I think at least FF3 was/is $40 because it required a larger DS cart, so it was more expensive to manufacture. Based on the videos I've seen of DQM, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case for this also.

I will buy this the day it comes out because I am a huge HUGe fan of this series; probably more so than Pokemon. Dragon Warrior Monsters 1 and 2 were some of my absolute favorite GBC games. I play both to death, but enjoyed the first far more than the second simply for the fact that I felt that the implementation of breeding was better in the first (the monsters to a degree), the monsters in general, and the storyline/locations was slightly better than number 2s. I was actually hoping for number 2 to be a straight sequel to number 1, but they took number 2 to a totally new land. Still, 2 was great as well.
I've been hoping for a new DWM/DQM for so long.
This game was like the non-kiddie version of Pokemon (not that pokemon is kiddie, but perhaps the non-cutesie monster fighter) cross bred with DW/Q and Final Fantasy.
I'd say based on the $34.99 Amazon price that the $39.99 at GS is typical GS $5 DS game inflation (though GS kept the $34.99 MSRP of Luminous Arc). Hopefully the MSRP is $34.99. If Gamecrazy has it for that in their system then I'll definitely preorder it there instead. The preorder isn't so much to get the bonus as to make sure I get the actual game. They tend to only get a few copies of some of these games and I've missed plenty that I wanted later because I didn't preorder - or had to settle for their gutted "trial" copy. If I'm going to buy it anyway, I might as well...

I didn't realize handheld games where, by definition, less fun than their console counterparts.

I think the DQ Monsters games are like Pokemon where you recruit monsters to fight.
I loved the GBC games and I would pick this up in a heartbeat if it was $30. I really don't want to support Square-Enix's trend of charging $40 for all their games.

I didn't know I ever said that. Oh, wait, that's because I didn't.
I just don't think I can justify playing $40 for any handheld game in the same way that most people wouldn't want to pay $60 for a Wii game or $70 for a 360 or PS3 game. Don't put words in my mouth.

Eh, not the best preorder bonus, but I'll probably still get it just to have it (i'm a whore for collecting these things). I'm definitely getting it at amazon though if GS doesn't lower that price.

It is $34.99. Somehow I mixed it up with FF3DS

DS games are pretty easy to find used after release. Shouldn't be hard to find this game used for cheap.
Preorder bonus SUCKS.

Am I the only one considering buying the strategy guide? I know the internet is awesome and so forth, but I so remember reading the strategy guides for DWM again and again, looking at all the monster breeding records and strategizing to get certain monsters.
Remember the guide for the first game? The (what were they called?) elite monsters were just silhoutes, so if you wanted to see what they looked like, you'd just have to breed for them. Too cool.
